Chapter 31

"Welcome to Voltron Road, guys." Shiro said.

"They made us a street?! Cool!" Lance said.

"Yep. We get free housing, plus we can all live in the same proximity of each other!" Shiro said.

"Oh, yay! 4 years wasn't enough!" Rora said, but there wasn't any sarcasm behind her voice.

"So how does this work?" Keith asked. "I see 6 houses."

"One for each Paladin. So, me, Keith, Lance, Pidge, Hunk, and Allura." Shiro said. "But obviously, you and Lance will be sharing a house, I assume?"

Lance nodded. "Yep."

"Leaving one house. Completely paid for, you have nothing tying you to this house." Veronica poked Lance's ribs with her elbow gently.

Lance turned. "Hey, Veronica, would you and Kassy like my house so I can go live with Keith?"

"Yes, we'd love that!"

"Honestly, I don't get why I don't get a house." Kassy said. "You know something? They're not even paying for my therapy for the Kerberos mission. Not a lick of compensation."

"You're getting nothing? I'm getting money for therapy." Shiro said.

"I get I don't work at the Garrison anymore but I put a lot of work in for them! I find it disgusting especially that you, Matt, and Sam get all the money you need and yet because I'm no longer an asset to them I get nothing." she shook her head.

Veronica placed a hand on her shoulder, a calming presence, and Kassy calmed.

"So, are the houses assigned, or do we just go choose?" Coran asked.

"I believe you go choose. 6 houses, I think Shiro should get first pick." Keith said. "He's our leader, plus he has a child, and everything."

"I have a child too, does that mean I get second pick?" Kassy asked.

"Surely the Paladins choose first." Allura replied.

"I was kidding. Veronica and I will be happy wherever. They're all 4 bedroom anyway, aren't they?"

"Yeah, there's not much difference between the houses. It's more of a case of do you want more garden, a conservatory, and what way around you want the kitchen and living room." Shiro replied. "That being said, I've had my eye on number 5. I'd like Keith to pick next."

"But not the mother of your child."

"Kassy, seriously, I will live alone by myself just to spite you." Lance said.

"I liked Number 4. Plus, it's the closest to the store, and going to the store is all I do with my life on Earth. And plus, the conservatory is so big! Like, I want like, a couch, a TV, a table, and- why are you all looking at me like that?"

"I think we've found Keith's calling." Rora said.

"Alright, Pidge, you choose next."

"Well, I wanted number 5. Just cos that's what I've been called for the last 4 years and I thought it would be funny. But if that isn't an option, I'd like 2. I like it's basement."

"Can I live with you?" Rora asked. Pidge nodded.

"Sure."

"Cheers. Hunk, you can choose next."

"I'll take 6. I think the front garden would be perfect for gardening and I wanna get into that. Kassy, Veronica, you choose next."

"Number 1."

"Why number one?" Pidge asked.

"I'm turning the master bedroom into my music room."

"Veronica hasn't spoken to you about this yet." Veronica said, laughing. "Which house is left?"

"Number 3." Allura said. "Coran, Romelle, looks like that one's ours."

"I want a pink room!" Romelle said, going up to the house.

Everyone headed to their respective houses.

Shiro entered, and realised it was the first time in years he'd been in an entirely empty building. The thought made him feel slightly apprehensive, however he explored each room, thinking about where the furniture would go.

4 bedrooms for one man, and a son who stayed over occasionally felt slightly overkill. Such a large house made him overwhelmed, especially there by himself. He thought of Curtis at work, and made a pact to himself, finally accepting he had to let Kassy go.

Kassy went through each room, and found the biggest. "My pianos going there, my guitar is going there, my drums are going there, I'll probably put my bass guitar on the wall, oh, and that's where my desk will go."

"Isn't this our bedroom?" Veronica asked. "The bed goes there, then there's the closet free, and that's where the mirror will go."

"Where else could my music room be?"

"The second bedroom isn't much smaller than this. It could go there, baby, then look. We can have Ulaz's room in here."

Kassy nodded. "Okay, sure. Then we have one spare room."

Veronica nodded. "Guest room."

Kassy looked away. "Or, you know. Another kid room."

Lance meanwhile, was setting up an airbed.

"I can't believe I'm doing this." Keith shook his head.

"It's just until the furniture comes, babe." Lance replied.

"It's barbaric!"

"Didn't realise you were such a snob, yeesh."

Keith looked away, arms folded. "I'm not."

He got it ready, and lay down. "Come cuddle me, snob boy."

Romelle ran around her new house, finding a room. She dropped her bag in it. "This is mine! I'm going to have pink walls, there's going to be my wardrobe here, my bed here, and a chandelier, and a white furry rug, and more pillows than Alteans!"

"Please choose your bedroom, Princess." Coran said. Allura found a room, and situated herself in it.

"I like this one."

"We're more than happy to help you with decor!" Romelle said. "We can get this room looking so beautiful!"

Allura nodded. "That would be most appreciated." she smiled.

Hunk hung up a photograph. It was the one from his party, the one of all of Team Voltron together. He smiled slightly.

Then he pulled out a second item. On his birthday, him and Maeve had gone to the photo booth - it had been made free after the Galra invaded - and had taken pictures of the two of them.

He smiled down at the 4 images, the two of them peace signing and pouting; back to back with arms folded; making a love heart with their fingers; Maeve's small figure pressed up against him, arms wrapped around his neck, smiling happily.

The soft reminiscing feeling was replaced with a soft bitterness, and Hunk frowned at the reminder, placing the pictures away. He realised then it hurt too much to look at her face.

Hunk stared out of the window, and saw Kassy leave her house, stood outside with a cigarette. She was in the same boat.

In fact, no she wasn't, Hunk thought to himself. Maeve to him was a girl he might have had a chance with; Maeve to Kassy was her entire reason for living at some point. Kassy was on the titanic, Hunk was drowning in a puddle.

He pulled the pictures out, and pinned them next to his other one.
