*Can't Sleep?*

*Can't Sleep?*

(Five Days Later)

I'd been here a week. Already. And I wasn't getting treated any better. I'd completely avoided Gally, and he seemed to have avoided me too. Nobody had brought up the incident since it had happened, but it was still lingering on the edge of my thoughts. As was the chance of another accident occurring.

Minho had completely recovered, and I'd completed my trial at each job - including running. It had definitely been my favourite job - although hard work, it was what I seemed to be good at. Even Minho had praised me on my ability to keep a decent pace, and comply with the rules of running.

I really hoped that was the job chosen for me in the gathering the next evening. But now, I was trying to sleep. Outside. In a scratchy sleeping bag. Surrounded by snoring guys.

I had chosen a spot near the edge of the Glade, near Newt. But something was keeping me awake. I sighed and drew my knees closer to my chin, letting my hair cascade over my shoulders.

"Can't sleep?"

My head jerked up at the sudden voice, I searched through the gloom for the figure who had spoken. Of course, it was Newt.

"Not really," I muttered as he crouched down next to me, balancing on his toes. I gently shoved his side and giggled as he toppled over with a yelp.

"Hey, not bloody funny," he growled, though his eyes sparkled with laughter.

I grinned at the ground as he shuffled closer to me. A cool breeze raked through the glade, making goosebumps prickle my skin. I tugged my sleeping bag round my shoulders, almost like a blanket. Newt noticed too and suddenly wrapped his arm around me.

"What are you doing?" I whispered as my head tilted into his shoulder.

"Keeping you warm."

I nodded, my cheek brushing against his neck. He was so sweet.

"What job d'you think I'm going to get?"

Newt stayed silent for a while, before answering in a hushed voice. "I think you'll be a runner. Minho seems pretty intent on giving you that job."

My shoulders suddenly became considerably lighter, as if a great weight had been pressing down on me, but now it had been removed. I was profoundly relieved.

"Do you agree?"

"I don't know. It's a dangerous job."

"You're worried about me?" I smirked, and he shifted uncomfortably.

"Well, yeah," he mumbled awkwardly, and I raised my head to stare into his eyes. He was sincere.

His face was undoubtedly close to mine, and I wondered what would happen if I leant forward the tiniest bit more... but I didn't have to wait to find out, for he had already closed the distance between us. His lip was inches from mine, and I slowly pushed forward, pressing my lips against his. The kiss was soft and sweet, and didn't last long, but the touch of his lips lingered for a while longer on my own.

He pulled away, blushing slightly, and I laughed at his embarrassment.

"I really like you, Rowan," he murmured, his voice barely audible.

I grinned and leaned back against his shoulder. "I really like you, too, Newt."
