Epilogue.
A year and half later.
“Mama, wake up!”, Zane cried, waking Lillian up and she felt something thrown on her. She jerked awake and held a hand up, grabbing the pillow Zane was aiming to throw.
She groaned and ran her hand threw her hair as she yawn, “Zane Gabriel, don't make me whip your butt if you do that again.”
He giggled knowing she would never lay even a hand on him and jumped on the bed, “Daddy come home, right?”
She frowned and didn't want to explain to him again that everything with Ryan wasn't okay right now. She has tried her best she could to tell two and half year old that his mommy and daddy were taking a break. Zane would just ask again the next time and she felt so bad.
“Not today.”, she said, grabbing his shoulders to make him stop. “But your going over to his house tonight, go see him and grandma and grandpa.”
He nodded, “Yes.”
“Come on, lets go get you something to eat. He should be here in an hour.”, she said.
When she made some pancake and Zane was holding the pancake in one hand, she was trying her best to eat her eggs. She just felt sick though but she does feel like she'll throw up around her period. She picked her fork up and stabbed some eggs, but when she brought the fork up to her mouth, the heavy feeling came to her throat and she groaned, putting the fork down and sighed.
“Mama?”, Zane asked.
She brought her hand up to her chin and forced a smile, “Nothing, Zane, go back to eating.”
She yawned loudly and just decided eating right now wasn't an option.
After Zane ate, she got his bag packed and put on TV in the living room for him to watch until Ryan showed up to get him. It was hard to keep Zane in one spot, so she had to surround him with toys. She went back in the kitchen where she could still see Zane to do the dishes.
Ryan and her got in this big fight a month and half ago over some bills. Some mean words were said to each other and she through her engagement back at him, telling him to take it back, and she couldn't believe she thought about marrying him. Of course the bills argument changed into so many other things they could bring up to continue the argument.
Lillian never meant anything she said to him though. She still loved him, but it was just one of those times she and him needed a break so they would end up hating each other more.
The apartment door bell buzzed. She grabbed a rag and went over to the monitor, “Ryan?”
“Yeah, let me in.”, he said and she pressed the button for him to come in through the doors. It took a moment for him to get up here, but there was a knock at the door. She went over to it and opened it. He was in his usual t-shirt and jeans. “Is he ready?”
“Daddy!”, Zane cried, running over around Lillian and Ryan bent down, picking Zane up.
“Hey little man.”, Ryan said. “What this?”, he said asked, taking the toy in Zane hand. “Who got you this?”
“Grandpa John buy me.”, Zane said.
“Oh, that was nice of him.”, Ryan said.
Lillian turned around and walked over to the couch, grabbing Zane's bag, and went over to Ryan, handing it out to him, “He didn't get a bath, so make sure he gets one tonight.”
He nodded, but of course, brought them up, “When are we going to talk?”, he asked
She sighed heavily and ran her hand back against her ponytail, “Ryan, please—“
“Zane deserve to have his mom and dad togeth—“
“I don't want to start this in front of him.”, she hissed then gave Zane a smile before kissing his head. “Have fun, I love you.”
“Wuv you to, mama.”, he said.
. . .
Lillian scanned the items of food for the lady and packed the food in the bags for her, “Forty three dollars and thirty three cents is the amount, ma'am.”, she said and the lady got the money out. Lillian had managed to graduate high school by going to public school but since college wasn't in her plan yet to go, it was a part time job the was taking her day up right now
The lady gave her a fifty and Lillian gave her back her change.
After an hour and having a break, Lillian was stacking some pads on the shelf. Something in the corner of her eyes caught her attention and she couldn't help but look at the box of the pregnancy test. She stared at the test for a moment and bit her bottom lip.
Maybe it was denial, but she has had some thoughts—what if she's pregnant again? She hasn't gotten her period yet and last month, it was unusually light. She has very tired lately and like she was going to throw up. She doesn't want to admit she missed a few pills almost three months ago.
She finally looked away and continued doing her job.
. . .
Lillian tapped the top of the pregnancy test against her thumb, her body shaking nervously. Three minutes have already passed, but she was to scared to look yet. She couldn't be pregnant again, can she? Zane's only three, she promised herself she would wait awhile to have another kid and she's only nineteen! Have two kids and not even be twenty yet? Well, she would be twenty even before the baby here, but still.
Ryan has a good job and he's close to joining the police force. She has an okay paying job, enough to pay the bills.
She breathed in heavily and let it out slowly, turning the stick around and the plus sign was clear as day. Her eyes stung up with tears and she wasn't sure if she was happy or sad, but she knew she was scared as shit.
She was breathing hard from trying hard not to cry. She brought her hand up to her forehead and breathed out hard, trying to grasp what just happened.
But all she could think about was the cuddling and love she remember having with Ryan when she was pregnant with Zane. After the drama and they got together, it felt so perfect to Lillian and she just wanted it back so badly.
She missed Ryan.
Two days later.
Lillian walked over to the door to let Ryan in and Zane ran in, holding the plastic bag up, “Toys, mama!”
She smiled and nodded her head, “I see Zane, why don't you go open them up and get them ready to show me?”
He just nodded and went over to the couch, emptying the bag.
“What's up?”, Ryan asked.
She shrugged her right shoulder, “I don't know what you mean?”
He chuckled and took his jacket off, “Lil, I know you, I know when something bugging you.”
She was quiet for a second as she stared at him. The smile dropped and he looked confused, staring back at her. She cleared her throat, “Follow me.”
Confused, he did follow her to the kitchen. She went over to the counter and picked the pregnancy stick up, taking a moment before turning around and held it up to him. He stared down at the stick and his eyes widen.
“Oh.”, he said.
“Yeah, I know.”, she said, lowering her head.
It was quiet, to quiet for her liking.
“So,”, he said, clearing his throat. “What's going to happen now?”
She opened her mouth to say something, but she isn't sure what she was going to say really. She crossed her arms over her chest, “I thought about how happy we were when we got together.”, she said and hesitated, “Maybe—maybe this baby is what we need for us to fix our relationship.”
His mouth twitched and he he brought his hand up to scratch his nose. She knew him so well that he was trying to hid his smile. “What are you saying?”, he asked.
She leaned back against the counter and smile a little, “I want you to come home, Ryan.”
He grin appeared on his face and he took a step towards her, making her get up from leaning against the counter. He put his hand behind her neck and kissed her. She smiled against the kissing and felt that old spark she hasn't felt in awhile.
“Mama!”, she heard Zane and they broke the kiss to see Zane holding the race cars in his hands. “See!”
She chuckled and bent down towards him, “I see, Zane, their awesome. I have something to tell you though.”
“What?”, he asked
“Mommy and daddy are going to have another baby.”, she said
He tilt his head to the side and looked confused, “Huh? I'm you baby.”
“You are, but there's going to be one more baby.”, she said.
“I don't see him.”, he said, looking around.
“He or she in here”, she said, putting her hand against her belly.
His eyes widen and his mouth dropped, “You eat him!”
Ryan and Lillian chuckled, “I did not! He's growing in there though like a flower and when he's done growing, he'll come out and we will bring him home.”
“And he live with Grandma and Grandpa next day?”, he asked, making Lillian and Ryan chuckle more at their son.
