*Mind Power*
*Mind Power*
"What if I hurt you?"
"You won't! I trust you, 'kay? Now concentrate! What did you do before?"
I sighed in frustration. "I told you, I don't know! It was a third person perspective," I protested, glaring at the floor. This was stupid. I could end up hurting someone. That's if I even did have telepathic powers.
"Just bloody concentrate!" I hated seeing him like this, getting impatient.
"Fine!" I threw up my hands and sighed. I groaned and set my feet firm on the ground, then I allowed my gaze to pierce Newt's, almost trying to penetrate the barrier concealing his thoughts. I hadn't a clue what I was doing, but at least I was trying.
I sifted through my own mind, trying to find memories or clues, or even a little source of power.
But nothing.
I was about to give up, throw my hands up in frustration, when I grasped something. A tiny surge of power, ebbing slowly in my mind. Without hesitation, I grasped it and focused on Newt's head.
A tingle ran through my temple.
My eyes blinked rapidly.
Then Newt's impassive features turned to those of confusion... and then pain. He suddenly yelled, his knees buckling. His hand went up to his head and began clutching his temples.
No! What had I done? How do I stop it?! I released the power from my grasp and rushed over to Newt, his face pale.
His chest heaved with shallow breaths, and he was groaning. At least he was alive. I pulled him onto my lap and cradled his head close to mine.
"I'm so sorry, Newt! I'm so, so sorry," I murmured into his hair.
He suddenly gasped and spluttered and jolted up. Colour returned to his cheeks. I guess the effects wore off quickly.
"Are you okay?!" She breathed, jaw hanging.
He nodded, confusion racing through his features. "What the bloody hell just happened!?"
She stared at him solemnly. "It worked. I have these so called mind powers... telepathic powers..."
I couldn't believe what I had just done! What if I'd killed him? Newt was the only one who I could trust around here. He made me feel safe. I couldn't loose him.
"Oh," he muttered, trying to grip what had happened. "It was weird. It felt like someone was probing around my mind. Then there was... pain. Just awful pain." He glanced at me. "Did you... see anything?"
I studied him for a moment and shook my head. "You got things you don't want me to know about in there?"
"I got things even I don't want to know about in there," he murmured, pushing himself off the ground.
Well that sounded ominous. "So what now? I'm some sorta freak, right? They gonna kill me?"
Newt gritted his teeth. "I'm gonna talk to them."
"No!" I protested, but he cut me off.
"Not about WICKED or anything. I'm gonna persuade them to let you be one of the Gladers. That'll mean you gotta work, though. Like the others."
I nodded furiously. I could do that, happily. No objections. It was a hell of a lot better than being locked up.
"'Kay. But you gotta stay in the Slammer for now," he said sadly. "I'll be back soon. Try not miss me too much." Then with a wink, he was gone. The lock rattled noisily against the door. Then silence.
I sighed and slumped down against the wall.
I really was a freak.
And a dangerous freak at that.
