xvi. glowing eyes

When Lorelei pulled into a parking spot at school with Isaac in the passenger seat. She turned the car off and pulled down her video, checking on her makeup in the mirror, The boy in the passenger seat practically sprinted out of the car, muttering a small, "see you at lunch" before shutting the door and running off.

Lorelei barely got a response out before the boy was gone. She rolled her eyes, shaking her head at Isaac's sudden need to get out of her car. She turned back to her mirror, reapplying her lipgloss and rubbing her lips together to spread the product around evenly.

She closed her visor, finally showing her what Isaac ran to.

Standing at the doors of the high school was Isaac, Stiles, Scott, and the twins. Lorelei's eyebrows furrowed. Aiden never brought up coming back to school.

Her eyes stayed on the five boys as she reached behind her, grabbing her backpack from the backseat and getting out of her car.

By the time Lorelei got close, Scott, Stiles, and Isaac were already headlining inside the school, leaving the twins outside, both of them staring at the doors of the school they just walked toward.

Lorelei held onto her backpack straps, smiling up at Aiden as she got closer to him and his brother.

"Hey!" She called out, making Ethan and Aiden's heads snap in her direction. Aiden immediately smiled at the sight of Lorelei and Ethan smirked at the girl—or the way his brother smiled at her.

Aiden muttered a small, "hey," leaning down and kissing the girls cheek. With her head turned, Lorelei locked eyes with Ethan. The boy smiled at the blonde and Lorelei smiled back, mouthing a greeting to him.

When Aiden's lips started to pulled away from her cheek, Lorelei turned back to face him. Her eyebrows furrowed and she held onto her backpack straps a little tighter.

"You're back?" Lorelei asked, turning to Ethan at the end of her sentence.

She watched the twins turn to each other. It was like they were having a silent conversation with each other. Honestly, Lorelei wouldn't be surprised if they could read each other's minds.

After a couple moments of silence, Aiden turned back to Lorelei, his lips slowly twitching into a smile.

"Yeah, I'm back!" The boy revealed, trying not to react when Ethan snickered at the boys switch in attitude on coming back to school.

"I'll catch you later" Aiden asked Ethan as he casually wrapping his arm around Lorelei's shoulder, shooting a glare toward his brother from over the girl's head.

Ethan just nodded, holding back his fit of laughter, especially when Lorelei turned to face him.

"Bye, Ethan." The girl hummed, waving to the boy.

Ethan gave Lorelei a genuine smile, nodding his head once and waving goodbye to the girl as his brother led her into the school.

Lorelei almost forgot what day it was until she stepped into the school. She might not have forgotten Mischief night, but she sure did forget the chaos that came with it.

She rolled her eyes as the student's throwing rolls of toilet paper down the halls and the echoing of screaming voices. Lorelei and Aiden continued to walk down the hallway, heading toward Lorelei's locker.

Aiden's eyebrows furrowed at the sight around him. He squinted before turning to look down at Lorelei still under his arm. "What is all of this?" He asked and Lorelei sighed.

"Mischief night." She murmured, turning to look up into Aiden's eyes. "The day and night before Halloween, Beacon Hills turns into 24 hours of absolute hell. Pranks, stupidity... Mischief. It's like the purge but... you know, no one dies."

...

Lorelei might've thought the idea of Mischief night was a little childish, but god, did she love seeing the pranks Coach Finstock had to go through every year.

"Son of a bitch!" The man's voice echoed from his office connected to the economics classroom.

Lorelei's head snapped up from her book just as the door to the office flew open. From behind the angry man, Loreleis could see everything in his office on the floor.

The whole class started to snicker, even Lorelei. She had to bring her hand up to her face to stifle the laughs when he stomped into the classroom like a child, his face as red as a tomato.

"Mischief night, devil's night! I don't care what you call it!" You little punks are evil!" Finstock screamed, his finger waving around to point at the entire class, only making them all laugh harder.

Finstock's face hardened and his eyes got freakishly wide. Slowly, Lorelei stopped laughing and gulped when the man brought up a shaky finger to point at her and the rest of the class. "You think it's funny?" He asked, his voice shaking in anger as he continued. "Every Halloween my house gets egged! A man's house is supposed to be his castle. Mine's a fricking omelet!"

He turned around to face the whiteboard and froze when his eyes fell on a small gift sitting at the center of the desk. The man let out a dry laugh, reaching for the present.

"Oh, this? We're gonna do this again?" Finstock scoffed. He tossed the present in his hands a couple times and Lorelei could see him getting angrier by the second. Finstock shook his head, biting his lip in anger.

"I don't think so." He muttered before throwing the gift on the ground.

Lorelei flinched the action and her eyes widened when she actually heard something shatter inside.

It seemed like Coach was just as shocked as she was that something was actually inside the wrapped box. Slowly, he bent down and peeled off the small card connected to the present. When Finstock stood back up, he cleared his throat and opened the note.

"Happy birthday! Love, Greenberg." He grumbled in a monotone voice. The man scoffed under his breath and crumbled the note in his hand.

It was as if the noise triggered Lorelei. The second she heard the crinkling of Greenberg's note, Lorelei's entire vision was white and her breath caught in her throat.

She couldn't see anything, only a complete emptiness of white. Normally, the vast sea of nothingness would only last for a couple of seconds before her vision started, but nothing changed. All she could see was white.

But faintly, Lorelei couldn't hear the tiniest buzz.

It was practically nothing. Almost like white noise, but a little louder and a little more annoying.

When class was over, she was shaken up. Lorelei didn't move the rest of class. She didn't take notes, she didn't raise her hand, she didn't even look up from her desk. She just stared. The buzzing didn't stop after her vision ended, instead it just quieted, echoing in her head as if she wasn't supposed to forget it.

When class finally ended, Lorelei walked out stiffly. Her hands held the straps of her backpack so tight, her knuckles turned white and her hands started to shake. She kept her head down, shimmying past people until she was out of the classroom. Lorelei barely made it three steps out of the room before someone was walking beside her, their shoulder bumping into hers from how close they were walking next to her.

"Coach's class was that bad?" The voice asked and Lorelei relaxed when she realized it was only Aiden. Her grip on her backpack loosened and she finally looked away from the floor to look up at the boy. She gave him a smile that didn't reach her eyes and the smile on the Steiner boy's face shifted, noticing it.

"Just feeling a bit off..." Lorelei muttered, shaking her head and turning back to face front.

Aiden nodded, frowning a little at her words. He tried to think of ways to lift her spirits and when a risky idea popped into his head, he slowly started to smirk. Aiden's arm dropped from Lorelei's shoulders, down to snake around her waist. He looked down at the girl just as she turned to look up at him.

Lorelei's eyebrows raised at the smirk on Aiden's face. When he leaned down to get closer to her ear, Lorelei felt her face start to burn. She knew Aiden could probably hear the way her heart rate picked up, but she hardly cared.

"I know what could help." He muttered, pulling her a little bit closer by her waist.

The second Lorelei crashed into Aiden's chest, she felt a fit of butterflies erupt in her stomach. She looked up at Aiden as he started to lean away from her ear. When their eyes locked, Aiden raised his eyebrows, silently asking if she wanted to.

Lorelei hardly remember turning around and making a beeline toward Coach's office. The second Aiden opened the door for her and she was inside, Lorelei was pressed against the door, Aiden pinning her against it with his hands still on her waist, and kissing her.

Lorelei let out a muffled yelp through their kiss when Aiden suddenly lifted her. The boy turned around, bending over to rest Lorelei in the desk that should've been behind her, but when Aiden stepped forward and nothing was there, they froze.

Lorelei slowly lowered from Aiden's arm and she looked behind her to see Coach's office completely destroyed. She was so frazzled by her vision, she completely forgot someone had ruined the man's office for Mischief Night.

"Oh, yeah... I forgot about that..." Lorelei muttered, wincing at the sight of Coach's office. Seeing it now, Lorelei could see why he was so upset when he marched into class earlier.

Slowly, Lorelei looked up at Aiden. She was still cringing, biting her lips as she thought of something to do.

Aiden on the other hand, looked completely unbothered. His lips were pursed and he squinted as he tried to think of another place they could go. Lorelei could practically see the lightbulb turn on in his head. He looked down to Lorelei, his arm snaking around her waist again as he slowly started to smile.

"Guidance office?" He asked, his voice having a tinge of hopefulness.

Lorelei's face immediately started to relaxed and she was up on her feet, her hand sliding down to interlock with Aiden's before tugging him out of the room and toward the guidance office.

...

During passing period, Isaac walked with Lorelei to their shared math class. They were just about to walk into the classroom when Scott, Allison, and Lydia practically sprinted up to them. Scott grabbed the back of Isaac's shirt while Allison grabbed Lorelei's arm, tugging them away from their class.

Scott and Stiles started to explain in a jumbled panic that Stiles found out from his dad that William Barrow, the shrapnel bomber, was at the hospital for a surgery when he suddenly woke up, fled from the building, and was last seen near campus. Lorelei felt her stomach churn at that. She read articles about the man and he was absolutely terrifying. From the acts he committed all the way down to his headshot, Lorelei couldn't stomach the idea of the man.

So hearing he was near the school and going after kids with glowing eyes just like he had done in the past made Lorelei petrified.

"No one knows how he woke up from anesthesia. Just that when they opened him up, they found a tumor full of live flies." Scott explained and Lorelei was just about to cringe hearing what happened until she froze, actually listening to Scott's words.

Flies.

Lorelei's steps halted and she stared at the back of Scott's head, physically not able to look anywhere else even if she tried. She didn't even notice Lydia stopped walking next to her, that same frozen fear in his face as Lorelei.

Stiles nodded in agreement with Scott, turning to walk backward so he can see everyone as he pointed to him. "Which in any other circumstance would be all kinds of awesome." Stiles said and as soon as he got his entire sentence out, his eyes moved to the two unmoving girl's. For a second, Stiles squinted in confusion, wondering what was wrong with them before he realized that the banshee and the witch that get visions are the two that stopped walking.

Immediately, Stiles changed his direction, making a beeline toward Lorelei and Lydia. "Oh no..." Stiles muttered, making Scott, Isaac, and Allison all turn around to see what he was talking about.

Once Stiles was standing toe to toe with the two girls, he sighed. "What is it?" He breathed out.

Lorelei was the first to believe to look at Stiles. Her eyes looked empty when they met Stiles's. She swallowed the lump forming in her throat and shook her head. "I had a vision in econ... It was completely white, but there was this... buzzing." Lorelei explained, bringing her hand up to her head as if it would help her form her words better.

Stiles was about to scold her, reprimand her for not coming to her about the vision sooner, especially since they sit side by side in that class, but before he could get his words out, Lydia spoke up, finally turning to him.

"All day I have been hearing this buzzing..." She whispered.

Stiles licked his eyes and tried to control his face to not show the frustration he was feeling between the two girls. He looked back and forth between them before clearing his throat and raising his eyebrows. "Like the sound of flies?" He asked, already knowing the answer.

At the exact same time, Lorelei and Stiles relocked their eyes on him and nodded. "Exactly like the sound of flies."

...

Lorelei was planning on spending her lunch with Aiden, but just as the two met up to head toward the back of the school, Stiles came up to them, or rather, crashed into them, insisting that Lorelei follow him while Aiden meets up with his brother, Scott, and Isaac outside of Coach's office.

Stiles led Lorelei to the second floor where Lydia was already waiting for them. The three of them searched for Barrow in every classroom, hoping he'd pop up.

After the fourth or fifth classroom—Lorelei lost count out of complete boredom—Lydia stopped in the middle of the doorway to the next class to check, her arms crossed over her chest as she raised her eyebrows at Stiles.

"Scott, Isaac, and the twins are in the basement, right?" She asked, also starting to get annoyed with searching for the man.

Stiles nodded along, barely giving Lydia his complete attention as he slid his way into the classroom to continue his search.

"Yeah. The plan is we meet in the middle, in the boiler room." He shrugged off, not even looking at the girl from over his shoulder.

Lorelei and Lydia froze in the doorway of the classroom. They stared at Stiles, blinked, turned to each other, and then turned back to Stiles with dumbfounded looks on their faces.

Slowly, Lorelei crossed her arms, giving Stiles an annoyed look for the attitude he had for somehow to have made such a bad plan.

"All of the wolves—aka, the ones with glowing eyes are in the basement in the boiler room?" Lorelei asked, her voice snippier than normal.

Stiles turned around to face the two girls, ready to give a sarcastic answer back before he realized what Lorelei had just said. In an instant, Stiles's eyes were the size of saucers and he was running back toward the girls to get out of the room.

"Oh, my god! We have to get them out of there!" Stiles panicked as he, Lorelei, and Lydia walked back out into the hall.

Lorelei looked at Stiles as if he had three heads, throwing her hands out exasperatedly. "We have to get everyone out!" She yelled back, correcting the boy. Stiles ran a panicked hand through his hair and turned back to Lorelei. When their eyes locked, he threw his hand that was just in his hair, off to the side, looking between the blonde and Lydia.

"Okay, how do we do that?" Stiles asked, looking around as if to prove a point. Lorelei brought her hand up to her mouth, nervously chewing on her thumbnail as she tried to think of something. From beside her, Lydia looked around the hall.

Her eyes landed on the sprinklers on the ceiling and immediately, Lydia's eyes widened and her jaw fell.

"Fire." She whispered, but Lorelei and Stiles heard her. The two of them snapped their heads to Lydia then snapped their heads to the fire sprinkler she was staring up at. Lorelei took slow steps toward the sprinkler. She muttered something under her breath and Stiles and Lydia either couldn't hear or couldn't understand.

Within seconds, Lorelei's left hand was covered in flames. Once the blonde was staring directly under the sprinkler, she raised her hand.

The fire in her palm slowly started to rise. It wasn't aggressive like a fireball, it was soft, as if it was being drawn to the fire alarm.

Stiles and Lydia watched Lorelei in amazement. In no time, the fire alarm started blare. Lorelei immediately winced, the flames immediately extinguishing for her palm and disappearing into a gray smoke.

Lorelei's hands flew to her ears and she had to ignore the slight burning she felt from her hand that was just on fire now touching her face. She turned around, heading back to Lydia and Stiles before the three of them ran out of the school to evacuate with the rest of campus.

It took around five minutes for Lorelei, Stiles, and Lydia to find the four werewolves in the crowd of evacuating students and faculty. Before any of the three could ask if they found anything, the four werewolves all shook their heads and Aiden sighed, his eyes focused on Lorelei.

"We didn't find anything." He muttered, slightly out of breath and Isaac on his right, huffed, shook his head. "Not even a scent."

Stiles looked between the group, his eyebrows raised and his arms out in confusion. "Does that mean everybody's safe?" He asked and when his eyes settled on Lydia, the strawberry blonde nervously shrugged.

"I don't know." She whispered.

Isaac watched the girl for a few seconds before looking at Lorelei beside her. His eyebrows raised at the blonde, wondering if she had any gut feeling.

"Lor?" Isaac asked, making everyone turn to her now. Lorelei looked over the boys and Lydia circled around her. She could still hear the buzzing, but they didn't find Barrow. She didn't know what that meant so she just shrugged, her mouth opening and closing for a second.

"I don't know."

...

After school, Lorelei and Isaac headed back home. When they got inside the house, Lorelei made a beeline to her room and Isaac, smelling the worry coming off of the girl, followed after her.

Lorelei didn't close the door after she walked inside her room, hearing Isaac's footsteps right behind her.

As soon as Isaac was in the room, he closed the door behind him, turning around to face Lorelei, who was already heading toward her bed tiredly.

"Are you okay?" Isaac asked, shoving his hands in his front pockets as Lorelei collapsed onto her bed. She stared up at her ceiling, her chest tightening and forcing her to take a deep breath.

"I just... I have this gut feeling we missed something." Lorelei muttered, squinting at the white popcorn ceiling above her.

Isaac frowned at her words. He hated that she couldn't see that she could feel and hear all these things he couldn't help her with. She's helped him so much; got him out of his dad's house, gave him a place to stay, a family. Isaac just wanted to give back to Lorelei.

"We were onto something." Isaac breathed out, stepping toward the foot of the girl's bed.

Lorelei pushed herself up by her hands and moved to lay back on her elbow. She turned to Isaac, squinting up at him and shaking her head. "Even though we couldn't find any proof of Barrow being there?" She asked, more snippy than she meant to be, but it was too late to take it back.

Plus, it only made Lorelei dart toward her. His hands practically flew out of his pockets and he moved to sit beside Lorelei on her bed. "Lor, your vision have never been wrong, right? With the birds, the motel, the darach, it's always been right. Don't start doubting yourself now." Isaac tried to reassure, his eyes never leaving Lorelei's so she'd believe him.

But Lorelei looked away, her entire body slumped as she let out a small breath. Isaac sighed, moving a little so he was back in the girl's line of sight. "Barrow was there. You knew it, okay?" Isaac asked, but Lorelei didn't respond. She just stared ahead of her.

After a couple of seconds, Lorelei moved to sit up right. She pulled her knees up to her chest and rested her cheek on her knees.

"We're gonna figure this out." He whispered, scooting closer to Lorelei and wrapping an arm around her shoulders, pulling her into his side.

...

Lorelei needed to get out of the house. Just sitting in her room, hearing the constant, annoying buzzing drove her crazy. She needed to get her mind off of it. Lorelei needed a distraction.

So she called Aiden and within ten minutes, he was outside of her house on his motorcycle with an extra helmet under his arm.

Lorelei didn't really know where Aiden was taking her. She told him she needed a distraction and Aiden said he had the perfect place, riding off before Lorelei could ask anymore questions.

They had been on the motorcycle for around five minutes when an ear-piercing scream made Aiden swerve. Lorelei yelped, holding onto the boys waist tighter as Aiden made sure the two of them didn't crash.

Aiden pulled over almost immediately. He ripped off his helmet and looked at Lorelei with wide eyes.

"What the hell was that?" Aiden cursed, slightly out of breath from panic. His eyes trained over Lorelei's body, making sure she wasn't injured even though he hadn't crashed or hit anything.

But Lorelei did stare off in front of the two of them. Aiden squinted, wondering what Lorelei was thinking before the blonde turned back to him, her eyes locking onto Aiden's. She knew what that noise was. She knew that high-pitched scream from anywhere. Lorelei could spot it in a line up.

"Lydia."

Then, Lorelei's vision went white again. She let out a sharp gasp, her grip on Aiden tightening.

In the white, Lorelei could still hear the buzzing. It was sporadic, not as constant as it had been all day.

Then, the white flashed brighter, a loud "zap!" noise making her flinch just as it happened before it quieted with a fainter static.

Lorelei gasped, her vision going back to normal. Once she got her vision to refocus one what was actually around her and not in her head, Lorelei's eyes landed on Aiden, who was practically twisted in a complete 180° to look at her.

"Lor? Are you okay?" Aiden asked softly, but Lorelei could hear the panic in his voice.

"It's not flies..." Lorelei whispered under her breath, her eyes widening in realization.

Aiden's eyebrows furrowed at her muttering. "Lor, what?" Aiden asked and Lorelei's gaze snapped to Aiden, her eyes still widening and her lips parted.

Instead of answering his question, Lorelei leaned closer to him, readjusting her grip on him. "Can you pick up Scott's scent and head to him?"

Aiden looked away from Lorelei for a second, sniffing to try and pinpoint the boy's scent. After a couple seconds, Aiden turned back to Lorelei and nodded.

"He's with Stiles and Lydia." Aiden said and Lorelei nearly smiled. It was perfect. Almost everyone was there and if Lydia screamed, she probably figured it out too.

"Go to them!" Lorelei shrieked, lightly slapping Aiden's shoulder to urge him to go.

And even though he didn't really get an answer, Aiden listened. He figured he'd find out whatever Lorelei saw once they got to everyone else. Aiden's as jsut about to turn around to tell Lorelei to readjust her grip on him, but before he could get the words out, he felt Lorelei's grip tighten and her body shimmy closer to his.

Aiden had to hold back smirking as he made his way toward Scott, Stiles, and Lydia.

Lorelei and Aiden found the three on the street of an unfamiliar neighborhood road. Lorelei barely gave Aiden time to stop the bike before she hopped off, nearly tripping over her own feet. She ripped off her helmet just as Lydia let out a shaky breath from in front of her.

"It's not flies!" Lydia said, but Stiles and Scott looked away from Lydia and snapped their heads to Lorelei and Aiden, the wide eyed look they were just giving Lydia now on Lorelei.

"It's electricity." Lorelei breathed out, her heart pacing as her chest quickly moved up and down.

Stiles's eyes widened at Lydia and Lorelei's epiphany. His gaze moved to the ground for a second to collect his thoughts before he looked to Scott beside him. "Wait a second, Barrow was an electrical engineer. He worked at a power substation. That must be where he took Kira."

Lorelei's eyes nearly popped out of her head hearing what Stiles had said. She looked between him, Scott, and Lydia before turning to the house they were all standing outside of. The small, freshly painted mailbox outside of the home had "Yukimura" written neatly on it in cursive.

Lorelei turned back to Scott, her eyes still wide. "Wait! He took Kira?" The girl yelped, but before Scott could answer her, Stiles was rushing toward her, Aiden and Lydia.

His hand found the small of Lydia's back quickly and he ushered the girl toward his Jeep. "We can explain on the way." Stiles breathed out and everyone immediately got the hint that Stiles would drive the five of them to Barrow and Kira.

...

When Stiles pulled up to the substation Barrow used to work at, Aiden and Scott hopped out of the car and dashed out. Stiles took a little longer, struggling to grab his metal baseball bat that he put at Lorelei and Lydia's feet.

Once he finally got a grasp on his bat, Stiles scrambled out the Jeep. He quickly caught himself before he hit the ground and spun around to talk to the two girls through Lydia's rolled down window.

"Okay. Wait here, all right? Just wait for the cops to come." Stiles said, his voice already out of breath even though he had only gotten out of the car.

Lydia's face scrunched and her eyebrows furrowed. She blinked in shock at Stiles, shaking her head. "Me? Wait, why?" The girl practically shrieked and Stiles gave her a look as if the answer was obvious and raised the bat in his hands.

"I only have one bat."

Lorelei raised her eyebrows, leaning forward so she could see Stiles from over Lydia. She raised a finger, pointing to herself. "What about me?" Lorelei asked, almost challenging the boy.

Stiles looked in between the two girls before his gaze settled on Lorelei and he gestured to Lydia with a nod of his head.

"Keep Lydia company." Stiles muttered, again with the obvious attitude. Before either of the girls could complain, Stiles turned and ran inside the substation after Scott and Aiden.
