Chapter 12

"I mean it. I have feelings for you, Elizabeth. I love you, and I'm done hiding it." Michael said, taking her face in his hands.

Elizabeth leaned forward on her tiptoes, pressing her lips tightly against his. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he let go of her face and wrapped his arms around her small body. They kissed for what seemed like forever, her tears pouring down both of their faces until they finally pulled apart.

Elizabeth grabbed his hand, sniffling and then giggling, placing it on her stomach which was being kicked repeatedly from the inside. Michael laughed out loud, pressing one hand against his forehead. He couldn't believe it, she really reacted to him.

"We love you too, Michael." She said, pulling him into another embrace.

They arrived at the farmer's market an hour later. Elizabeth pulled out her recycled bags for the groceries and they made their way throughout the market.

"How does ravioli for dinner sound?" She asked, choosing tomatoes and basil from a vendor.

"Only amazing. I'm already hungry as hell." Michael said, following her to the next section.

"Oh, come here, do you like peaches?"

"Of course."

She pulled two pretty, plump peaches from a stand, handing the vendor some change. She handed one to Michael and took a bite of hers, nectar running down her chin.

Michael lifted his mask up and bit into his, reaching out to wipe her chin playfully. His face lit up, the peach exploding in his mouth.

"See? They're fucking amazing."

"They're so-"

"Are you Michael Jackson?" Someone interrupted them, stepping in front of Elizabeth, close to Michael.

"Nope. But I get confused for him a lot." Michael said, pulling his mask back on.

"Are you kidding? You're Michael Jackson!"

Michael chuckled, "You caught me, pal. But I'm here on my personal time, I would really appreciate it if you kept your voice down and kept this to yourself."

"I will, I will! Is this your girlfriend? Are you having a baby? Michael!" The excited girl said, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Well, technically no, she's not my girlfriend. And no, I'm not having a baby. She's the one who's pregnant. She's having the baby. Please keep your voice down." Michael said, looking around nervously as his security approached.

"I'm sorry, oh man, can I please get a picture?"

"I can't right now, I'm not really here for that. That's why I'm in disguise."

"Oh, okay. There are a lot of people snapping your picture across the market. I came over to see if it was really you." The fan said, looking disappointed.

"Here, I'll take your picture with him quickly, but then you have to go over and tell those people that he's just a Michael Jackson impersonator. Deal?" Elizabeth cut in, talking to the fan.

"Yes! Okay, yes please!" She said, handing her disposable camera to Elizabeth excitedly.

Michael chuckled and gave the fan a side hug, smiling at Elizabeth for the picture. She took two pictures and handed the camera back, and the fan walked away after giving Michael a big hug as promised.

"You've got a heart of gold, girl." Michael said, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling his mask up to eat his peach.

After unloading groceries, Michael and Elizabeth sat at the table and played a card game while the ravioli cooked.

"Do you think you're going to get a lot of shit from the media for being spotted with me?" Elizabeth asked, sifting through her cards.

"It's already happening, but then again I'm always getting a lot of shit from the media, at all hours of the day. I'll never understand what's so interesting about trying to break honest, successful people down. I do whatever anyone ever wants me to do. I release music, I break my back doing tours, conferences, meeting fans, everything they want. I'll never understand why there's a never-ending fountain of hatred flowing just for me."

"I can't even imagine what that's like. You've been dealing with shit like this nearly all your life. Have you ever considered going off the radar?"

"Well, to be honest, I've always known that I was going to when I got my personal life started, you know? Wife, kids, everything like that. I'm just trying to put myself into my work until then. But I think something's gonna change soon, and I'm excited." Michael said, taking her hand in his.

Elizabeth sighed, rubbing her stomach. "I really don't want to get my hopes up. If she's not your baby, I don't think I'll be able to keep her. It's just a constant reminder of what her father, whichever one he is, did to me."

"How soon can we get a paternity test?" Michael asked nervously.

"There's a test that can be done now but it's too invasive. I could lose the baby." Elizabeth said, her heart hurting, "But when she's born, we'll know if you're the father just by looking at her. None of the other guys were black, so you'll be the only option if she is."

"I stand by you no matter what you choose. It's not my place to tell you what you can or can't handle. I will want to be with you no matter what you decide."

Elizabeth stood up, going over to stir the food, seasoning it.

"It's done. I'm going to change into comfortable clothes while it's cooling." She said, stepping into her room.

-

After dinner, they cuddled up to a film, and Elizabeth fell asleep in Michael's lap. He carried her to the bedroom and laid her down before stepping into the kitchen for some late night coffee.

Suddenly, the doorknob to the back door of the kitchen began to jiggle and twist. Michael's heart began pounding and he stood up, backing away from the door. When it was finally unlocked, someone stepped into the kitchen, just as startled by Michael as he was by them.

"Umm... Michael Jackson is in our house." Elizabeth's father spoke to his wife awkwardly.

"Stop, you've had enough, Robert." Elizabeth's mother said, stumbling in behind him.

"No, he means it." Michael said, timidly stepping forward to greet them.
