Chapter Twenty.
Lillian turned to look at Ryan as he drove to the Italian restaurant, “Wanna explain to me what your planning?’.
He chuckled and looked at her for a quick second, “Planning? I don’t know what you mean, I thought I would just take you out to eat.”
“With Duncan?”, she asked. “Who came up with the idea.”.
He shrugged and took one hand off the steering wheel, mumbling something but it sounded like he had mash potato in his mouth. She looked at him for a second with a look like she knew he was up to something—she isn’t sure what, but she knows it’s something not good.
When they arrived, Lillian grabbed a bored looking Zane and he pressed himself closer to her, protecting himself from the cold as they went over to the restaurant that size of a normal pizza parlor. Lillian looked around for Duncan, but she didn’t see him.
“Huh, he’s late.”, Ryan said, putting his hands on his coat pocket. “I expected it.”.
She gave him a bored look, shook her head, and sat down so they could wait for him. She bounced Zane on her thigh and he slugged forward, looking like he rather be at home watching SpongeBob on TV.
Five minutes passed, “He’s late, I mean, we just can’t wait here all nig—ahh, crap!”, Ryan said, quickly catching the thing that fell out of his pocket when he took his hands out and caught it before Lillian could see what it was. All she saw was that it was black.
“What was that?”, Lillian asked as her eyebrows came together.
“Nothing.”, he avoiding the question as he looked away. Before she could say anything, he looked out the window, “Oh there he is!”, he said and the door opened with Duncan coming in.
“Sorry I’m late, I had to do a few things my mom asked me to do.”, he said.
“We’ve be waiting.”, Ryan said. Lillian got up and placed Zane on her hip as her and Duncan walked behind Ryan over to the cashier and Duncan gave Lillian like he was asking if Ryan was forreal. “Hey, table for three.”
“Okay, follow me.”, she said and took them over to a booth. “Highchair for the boy?”, she asked, pinching Zane tiny chubby cheeks.
Lillian nodded, “Yes, thank you.”.
Ryan took Zane and held his arm out for her to go in first. She hesitated at first but slid in and sat down next to her. Ryan held Zane close to him as he watched Duncan look uncomfortable until the waitress came back with a high chair and Ryan strapped Zane in.
She took their drinks and they were allowed to go up the buffet
“I’ll wait here until you both finish.”, Lillian said since someone had to stay behind to be with Zane.
“Oh no, that’s okay.”, Duncan said. “You go, I don’t mind.”,
“Oh how sweet.”, Ryan sarcastically said as he grabbed Lillian arm and dragged her out of the booth, going over to the buffet to grab some food.
“You could relax a little.”, Lillian said as she grabbed a plate and started getting food.
“I am chilled, Lil.”, Ryan said and she rolled her eyes. He then stopped her by grabbed her arm and she looked at him confused, his eyes looked softer, “You look beautiful, Lil.”.
She couldn’t help but smile and push the right side of her hair back behind her ear, “Awe, thanks Ryan.”
He put an arm around her waist and pecked her.
They grabbed some food and when they got back, Duncan went up to get some. Ryan was ready Zane a little of his food that Zane could eat and of course, Zane grubbed it all up.
It was quiet when Duncan got back and Lillian felt like she should break it, “Sooo—how was everyone week?”
“Fine.”, Duncan said.
“Long.”, Ryan said and he looked up from eating when he felt Duncan questionable look. He shrugged, “I have a kid, you would feel tired also.”.
Duncan opened his mouth, but he looked like thought about it when Lillian looked away annoyed and looked like she wasn’t enjoying herself. He straighten up and smiled, “I’m glad we could do this, all hang out with each other and be friends. So Ryan, I heard you were in soccer last year. I use to be in soccer in sixth grade, but after awhile when I got so bored of winning, I tried football.”
Ryan bit into his lower lip and smiled, but Lillian could tell it was fake, “So how are the guys? I hear they say your pretty good.”, he said. “But you would be more fun if you weren’t so busy torturing Lil.”, he said and Lillian kicked him under the table, making him wince and press his lips together tightly, but never took his eyes off Duncan.
“Well Lily a real fun girl.”, he said and Lillian was surprised at the nickname. Only her brother Brad only ever called her Lily and Duncan has never said it before.
“Eh, eh, ah!”, Zane cried and Ryan went to pick him up, but Duncan was faster and grabbed Zane.
He bounced him, “Aw, it’s okay. It’s alright.”, he said and Zane stopped slowly. “Aw, see, everything alright. Yeah, you didn’t want to be stuck in there the whol—ugh!”, Duncan groaned as Zane through up on him a little.
Lillian brought her hand up to her mouth and Ryan laughed quietly as he looked down at his plate and ate, muttering ‘that’s my boy’
Duncan grabbed some napkins and cleaned his flannel shirt, “That’s okay, we all don’t feel okay sometimes.”
“That’s Zane’s signs he doesn’t like someone, ouch Duncan.” Ryan said.
“So, I’m going to go get more!”, Lillian said. “Excuse me Ryan.’.
After twenty minutes, it was mostly quiet again when Lillian trying to make small talk here and there. She thought tonight would go a little differently—she thought drama. But actually, she was just bored. If she wanted to be bored with a bowl of pasta, she could have done this at home. Home is where Law and Order is playing.
“I’m full.”, she said. “I can’t eat no more.”
“Well your gonna have to try.”, Ryan said and she raised an eyebrow at him. He grinned, “I asked if I could get a personally made hot lava cake with raspberries on top made for you.”.
Her eyes widen and smiled, “What!?”, she asked maybe to little excited. It was sweet of him not only get it personally made for her but it was chocolate! Something that was practically forbidden his parents house.
“I think your just going to love it, Lil.”, he said.
Ryan asked the waitress to bring it out and it took a moment, but she came out with a plate with a yummy hot cake with raspberries on the side with and vanilla ice cream under the few fruits.
“You didn’t have to do that.”, she said before taking a bit of the hot lava cake. She closed her eyes in delight and moaned, “It’s so good.”, she said, taking another bit before sticking her fork into a piece of raspberry and into the ice cream, but when she got close to the bottom, she hit something hard. Her eyebrows came together, “What the?”, she questioned, digging whatever was under the scoop of ice cream out and see if whoever made it was trying to kill her or something.
What she pulled out was something she didn’t expect to see. A golden band with a diamond in the middle with tiny diamond going down the side a little was covered in vanilla ice cream stared back at her.
It was really quiet.
Not sure what to do else, she brought the ring up to her mouth and put it in there, pretending as if she didn’t see it and hoping no one else did.
Ryan gasped, “Lillian!”, he shrieked, bring his hands up to her mouth and did his best to prey it open. He managed though and reached it, taking it out her mouth and cleaned it off with a napkin. “Are you crazy? That ring cost two hundred dollars.”.
“What was it doing in there?”, she asked, her stomach turning and making so much moment, she swears there was a baby in there moving. Her anxiety built up and she felt like the room was spinning. No, that couldn’t be what she thinks it is. She’s just thinking to much into it, it was probably just a gift.
“I was hoping it would be a surprise.”, he said. “This will surely be remembered.”.
He finished cleaning it off and it was just as beautiful cleaned. Her throat tighten up and she cleared her throat, “Why’d you get me a ring, Ryan?”.
“I was going to wait until spring, but Lil—“, he said, turning to face Lillian and she pressed her back against the wall.
Oh no! Oh no! Oh no!, she thought.
“Will you marry me?”, he asked and Lillian thought she could throw up any second.
