Day 01: Soulmates (ALT Title: Part-time Soulmates, Full-time Problem)

~

When you ask how I've been
I know you mean well, I know you mean well

Who am I dialing tonight? That's a bummer
Thaw out my freezer, burn feelings, for twenty summers

Trafalgar Law was a respected surgeon, way ahead of his years and peers, at the New World Hospital, he wasn't only good at curing people but also took active interest in research and development of new drugs and medical practices to advance the medical sciences.

It was one such night that Law was reading through his research notes that his pager went off, calling him to the ER. Law rolled his eyes and groaned, putting aside everything he had planned to read for the night, knowing exactly what was going to happen.

The hospital was quiet at this time of the night, with most of the patients sleeping and whoever got brought in the ER was, well, not in the state of being vocal or verbal either. The nurses were pacing about doing their jobs as Law headed to the only curtained bed in the ER. Taking a deep breath, Law pulled the curtain aside, knowing his peace would go with it.

"Most of the doctors here are competent, you have to let them help you instead of calling me every time." Law scolded and proceeded to pull his latex gloves on, looking down at his boyfriend of three years, Monkey D. Luffy.

"None of them are you." Luffy shrugged simply and grinned when Law took the board beside the bed and wheeled a stool to sit on.

"What did you do this time?" Law asked eyes scanning over the scarce information on the patient board, no doubt from Luffy refusing to talk to anybody but Law, he was stubborn like that.

Luffy pulled his shirt up and pointed to his profusely bleeding side. "Got stabbed."

"What the-" Law questioned himself on not noticing the blood sooner but sighed when he saw that Luffy was wearing a red shirt. "You're not allowed to wear red shirts anymore."

"Fix me?"

"When have I ever said no?" Law rolled his eyes and got to work. It was always like this with Luffy, he would get hurt picking up other people's fights and protecting them, then he would go to the ER, refuse treatment from anybody who wasn't Law, patiently wait for his boyfriend because Law was the only one allowed to treat him, well apart from Chopper but he went to learn more somewhere else. "You're such a problem." Law said, no bite or hate in his comments when he cut the thread off the five stitches. It was almost endearing, the way he said it.

"We are soulmates, so I am a problem you can't walk away from, nishishi." Luffy laughed.

Oh yes, Law kept forgetting, Luffy and him were soulmates, Law found that out after an year and a half of dating Luffy, accidentally at that too. Luffy had injured his back at that time and Law had to actually strip the boy to get to the wound, and what he found at the base of Luffy's spine, was a sunflower, exactly like Law had on his body, in the exact same location. Luffy had shrugged that information off, saying it didn't matter but he was the one who pulled the 'soulmate' card every time he got in trouble too.

The world is always spinning and I can't keep up

Whoa-oh-oh, faster and faster Can't do it on my own

The bell continued to ring and the door kept getting knocked at. Luffy hurried to the door, careful to not step on his overly excited border collie. If his dog was this excited, the person at the door was probably someone Luffy knew, the urgency wasn't very comforting though.

"I'm coming!" Luffy said and opened the door, facing a Law looking so distraught and out of it that Luffy didn't waste any time pulling him in. Luffy knew the drill when Law appeared at his house like this, shaking and eyes vacant. The younger quickly sat his boyfriend down on the couch and cocooned him in a big blanket. "Down boy." Luffy told his dog because Law didn't like anybody touching him or close to him at such a time, anybody but Luffy. The collie obediently sat down protectively in front of Law, wagging his tail lazily. "Here." Luffy handed Law a mug of hot tea and watched as the drink did its magic.

It was not a frequent thing but it did happen often. During their second year of being together, Law had finally told Luffy about his nightmares and his overall problematic episodes of panic and anxiety. Luffy had eagerly learned the triggers and counters for them, wanting to be ready to help Law whenever he was in trouble. Law had learned to seek Luffy out for his troubles too, but his self-esteem wasn't always allowing of that.

"I'm sorry for being such a problem." Law hiccupped randomly, his tea long gone.

"Idiot." Luffy puffed his cheeks and hugged Law with the blankets. "We're boyfriends, so you're allowed to be a problem."

"I thought we were soulmates?" Law laughed a little despite himself, Luffy looked so adorable.

"We were boyfriends before that Torao."

"Guess we were."

"I swear to fucking..." Law groaned stepping inside the police station and sought out Officer Smoker. The doctor avoided looking around at the numerous other officers giving Law tired looks knowing exactly what he was there for.

"Dr. Trafalgar." Smoker greeted around his cigars and shook his head. "I should arrange him a couch and TV here seeing how much I have to apprehend him."

"What did he do this time?" Law asked already dreading the answer.

"He knocked the president's son and his guards unconscious." Smoker said and slid the board with the release forms for Law to sign.

"There's more to it, isn't it? I don't believe Luffy would do that without purpose." Law narrowed his eyes and smirked at the obvious dismay clouding Smoker's face at having to say the entire truth.

"The boy and the guards were harassing a woman."

"My husband should be awarded a medal, not put behind bars." Law signed the form and handed it back to Smoker.

"We all know the world doesn't work that way."

"Time to make changes then, no? Or are you here to just keep that seat warm?" Law taunted and followed the other officer to the cell Luffy was being kept in. The usually hyperactive young man was sleeping like he hadn't slept in weeks.

When the officer opened the cell, Law went inside and shook Luffy a little. The younger peeked through his eyelids and a dopey smile took over his face. "Toraoooo~"

"Are you going to get up or do I have to carry you?" Law's cheeks turned red when Luffy extended his arms upwards, wanting to be carried, in public. "Fine, you troublemaker." Law crouched down and Luffy got on his back, hooking his arms around his husband's neck.

"I heard you guys are soulmates, keep a better eye on him." Smoker said walking Law till the car and opening the door for him so the doctor could sit Luffy inside.

"Only part-time soulmates, officer." Law corrected.

"Still sounds like a full-time problem to me." Smoker bid the men a goodbye, hoping he wouldn't see them both for the nineteenth time that month.

Part-time soulmates, that was the condition the boys put for each other when they found out they were soulmates. They both didn't like the concept of soulmates to begin with, the idea seemed too confining for their larger than life personalities.

Law liked his space and he was irritable and moody when he didn't get enough alone-time. Law also knew that he would never have Luffy's entire love and affection to himself, especially when meat was involved and he knew that it wouldn't be right to the world to keep Luffy all to himself. Even after getting married, it came as a shock to all their friends that the men weren't sharing one room, they were sharing a house and had their separate rooms.

Luffy liked his adventures and his misadventures alike and he didn't want to get tied down by the idea of soulmates or boyfriends or even husbands so he was on board with being part-time as soon as Law suggested it. He only reprimanded Law on the bad actions that reaped bad consequences as Law did for him.

Both Luffy and Law couldn't give up the entirety of themselves to the other so they decided on being part-time soulmates but they never ignored the other when there was trouble or some problem.

Part-time soul-mate, full-time problem

I think everyone at this point knows I love Fall Out Boy so when Hold Me Like a Grudge came out, I was slack-jawed at how much it fit the boys (contrary to the actual meaning of the song) but I made the meaning for LawLu <3

Anyway!
