No Surrender
I heard her talking the other day
And listened to hear what she had to say
Whoever it was, was being consoled
It will be alright, was what they were told
The motherly phrases I'd heard often before
When our kids were little with problems galore
The conversation continued, the words were the same
I looked, and she was talking to a small picture frame
All our family together on some past Mother's Day
And for each one in the picture she had something to say
She didn't know, when I asked her, who they all were
She didn't even recognize the picture of her
But something connected, something inside
Something the Alzheimer's was unable to hide
I named all the people and her response was surprise
Then she patted the image with tears in her eyes
My gut gave a wrench and I held onto her tight
Moments like this make it all worth the fight
