Story first or when things are not so simple
03.04.81, 1:04 p.m., Castle Rock City Detective Bureau:
It was 1881 and our hero in his 20 years of age got a case on his first day of work. The young and inexperienced young man took it up with excitement. The assignment sounded like this:
Date: 03.03.81;
Victim: Louisa Gabster:
Occurrence: theft:
Lost: diamond necklace;
Estimated cost: 50000 $;
Address: USA, Colorado state, Cast Rock city, 17 Spring Street, house 3.
(A/N: don't ask why the numbers of the house are different)
Reading the case, Jack forgot about everything in the world and thought only about the task and how to realize it.
03.05.81, 08:52 am, Castle Rock city, 17 Spring Street, house 2:
Riding past the houses that smelled of flowers, Brown, stroking Mr. Jacques, didn't even notice when the horse neared the fence. The newly minted detective rang the bell and saw in the doorway a frightened and agitated elderly woman of about 70, in expensive attire and jewelry with a large and pudgy cat in her arms. Mrs. Gabsler took Jack by her weak feminine hand and led him into the living room, where he repented the details:
"The day before yesterday about three in the afternoon, coming home from a walk I saw footprints of shoes that ran to the window and then there were shards of glass, they were not very much, probably the thief jumped out the window."
After listening to the old woman tell the story in her husky and calm voice, the young man became excited and gathering his thoughts, he asked what the thief looked like, to which the pensioner replied that she could not describe, as she had not had time to put on her pince-nez.
Afterward, Jack went home and thought about it for a long time. There were a lot of possibilities. For a whole hour he pondered. Only after a while he remembered that he had seen scratches on the wooden frame of the window. After another twenty-four hours the detective returned to the scene of the crime and while he was getting there, Jack was terribly worried, he thought that suddenly he would not be able to solve the case and would not get a dime and just like yesterday the young man did not notice how the horse had fallen into the fence. Ringing the bell Brown met Mrs. Gabsler and walked quietly into the living room. After examining the window more closely the young man left quickly. It didn't take Jack much time to look at it.
When he arrived at the bureau, detective Brown gave the details and said that the thief had been caught and that the scratches on the frame were marks from the fact that the thief had tried to disappear without leaving a trace, but had had to break the window. After listening to the young investigator at the bureau, Jack was released home.
03.08.81, 09:27 am, Tailfelter Way, wild field:
It was Sunday morning, Jack woke up and drank coffee, went for a walk with Mr. Jacques and then for some unknown reason he was called to work on his legal day off. Puffy and excited Jack arrived at the bureau and heard the news:
"Mr. Brown, you won't believe this. Mrs. Gasbler has been robbed again! This time her pearl earrings were stolen with an estimated value of $20,000! Go to the same address immediately!"
10:02 a.m., Castle Rock city, 17 Spring Street, house 3:
Before reaching the gate detective jumped off the horse and jumped over a low fence he did not ring the bell and opened the door, running into the living room Jack quickly sat down on the sofa, on the edge of which sat and cried Mrs. Habsler Hearing the footsteps of the investigator pensioner said that when she woke up, she did not see her earrings with pearls that her mother gave her, And it turned out to be half the trouble, today the woman's cat, whose name was Sam, was missing. It was a tragedy for the owner, because the cat was actually a member of the family.
The young investigator even let a tear, because also had a four-legged friend and if he was missing, then for our hero, as well as for Mrs. Gabsler it would be a disaster.
Jack calmed the woman down and suggested they walk around the house and get some fresh air. They went out to the porch and suddenly they heard a rustle in the flowers, the lady immediately jumped back and shrieked, and the young man only shuddered, but daringly he stretched his hands into the bushes.
"Oh! Who're the fluffy ones there?" Jack said these words and picked up three cute gray kittens who were playing with the missing jewelry. Sam ran out of the flowerbed after the kittens and jumped into his mistress's arms. It turned out it was the woman's birthday and the detective thought he should wish her a happy birthday and said, "This is for you, Mrs. Gabsler! Consider it my birthday present to you!" he was about to leave, but the woman stopped him and offered to stay to celebrate with her guests and taste her specialty cake. Jack decided not to refuse and stayed.
The story had a good ending, the guests came, Sam's kittens, whom the owner had renamed Susie, were given to relatives, and the detective returned to the bureau to tell them everything. Jack thought it was a complicated case, but he didn't know that there were more complicated cases waiting for him.
