17: Secrets and Silence

The past four months have been unusually peaceful for the group of five, as they made their return to Andel Falls University. The last day of their weekend trip to Donna's cabin was extremely frustrating, as the group had to find out what to do with the crystal. The hooded cult were on a search for all of them and they had to put it somewhere safe before it got into the wrong hands. It was finally decided that Donna would hide it within the cabin, somewhere only she would know where it was.

After their time at the cabin, it's been one monotonous day after another. Their days have been filled to the brim with library studying sessions, ten to twenty paged essays and sprinting up and down the campus, just to make it to their classes on time. All of their dreams and visions have continued, only becoming stronger. They seem to remember alot more from them, but the hooded cult haven't been seen since the football field got destroyed.

As time continued, Finn and Drake have officially become best friends again and Nadia, Sophia, and Donna have become close friends. Nadia writes her parents every month, telling them about her new friends and how she's doing. But she avoids telling them about what happened in August.

It's now winter break and all of the students are counting down the days until they can finally go home and see their beloved families. It's Thursday afternoon and an exhausted Nadia, wearily opens the door to her dorm room and is met with an unexpected surprise. She sees Sophia sitting on her bed, wiping her eyes as she cries. Papers are scattered all over her comforter and she's clutching a piece of paper in her trembling hands.

Nadia reacts immediately, throwing her bookbag on her bed and rushing over to comfort her friend. "Sophia, what happened?" Nadia queried as she looked at Sophia in extreme concern. "Are you okay?" She continued. Sophia quickly tried to collect herself as she looked up at Nadia. "I'm fine, it's nothing." Sophia replied as she sniffled.

Nadia could see that something was definitely not right. Sophia's known for being happy, funny, and loving to everyone around her. But to see her breakdown like this, it made Nadia's heart sink. She's never seen her like this. But then again, Sophia never talks about anything involving her past or even her life.

"Sophia, whatever it is that you're hiding, you can tell me. " Nadia said as she grabbed Sophia's hand and looked into her red, puffy eyes. "We're friends, you can tell me anything. I won't judge you for it, Sophie." Nadia says softly as she sits closer to Sophia. "I know that you won't, but others will." Sophia says in a raspy voice.

Sophia pauses as Nadia stares at her, still holding her hand, as she tries to calm her down. She had to admit that what Nadia was doing was working but she was still afraid to tell her what was going on. Sophia has never trusted anyone with her secrets, not even Donna, who claims to know just about everything about her.

Nadia's eyes fall into the piece of paper that Sophia's holding and she sees a small picture of a little girl beneath Sophia's thumb. "Who's that?" Nadia asked she observed the picture. Sophia quickly folded the piece of paper and rushed over to her night stand to put it away. "It's nothing." Sophia said with a sharp tone as she turned from her night stand.

"Sophia, tell me what's going on with you." Nadia ordered as she stood up from the bed, folding her arms. "Why, so it can spread throughout the school like wildfire?!" Sophia snapped. "If people find out about who I really am, what I really am, they're going to look at me differently. I'm going to be judged for it!" Sophia continues. "I'm just trying to help you get through this. You can tell me, I'm your friend, Sophia." Nadia said with a raised voice.

"Yeah, there's been a lot of people in my life, that have said those exact words to me. But the minute things go south, they forget me." Sophia said in low tone. "I could never forget about you Sophia. You're one of the first people that accepted me here." Nadia said as she walked over to Sophia. "I'm trying my best to be here for you but you have to tell me what's wrong." Nadia said.

Sophia was becoming hesitant as she slowly opened her drawer and took out a few sheets of folded paper. "If you promise that you won't tell a soul, not even Donna, I'll let you see what's on these pieces of paper." Sophia negotiated. " I promise that I won't tell anyone, not even Donna." Nadia said with a smirk.

Sophia gives her the papers and Nadia unfolds them revealing a letter. She begins to read it aloud.

Sophia,

I'm sorry that we haven't been writing as much as we used to. These past few weeks have been unbearable, especially with Chase coming and going as he pleases. He constantly refuses to realize how much he is neglecting his responsibilities as a father. I know that we promised to look after Marcia while you worked hard in school. It seems like you're doing all the heavy lifting when it comes to supporting your child. Your father and I are extremely proud of you.
I haven't forgotten about the plans that we made for you to visit us and your beautiful daughter. Just a few days ago, she started walking on her own! We really wish you could have been there. But unfortunately, we have bad news regarding your trip. We recently had a terrible storm here and all of the flights have been delayed. I understand that you could probably get here after the delay but almost every street is covered with ice. It would be impossible to get to you in time for Christmas. It would be better for you to stay in Nevada for the remainder of your winter break.
I'm heartbroken that we won't get to see you and that you won't be able to see your beautiful Marcia this time around. Hopefully, we will be able to you for summer break. Know that you are in our thoughts everyday you are away from us, and we pray that you are safe in Nevada.

Your loving mother,
Jeanette

Nadia's eyes widen in utter shock as she looks up from the letter and into Sophia's eyes. "Oh my god, Sophie." Nadia says softly as her brows knit together. "You have a daughter?!" Nadia muttered. "Yeah, she lives in England with my parents, since my ex-boyfriend won't step up." Sophia says shamefully as she crosses her arms. "And you're upset because you can't visit your family this year?" Nadia asked.

The tears began to well up in Sophia's eyes as Nadia questioned her. "I've nowhere else to go if I can't visit them. I'll have to stay here for winter break." Sophia said as she wiped her eyes.

"Oh, Sophie, I'm so sorry." Nadia wrapped Sophia into a tight hug as Sophia began to cry again. Then, an idea suddenly came to Nadia and she grabbed Sophia by the shoulders as her eyes widened in glee. "Sophie, I just had the best idea!" Nadia stated with a smile. "What is it?" Sophia asked with a hoarse voice.

"What if you stayed with my family and I for winter break?" Nadia suggested with excitement. "Nadia that's sweet of you, but I don't think your parents would want you inviting some stranger over." Sophia replied as she wiped her eyes and sat on her bed. "Sophia, I write to them every month. They obviously know who you are, and they absolutely love you". Nadia said as she sat next to Sophia. "You tell your family about me?" Sophia asked with a smile. Nadia nudges Sophia playfully. "Of course, I do. You're one of my closest friends. Plus, you're my roommate, so I kind of have to." They both giggle.

The room becomes silent for a moment as Sophia looks at Nadia with a smile on her face. She grabs Nadia and hugs her. "Thank you, Nadia. I'm really glad that I met you." She said as she lets go of her. "Well, I have to write my parents and tell them that I'm bringing a plus one." Nadia says with a giggle as she gets off the bed and heads to her desk.

It's around lunch time and Finn, Drake, Donna and Charlie are in the library studying for their last final before winter break. It's incredibly quiet as everyone is focused on their textbooks, while they all write notes.

Drake is the only one who isn't enjoying the silence, as he drums his fingers on the wooden table and desperately looks around, searching for anything to do. He turns to Finn, who is reading a novel. "Finn, when are we getting out of here?!" Drake whispers sharply. "I guess whenever Donna and Charlie decide to get lunch." He mutters with a shrug. "Dude, why aren't you studying like the rest of us?" Finn questions him with a cocked eyebrow. "Why would I need to study when I can just copy your notes when we get back to the dorms?" Drake replies with a smirk. "You know, one of these days I'm not going to be here to save your skin, Drake." Finn stares with a chuckle. "I swear this is the last time, it'll happen!" Drake announced.

"You say that every single time." Finn says with a sigh. "Come on, don't you want to help your best bud?" Drake asked with a pleading look in his eye. "Even if I do say no, you'll just annoy me until I give in." Finn says as he leans back into his chair.

"Oh god, don't tell me Drake is pulling his yearly copy card." Charlie comments as he rolls his eyes. "He used to do it just for final exams." Donna adds with a giggle. "Yeah, now he's added midterms to the mix." Finn explains with a chuckle. "What else am I going to use my genius best friend for?" Drake says defensively. "Maybe you could not use him at all." Charlie answers as Donna and Finn try to contain their laughter.

"Who else am I going to use?! Nadia?" As soon as, Drake said that name, Finn began to shift in his chair and everyone started to notice. They all became quiet as Drake realized what he said. "Oh, man, I'm sorry." Drake apologized immediately.

Every time Finn heard her name, all he could remember was that kiss. He felt immensely embarrassed about what he did that night. Marie had just cheated on him with his best friend, and all he ever wanted was for someone to love him for who he was, and he felt like Nadia could be that someone. But seeing the look on her face afterwards, not being able read her clearly, it made him completely mortified. It was like his emotions were running so high that he lost control of everything.

That feeling of embarrassment and nervousness was the only thing that was stopping him from saying something as little as a "Hello". Drake was the first one to know about the kiss. Then, Drake told Sophia, which caused her to tell Donna and Charlie. Then, that information somehow got to Marie and even though Finn broke up with her, she went ballistic, which wasn't really a surprise for Finn.

He always knew how possessive Marie was, but once they had broken up, it had only gotten worse. Because of that, he had made the decision to keep Nadia away, rather than trying to pursue a relationship with her that would consistently involve Marie.

Nate, on the other hand, has been avoiding Finn and Marie ever since the fight back in August. He only really comes out of hiding if it's school related or football related.

"Are you serious, Finn?! This is the fourth month that you haven't said anything to Nadia!" Donna muttered as her and Charlie got up from the table. Finn and Drake did the same. "Hey, Finn's just nervous. Besides, he still hasn't gotten Marie off his back, which we all know is close to impossible." Drake replies as he glances at Finn, who is clearly frustrated.

As Donna and Charlie walk out of the library, Drake stops Finn as he puts his hand on the door. "What, Drake?" Finn says with a sigh. "You need to talk to her and I mean before we go on break." Drake orders in a low tone. "I'll do it tomorrow." Finn said sharply as he tries to push the door open.

But Drake stops him again. "You said the same yesterday and the day before. Matter of fact, you've been saying that everyday for four whole months!" Drake complained. "Just think about how Nadia's feeling. Oh, that's right, you don't know how she's feeling because you refuse to talk to her!" Drake continued.

"Drake, I really don't feel like talking about this right now." Finn muttered as he gritted his teeth. "All I want to do is go get lunch with Donna and Charlie without you bringing up what happened at the cabin." He said as he pushed open the door and walked out.

Fine, have it your way.
