A Talk With the Police
By the next morning, the shock and panic of Dawkins and DJ having encountered a murderous criminal had mostly died down (it had taken hours to get all of them to sleep the night before), and they were all enjoying a (relatively) quiet breakfast when all of a sudden, there was a knock on the door. When Dylan answered it, he (along with everyone else in the family) looked up to see Pearl, who firmly asked right off the bat, "Is Dawkins home? I'm going to need to have a talk with him down at the station."
"What the-?" Dylan uttered out in a state of surprise before quickly turning his head over to his genius younger brother, "Dawkins, did you land someone in the hospital again?!"
"No," Dawkins defensively retorted before turning over to his music-loving brother, "you coming, DJ?"
"Uhh, no thanks," DJ responded somewhat nervously, "I'm kinda trying to get my mind off of yesterday."
"Okay then," Dawkins then turned and started following Pearl over to the Camden Police Station.
Once they both got there, Dawkins saw the same police pup from yesterday, and upon seeing the freckled pup who'd saved him, Alex quickly straightened up his vest and posture. This elicited a smile from Dawkins, causing Alex to blush.
Pearl led the freckled little genius pup into her "office" (which was really just a stable) and asked, "I'm sure you remember that whole debacle with Bludspill yesterday?"
"I do," Dawkins answered unhesitatingly, to which Pearl responded, "Well, we've managed to covet the weapon that he was wielding at the time. We tried to have it destroyed, but it seems to be nigh-indestructible."
"So why did you decide to call me here?" Dawkins asked, to which Pearl answered by continuing, "Because, Dawkins Dalmatian, we need you to hold the Skelefile with you for safekeeping."
"Me?!" the little genius pup exclaimed in absolute surprise. He was completely confounded by the fact that the police were entrusting him with such an item. This would definitely be a huge responsibility- perhaps more so than being left in charge of a house filled with 96 of his siblings. Being left with such a task would mean the fates of several citizens resting in his dexterous little paws.
"Yes," the police horse responded before continuing, "I trust that the same mind who created the memory-recording machine- very useful in collecting evidence- will be able to find a safer and more secure place to keep it than the humans working here could. It's also quite unlikely that after your confrontation with him yesterday, Bludspill would attempt to take the Skelefile back with the knowledge that you are guarding it."
Hearing this explanation/praise prompted Dawkins to start blushing a little and respond, "Yes, ma'am! I won't let you down."
"I doubt that you will," Pearl replied amusedly, as she found Dawkins being so serious to be rather adorable.
She then gave him a worn-out, dark-blue pouch that appeared to be covered in corn-yellow patches, but they were actually sewn on. She then informed the young genius pup, "You'll be using this to keep the Skelefile hidden when you have to carry it around in public. Understand?"
"Got it," Dawkins complied as he put the pouch on his back, placed the Skelefile inside, and started making his way home.
