Chapter Twenty-One

Lillian leaned against the sink, rocking herself back and forth, “Come on, Lil, you’ve been hiding in here for the last seven minutes.”, she said to herself in the mirror as if her reflection was saying it to her. “How hard is it to say no?”

She had excused herself to the bathroom after a long minute of staring back and forth between the beautiful ring and Ryan. Her tongue had swelled up though and she couldn’t grasp what just happened. Had Ryan really propose to her? Did he really ask her to marry him?

She thought she had been dreaming there for a second, knowing Ryan would never propose to her! That was crazy, they only been together for a year, not very long to get engaged! Sure, they had a child together, but this is marriage!

Okay, so maybe marriage isn’t as huge as having a baby, but it’s still very, very important!

She took a deep breath and looked down at the sink, “Oooh, what am I suppose to do?”, she asked herself so very confused. She loved Ryan, but—marriage!? She brought one of her hands up to her mouth and started chewing on them.

What would be so bad about saying yes to Ryan? She loves him, so why not? It’s not like she’s talking about getting married this year! They could wait until she graduates to get married and in that time, they would be together long enough to know each other more and enjoy themselves.

She’s a teen mom already, she doesn’t need to be a teen bride right now.

What would be so bad being known as his fiancée?, she thought to herself and a smile appeared on her face

She got up, checked herself in the mirror, and walked over to the door. She opened and stopped dead in her tracks to see Hanna with two adult and one little brother here. She looked at Ryan who looked confused and like he seen a ghost as he tried to hide himself, which made her very confused.

She walked towards the table and Hanna was coming her wave, so she raised a hand and smile, “Hi, Hanna.”, she said friendly.

She didn’t look so happy to see her though, “Oh hi, Lillian.”, she said in an unusual bored tone, making her more confused.

She watched as Hanna and her family walk passed them and she gave Ryan a questionable look, but he just looked away. He cleared his throat and grabbed Zane’s jacket, “I think it’s time to go home.”, he said as he took his wallet out and put some money on the table

She frowned, wanting to gave an answer to Ryan question and she wanted to know what was up with Hanna, but she to confused to sum all the questions up.

“But—“, she started but Ryan handed her her jacket.

He grabbed Zane from Duncan who looked like he was switched off and before she could ask him anything, Ryan grabbed her hand and dragged her out of the restaurant to the car.

When they got home, Lillian walked into the house and turned to Ryan, “What happened back there?”, she asked and Ryan looked behind her. She turned her head around and saw Ryan’s parents looking at them confused.

“Could you to watch Zane for a second?”, Ryan asked.

“Oh. . .sure.”, Meredith said as she got up and took Zane from Ryan.

Ryan grabbed Lillian hand and took her back outside, “No eavesdropping—dad!”, he said before closing the door.

Ryan walked down the porch and she followed him, “Explain.”, she said. “Did. . .did you really propose to me or was that just to make Duncan jealous or something? Cause Ryan, Duncan doesn’t have feelings—“

Ryan turned to her, “Lil, either don’t be in denial or naïve.”, he said and she looked confused. “Of course Duncan likes you, a lot of us sees it but you.”

She scuffed, ignoring the whole Duncan-likes-you thing, “So you proposed and didn’t really mean to.”.

“No, Lillian—wait.”, he said, grabbing her arm as she began to turn around away from him. “I meant it when I said I was going to do it in the spring, I really was.”.

“Why?”, she asked. “Ryan—we’ve only been together for a year and your proposing to me?”.

“Well I thought we could wait until you graduated or whenever you wanted to, but I thought being engaged could make us much stronger with each other.”, he said and she was surprised.

“So…you actually proposed?”, she asked, raising an eyebrow.

He nodded, looking at her seriously, “Yes.”.

She forgot all about Duncan and Hanna as she smiled up at him, her cheeks warming up, “Your such a loser, Ryan.”, she said, giggling as she lightly pushed on his chest and he grinned.

“You freaked me out back there, Lil. Was me proposing really that horrifying?”, he asked

She chuckled and lowered her head, bring her hands up to her forehead, “No—I mean, I was really surprised.”, she chuckled as she looked back up at him. “I really wasn’t expecting it.”

He grinned and took her hands in his and her hands warmed up, “You never did give me an answer, Lil.”

She blushed and she was trying really hard from smiling like a maniac, “Well I always kind of dreamt being proposed while the guy was down on one knee, you know the cliché move.”, she said, shrugging before taking a glance at the floor.

                “Serious?”, he asked, almost groaning.

“Want me to say yes?”, she asked, cocking her head to the side.

He chuckled and got down on one knee as he reached into his jean jacket pocket and took out the ring, making her giggling and she brushed one of her hands threw her hair before putting it back in his, “Lillian Chelsea Monroe, will you marry me?”, he asked

“Now this more romantic.”, she said. She took a second before nodding, “Yes, Ryan, I will.”

He stood up and put his hands around her cheeks, kissing her hard on the mouth for a moment, “Good, or that would have been awkward if you just said no.”

She chuckled up at him as she put her hands on his waist, “Why do I love you so much?”

“Just hold your hand out.”, he said and she chuckled, bring her hand up and he took his hands off her face so he could slip it on her left forth finger.

She brought her hand close to her heart, “I love it so much, Ryan, it’s beautiful.”.

“I’m glad you like it, took me a few paycheck to save up for it. It’s kind of why I’ve been stressing with the whole saving up for everything for Zane.”, he said.

“Oh.”, she said, feeling bad for pressing to hard on Ryan.

“Hey, don’t look like that!”, he said, putting his hands on her shoulders when she gave that guilty look. “I just wanna see that smile on your face.”, he said and thinking that was so sweet, she smiled again and he kissed her.

She pulled away and held her index finger up, “Okay, we were thinking the same thing—no wedding until after I graduate.”, she said.

He nodded, “I knew you would say that, so that’s why I thought about it.”, he said. “Now, lets go share the news.”, he said, turning her around and walked them over to the door, making her giggling and she felt nervous to tell them, but she was to happy to care what his parents would say.

She opened the door and his parents looked relieved to see they were much better than they were ten minutes ago.

“Wassup?”, Ryan’s dad asked as he brought a can of Sprite up to his mouth to drink.

Lillian and Ryan looked at each other, chuckling, and Ryan wrapped his arm around her waist, “I asked Lillian to marry me.”.

Mereidth gasped, looking like she could dropped Zane and Chris coughed on his swallow, making some come out his mouth.

Ehh, if his parents reacted like that, I wonder how mine will, she thought.

******

Lillian was sitting on her parents love seat and Ryan nudged her legs. Her parents and sister look confused at how tensed and quiet they were being. Last night didn’t go so well with Ryan’s parents, they didn’t look so happy when they told them but after they explain they were going to wait until she graduate, they relax a little and Meredith was the first to give her support than after a little more talking with his dad, he gave them their support to.

Lillian got up and paused the TV show they were watching, “Um, I have something to tell you guys.”.

Of couse, Cassandra was the first to speak with her smartass, “Hey!”, she said firstly about the TV. She scuffed, “What, are you pregnant again?”, she sarcastically asked, reaching to grab the remote and Lillian reached away.

“No.”, she said and Cassandra looked away bored. She cleared her throat, feeling her stomach toss and turn in nervousness. “Um,”, she said, taking off her winter glover that was covering her ring hand, “Ryan proposed and I said yes!”, she said a little quickly or it would have never came out.

“No way!”, Cassandra said excitedly, turning around quicker than Lillian spoke.

                It was quiet—very quiet.

“Ehhh.”, Cassandra said, pulling at her jacket collar as she looked away from her paled parents.

“Okay, I know you guys are surprised, but,”, she started, swallowing the lump in her throat. “Ryan and I are going to wait until I graduate or maybe a little longer after that. Please, I don’t want you both to judge either of us, we know we’re young, but we love each other.”, she said, looking at Ryan and reached her hand out, wanting him to join next to her just in case if they decided to kill her, he’ll be killed to.

He stood up next to her, keeping his hand in her, “And we would like your approval.”.

                “I..”, her mother said

“You didn’t even come to me first.”, her father said, scuffing.

“True.”, Ryan said awkwardly. “I was going to in the spring, but I really wanted to ask Lillian. I hope you can forgive me.”

“How—I don’t know what to say.”, Lillian mom said as she looked at her father. “Hun?”

“I think I can get Ryan’s dad to put Ryan in jail still.”, he said and Lillian rolled her eyes.

“Dad, it would really mean a lot if you gave us your approval.”, Lillian said. “Yours to, mom. Please, I did think of it last night before I said yes.”.

“Honey, this is a very big thing.”, her mom said. “I mean, this is a very big decision. Marriage is a very big decisions.”

“I know and that’s why we’re not going to rush into anything.”, Lillian said. “We’re gonna wait until I graduate, I think almost two years is a enough time to make sure we’re doing the right thing.”

Her dad groaned and rubbed the back of his neck, “Lillian are you sure?”

“Honestly dad—I don’t.”, she said, then chuckled. “But I know I love Ryan enough to want to marry him and if it doesn’t work out in the next two year—we’ll know. Please, I don’t want any arguing or fighting, I want to be happy at this time.”

Her parents looked at each other for a minute before her mom put her hand on her dad shoulder before nodding, “Lillian’s a smart girl and if we love her, we’ll give it to her.”

Her dad sighed real long and hard before getting up and looked at Ryan serious. He held his hand out though, “Okay, I approve.”

“I wanna be a bridesmaid!”, Cassandra yelled excitedly as she jumped up from the floor.
