11. Busted
"No way!" I cry and turn my body to face Pietro as we walk through Central Park. "Lady Sif would totally kick Thor's butt if he didn't have his hammer!" After lunch at the quaint little cafe, Pietro and I crossed the street and entered Central Park. We're somewhere in the heart of the little splotch of green surrounded by the city.
"How do you even know about her?" Pietro laughs while looking at me as I return to walking at his side.
"How do you even know about her?" I respond back, lifting a brow as we stare each other down. "Because I do my reading and research." I state, which causes Pietro to roll his eyes at me.
"I read also..." With a smirk, I pause and make him stop walking as well.
"Name the last book you read. Right here." I ask with a snarky smirk.
"That's not important!" He declares defensively and tugs me along so we continue to walk down the sidewalk.
"Ha! I knew it!" I start laughing. This causes a few people to shoot us confused looks while others take out their phones to snap photos of two Avengers just casually walking through Central Park.
"Shut up." He grumbles before a few people start shouting to our left, pointing towards the sky. I roll my eyes. Whatever it is, it's probably going to be our problem. Because I mean, nobody just points and looks at the sky like in the movies. Having just one normal day out is just too much to ask for, I guess. We both move to the commotion anyway. Considering our job is to keep the planet safe, checking out the commotion to make sure nobody's in immediate danger is probably a good idea. What I find surprises me. Looks like nobody is in danger after all, but as for Pietro and I, we're probably in trouble.
"Pietro, Iris." The robotic voice that sounds rather human greets us as he floats through the air and above the mass of people gathering until he's in front of us.
"Vision." I nod my head before lifting a brow at him. He always seems so calm. It's unnerving. I can never figure out what he's thinking or feeling. You know, if he has feelings. I mean, I'm sure he does. They're probably just a bit more different from human's emotions, right? Yeah, I don't know. It's something to ask Tony, I guess.
"We were informed that one of the Quinjets had taken off unscheduled and landed at Stark tower, with the two of you aboard." The in-the-flesh A.I. calmly continues as he lands in front of the two of us.
"Oh?" My eyes shift over to Pietro questioningly. I'm not sure what else he had planned for today, or if he'd rather return to the facility as I'm sure that's why Vision's here. "I'm...assuming we're wanted back at camp?"
"That would be most appreciated." Vision says, his own attention settling on Pietro to see what he has to say about all of this.
"And if we don't return...?" Pietro asks with a lifted brow.
"I'm afraid I was sent to retrieve the two of you." Vision gives the two of us a hard look, which causes me to look everywhere but his face. Pietro can deal with this. But, soon after I'm forced to look back at him. I can practically feel the mischief radiating off him.
Oh no...
"Pietro..." Before I can give him a warning, he grabs my hand and tugs me away from Vision as he takes off in a normal sprint, tugging me along. "Pietro!" I shout, laughing. "We can't outrun him like this!" We aren't moving at the speed of sound, or even light, no. We're just running like two normal people. Except there's an exasperated A.I. floating behind us like a bemused parent. And we aren't normal people. Yeah...there's nothing normal about this, or our lives, for that matter. We continue to sprint down the sidewalk through the park. We weave and dodge people as we run, causing some people to shout at us, and others to just stop and stare. I'm not sure if it's because they're starstruck or just because of the absurdity of two Avengers crashing around through Central Park with a floating A.I. following at a brisk pace looking completely bemused. Either way, we seem to be causing quite a stir here.
And for once, I could care less.
Pietro tugs my hand before I slam into a couple who were both walking and texting. They don't even look up as we narrowly avoid crashing into them. Then before we can run into another couple, we both release each other's hands and run around them before joining back up once we pass them. Again, I'm tugged to the side to avoid a determined looking lady carrying a coffee, but trip as my toe snags a piece of concrete that's partially lifted and my hand slides from Pietro's. As I try to regain my balance and stay upright, I stumble into a man who with surprising speed reaches out and is able to hold me up before I faceplant. After regaining my balance, the man's hands remain on my biceps as if I'm about to fall again. "Crap, I'm so sorry-" And then I notice the man I've crashed into so ungracefully is wearing glasses with red lenses, and there's a white cane on the ground beside our feet.
Of course, I run into a blind man.
"Oh, crap." I mumble with a shocked expression as I regard the man who has brown shaggy-ish hair, a nice suit, and is chuckling like this is the funniest thing ever to have happened to him. My sarcastic side wants to ask what's so funny, but the concerned part of me wants to make sure he's alright. I notice he's got a split lip and reach a tentative hand forward, but pause. "Oh, crap, did I-" I begin, before the laughing man cuts me off.
Looks like the concerned part of me won out.
"No, no. That wasn't you." He calmly states with a broad smile on his face. Meanwhile, I can hear Pietro walking over to us. There's a look of concern on his face and I'm not sure if it's meant for me or the blind man. Either way, I slowly lower my hand back to my side.
"I'm so sorry, I should have been looking where I was going-" I begin again as the man slowly begins to release me to search for what I assume is his cane. Without hesitation, Pietro swoops down and picks up the cane before gently holding it out to the man's uncertain hand. When the cane meets his hand, the blind man instantly grabs it and seems more sure of himself again. He holds the cane with both of his hands as he positions it in front of himself. A smile remains in place on his lips.
"No, really, it's fine." He tries to reassure me and I wince still.
Just my luck, honestly.
"Are you sure?" I hesitantly ask for a final time as I see another man that's shorter and a bit more stocky with blonde-ish hair speed walking over with coffee in both of his hands. Before the brown-haired man can respond, the other man calls out.
"Matt!" He calls as he walks over to the three of us with a shocked look, or maybe it's more starstruck, I'm not sure.
Well, I guess this guy's name is Matt. Now I don't have to keep referring to him as the blind man.
"What are you doing?" The second man whispers frantically as he reaches Matt's side, before offering both Pietro and I a hesitant smile. The brown-haired man, Matt, is about to speak, but I beat him to it.
"Oh no, he wasn't doing anything." I quickly interject. Both of these guys have a lawyer-ish vibe about them and the last thing I want to do is get on their bad side. "I wasn't paying attention and bumped into him." I laugh with uncertainty. "Your friend here caught me." I finish. The second man, whose name I still don't know, looks over at Matt with some sort of look, and I offer a quick smile. "Eh, sorry for interrupting your day..." I look over at Pietro, who's silently been watching on, probably judging, before looking over my shoulder to see Vision has almost made it to us. I'm sure he would have been on us in a second once we stopped, but I guess he decided to watch this whole thing play out. Before I can begin to back away, the shorter man looks back to the two of us.
"It's no problem. If you ever need a lawyer..." He gives us both a smile and digs around in one of his suit pockets before offering a card, which I take without hesitation. "Nelson and Murdock." He says, giving us a professional looking smile. I look down at the card and smile.
Ha, I was totally right about the lawyer vibe.
Considering all the trouble we get into, this card may turn out to be helpful. "Thanks." I offer the duo a final smile then turn my head to where Vision is, now standing behind us, after he clears his throat. I can only imagine what the two lawyers are thinking right now. I mean, I don't think it's often you crash into three of the New Avengers in the middle of Central Park. Again, I wince and look back to the two men before giving a quick nod. "Again, sorry for bumping into you." It causes the brown-haired man to just smile and nod before Pietro and I turn and begin to follow Vision back to the tower. As we walk away, I can hear Nelson whispering about how 'I leave for five minutes and you bump into two Avengers' and 'how do you always flirt with the hot girls?' Even though it's not my conversation, it almost causes me to laugh out loud.
Talk about an eventful day out.
My eyebrows scrunch together suddenly, and I turn my head to look at Pietro.
"Hey." I whisper, trying not to get Vision's attention, who is floating ahead of us in an attempt to lead us back to the tower without us running off again.
"Yeah?" Pietro seems to catch my drift about keeping this a quiet conversation but doesn't turn his head to look at me as he continues to confidently stride forward.
"If you knew we couldn't outrun him...then why did we try?" I question and turn my gaze ahead of myself.
"What's a first date without a little excitement?" The Sokovian smirks as I think back to this morning.
"You son of a gun..." The two of us share a laugh, forgetting about keeping quiet.
