Chapter 10
Of course, the minute Kassy was better, her and Shiro returned to their cycle of "we shouldn't do this", and of course, proceeding to do it anyway.
Weeks passed. Things were fine - except, Kassy had become so on edge. She had been anxious before, of course, but she seemed downright stressed, snapping at everyone, breaking down into tears at the smallest things, generally not seeming herself.
It was about 2am; and Pidge was woken up. She was a light sleeper anyway, and it didn't take much sound to wake her up. What she heard was coming from the bathroom, and sounded like... throwing up?
She got out of bed, and went down the hallway, finding Kassy hunched over the toilet and vomiting.
"Kassy? You okay?"
"Oh, Pidge, sorry I woke you. Yeah, I'm fine."
"Are you sick again?" It had been a grand total of 5 weeks since she had been ill. "That's kinda shit if you are."
Kassy flushed the toilet, leaning against the wall. "Oh, I probably just ate something bad."
Pidge crossed her arms. She thought for a moment. "Kassy, you've kind of been an emotional wreck these last few weeks. More than usual. And you've seemed tired. Now this."
"Yeah? And?"
"Do you think you could be pregnant?"
Kassy tried to show no reaction, but Pidge saw her eyes widen slightly.
"Whaaat? Oh, Pidge, don't be silly, how could I be pregnant? I haven't even had sex, since I was on earth."
"Don't bother lying. We all know about Shiro."
Her smile dropped. "Oh, God, I can't be pregnant in a space war!"
"Hey, don't panic. We can go ask Coran." she grabbed her hand. "You need to know, though. Do you want me to wake up Shiro?"
"No. Not until I know."
Pidge and Kassy headed to the medic bay. Coran was in there, listening to Gimme Gimme Gimme, and a cup of tea.
"It's the middle of the night, is everything okay?"
"Turn that off, Coran. We have an emergency. I think Kassy's pregnant."
Coran looked surprised for a moment. "Pregnant? Like, expecting a baby? Well, I can check." He started the full-body scan. "Why'd you think that?"
"Emotional outbursts. She's been so tired. And now she's throwing up. It's the classic symptoms."
Coran nodded. "Well, it's understandable why you'd think that."
"What does it say?"
He glanced upwards. "Congratulations, Kassy, you're pregnant."
Kassy stared at him, seemingly frozen, her eyes wide.
"Kassy? You okay?" Pidge asked.
She didn't answer for a second. "I'm pregnant."
"Yep! You and Shiro are going to be parents."
"Even you know?! Oh, my God, I can't be pregnant. I can't have a baby. I cant be a mother! Oh, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. Oh, I need to sit down." Pidge grabbed Kassy's arm, helping her to sit down. "How pregnant am I?"
"Well, it's not really... not really a question of how. You either are or you aren't." Coran replied.
"No, no, how many weeks?"
"6 weeks."
"How am I 6 weeks pregnant? I had my period."
"Might not have been. Could have been spotting, or implantation bleeding. I get the feeling you're a bit freaked out. I'll go make you some tea so you can calm down." Coran said.
"You want me to get Shiro now?" Pidge asked. Kassy nodded, and she ran off.
Coran returned with some tea. "There, now."
"How did this happen?" she mumbled.
"Well, you see, when a man and a woman-"
"I know how it happened. I just meant... fuck." She pushed some of her hair from her face.
"It's completely normal to have some anxiety."
She shook her head. "How am I gonna do this?"
"What's going on?" Shiro asked, going into the medic bay. "You okay, Kassy? You look kinda peaky."
"Sit down, Shiro. Tell him, Coran." Pidge said, giving Shiro a gentle push. He took a seat next to Kassy.
"What's going on?"
"Kassy's pregnant."
Shiro looked at him, then at Kassy, then at Pidge, and back at Coran. "W-what?"
"She's having a baby. You're going to be a dad."
"Oh, fuck." Shiro mumbled.
"That's what I said." Kassy replied.
"Yep, about 6 times." Coran said. "Now, I get it's a shock, but there's plenty we can do to help her through the pregnancy!"
"Pidge, has there ever been a pregnant woman in space?" Shiro asked. Pidge shook her head.
"Never."
"Well, there is always the risk of miscarriage. That's true of any pregnancy. You might want to take it easy." Coran said.
"We're in a space war. How does she take it easy when we have the Galra shooting at us from every angle?" Shiro asked.
"We'll work something out. Listen, Shiro, I promise I will do everything I can to make sure both Kassy and the baby get through this safely."
Kassy cleared her throat, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Admittedly, Shiro, I... I'm excited. Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely petrified. But..."
Shiro pulled her into a hug. "Oh, no, no. This is exciting. I just have some concerns."
She nodded. "Understandable."
"Well, it's been a long day. All I can suggest now is going to bed and taking some time to sleep on it."
They nodded. "Yeah. I guess you're right." Shiro said.
Kassy got up. "No idea how Ill sleep after that, but, sure."
The two left, and paused outside Shiro's room.
"I don't think I can sleep, either." Shiro said.
"Can I stay with you tonight? I'm kind of shaken." Kassy replied. He nodded.
"Of course you can."
They entered, and lay in bed together, her as the big spoon, him as the little.
"Night, Shiro."
"Night, Kassy."
