23: You Shouldn't Be Here
On the other side of town, Finn and the rest of his family make it to Prancer's Palace. The store was filled with toys, Christmas decorations, and unfortunately -for the Fitzgeralds- a lot of people, especially children. As they all split up and walked through different aisles of the store, Finn can hear his father complaining under his breath about how crowded it is, while Lucy, who is looking through loads of Christmas figurines, is trying her hardest to calm him down.
As Finn walks leisurely down the aisle of tree decorations, he pulls the golden ring that Yara had given to him out of the pocket of his coat. He examines it thoroughly, not saying the phrase engraved on it, in fear of setting it off again. Still looking at the ring, Finn jumps as he feels someone pat his shoulder. He jerks his head around and immediately recognizes Drake. "Dude, you scared the crap out of me." Finn sighed in relief. "How about instead of sneaking up on me, you just say hi?" He chuckled. "Because that would be boring. Plus, you should've seen your face." Drake smirked as he stopped in front of Finn.
"So, what were you looking at?" Drake asked as he crossed his arms. "Nothing much." Finn shrugged. "Yeah, I don't believe that one bit. Hand it over." He said as he held out his hand. Finn rolled his eyes and sighed as he dropped the ring into Drake's hand. "You know sometimes, I really don't like you." Finn stated in annoyance. "If you really didn't like me, then we wouldn't have become friends again." Drake replied. "Oh, shut up." Finn smiles as he playfully shoved him.
"Anyways, what is this thing?" Drake asked as he held up the ring to get a better look. He spins it around and reads the phrase on it before Finn can stop him. "Yara elegit." Drake said as the ring begins to glow a bright red as it burns Drake's fingertips. He immediately yelps and throws the ring of the floor. "SON OF A-!" Drake shouts through his teeth, as Finn hastily shushed him.
"Dude, what the heck was that?!" Drake mutters sharply as he tries to nurse his burning fingers. "I was going to tell you to not read it, but you didn't let me finish, you nitwit!" Finn said. "Listen, I know we're best friends and all, but that doesn't give you the right to prank me like this!" Drake squealed. "It's not a prank. Look, the same thing happened to me this morning." Finn explained as he showed Drake his bandaged fingers.
"Where did you get that thing anyway?" Drake asked as he stuffed his hands in his pockets. Finn leaned down to pick up the ring. "That's where stuff gets a little complicated." Finn sighed as he stood up. "Pretty sure I can handle it." Drake said as he leaned on one of the aisle shelves. "You remember the woman we keep seeing in our dreams?" Finn asked. "Yeah, what about it?" Drake shrugged. "Well, she gave it to me." He stated.
Drake began to fumble over his words in utter shock. ".....I'm sorry, WHAT?!" Drake sputtered with wide eyes. "Just listen to me. Her name is Yara and apparently, she's a goddess." He said as he tried to calm Drake down. "A goddess?!" Drake repeated. "Hey. Lower your voice." Finn mutters as he slapped Drake's arm. "Oh, I'm sorry, I'm just a little surprised that you spoke to A FREAKING GODDESS!" Drake said sharply. "How did you even manage to do that?!"
As Finn was about to explain himself, Leslie and his soon-to-be wife, Beverly walk up to them. "I'll tell you later." Finn whispered as he spotted the couple and quickly put the ring away. "Well, if it isn't the beautiful Beverly Mason." Drake smirked as he strides over to Finn and stood next to him.
Beverly was an African American woman in her mid 20's. Her and Leslie met at Andel Falls University and ended up falling in love and finally got engaged a few months back. Lucy and Fred enjoy having Beverly around and they think she's extremely great for Leslie. Finn has always seen her as family and she was always there to give him advice on his relationship with Marie, when they were still together.
"Hey Drake." Beverly said as she giggled. "Bev, it's so good to see you!" Finn exclaimed as they hugged each other happily. "How have you been?" He asked." Well, ever since you left for your sophomore year, we've been planning the wedding non-stop. " She answered. "We? Leslie actually helps you with that stuff?" Finn chuckled with Drake following after.
"Ha. Ha. Very funny, Finn." Leslie spoke in a monotone voice as he rolled his eyes. "Trust me, Les has been a huge help with all of it." Beverly and Leslie look at each other lovingly as they hold hands. " I just want everything to be perfect for my perfect fiance." Leslie says as he kissed the back of her hand. "Oh, Leslie. You've got it bad." Drake chuckled as he shook his head.
"Don't pay attention to him, guys. He's probably just jealous that Lonnie snagged Pia before he did." Finn teased Drake as he nudged him. "Oh shut your face. We all know that Pia was definitely more into me than Lonnie." Drake scoffed. "You better watch out before Lonnie hears you talking about his girl." Beverly giggled.
Lonnie and Pia met about a year ago after one of his college football games. They started out as good friends, but before Lonnie knew it, he was head over heels in love with Pia Gonzalez, a twenty-three year old girl, born and raised in Seville, Spain. Pia is like an extremely powerful magnet, attracting people left and right. She's intelligent, beautiful and has a heart of gold. But, Lonnie loved how she said anything that came to her mind. She was completely honest with everything, and Lonnie found that incredibly attractive.
When he introduced her to rest of the family, Lucy and Fred immediately liked her, and Leslie always thought of her as a little sister. Finn and Drake met Pia when they first entered Andel Falls as freshmen. Drake had a huge crush on her before Lonnie did, and Pia almost became his girlfriend - that was, until, Lonnie finally admitted his feelings for her.
As Lonnie, Beverly, Finn and Drake continued their conversation, Lucy and Fred come over to them. "Hey, Mom. You guys almost done?" Lonnie asked. "Pretty much." She said. "After we finish up here, we're going back to the house. Drake, would you like to help us decorate the house?" Lucy asked politely. "Oh man, I'd love to! I'll be over for dinner anyway, so I might as well." Drake replied with a smile. "Nice! Maybe Finn could ride back with you." She exclaimed as she picked up items from the shelves and dropped them into the shopping cart.
...
That night, after Drake had dinner with the Fitzgeralds, he finally arrived at his grandma's house around 10:30. As he got out of his car. He noticed something odd. Parked in front of his Pontiac, was a big green pick-up truck and he noticed that the house's lights were on. He began to get a strange feeling in the pit in the stomach as he neared the house, and quickly wrapped his jacket around him to avoid the extremely cold breeze.
"Maybe Sarah's still up?" He thought as he quickly unlocked the door and opened it. He walked in and immediately heard his grandmother talking to someone. "Grandma, you alright?" Drake asked in concern as he walked into the living room. But, as he turns the corner, his eyes immediately widen in shock as he stopped in his tracks. "What are YOU doing here?!" Drake asked sharply as he looked at Nadia sitting across from Adeline with a cup of tea in his hands.
"Drake, there's no reason to raise your voice, honey. Come sit with us." Adeline gestured over to wear right next to Nadia. Drake looks at Nadia with an unexpected intensity as he begrudgingly walks over and plops down next Nadia. "I just wanted to return your locket that you dropped in the parking lot at Marty's." Nadia explains as she guiltily looks at Drake. "I suggested that she stay and have cup of tea with me." Adeline said with a genuine smile. "Oh Drake, she's such a lovely girl. Why didn't you ever tell me about her and your other friends?" She asked.
"I don't know. Maybe I just wanted to keep that part of my life a secret." Drake stated as he intentionally glared at Nadia. Immediate embarrassment spread across her face and she quickly avoided Drake's eyes. "Well, I think she's a great influence on you. She's so smart and a sweet girl." She complimented. "And incredibly gorgeous." Adeline added as she whispered the statement to Drake with a subtle wink. "Oh my god, grandma. Please stop." Drake begged her as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
"What? It's the truth!" Adeline admitted. Nadia nervously sipped her tea as she listened to Drake and Adeline. "Finn and Nadia are kind of dating. Plus, she's not even my type." Drake said in frustration as he leaned back into his seat and purposely avoided Nadia's gaze. Nadia's eyes darted to Drake as he finished his statement and rolled her eyes.
"Oh I almost forgot!" Adeline announced as she started to get up from her chair. "I made cookies for everyone. I think they're almost done!" She continued. Drake quickly rose from the couch, trying to help his grandmother up. "Oh no, grandma. I'll go get them." He insisted. "No, no, dear. It'll only take a second. Just sit here and talk to Nadia." She said as she made her way to the kitchen. "Okay, grandma. We'll just be on the....balcony." Drake lies as he forcibly smiles at Adeline.
As she left, Drake grabbed Nadia by the arm and pulled her halfway through the hallway before she pulled away from him. "Hey, what the heck is wrong with you?!" Nadia whispered sharply. "What's wrong with me?! I'm not the one who showed up uninvited!" Drake muttered angrily. "Oh please. Adeline practically insisted that I come in!" Nadia replied. "Oh, so now you're on a first name basis with her?!" Drake rolled his eyes. "Why are you acting like such a child?!" Nadia snapped. "Because you shouldn't be here!" Drake gritted his teeth as he got in Nadia's face.
There was a moment of silence as Nadia processed what Drake said. She blinked a few times before she exhaled. "Okay." Nadia said as she tried to hide her anger with a small laugh. "Then, I guess I'll be going." Nadia said she walked off towards the door. Drake felt extremely guilt wash over him as he watched her leave. "Nadia, wait." Drake said as he walked after her. But she ignored him and said goodbye to Adeline and Sarah, walking straight out as Drake still followed.
"Stop following me, Drake." She ordered as she opened the door to her truck. Drake ran to the door and slammed it shut as he put his back to it. "Get out of my way, Drake!" Nadia shouted as she tried to push him out of the way, but he wouldn't budge. "No!" He said. "What do you want?" Nadia asked in annoyance. "I'm sorry for what I said." He apologized. "Drake, I don't have time for this. You wanted me gone, so I'm going." Nadia said as she tried to move him again. "I'm not leaving this spot until you hear me out." Drake stated. Nadia crossed her arms and huffed. "Fine, talk." Nadia ordered as she tapped her foot.
"Listen, I didn't mean any of that. I just don't my grandma getting tangled up in our mess." He admitted. "So, Finn can be here, but I can't?" Nadia scowled at Drake. "Nadia, you and I both know that's not what I meant." Drake sighed. "Then what is it?!" She asked in frustration. "You don't trust us? You don't trust me? Or maybe you just don't want any of us around, until we're all in a life or death situation! Be completely honest with me Drake. Is that the only reason that we're friends?!" Nadia questioned.
"What are you talking about?! Of course not!" Drake said. "Then, why don't you want us around your family? Why don't you want us to know anything about you? And I don't mean Drake, the bad boy troublemaker, who has girls fawning over him left and right! I'm talking about who you REALLY are." Nadia stated.
Silence filled the air as they both began to calm down. With a sigh, Drake started to speak. "You're right. I should've been honest about who I am. But, sometimes that can be a little terrifying. What if you don't like who I really am?" Drake asked. Drake, whoever the real you is, I'm pretty sure I'll still like you." Nadia smiled as she playfully punched Drake's arm as they laughed.
Drake took a deep breath as he began to speak. "Look, I'm really glad that you got to meet her. But, I can't have her connected to anything that we've got going on. Nadia, we still might be on the radar, after we happened back in August. I want her to be as far away from that as possible. But that doesn't mean that I don't want you, or Sophia, or even Finn around. I don't what I'd do without you guys, honestly." He admitted. "Wow, sappy much?" Nadia smirked. "Look, I'm trying to be honest about how I feel! I'm only doing this, because you basically begged me to!" Drake responded in defense.
"I'm only messing with you." Nadia giggled. "But, aside from all of that, I accept your apology....I guess." Nadia stated. "Thanks." Drake said happily. "So, I actually wanted to talk you about something." Drake said. "Is it about the Crystal?" Nadia asked in concern. "Well, sort of. Have you gotten your powers yet?" He muttered. "No. Have you?" Nadia asked. "Nothing's happened to me." He answered as his brows knit together. "Why did you ask?"
"Well, while Finn and I we're at Prancer's Palace, he had this gold, creepy looking ring." Drake shuddered at the thought of it as he remembered it nearly burning off his fingers. "He told me that he got it from that woman we keep seeing. Said her name was Yara. He also mentioned that she's a goddess." Drake explained. "She's a WHAT?!" Nadia replied in shock. "I thought the same thing!" Drake commented. "What else did he say?" Nadia asked as she tried collect herself. "Nothing else. He just told me that we'll chat later."
Nadia looked down at her watch and read 11:45 pm. "Okay, Drake. It's getting pretty late. I should start heading back." She stated. "Alright, you wanna talk about this tomorrow? I could call Finn and tell him to meet us at that diner in Maple Grove. "Oh you mean "Blossom's"? I absolutely love that place!" Nadia said enthusiastically. "I knew we we're friends for a reason." Drake said dramatically, making Nadia laugh. "So, about we meet around 2:30?" "That's perfect. I'll bring Sophie with me, so dress to impress." Nadia joked as she gets in her truck and starts the engine. "You say that like I never do." Drake chuckled as put his hands in his pockets."See you tomorrow then." Nadia said as she backed out of the parking lot and drove off.
Drake waved to her as she drove down the street and disappeared into the night.
"What a day."
