My Country 2020
Adapted from Dorothea Mackellar's "My Country" for the #bushfires
*Language Warning*
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
But I love her so much fucking more,
When she's not going up in flames.
When her children aren't in gas masks,
Choosing to stay or go.
When they're not standing on the frontlines
With a prayer and a hose.
When her stark white ring-barked forest
Isn't being decimated,
While our pollies glance around and say
"Well Streuth – that escalated!"
When we're not scolding kids for protests,
'Cos they weren't given proper leave.
And then closing down the schools
Because the kids can't fucking breathe.
When our wildlife isn't dying,
In the millions as they flee
From a tragedy that we aided,
Ask the scientists (PhD).
I'm not trying to point the finger
That's not what Aussies do.
We knuckle down and crack right on
And that's how we make it through.
Our communities are strong,
Our charities are overwhelmed.
And our fire trucks and stations
have all nations at the helm.
Athletes donate their winnings,
Models offer up their nudes,
Everybody's chipping in
The Aussie way, tried and true.
Core of my heart, my country!
I'm so proud as you stand brave
In the face of such destruction
Because we know there's much to save.
I truly love this sunburnt country,
And I will for all my days.
But there'll be nothing left to love
If we don't act on Climate Change.
