FIFTEEN

Sachiko's PoV

My frown deepened as I cross my arms, "how could and why should I do that? Shiki is obviously perfectly fine in the human realm at his current job."

Nozomu returned the look, "I know you're a toast candidate who just got lucky. I also know how much mysteries you have on yourself. Sachiko, I know a member of your family."

I scoffed, "is that all you got? You expect me to believe you just like that?"

"You have a twin brother, isn't that right?" he says calmly, "I know him, and he has already seen you."

I can feel my breathing hitch for a second. Why do I get the feeling that he's telling me the truth?

"...What else do you know?" I find myself asking. If I can see my brother for the last time before my death, that's half satisfying already.

He smiled, "that's the trade information to you if, you can convince Shiki to go back home."

"How am I supposed to do that?"

"That's up to you." He says with a small smile.

Don't. That voice inside says again. Don't. I decide to listen to it. After all my mind has never done me harm.

I scoff, "what makes you think I'll need your help?"

With that, I pointed to the window, "Please leave." I turned on my heels and left that room. That I didn't see the smirk on his face before he flew out of my window.

~~

On my way back to the demon house, I was in thought.

If I'm not human, then I don't live by a soul, then Kakeru won't be able to manipulate that life force. Which means...I don't need to die.

But what if I got tested on and injected by medicine that gave me weird abilities? Like those sci-fi movies. If that's so then I'm still a human! Just with supernatural powers!

I kept on walking. Didn't realize a truck was coming at me until a large honking noise shocked me awake.

"Watch it!"

When I opened my eyes, I was lying on something, at the sidewalk.

"You could've killed yourself...." A familiar voice rang. I stiffen then looked up.

"It doesn't really matter...does it?" I say with a sad smile. Satoru frowned.

"You still have two more days. A deal's a deal. I won't let you die before that." He said with more force than I thought. I stare at him. I realize no people nearby were stopping. I look around us, he set up a barrier.

He sighed, "Come with me." I was swept up right then and I realize we took off into the air.

Satoru's PoV

Kakeru told me to make sure Sachiko was home today before dark. So I followed her out of work. I heard her conversation with Nozomu, Shiki's childhood friend. I was afraid she'd agree. With what I know of her so far, she just might can get Shiki to agree somehow. But relief washed over me when she sassily refused and sent him away.

She really is something.

I don't know why, there's this attraction from her to me. It's like we have similar background or whatsoever. I feel like she can understand me.

That morning, the morning after I messed things up and didn't take her to dinner after all, she was acting bashful and hesitant. Obviously implying that she stayed over at a man's house. I subconsciously frowned. Kakeru let her off the hook after.

When everyone scattered away for work, I glanced back at her smirking. She acted.

Ever since Kakeru decided to help her, he's been going around the demon realm searching for info. I don't get how he's putting so much effort into this human. She's due to die in two days anyway.

I thought that, but when I saw a truck coming at her. Instincts set up my barrier and flew to her.

I haven't really talked to her ever since that night. I was getting emotionally attached to her for no reason, it frustrates me. I guess that's how I resulted in pushing her away.

"By the way...." I ask her, we were in the air, flying towards the demon house, "do you have any mementos? From your parents or siblings?"

"...I don't think so. Why?" She shifted in my arms.

"I can see the future of the people who owns an important item as well. So I might be able to see something if you do."

Her eyes lighten up, but then dimmed again, "but I really don't have anything important with me...."

"So basically...you have no clues whatsoever with you?" I ask. I felt her nod.

This is gonna be harder than I ever thought.

"I know...sorry for causing trouble for you and Kakeru." She answers. Wait. I never said anything out loud. How'd she just answer me?

Oh well, she must've just said it.

I land in front of the demon house.

"Oh hey, Sachiko, Satoru." Haruhito greeted. I almost didn't believe it was him. He sat still on the couch, looking as if in deep thought for a long while now.

Cerberus rested at his feet.

"I'll be in my room." Sachiko says, then disappeared up the stairs.

Takara's PoV

That day after work, Kakeru said he had business in the demon realm and left early.

He's been busy for these few days all the times. I wonder what mission he has.

When I arrive home, I was probably the first one. Until I spot someone at the couch.

"Haruhito?" I waved a hand in front of him. He didn't even blink. I decided not to interrupt him.

Oh yeah...tomorrow will be Saki's last day...it makes me feel bad. After all, not too long ago, I was in her shoes.

I started to make dinner.

About half an hour later, I heard the front door open. Satoru and Sachiko walked in.

After she went up to her room, I stepped into the living room.

"Eavesdropping, were we?" I yelped when Satoru appeared in front of me all of a sudden.

"I-I was just in the kitchen.... Anyways, Saki looks...not good." I say, "it's probably because her time is almost up, isn't it?"

"Actually it's not." I was surprised when Satoru defended right away. "She isn't trying to avoid her death. She just needs more answers before she can willingly accept it."

"Answers?" I repeat.

"It isn't something I should say." With a small smile, Satoru also went upstairs to his room.

"Eh Takara? When were you home?" I turned to Haruhito's voice. He was leaning against the couch, his arms supporting his weight as he spoke to me.

"What happened to you?" I ask. Haruhito was always energetic and laid-back. This is my first time seeing him so serious and quiet.

He looked away before answering: "I've been thinking about Sachiko lately. Tomorrow's her last day, right?"

I nod.

"It's kind of like how I felt when it was your last day. Y'know, before Kakeru saved you?" he got up and away from the sofa as he spoke, "but just slightly stronger...why? Even if I got attached to her delicious pancakes and all, I shouldn't feel this sad! Takara help meeeeee what should I do?!"

Before I know it, I've got a Haruhito clinging onto my ankle like a lost puppy.

Kakeru's PoV

After my work in the human realm, I head back to the demon realm and into the castle library. Where all the old books and information were stocked.

I've searched for a few days only, at this rate, I won't be surprised if I can't find anything in the end after all.

"Kakeru." A female voice says from beside me. I look to her.

"Akane?"

Her expression was unusually serious as she spoke to me: "If you're trying to find information on Sachiko Sakura, you're not gonna find anything. The former Demon King erased everything possible."

I frowned. Father had a brother, but very few people knew what actually happened to him for him to be mercilessly executed by his own father, which is my grandfather. Not even I know why. Akane is his daughter, and so she's supposed to be my cousin. I had never known what had happened to Akane's father. I never even met him. I only know he's been executed a long time ago.

Akane probably knows the reason. But I never had it to ask her.

"What do you know?" I say impatiently, putting my attention back into the large book I was holding.

"More than you think." She says. I glance at her, she had her arms crossed and she was glaring at me slightly. "I was supposed to be the successor to the throne...." She muttered. But I heard her anyway. What does she mean by that?

She glances at me one more time before walking away.

I roll my eyes, then going back into the book.

But just as Akane had said, after nearly fifty large books, I still have nothing. Maybe it's true that grandfather sealed away everything...? But why would he take extra miles to do that.... It's just a human's profile....

I sighed, coming to realization. I've been looking in the wrong place. If he really didn't want people to know, of course it wouldn't be in the library. Somewhere like...the king's room...would be more appropriate.

Ten minutes later, I am going through my own father's personal belongings. I wonder how Sakura drove me into helping her this far. Maybe subconsciously, I want to know too.

I made sure to leave no trace of myself, drawer after drawer, cabinet after cabinet. Then I used my powers to open a drawer that had a lock on it.

I quickly slipped out of the room and into my own when I found a file.

There were a few photos and some documents.

There was a black-and-white photo of dad and someone else. They looked slightly alike. They both had jet-black hair back then. So I assume that was uncle, father's brother. What was his name again?

Naozomu Kamui.

That's Akane's father, too.

The second was a coloured photo of a woman. She was beautiful and elegant. Her aura reminds me of someone I know. I looked at her curly ginger hair and emerald eyes. I'm pretty sure I've never seen this person ever in my life, but somehow she resemblances someone.

The last photo was of two small children who looked no more than five years old. Probably twins, a boy and a girl were smiling happily at the camera. Flowers were in their hands.

Nothing made sense so far. I picked up the documents.

It was really brief.

'The execution of Naozomu Kamui

Reason: Falling in love with an angel

Extra sins: leaving off springs

The execution of Sayuri Tamika

Reason: Falling in love with a demon

Extra sins: leaving off springs'

[I just made the entire thing up pls don't judge me]

My eyebrows knitted together. Obviously these two are the forbidden lovers. Apparently uncle Naozomu had fallen in love with an angel, named Sayuri.

So that's why nobody ever talked about him. There were absolutely no history in demons and angels in love before. But how come father never told me? Am I not even trust worthy of this piece of information that I am forced now to discover it myself?

Then...those two children...they have to be the 'off springs' right?

I took another good look at that photo. The children looked so happy and in bliss, how could they have felt when their parents got executed just because of a rule in the Heaven? I wonder what happened to these two now. I stare at their faces.

My eyes widen.

'Ginger hair and hazel eyes..?'
