Chapter 10
After leaving Neverland a week after the heated talk with Michael, Elizabeth ended up flying out to live with her family. Michael made sure she had more than enough support. He paid for her flight and made a few other financial accommodations for her, despite her begging him not to.
Elizabeth's parents weren't excited to have her back in their home, especially not since she was pregnant. They gave her a lot of trouble about knowing the father, which caused a lot of grief for Elizabeth. She didn't explain what happened to her. She knew that they would not believe her, given her line of work.
After two months, she visited the doctor for the first time. She noticed her ever-flat stomach starting to curve at just over three months pregnant. She anxiously debated terminating the pregnancy for the first month after leaving Neverland, but she researched and found that the baby was the size of a small apple at that point, which terrified her.
She was prescribed some prenatal vitamins and was told that she was about fourteen weeks along. As terrified as she was, she felt less alone knowing there would be a little human along with her on this journey.
At twenty weeks, she felt the baby move for the first time. Up until that moment she was beginning to worry that something was wrong, but she was so incredibly relieved when she felt the small butterfly movement inside of her.
Elizabeth felt immense guilt as she began to enjoy her pregnancy. She wanted to tell Michael so badly, but she didn't want to hurt him with her choice to put the baby up for adoption. She wasn't going to seek adoptive parents until late in her pregnancy, as she needed time to really commit to the idea of losing the baby she was learning to love.
She decided to keep the baby's gender a secret from herself, she knew that she would only become more attached if she knew.
Elizabeth wrote a lot during these months of her pregnancy, having almost completely finished her prospective album. She couldn't decide on a name for the album, but she wasn't worried about that for long.
It was a normal Friday morning when she was watching the news in her bedroom and the media was buzzing with stories of Michael's new album releasing in a few months. She was so excited for him.
She sat up in bed, picking her cell phone up and dialing his number before hesitating. She didn't know if she should call him to congratulate him. She figured it wouldn't hurt to talk to him, it posed no threat to her situation as long as she was careful.
"Hello?" Michael asked.
"Michael?"
"Elizabeth?"
"Yes! It's me. How are you? I just heard about your new album!"
Michael chuckled, "I'm so glad you called. I haven't gone a single day without thinking about you, Elizabeth. I'm doing okay, how are you?"
"I'm okay too, I'm doing better. I haven't stopped thinking about you either, Applehead." She smiled and her eyes widened at a sudden sensation erupting inside her stomach. The baby was kicking fiercely.
"How about you? How's music going for you?"
"It's been great! I've had a lot of time to write. I've written about twelve songs so far. I've played a few shows here and there, but I'm on a break until the b-" she stopped, her heart sinking.
"Until the what?" Michael asked.
"Umm..." She hung up and facepalmed herself.
She just got carried away, all the while she was thinking about how she was doing so good so far. She felt her heart pounding as the phone rang in her hand. She hesitantly answered it.
"Until the what, Elizabeth?" Michael sounded angry, a tone he had never used with her before.
Her hands were shaking as she responded softly, knowing she couldn't directly lie to him, not him, after everything he'd done for her.
"Until the baby comes." She mumbled.
The line was silent for several seconds before she heard Michael hyperventilating on the other end.
"A baby? You're having a baby, Elizabeth? How long have you known this?"
"A few months. It's why I left Neverland."
"Elizabeth, you didn't have to leave! Why would you leave? You need to be taken care of."
"I'm fine, I'm getting everything I need here." She lied.
She was barely speaking to anyone at home, things were always really quiet. Everyone was always gone and busy. She missed Michael's company greatly.
"Why wouldn't you tell me this? I told you I'd support you through anything."
"You wouldn't have supported me through an abortion, Michael. We both know that."
He was silent, he knew it was true.
"See? This is why I didn't tell you at first. I knew you would judge me."
"I'm not judging you. I just want to know why you would consider that. You have to know I would love nothing more than to adopt your child if you didn't want to be a mother."
"It's about more than just the custody of the baby. I didn't know if I was ready for the physical or emotional aspect of pregnancy. Then it was too late before I saw a doctor. I think a part of me knew I could never have an abortion."
Michael sighed, she knew he was rubbing the bridge of his nose as she'd seen him do out of frustration many times before.
"I'm giving her up for adoption." Lizzy said quietly.
"Her?"
"Well, I'm not sure if she's a girl, but I get this really powerful energy coming from her that makes me think she's a girl."
"What if I wanted to adopt her?"
"Well, you might not have to." Elizabeth mumbled, biting her lip.
