14. Airborne

A chilled metal hand of my captor roughly shoves me forward when I hesitate to enter the building currently being inhabited by Ultron. I scowl at the robot and plant my feet, being the petty and defiant person I am. It lets out an angered mechanical noise as the blue lighting on its face turns to a deep scarlet. My scowl only deepens in response until it lifts one of its hands, repulsor charging menacingly at me. Having already had two run-ins with the repulsor blasts, I begrudgingly trudge forward. It harshly grabs my shoulder, causing me to fold into the pressure and attempt to pull away. "Ow ow ow ow, okay, ow. Can you not?" I grit my teeth as the machine keeps its hold on my shoulder and begins to usher me into the building where Ultron's waiting. "Bro, you are fugly. Like, really, really fugly." I declare, filterless, once standing in front of Stark's rebellious creation.

"It's no wonder they seem to like you so much." Ultron calmly states. I lift a brow at him, my neck craning so I can look at his face. "You're just as childish as they are." I disregard his statement, secure with where I stand with the Avengers at the moment.

"Dude, your face looks like one of Tony's suits had sex with a stereo and got the crappy genes." My nose wrinkles in disgust. I flinch when Ultron moves his arm, shielding my face with my free arm before slowly lowering it when I hear him chuckle.

"For someone with a sharp tongue, you're very jumpy." He observes.

"Yeah well for a psycho, Loki was hella better than you." Ultron seems angered by this as his mouth turns downward in a disapproving frown.

"I did not bring you here for you to insult me." Ultron states.

"Yeah well I didn't wanna be here, but here I am, insulting your ugly metal face. What did you expect?" I snarkily reply.

"There's a reason you're here." The giant robot says vaguely.

"Uh huh?" I lift an unamused brow.

"The Avengers. You're not part of their team. You're...expendable to them." I frown as my eyebrows crease together. "Have they even shown an ounce of concern for you during any of this?" Ultron questions. The corners of my lips twitch as I try to come back with a snappy remark, but am unable to find one. "Exactly. You're their tool, here to do the dirty work for them. Here to try and take me down, because they know they can't." He moves away from me now and begins to walk toward the center of the building where there's a metal contraption protruding from the ground. "But this," he points to the machine as he stands by it. "this can set you free. Nobody will ever be able to take advantage of you again." My eyes flick from Ultron's face to the machine. I hesitantly take a step forward, then another, and another, until I'm standing next to the metal man.

"How?" I ask, voice low and serious.

"Turn against them." He spits the word 'them' with so much venom it's not hard to understand that he's talking about the Avengers.

"And if I were to stupidly decided to refuse?" I curiously ask.

"Well, then, I'm afraid I'd have to do away with you." Ultron says frankly. I nod my head slowly, pondering. "So, do we have an accord?" The metal robot then questions. I tenderly reach out to touch the whirring and clinking machine. Join the psycho murder robot who plans to destroy the world or save it? Before my hand comes into contact with Ultron's death machine, I let out an exceptionally strong blast from my palm, draining at least a quarter of my energy reserve in a hope that it'll destroy it. However, the only thing that happens is a total energy rebound. I find myself being thrown back until I collide with the wall of the church. A ringing sound resounds throughout the area, but it's not coming from my ears. It's coming from the metal itself. That's when it dawns on me. That contraption isn't made out of just ordinary materials. It's made out of stolen vibranium, which means I can't light it up.

The rebound blast didn't just knock me backward, but it forced Ultron back a few feet also. Unlike me, he managed to just slide across the ground. Once he regains his balance his face turns toward me, eyes burning with hatred. "I had hoped you wouldn't do that." He marches toward me menacingly and lifts me from the ground with a hold around my neck. My feet dangle below me as I sputter and claw in vain at Ultron's hand. His entire hand completely envelops my throat and is able to wrap fully around it. It's then the comm in my ear sparks to life.

"We're all clear here." I hear Clint's voice, albeit being a little fuzzy.

"We are not clear! We are very not clear!" I hear Steve respond, voice strained as I hear what I assume is his shield hitting other robots.

"All right, coming to ya." Clint responds evenly. "Keep up old man!" I hear in the background, followed by a swoosh. "Nobody would know." I hear Barton draw an arrow. "Nobody." There's a brief pause. "The last I saw him, an Ultron was sitting on him! Yeah, he'll be missed that quick little bastard. I miss him already." I begin to chuckle even though it's forced and breathless. Ultron's face grows even more angered. His grip tightens suddenly and my chuckling stops as I claw at his hand again with my feet kicking out at him.

"What did they say?" Ultron says, giving me a shake as small black dots begin to obscure my vision. "What did they say!" He shouts louder in response to my silence.

"They're..." I gasp as his grip loosens just enough for me to suck a small amount of air into my lungs, causing the small black dots to disperse. "They're going to kick your ass." I smirk at him, my eyes gleaming with a sadistic hatred. Our eyes are locked on one another until he turns away from me and looks to the area of a distant explosion.

"Watch her." Ultron commands the bot that had brought me here as he throws me back against the wall I had hit previously. I groan when my back comes in contact with it as I clutch my abdomen. Tiredly, I lean my head back. As for the robot sentenced to watch me, it moves closer, ready to fire should I move to escape. I begin to chuckle, although painfully, making the robot watching me tilt it's head before it's blaster starts firing up. I fall silent but a smile is still fighting to be seen on my face at Clint's words. The smile falls away as I let out a shriek as one of the pillars is smashed by Thor as he crash-lands here. Thor rolls over and then gets to his feet. Ultron lands with a thud in the middle of the building after Thor, descending from a hole in the roof. My eyes widen as I push my back further against the wall. Stark's crazy creation uses what I can only assume is a magnetic pull to lift a part of the fallen pillar. I weakly smile at Thor and wiggle my fingers in a half-hearted wave.

"Hey, Thor." I greet. "Fancy meeting you here."

"Iris!" He exclaims with a relieved tone before Ultron throws the broken section of pillar into him. It hardly makes a dent against a demi-god, only knocking him back a few steps as it shatters against him. Ultron advances, punching Thor across the face again and again. My mouth drops as the Asgardian drops his hammer and Ultron continues to beat on him, punching him senseless until he's on his knees. Meanwhile, I can hear explosions and conversations going over the comms.

"Fury you son of a bitch." Steve says, drawing my full attention to his conversation at hand.

Is Fury here?

"Oooh, you kiss your mother with that mouth?" He responds back. My eyebrows knit together. How'd he get on the comms? You know what? It's best not to question Fury. I don't even care. I'm just glad he's here.

"You think you're saving anyone?" Ultron delivers an especially heavy blow, disorientating Thor before reaching forward and grabbing him by the throat. "I turn that key and drop this rock a little early and it's still billions dead. And even you can't stop that." Ultron talks down to where Thor's on his knees. Ultron stands holding his free arm back, fist clenched, ready to punch the Asgardian again. My eyes widen suddenly as the robot that was here to make sure I didn't leave is suddenly ripped apart. But it's unusual. It doesn't make any noise as it happens. I turn my head and see Vision using the Mind Stone to tear it apart before putting a finger to his lips to shush me before I can thank him. I draw up my legs and push myself up with my back against the wall until I'm standing.

"I am Thor, son of Odin, and as long as there is life in my breast...I am...running out of things to say. Are you ready?" At the last part of his small little speech, he turns his eyes away from looking up at Ultron to where Vision is floating in front of me. That's when Ultron drops his raised arm and turns to look where Vision and I are standing. Vision is much closer though and holding Thor's hammer. Once Ultron is facing us, Vision swings and knocks Ultron through two wooden doors and out of the church. That's when Thor holds out his hand and his trusty hammer flies from Vision to himself. We all turn and look at where Ultron was sent through the wooden doors.

"It's terribly well-balanced." Vision says, looking over at Thor now.

"Well, if there's too much weight, you lose power on the swing, so..." He demonstrates swinging his hammer, smiling as he does so. He then turns to face me as I hesitantly walk over to the pair. "We've got Iris," Thor says immediately, smiling. "Ultron had her in the church."

"Thor, that core. It's the rest of the vibranium. There's nothing I can do to blow it to high heavens." I rub my hands together nervously. He nods and an understanding smile. Vision turns to look at the core before looking at me. We share a brief smile. "That didn't stop me from trying though." This causes Vision to give a small chuckle before patting my shoulder. I don't care what Ultron thinks, but I know this team doesn't see me as an expendable tool.

"Thor I've got a plan." Tony says over comms.

"We're out of time," Thor says back. "They're coming for the core." There's a pause on Tony's side.

"Avengers, time to work for a living." Tony says finally. I look over at Vision.

"What does he think we've been doing?" I ask with a scrunched face. Vision kindly smiles at me and shrugs. That's when a few stray robots begin closing in on the church. We know they're here for the core. At the same moment, Stark comes from the ceiling and lands next to the core on Vision's opposite side. A robot jumps at Vision and the android grabs it without a second thought, throwing it to the side. More robots continue to push their way in. I begin creating energy barriers in strategic locations to suck the power from robot minions as they run into them, although careful not to absorb their energy. Meanwhile, I cause two robots who get too close to the core to crumble into red-hot heaps of metal. Next thing I know, Pietro zips in and starts throwing robots around. "Nice of you to join us." I say over the noise of Ultron's bodies being torn apart.

"Nice of you not to be dead." He says back.

"Oh, well you know. The Cap did say walk it off." I smirk and continue to throw small spheres of crude energy at robots, which overload some and make others explode. In the midst of my concentration, I forget about my previous struggle to wield energy and find it to be simple as long as I remain on task. I step sideways when Steve comes crashing in, smashing a robot with his shield before turning and decapitating another. That seems to take care of the first wave of robots. At the same time, Hawkeye and Wanda walk into the church, side by side. Pietro sees his sister and is standing in front of her in an instant.

"You good?" He asks, concerned.

"Yeah, yeah." She sounds out of breath, but other than that, she seems fine. Meanwhile, Stark's taken place standing over the core, his blasters ready.

"Romanoff?" He asks and it comes over comms. "You and Banner better not be playing 'hide the zucchini.'" I wrinkle my nose in disgust while my other more unpolished side wants to laugh.

"Relax, shellhead. Not all of us can fly." I smile to myself and tear a robot in half at its midsection as it comes into the building. My head shoots up as I see a yellow truck with a plow on its front suddenly smash into a knocked over chain link fence. Natasha jumps out of it to my relief. She jogs into the building and takes a place next to Stark and Barton. "What's the drill?"

"This is the drill." Tony points to the core in the middle of our circle. "If Ultron gets a hand on the core, we lose." I turn my head to see Hulk land on two robots, crushing them.

Well, he came out of nowhere fast.

Behind the Hulk, Ultron is hovering, causing the whole team to turn and look at him. "Is that the best you can do?" Thor shouts at him, throwing his arms out at his sides like a cocky teenager. I stand by Wanda, Pietro standing behind the both of us, and Vision standing to my left. In front of us to the right is the Hulk and Steve, and to their left are Tony and Barton, with Thor standing in front of all of us. Ultron holds up a hand and his entire robot army comes crawling until there's a hoard of them standing in front of us with a few hovering in the air also.

"You had to ask." Steve says, looking disapprovingly at Thor.

"This is the best I can do. This is exactly what I wanted. All of you, against all of me. How could you possibly hope to stop me?" Ultron declares.

"Well, like the old man said...together." Tony says in response to Ultron. That's when Hulk lets out a startling roar, causing me to jump.

"Can he not..." I whisper quietly to myself but then turn my attention back just in time to see that Hulk's roar causes the army of metal to begin their charge towards us. All at once they begin rushing through all openings to the building. This causes the team to pull inward, surrounding the core in a perfect circle. Except for Vision, who's floating above us taking out the flying minions, and Pietro who's zipping around tearing these ugly machines to pieces.

Tony's firing his repulsors, Steve uses his shield in addition to hand-to-hand combat, Thor is using his hammer to beat them to pieces, Hawkeye is firing arrows, Natasha utilizes her firearms and widow bites if a robot gets too close, Hulk is ripping them apart, Vision is using the Mind Stone and his bare hands to scrap them, and Wanda and I are using energy to dismantle them. Together we keep them away from the core and watch each other's backs while doing so.

The fight ensues. The team continues to rip away at the hoard of robots that fail to cease pouring into the small circular building. At one point, Wanda and I at one point are back-to-back dismantling our enemies before Stark flies over us, taking down one of the robots that flies over our heads. Amusingly, Hulk even manages to bite one of Ultron's minion's head off. Had I not been engaged in a fist fight with one of the metal clankers, I would have laughed at the sight.

This battle continues on for only about two minutes, but it feels like it's been ongoing for hours. Once the tide is turned against Ultron and we're beginning to win, the devil himself flies into the chapel over our heads and grabs Vision by the shoulders. The two became engrossed in their own fistfight above the rest of the team while we continue dismantling Ultron's remaining evil henchmen. I pause and look up to see Ultron throw Vision into a wall, only for Vision to use the Mind Stone against him. The beam coming from the gem is so powerful that it forces Ultron clean out of the church. This gets Tony and Thor's attention. They both leave the church to help Vision. It isn't a problem that they leave, seeing as we now held the upper hand and are drawing to a close on the metal army. As the army becomes even thinner, Hulk leaves the building as well. Through one of the openings in the church, I can see him punch Ultron clean into the sky. It's not until the bots see their commander getting knocked out of the park do they begin to run away from the core. Hulk chases down the ones who don't try to fly off this rock.

"They're trying to leave the city." Thor states.

"We can't let them, not even one. Rhodey." Tony replies, before calling out to the War Machine.

"I'm on it." He says. "Oh no, I didn't say you could leave. War Machine coming at you! Right..." His sentence stops suddenly. "Okay, what?" I can only laugh. From where I stand at one of the entrances to the church, I see Vision intercept some of the bots Rhodey was after. Because he isn't exactly a full-time Avenger, Rhodes didn't happen to be there when Vision was created. I guess nobody decided to fill him in after the fact either. So, his confusion is justified.

"We gotta move out. Even I can tell the air is getting thin." I turn around and see Cap talking to the rest of us, the ones who are still in the building. I retreat from where I'm standing watching robots being torn from the sky and walk over to the core. "You guys get to the boats. I'll sweep for stragglers. Be right behind you."

"What about the core?" Barton asks, casting a look over at it.

"I'll protect it," Wanda speaks up, causing Clint, Pietro, and me to all look at her. "It's my job." She sends a weak smile to Hawkeye.

Guess I missed something when Ultron decided to kidnap me.

"Nat, this way." Clint gives Wanda a nod before leaving with Natasha. Cap follows them out of the building. I, on the other hand, hesitate and stay back to talk with Wanda a second. I'm about to speak when Pietro comes in out of nowhere.

"Get the people on the boats, both of you." Wanda commands and casts us both smiles.

"I'm not leaving without you." Pietro says and looks up at his sister defiantly.

"I can handle this." She fires back, looking around the building for a second. Good thing she did, because in comes a robot intent on getting to the core. She dismantles it quickly with her energy, proving her point. Pietro watches and gives a small nod. "Come back for me when everyone else is off. Not before." The female Maximoff twin says authoritatively. "You understand?"

"You know, I'm 12 minutes older than you." Speedy comments, a broad smile on his face. This causes his sister to chuckle.

"Go," Wanda says, almost laughing. I smile and take a step closer to her with intentions to stay here as well. "Iris, you too." I fake pout, sad she doesn't want my help. "You will be more helpful in getting the people to safety."

"Yeah yeah, unless I set them on fire." We both chuckle and I walk up to her and pull her into a hug, something she isn't expecting. We've only been friends for about a day, but I can already feel a strong connection to the female Maximoff. Slowly, she returns the hug with a smile on her face. I pull back and begin walking backward, pointing a finger at her. "After this, you, me, and Pietro are going out to get dinner, yeah? I want to be those best friends who know everything about each other, hear?"

"I hear. Now go." We share a laugh as I walk over to Pietro.

"Mind giving me a lift?" I request.

"I could give you more than a lift." I roll my eyes at him, failing to stifle a smile, and put an arm around his shoulders.

"Don't push your luck, we're already going to dinner." He smirks and then bends down and hoists me into his arms bridal style before we're rushing through the abandoned city.
