22: It All Started With A Lost Locket

All the way on the other side of town, in the beautiful neighborhood of New Valley, Nadia, Sophia and her parents were about to leave the house to pick out their Christmas tree.

Nadia and Sophia we're putting on their coats when Dean knocks on the door. "Girls, you almost ready to go?" Dean asked through the door. Nadia opened the door as she finishes putting on her hat. "Yeah, we're ready." Nadia said with a smile as she walked out of her bedroom with Sophia following after.

"I have to pick up a few things at Marty's, so I might miss out on helping with the tree." Dean announced as he grabbed his car keys from the counter.

Marty's is a supermarket about 15 minutes away from Nadia's house. She used to work there after school and she made alot of friends for the the three years that she worked there. Dean was about walk out of the front door, when Nadia stopped him. "Dad, wait! I'll go to Marty's." She offered with a smile. "Aw no, kiddo, you don't have to do that." He said as he shook his head.

"Dad, Sophie and Mom are going need your help getting the tree to the car. Matter of fact, why don't you guys take my truck? I'll take the sedan." Nadia said she gave her keys to Dean. "You are a star. The list is on the counter by the coffee maker" Dean said as he kissed her forehead and headed for the door. "Alright, come on Sophie. Alba's already outside." He said as Sophia followed him.

"Bye, Nadia! We'll see you when you get back." Sophia enthusiastically waved as she shut the door behind her. Nadia grabbed the list off of the counter, got her Dad's sedan and headed to supermarket.

The ride to the supermarket was incredibly quiet. Nadia and her parents have been going to this supermarket ever since they moved here, plus working part time there while she was in high school made her connection to the employees there even more solid.

As Nadia pulled into supermarket's parking lot and parked in the front spot. As she entered the store, some of the employees greeted her happily. She grabbed a shopping cart and read the list silently.
Suddenly, she heard a voice call out her name. "Nadia!" They said as they walked up to her in a Marty's store uniform. "Andy!" Nadia said as she went around the shopping cart to hug him. Nadia knew Andy from high school. They would always walk to work together, before Nadia finally got her driver's license during her senior year.

After that, she would always offer him a ride and he would always accept. Andy was still a sophomore back then, and when Nadia left for college he was sad to see her go, but Dean and Alba always updated him on how she was doing, and he was ecstatic to find out that she'd be coming home for the holidays.

"How've you been man?" Nadia asked with a smile. "I've been good! Just trying to get through junior year." He says with a giggle. "But I heard that you're having the time of your life over at Andel Falls. Mr. B says you're making all kinds of cool friends!" He continues.

Considering what happened in just the first month of her entering college, Nadia wouldn't say that she's had the best time. Sure her friends are great, but everything from getting her hands on a forbidden magical artifact to getting kidnapped by a cult of hooded freaks and the whole situation with Finn, was becoming little
...excessive for her.

"Yeah, college is....great!" She said as she faked a smile. "Well, I'm glad to hear that. I gotta get back to work before the store manager kills me, but it was really good seeing you. Maybe we can hangout sometime, if you're not busy." He suggests with smile as they hug one last time and he goes down the aisle to restock shelves.

Nadia leaves and starts reading down the list once more as she goes down the aisles. She quickly grabs the items and checks them off one back one.

About 30 minutes later, she's almost done with the shopping list. She's completely focused on read it, until she looks up and almost collides with another shopper as they immediately hold on to the end of the cart stopping it in front of them. "Hey! Watch out, you nearly-wait, Nadia?!" They said.

Nadia blinks rapidly, trying process who's in front of her. "Drake?!" She said in shock. "What are doing here?!" She continued. "Look I'm just trying to shop like everyone else. Well, what are you staring at?! Aren't you gonna give me a hug?" He said as he moved around the cart to hug Nadia.

"Sorry about almost running you over, by the way. I was just making sure I got everything on my shopping list." Nadia said as she held it up gesturing to it. "Trust me, you're good." Drake states with a chuckle as they began to walk down the aisle.

"So, you live around here?" Drake inquired. "Yeah, I live in New Valley." She answered. Drake looks at her with wide smile. "No way! I live in the neighborhood right next New Valley!" He said happily. "Wait you live in Millington?!" Nadia asked as her eyes widened. "Yeah!" Drake answered as he chuckled and stuffed his hands in the pockets of his jacket.

"So, how are your parents feeling about you being back?" Nadia asked with a smirk. "Well, my mom is glad that I'm home, but she's still living in Toronto because of her work. " He explained. "Oh, what does she do?" Nadia asked as she grabbed a bag of sugar from the shelf. "She runs this big business company." He stated with a dismissive wave of his hand. "What's the name of it?" Nadia asked in curiosity. "Becker-Martin Enterprises." He answered.

Nadia stops the shopping cart abruptly and turns to look at Drake in utter shock. "What?" He asked sharply. "Did you just say Becker-Martin Enterprises? And that your mom is Rosalie Becker-Martin?!" She asked excited. "Um, yeah?" Drake replied in confusion. "Okay, your mother is literally one of the top 3 women that I admire THE MOST!" She exclaimed. "Her company worth over 30 billion dollars and her whole house is bigger than our university! Plus, she was on THE Time Magazine! Your mother was everything that I aspired to be when I was little!" Nadia exclaimed.

"Are you done?" Drake asked in annoyance. "Right, sorry." Nadia said shyly. "Well, does that mean you live with your dad?" Nadia asked. "My dad passed away before I started high school." He sighed as he awkwardly scratched the back of his head. "Oh, I'm sorry for bringing it up." Nadia sadly mumbled. "No, it's totally fine. You had no way of knowing." Drake said reassuringly.

"Maybe if you weren't so closed off, I could know more about you." Nadia stated with a smirk as they entered the checkout line. "I think it's actually better you or Sophie don't know much about me. You probably wouldn't like some things that I would tell you anyway." He chuckled. "Well, maybe you got me all wrong. Unless you decide to tell me, we'll never know how I'd react to it." Nadia comments as she smirks at Drake, causing a smile to slowly spread across his face. "Yeah, okay." Drake replies with a chuckle.

They both finish paying for their groceries and head outside. Nadia spots Drake's car parked right next to her's. "Well, if it isn't the legendary Pontiac!" She said happily. "Of course! You know I had to bring her back home! This is her first time seeing the sights and she still runs like a charm." Drake states as he sits his hand on the hood. "Even after you crashed it back in October?" Nadia questioned as she giggled. "Hey, we all agreed to never bring that up again, remember?" Drake said as he pointed a finger at her. "Must've slipped my mind." Nadia replies with a shrug. "Never thought I'd say this to you, but you're a liar." Drake says  he puts his groceries in the Pontiac.

Nadia laughs as she closes the truck of the Sedan and Drake gets in the driver's seat of his car. "Well, it was nice seeing you, Nadia. Just so you know, I'm telling Finn that I ran into you." He chuckled. "Are you seeing him today?" Nadia asked. "Yeah, I'm meeting him and his family at Prancer's Palace in about two hours." He says. "Oh cool!" Nadia commented.

"Yeah, I'll tell him that you said hi. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you that his family is throwing a Christmas party on the 27th. You can bring Dean, Alba and Sophie along if you want. Finn would really like it if you showed up." He stated. "I'll think about it." Nadia said with a nod. "I'll see you around then." Drake says as he starts the car. He gives Nadia a wave and drives off.

As Nadia watches him leave, she heads to the driver's seat of her dad's car. Her foot hit the ground as she accidentally stepped on something in front of the tire. Looking down, she steps back and realizes that it's a gold circle shaped locket necklace. She opens it up and sees a picture of Drake and an elderly woman and a small folded piece of paper. Nadia unfolded the paper and read what was inside.

"If lost, return to this address":
4180 Millington Drive,
Henderson, Nevada, 89002

Turning the paper over she noticed a phone number and by it was a name. "Adeline Becker." She said. "This most definitely is Drake's address." Nadia mumbled. She stood up, putting the necklace in her coat pocket. She quickly got in the sedan, started the engine and drove off towards her house.

...

About 20 minutes later, Drake parks his Pontiac in the driveway of his house. As he carries the multiple bags of groceries in his arms, he knocks on the front door, not even bothering to take out his keys because of how full his hands are at the moment.

"Who is it?" The voice of a female asked. "It's Drake". He said as he struggles with the bags. "Could you open the door, please? My arms are killing me." Drake asks as he laughed nervously, as he was in fear of dropping the bags, if he waited a second longer.

A young English woman opens the door and  immediately reaches for some of the grocery bags that Drake was struggling with. "I honestly don't know what I would do without you, Sarah." Drake sighs in relief.

"Well, considering that this has been my job for the last 10 years, I'd say that it's pretty hard to get rid of me." Sarah says as she smiles. I'm going to take all these bags to the kitchen and getting started on dinner. Adeline is sitting in living room." She states as she walks to the kitchen. "Oh, she's feeling better today?" Drake asked happily as he followed. "Yep! She's been asking about you ever since she got up this morning!" Sarah explains.

"So, what are we cooking tonight?" Drake says as he drums his fingers on the kitchen counter. "Adeline's favorite." Sarah answers with a smirk. "Spaghetti and meatballs? Now I regret accepting Finn's dinner invitation tonight." Drake sighed dramatically. "You know I'm going to put some up for you." Sarah replied. "And I'm not going to stop you". Drake and Sarah both laugh.

"Sarah, I know I've said this a million times but thanks for doing all of this while I was gone". Drake said meaningfully. "Awe, Drake. It's really no problem. Your mom and I saw that you were struggling with school and taking care of Adeline, so I took on the role as her caregiver". She stated. "I've had the best time with taking care of your Grandma and if we're being honest, the pay isn't that bad either." She continued. Drake let out a laugh at her final statement.

"Drake? Is that you that I hear in the kitchen?" Adeline calls out from the living room. "That's my cue, I'll see you in a minute, Sarah." Drake said as he left the kitchen to go see Adeline. "There's my beautiful grandson." Adeline says happily as she rocks back and forth in her recliner.

"Hey, Grandma." Drake says as he kisses her cheek and sits on the arm of the couch next to her. "I thought you were going to spend the day with Finn and his family." She said. "Well, I got a few more hours to spare, so I thought spend them with you and Sarah." Drake smiled. "You've always been such a sweetheart." Adeline replies with a bright smile. "Only a select few get to witness that side of me, and you're definitely at the top of the list, Grandma." Drake states.

"Rosalie called me today." Adeline admitted. "Nice, what did she say?" Drake asked as he smiled. "She asked about you and Sarah. She said that she sent some money for us, so it should be coming soon." Adeline stated. Is she still held up in Toronto or is she coming for Christmas?" Drake asked. "She doesn't know." She says. "She always says that, you know?" Drake sighed. "She always tries her best to make it back here, honey. But, being a CEO is hard work." Adeline gives Drake a small smile.

"Well, maybe if she put in as much work into seeing her family than she does for her company, she wouldn't have to send us money every year just to apologize for her absence." Drake mutters. "Drake, stop. There's no reason to get angry." Adeline replied as she calms him down.

Trying to avoid speaking another word about his mom, Drake decides it's time for him to head down to Prancer's Palace a little earlier than he was supposed to.

Drake looks at the time and gets up from the couch. "Looks like it's time for me to get going Grandma. Prancer's Palace is all the way on the other side of town, so I have to make it there before it gets crowded." Drake states as he hugs and kisses Adeline's cheek again. "Do you want me to bring you back one of those tiny Christmas trees to put on the coffee table?" He asked as he zipped his jacket up. "Oh, that would be delightful! Maybe you could bring a wreath to put on the front door, too?" She asked in excitement. "Anything for you." Drake says as he places a hand on her's.

As Drake walks to the front door, he says goodbye to Sarah, gets into his car and heads to Prancer's Palace.
