Whispers flooded the campus halls the morning. I knew exactly what it was about. Compliments of wonder and awe spewed all over. I listened in.
"It's so pretty, have you seen it?"
"It's so inspiring."
"Who ever did it has some serious balls!"
"Too bad it's not on the wall, it'd make a good photo."
"Talented art student." Pride blossomed in my chest like a flower. My feet felt lighter and I was walking taller.
During the first class an announcement was roared over the loud speaker. My heart was pounding in my chest. It was a scolding for the artwork done on campus ground. They barked heavy threats of punishment. My stomach churned but I knew the cameras didn't work, other wise I'd be in the office and not in class.
Between every class the whispers intensified. I found it amusing. Due to my teachers new found crabby demeanor my work load nearly doubled. I texted Jordan to let her know I would be in the library over lunch. Jordan would never come to the library so I knew I'd be left alone.
I was almost late for Mrs. Swans class since it was on the complete opposite side of campus from the library. I was coughing on air by the time I made it to class. She gave me a tender smile. I slid into my desk.
The class today was quiet interesting. She talked about people who inspire us. We took down a lot of notes about good people who make good influences and who've changed times. She gave us an assignment to write about people we find inspiring. I knew I was going to write about Amelia Earhart, she was the person who changed me the most.
After class the students cleared out fairly quickly. I grabbed my bag and headed up the stairs. Theo was ahead of me, I tried to act natural and step quietly without him noticing me. Most of this week Theo and I had little interaction. We exchanged glances and he winked from time to time. Not much more. Theo spun on his heels at the door frame. We almost collided, our noses only inches apart.
"Nice artwork by the way." He said in a low, husky voice. My mouth started to water, I swallowed.
"I have no idea what you're talking about." My voice was even as I pushed past him. A small huff of a laugh came from behind me. I could only assume it was him. I could no longer hold back the happiness that was blooming in my stomach, I smiled.
My artwork had blown up on social media. People were taking pictures of it, taking pictures with it and uploading them online. The school didn't even seem thatmad which was shocking to me, but I ignored that thought. Jordan came running up to me. Her hands clasped around my arms tightly.
"Dev, you are blowing up!" I smiled widely. "You're going viral!" She whispered loudly. Fireworks were exploding inside my chest. I don't think I'd ever been so happy. "Has Theo seen it?" In the excitement of the moment I forgot to be unbias to him.
"He said it was nice!" I squealed.
"Oh my god." This was the closest I'd even been to popular. I was always on the outskirts and less known to those around me. Being mystery famous was incredible, I could see why Theo liked it so much.
After classes I was walking back to my car. Theo was walking a couple feet ahead of me, surprisingly he was alone. I jogged to catch up with him.
"How did you know it was me?" Theo turned to me with a smile. He didn't say anything and peeled off towards his car in the far right of the parking lot. I sighed. Throwing my stuff into my car my head was somewhere far away. My artwork made a difference. A car pulled up along side of mine. I knew exactly who it was before I looked at the driver.
"You wanted to change the world." Our eyes met. "It was a good quote." I leaned into my open car door.
"Why does that make it me?"
"Only you'd be dumb enough to get caught on camera." My cheeks flared with heat.
"The cameras outside our fake, there is no video." He smirked.
"I don't think you're dumb, but I know you'd never admit to it. Not directly. But I'll take that as my answer. Gotta fly, Earhart." He quickly drove off. I slide into my car with a smile.
Work was fairly slow like every Friday was. The few people that did come in were talking About the spray paint job I did last night. I hide my smile every time it was brought up.
The night went like every Friday did. I was sweeping when I herd a knock at the door. I turned around. Theo stood on the other side with his hands in his pocket. I shook my head and mouthed no. His bottom lips pushed out and his eyes grew big. Honestly, he looked adorable. Frustrated, I opened the door just wide enough for my small frame to stand in the way.
"No." Theo pouted again.
"Why not?"
"Because I got in trouble for the last time you were in here." He tilted his head to the side, thinking.
"After."
"No!" I snapped a little. He didn't seem to notice or if he did, he doesn't mind.
"Why not?"
"Why do you want to hang out with me so much?" The corns of his mouth flexed up.
"I thought we went over this already." I rolled my eyes and stared to close the door. He jotted his hand out.
"Come on, tell me you have something better to do tonight and I'll leave you alone, but some thing tells me you don't." We stared at each other. Why did he have to be right? "Fine, you have a hard out. The second you're done, call it."
"You pouted the last time this happened." His jaw moved but he made no sound, for the first time he was flustered.
"Was it a sin to want to you to stay?" He finally asked. That was a enduring thought.
"Fine. You wait outside." Theo shook his head.
"I'll help."
"We have security cameras." He shrugged his shoulders. I pointed to a chair. "Sit and don't touch a thing!" He smiled up at me. I rolled my eyes.
I locked the store and texted Jordan I was hanging out with Theo and to pray for me. She sent a bunch of emojis that I didn't understand. Theo's car was cleaner than it had been last week.
"You cleaned."
"Yeah, she needed it." The seats were cold leather, it felt nice against the warm air. "My grandpa would kill me if he knew it was dirty. This car has always been a cherry." I stroked the arm rest attached the door. It was a smooth plastic top, it was cold too. I noticed a sticker under the air vent, leaning forward to read what it said. It said 'RA + TH 69' I smiled. "That was my grandparents."
"You said your parents met with this car too." He gave a confirmation nod. "Do they have a tag?" I looked around the passenger seat.
"Yeah, it's on the back of this mirror." He pointed to the rear view mirror.
"How did you ever find that?" I pulled myself forward and tried to look at the sticker.
"I grew up in the car, have you forgotten?" I looked at him. Theo looked different. It was the car or his hair, not even his jean jacket instead of leather. His facial expression was softer, more human than male model.
I crept into the apartment at 2 in the morning. Theo and I just ended up driving around and talking. I was enjoying his company but I'd never admit to that, I think the same applies for him too. Jordan was on the couch asleep with the tv on.
"Jordan." I rubbed her shoulder. Her eyes fluttered open. "Get up, go to bed. I'm home now." I whispered to her.
"I want to hear 'bout it." Her eyes were puffy.
"Tomorrow." I assured her.
"Sleep in my room with me?" I nodded.
"Okay."
