6. Wifi Problems
I do my best to keep quiet as I sit atop a cleared metal workbench-like table. I listen semi-intently to the Avengers talk among themselves -- I mean argue among themselves. The only reason I'm here is that apparently after the whole Ultron (as I learned that's what the murderbots were) situation and saving Dr. Cho from becoming roasted, Ultron fried the Avengers Tower. So that meant whatever prison is 'supposed' to keep me in a cell is currently down. Therefore, the Avengers figured they could keep a better eye on me with the whole team watching. I find it all to be a bit dramatic. After all, it's not like I have anywhere to go. I mean I did just come back after I could have fled.
However, I need to keep in mind they know nothing about me. They brought me into their home and suddenly everything goes to crap. Not to mention I obviously have some sort of enhancement. So their distrust is not without cause.
Either way, I keep my mouth shut and absentmindedly pick at my nails while I listen. Dr. Banner is the one that begins the conversation. "All our work is gone. Ultron cleared out. He used the Internet as an escape hatch."
"Smart robot. Maybe I should have followed his lead and left as well." I say quietly to myself. It only earns me a scowl from a dark-haired SHIELD agent I heard one of the Avengers refer to as 'Agent Hill.' She sits on a stool plucking glass from the bottom of her foot with tweezers. In face of her hostility, my eyes widen a fraction and I hold up my hands as if to say 'okay, okay, I'll shut up now.'
Not that I probably will.
Captain Rogers quietly whispers 'Ultron' to himself while shaking his head, unhappy with the whole situation. I mean I would be too if a robot smashed my hella rad party with my friends, tried to kill a doctor from a foreign country, stole an Asgardian weapon that had belonged to a brooding Asgardian who could crush your skull with his bicep alone, and then smash through a window with your prisoner.
Not to mention the wifi.
Why did it have to be the wifi? Did Ultron have to take out the wifi on the way out? That savage. Now how are we supposed to look at cats doing stupid stuff? Man, nothing is sacred with this Ultron character.
Next up to bat when it comes to speaking is the well-known Romanoff, after she turns around and crosses her arms. The infamous assassin leans against a wall with a window into another portion of the lab while she speaks. "He's been in everything. Files, surveillance... He probably knows more about us than we know about each other." Barton seems to become a bit on edge upon this revelation. He takes a deep breath and looks around the room uncomfortably. It's almost like there is something he doesn't want anybody to know about, even his closest friends.
"He's in your files, he's in the internet. What if he decides to access something a little more exciting?" Another man, one whom I'm not too familiar with, known as 'War Machine' says. The side of my lips curls upwards while I let out a soft snort.
"Like Tony's browser history?" I pipe up, my head lifted as I watch him cross the diagonal of the room to stand close to Agent Hill...who adorns another soul-crushing scowl. I simply roll my eyes and place my hands flat on the cool surface of the table and lean back.
This lady is way too uptight.
Agent Hill looks past the dark-skinned man as if thinking for a split second, and then quietly announces 'nuclear codes.' The guy, James Rhodes I believe, quietly whispers 'nuclear codes' right after Agent Hill with a distressed tone. I don't know man. I think I'm more upset about the wifi than nuclear codes. But that's just me. "Look, we need to make some calls, assuming we still can." James says while looking over at Stark, who has since been staring at a pile of scrap that used to be one of Ultron's minions. He then peers around the room to all the others. The Black Widow looks at him.
"Nukes? He said he wanted us dead." Natasha says.
Yeah, that's why he crashed the wifi.
But on another note, if he did want them dead, why weren't they? I'm sure he had the means. "He didn't say 'dead,' he said 'extinct.'" The Captain corrects. He looks up from a table covered in parts, over to me, and then the rest of the group. I shrug my shoulders at him and then turn my attention back to Hawkguy.
"He also said he killed somebody." Clint looks mildly worried as he shifts his gaze down to where Maria is still picking glass from her foot. She looks up at him with confusion.
"There wasn't anybody else in the building. Except her," she takes a second to point at me before continuing, "but she's still here." She doesn't even try to hide the venom in her tone as she finishes out her sentence. I simply roll my eyes. To think, she's Nick's right hand.
"Gee thanks." I sarcastically say in response to her final comment, staring the brunette down. "It's not like I didn't try to keep your intelligent doctor friend safe or anything. Yeah, you're welcome." I spit with my own crippling spite in the agent's direction. Dr. Cho sends me a small appreciative smile, remembering me giving her an out when cornered by the crazed chunk of metal. In return, I let out a soft sigh and send her a small smile back. I do my best to bite back the rest of my anger. Steve now stands next to me, his arms crossed over his chest. He seems to be giving me side glances every so often. I guess he's still unsure about me. Even after he got Thor and Tony off my back when they had me up against the wall earlier. I send him an unsure grin as I shift my weight on the table.
"Yes, there was." A solemn Tony speaks up while holding some sort of transparent device. He walks away from his dismantled creation and holds it up before flicking it in the air lightly. This brings some sort of holographic, orange mess up in the center of the lab. I tilt my head at it as Dr. Banner turns around to inspect it. Everybody else also turns their attention to it, faces uncertain and unsettled. Bruce walks up to it with his arms slightly out at his sides. He almost looks like a kicked puppy.
"What?" He asks, voice low. Then he looks over to Tony questioningly. Tony gives him this look that says 'I'm sorry.' The doctor then looks back down. "This is insane."
"Jarvis was the first line of defense." I whip my head to look at Rogers, who still has his arms crossed. The patriot looks down at the ground. What peaks my interest the most is the name. Jarvis. Just like when I was down in the containment area. Jarvis was the AI, and that orange blob in the middle of the room is it. Er, him? Whatever. I wrinkle my nose.
"So I'm basically looking at a dead body..." I muse out loud. Nobody else seems amused with my thought and Steve sends me a hard look. I simply keep my eyes on it and try to wrap my head around the whole situation.
"He would have shut Ultron down. It makes sense." Steve continues. Then my brows furrow together. How was an AI supposed to stop Ultron if Ultron was a robot?
Wait. Ultron wasn't a robot, Ultron was another AI. He just took over the suits...
So that's how Ultron 'escaped' through the internet.
Tony turns and looks at me at that moment as if I were stupid. My eyes widen as everybody else practically does the same. Whoops. I guess my thoughts were not as internal as I thought. I'm still working on keeping those to myself, I guess. I look away from Stark's piercing glare and rub the back of my neck. Steve simply smiles as he looks down at me. I guess I'm not the only one who has problems with wrapping my mind around this. I send Steve an embarrassed half-smile before lifting my head again to watch the others continue to interact. "No. Ultron could have assimilated Jarvis. This isn't strategy. This is...rage." I lift my head as heavy boots enter the lab after Banner finishes speaking. I turn to see an angry Thor. How ironic, Banner talking about rage and a thunderous-looking Thor storms in. I mentally giggle to myself.
Wow, I'm so funny.
I flinch as Tony turns around only to be grabbed by the throat by Thor, who continues walking forward. This causes the billionaire to walk backward until the Asgardian lifts him into the air. My eyes widen as I debate whether to let them duke it out or to help. I mean I'm leaning more toward letting them duke it out because it might get good. Of course Banner doesn't think so as he repeatedly says 'woah.' As if that's gonna get Thor to stop... "It's going around." Hawkeye says as he tensely watches the scene unfold. Dr. Cho quickly moves from where she's standing and Nat stands up a little straighter. The assassin looks ready to hop in when needed, unlike me.
"Come on, use your words, buddy." Tony says, his voice weak.
"I have more than enough words to describe you, Stark." Thor replies, too calmly for my taste, as Tony grunts.
"Thor," Steve says in his authoritative voice, his arms dropping to his sides as he strides towards the two of them with even steps. I almost feel uncomfortable when Steve leaves my side because he's the only one who has even remotely defended me. "The Legionnaire." Thor then returns the billionaire to the floor, looking none too happy he didn't get to have his way with Stark.
"The trail went cold about 100 miles out, but it's headed north." He says and continues to glare Tony down, only turning to Cap at the end of the sentence. Then he turns back to Tony and glares at him. "And it has the scepter." There's a cold malice in his voice as he speaks. Once again he turns back to Steve. "Now we have to retrieve it. Again." The demi-god seems none too happy. Natasha then speaks up, causing the Asgardian's gaze to turn towards her.
"Genie's out of that bottle." She looks away and nods her head toward Rogers. "Clear and present is Ultron." My body turns as I look at Helen Cho, who stands behind me at another table, looking at the destroyed robot.
"I don't understand." I lift my brow at her. "You built this program." She directs her words to Tony. He starts walking in her direction, only to stop by a computer monitor. "Why is it trying to kill us?" She finishes and awaits an answer like the rest of us. That's when Tony starts giggling. Now everybody is looking at him. I simply roll my eyes and wait for someone to smack him upside the head. Bruce shakes his head, trying to get him to stop because this is no time to laugh.
"You think this is funny?" Thor demands with a false smile on his lips.
"No." Tony turns around. He's almost like a kid who's just been caught by his mother with his hand in the cookie jar. "It's probably not, right?" He looks to everybody else for confirmation. I place my palm against my forehead before muttering swears under my breath. Steve looks absolutely done with Tony's crap. Maria looks confused as to why he's asking if this isn't funny because nothing is funny when she's around. Helen tilts her head at him like she doesn't believe what he's just said. "This is very terrible. It is so..." He breaks a moment to chuckle. "It is so...it is. It is so terrible."
No, really, Sherlock?
"This could have been avoided if you hadn't played with something you don't understand." Thor reprises him, only for Tony to instantly pick up the argument.
"No. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It is funny." I roll my eyes. I almost lose my patience. I am seriously about to smack him. Or use my abilities to throw something across the room and hope it hits him. "It's a hoot that you don't understand why we need this." Tony says and walks straight up to Thor.
"Tony, maybe this is not the best time..." Bruce says in a small voice, trying to defuse the tension in the air.
"Really? That's it?" Tony suddenly turns and looks at Bruce with his face twisted up as if to say 'I can't believe you.' "You just roll over, show your belly every time somebody snarls?" He questions the doctor.
"Only when I've created a murder bot." Bruce says with a mix of sarcasm and seriousness in his tone. I grin. After this, I tune the fight out. This team seems to have an endless circle of arguments. It's tiresome to keep up with all of it. My feet swing slowly from where I'm elevated on the table. Obviously, Bruce is either trying to keep this from the group or he doesn't want this fight to ensue. It's probably a mix of both.
I look up at Steve as he approaches Tony, only for the playboy to back up very suddenly and go on to remind everybody about the attack on NYC a few years ago. Again, I roll my eyes. His ego is bigger than one of those flying worms from space. It's then that Tony gives a quick little speech about justice and bad guys before asking the others how they plan on tackling it. Steve gives him a hard look. "Together." The Captain declares. Not that I'd be helping, oh no, I'll be leaving ASAP.
"We'll lose." Tony says.
Wow Stark, way to ruin the moment.
"Then we'll do that together too." Steve says and stares him down. I tilt my head as Steve looks back at me, a now encouraging smile on his face. My eyes grow wider at the inferred prospect.
"Wait what." I lift my finger and shake my head. "Oh, no. No no no. I am...I am not getting embroiled in this. I am not a hero. I'm a college drop out with 2 years of a tech degree under my belt and a fractured history." I inform the group anxiously.
"Welcome to the club." Clint grins.
"That's why you're here though isn't it? Why you sought us out, why you were in Sokovia? Because you wanted to see what being a hero was all about?" Steve asks me, righteousness already seeping into his voice. I gape like a fish out of water I try to come up with an excuse -- any excuse -- as to why I can't help them. "Well, this is your chance. Prove yourself."
"I can't believe I'm getting involved in all this." I grumble as I look at Steve's outstretched hand apprehensively. But this is what I wanted. I wanted a chance to prove myself helpful. I want to tackle evil and be a fighting force against things regular people can't fight themselves. Or at least, that's what I think I want. "Alright, whatever. Fine, I'll help." I huff and take the outstretched hand as I slide off the metal workbench.
