chapter one: [literal new girl]
"Only when we lose ourselves, have we truly lost everything."
Indigo's POV
My eyes flutter open as I wake up, squinting as I try to see what's around me. It's too dark to tell, but I think I see trees. Although, why would I be waking up outside?
I sit up, realizing I was sitting up from asphalt. I look down and recognize the double yellow lines that ran under me. Why am I waking up in the middle of the road?
My body is extremely exhausted, making it a chore to even keep myself sitting up. I groan as I try to move out of the road, my legs feeling like weights. Using my hands, I try to crawl off but nothing seems to be helping. I'm not rushed about it, until I spot headlights in my peripheral vision.
Oh, shit.
Now, I'm frantically pulling my body out of the road, grunting each time my hands slam down to continue pushing. But the lights get closer, lighting the way for, what I notice to be, a red S.U.V.
I shut my eyes closed, bracing myself for impact. This was it. This is how I go. Immobile in the middle of the road, hit by a family car.
"Hey!" I heard a shout, before a body slammed into mine. We rolled off the road, barely missing the car as it sped past our previous spot. I groaned as the body on top of me rolled off, sitting up on their own.
"What- the hell- were you doing in the middle of the road?" I heard a guy's voice, his heavy breathing very evident.
I looked back to where I woke up, shaking my head with my eyes wide.
"I-I don't know..." I breathed out, sighing as I shut my eyes.
"You don't know?" He exclaimed, standing up as he held his side, almost squeezing his eyes shut in pain.
"No, I just- woke up." I shrugged, beginning to become annoyed with my own answers. I don't know. What did I know? It seemed the more I racked my brain for thoughts, memories- nothing was coming up. Why couldn't I remember?
"Well-" The boy sighed, throwing his arms in the air. "What do you know?"
As I thought, I looked down at my thumbs, spinning them around each other. I felt my eyebrows cinch as I became frustrated, coming up with nothing. There has to be something. A place, a memory, a name-
And like a light bulb, a name was all I could think about. My name? It felt so familiar it had to be. For the time being, it would have to do. Since it was the literal only thing I knew remotely close to something about me.
"My name." I spoke up, looking back at the boy. He nodded, gesturing for me to continue.
"Well what is it?" He asked quickly, before wincing again at his rushed movement.
"Indigo." I sighed, the name rolling off my tongue naturally.
"My names Indigo."
˛
Scott, the boy who'd saved me, offered me a place to stay since I didn't remember where I lived. Whether or not it was even in this state. I accepted obviously and on the way to his house, I'd learned quite a lot about him.
He was starting sophomore year tomorrow, along with his best friend, whom had an amazingly difficult first name. ButScott assured me I could just call him Stiles. He was also trying out forlacrosse this year, for first line actually. I applauded him for hisconfidence, which was a surprise to him.
Apparently, Stiles wasn't so motivational towards his best friend leaving him on the bench this season.
He had also clued me in on the blood seeping through his jacket. Before he'd found me, he was run over by a stampede of deer and bit by something big. And when Scott said big, I could tell he meant it. The way his eyes widened as he nodded told me he was praying he'd never run into the beast again.
Scott suddenly started walking up one of the driveways, and I assumed it was his house. There was a car parked, one he'd mentioned wasn't his. Transportation for him was his trusty bike which, from what I could see of it now, didn't look so trusty.
We walked up the porch steps and Scott dug into his pockets, pulling out a jingling set of keys. He slid one into the door lock, quietly trying to slide it open. Tip-toeing in, he shut the door behind me, barely even making the slightest noise. Nonetheless, a light suddenly turned on, illuminating where Scott and I were standing. Scott's head snapped to the top of the stairs and when I followed his gaze, I caught sight of a woman.
"Scott McMall-" She sighed, pushing her dark hair out of her face. "What do you think you're doing?"
"Just... you know." He tried to start off, quickly thinking of an excuse. "Being a good friend."
"And how are you doing that at two in the morning?" She sighed, walking down the stairs now. The closer she got, the more nervous I got. What did I say? Did I lie? Did I tell her I woke up in the middle of the road?
"This is Indigo." Scott smiled at me, giving a look that said 'just go with it'. "She had an incident and she doesn't remember where she lives or- anything, really."
Her face instantly went from annoyance to empathy, as she looked to me.
"Oh, sweetie..." She cooed, placing her hands gently on my upper arms. "Do you need a place to stay?"
"I don't mean to intrude..." I politely mumbled, still feeling slightly nervous. Was she really just going to take me in like that? A complete stranger?
"Don't worry." She smiled, shaking her head. "You can have the guest bedroom next to Scott's. I'll have him bring you a t-shirt to sleep in."
I smiled at her generousness, before walking towards the stairs as she let go of me. Silently walking up the stairs, I began to her a hushed argument from Scott and his mom, well knowing it was about me. Either way, I continued up the stairs and down the hallway at the top of it. I followed down one way, eventually seeing a door that I could only guess was Scott's. So, I kept walking until I saw the guest room that his mom was talking about. I walked in and immediately took notice to the large comfy bed in the middle of the room.
I took a deep breath as I entered the room, taking slow steps towards the guest room bed. I don't know if it was because I felt like I was intruding or if that these people were strangers, but I almost didn't want to touch the bed in fear of ruining it somehow.
A knock from behind me startled me out of my thoughts, my body spinning around to see Scott with the t-shirt in his hands.
"Thought this would be comfier than those jeans you- woke up in." He sheepishly smiled, handing it to me. I lightly chuckled as I grabbed it and unfolded it, immediately feeling the soft texture of the cloth.
"Definitely." I nodded, smiling at him. "Thank you."
"No problem. I have tons." He shrugged, waving it off.
"I meant, this-" I said, gesturing to the guest room. "Thanks for taking me in. You know, after saving my life."
He smiled again, softly nodding this time. Scott walked out of the room, leaving me alone. I decided to try to attempt to get some sleep, some real sleep this time. Not sleep where you wake up in the middle of the road.
I stripped down to my underwear, slipping on Scott's t-shirt. It smelled nice, the fabric warm and comforting against my skin. I stepped over to the bed, crawling on to it and under the sheets. Almost sighing at the softness, I immediately snuggled into the mattress, consumed by more warmth.
Now, being in bed, I started thinking. Was this bed like my old one? Did I have an old one? Where did I live? Did my family miss me? Did I even have a family?
I decided those were thoughts best saved for another time, and just like that-
I fell asleep.
˛
"Don't worry."
"I have something-just for you."
"You're time will come."
The same voice repeating these same three things as I walked through woods, not a familiar scene. I panicked more and more as the voice kept talking, my head frantically snapping left and right as I tried to spot the person it was coming from.
Nothing.
I kept walking, my bare feet collecting countless wet leafs and dirt on the bottom as I treaded through the trees. I had no idea where I was going or even a way out of here.
Just anything to get away from this voice...
I instantly sat up in bed, taking deep and heavy breaths. I realized I'd pushed all the sheets off my sweating body, seeing as they were in a crumbled pile at the end of the bed.
I sighed and swung my legs over the edge, hopping of the bed. After that, I don't think I could go back to sleep anyways. I walked over to my pile of clothes on the dresser, changing back into them. Not like I had anything else. So, I walked out of my room and into the hallway, just as Scott walked out of his room.
"Oh." He spoke, seeing me in the hallway. "I didn't think you'd be up."
I shrugged, walking up to him. "I just woke up. Where are you going?"
"Um.." Scott trailed off, before slightly chuckling. "School?"
I made an 'oh' sound, nodding my head. "Forgot."
"What about you? I mean, I don't think you really know anyone or... where to go." He awkwardly explained. Scott was right. Where the hell was I going? I didn't know anybody. Come to think of it, I didn't really know anything.
"Maybe I could come with you?" I asked, hopeful. "Since, you're kind of the only person I know."
Scott thought about it before shrugging. "I guess. But, I have to talk to Stiles before we go to class. Is that fine?"
"Yeah." I smiled and nodded. "Might as well make new friends, right?"
Scott smiled and chuckled, as we walked down the hallway.
"You may second guess your friend choices..."
˛
"Come on." I groaned, waiting as Scott chained up his bike. He huffed and rolled his eyes at me, just as a silver, fancy-looking car pulled up next to him. The guy driving opened his door, knocking Scott in the back. Scott stumbled before turning around to face the guy.
"Watch the paint job." The guy snarled at Scott, before shutting the door and walking up to the concrete where he saw me.
"Hello." He smirked, stopping to talk to me. "I haven't seen you before, and I definitely would've noticed someone as... beautiful as you."
I almost rolled my eyes. As good-looking as he maybe could've been, the way he was talking to me was screaming 'get him away'.
"Wish you wouldn't have." I sarcastically smirked back. He looked taken back before he composed himself and glared at me, walking away. I looked back to Scott who smiled at me as he walked up to me.
"You haven't even been here 24 hours and you're already doing well." He smiled proudly, walking down the sidewalk as I followed.
"Was he always like that?" I raised an eyebrow, trailing next to Scott.
"I like to think not.." Scott winced, sighing. "Nobody's born evil, right?"
I slightly laughed, shaking my head. Who know's. I just knew I didn't want to ever run into him again.
"And, there's Stiles." Scott smiled, pointing forward. I followed his gaze and watched a buzz-cut boy quickly rush over to us. Even when he reached us, he was still freaking out too much to notice me. His eyes were frantically running around Scott, gesturing to him.
"Okay, let's see the thing." He said. I raised an eyebrow at Scott until I saw him lift up the side of his shirt, revealing a large bandage over his side. Is that what was hurting last night when he found me?
Stiles made a disgusted noise, before Scott dropped his shirt back down, nodding.
"Yeah, it was too dark to see anything, but I'm pretty sure it was a wolf." Scott almost whispered. I felt my eyebrows cinch, confused as to what he meant. A wolf attacked him?
"No, not a-" Stiles was saying before his eyes finally caught mine, his eyebrows raising. He looked me up and down, his gaze not leaving me as he took in my appearance.
"Stiles?" Scott said, trying to snap Stiles out of it. But it didn't work. Stiles still looked at me, before he swallowed.
"Hi." He breathed out, letting a soft smile fall on his face. I returned his smile, giving a short nod.
"Hey." I breathed out, not being able to draw my eyes away from his. They were really hazel, a slight glint in the corner from the sun.
"I'm Stiles." He said back, a full goofy smile now taking over his lips. I chuckled and nodded.
"I know. I'm Indigo." I giggled, glancing down at my shoes for a split second before back up to his eyes, which were still on me.
"Hello?"
Me and Stiles both snapped our heads to Scott, who's eyebrows were raised.
"Is anybody even paying attention to the bite on my side?"
"Sorry." Stiles apologized, giving him a half smile. "But, yeah. You didn't hear a wolf."
"What do you mean 'I didn't hear a wolf.'. How do you know what I heard?" Scott chuckled.
"Well, for one, California doesn't have wolves, okay? Not in like 60 years." Stiles argued.
"Really?" Scott repeated, his eyes widening.
"Yes, really. There are no wolves in California." Stiles huffed, annoyed.
"Well..." Scott sighed. "If you don't believe me about the wolf, then you definitely aren't going to believe me when I tell you that I found the body."
"Wha- are you kidding me?" Stiles sputtered, smiling like an idiot.
"I wish." Scott groaned. "I'm gonna have nightmares for a month."
"Oh, God. That is freakin' awesome. I mean, this is the best thing to happen to this town since-"
His eyes shifted behind us, making me turn around as I grew curious. My eyes immediately noticed the red-head, strutting her way towards the school with her handbag notched into the crook of her elbow.
"Since the birth of Lydia Martin. Hey, Lydia." Stiles tried to say, but she didn't even flinch. She continued her way down the concrete, like Stiles didn't even exist.
"What's wrong with her?" I scoffed, turning back around to them.
"Nothing." Stiles defended. "She just hasn't seen me yet. Which is your fault by the way." He finished, pointing at Scott.
"Uh-huh." Scott rolled his eyes, like he heard these words often.
"Dragging me down to your nerd depths. I've been scarlet-nerded by you." Stiles continued to blame him, narrowing his eyes at him.
The bell rang and I freaked out. I have to get my schedule from the office.
"Gotta go, Scott. Lunch?" I hurriedly asked as I walked away.
"Sure." He shrugged. I smiled and nodded, turning around but not fully walking away before catching the last of their conversation.
"Where in the hell did you find her?" Stiles whispered and I could practically hear the smirk in Scott's voice as he responded.
"You won't believe me when I tell you."
˛
I sat in the office as I waited for the principle to walk out and give me the Beacon Hills High School run-down. I slumped in my chair, as I listened to the phone conversation of the girl next to me.
"Three calls on my first day is a little overdoing it." The girl chuckled. There was slight mumbling from the phone, as she shifted through her bag.
"Everything except a pen. Oh my god, I didn't actually forget a pen." She groaned, hurriedly rushing through her bag more before stopping.
"Okay, okay. I gotta go. Love you." And she ended the call, groaning.
"Hey, if it makes you feel any better, I don't have anything." I laughed.
She looked at me, before softly laughing. "Nothing?"
"School was a last minute decision this morning." I shrugged, before sticking my hand out. "Indigo."
"Allison." She smiled, shaking my hand.
"Sorry to keep you girls waiting." A voice sad. I looked in front of us to see a man in a suit, more likely the principal, smiling at us.
Me and Allison both stood up, following him as he walked out the office door.
"Ms. Allison, you said San Francisco isn't where you grew up?" He made conversation as we walked down the hallway.
"No, but we lived there for more than a year, which is unusual in my family." She chuckled.
"Well, hopefully Beacon Hills will be both of your last stops for a while." He smiled, stopping in front of a class room door. He opened it, letting me and Allison walk in first before he followed in after us.
"Class, these are our new students, Allison Argent and Indigo... I don't seem to have your last name on record." He said confused.
"Its just Indigo." I sighed. They don't have anything of record about me.
"Well..." He smiled, turning back to the class. "Please, class, do your best to make them feel welcome."
Allison thanked him and walked towards an empty seat, which I noticed was behind Scott. I awkwardly looked around for another, spotting one in front of Stiles. Thank God, they were both in this class.
I quickly walked towards it, looking at Stiles before I sat down.
"This taken?" I asked, pointing down at it. He was dazed before he shook his head quickly.
"Nope. All yours." He smiled, gesturing to it. I smiled and took my seat, taking a deep breath.
I looked back at Allison and saw her hesitantly take a pen from Scott.
"Thanks." She whispered.
I watched Scott turn around, the biggest grin on his face. I shook my head, turning back around.
Oh Scott. Already crushing.
˛
"Hey, Allison!" I exclaimed, rushing to her at her locker.
She turned her attention to me, smiling. "Hey."
"I'm going to stick with you, considering we're both new. Hope that's okay?" I asked.
"No, that's great! I was hoping I'd have at least one friend by today." She chuckled.
"Well, now you have-"
"That jacket is absolutely killer. Where'd you get it?" A nasally voice asked, making me look next to us. I spotted the red head from earlier, the one that was rude to Stiles.
"Um," Allison awkwardly looked down at her jacket, then back to the girl. "My mom was a buyer for a boutique back in San Francisco."
"And you..." She smirked, pointing at Allison. "-are my new best friend."
"And you?"
I snapped my head to her, raising an eyebrow. "Me?"
"Yes, you." She sighed. "What's your name?"
"Indigo..." I hesitantly answered. Her eyes traveled down my body, accessing me.
"You too. You're almost as hot as me." She pursed her lips, smiling.
Allison gave her small smile as the red head giggled when the rude guy from this morning, wrapped his arm over her shoulder.
Figures.
"Hey, Jackson." She cooed, snuggling into his side.
"Anyways, there's a party this Friday." The red head continued, talking to Allison.
"A party?" Allison repeated, raising her eyebrows.
"Yeah-" Jackson spoke in. "Friday night. You two should come." He smirked, turning to me.
"Oh, uh, I can't. Family night this Friday." Allison winced, shrugging. Jackson's face dropped slightly before he started insisting.
"You sure? I mean, everyone's going after the scrimmage." He explained.
"You mean like... football?" I asked, raising my eyebrow. Jackson scoffed and rolled his eyes at my answer.
"Footballs a joke in Beacon. The sport here is lacrosse." He smugly said, narrowing his eyes at me. I rolled my eyes. Jackson was already testing my patience.
"We've won the state championship for the past three years." He bragged.
"Because of a certain team captain." Lydia giggled, leaning in to smash her lips to Jackson's. I made a disgusted face and turned my attention to Allison.
"See you later?" I breathed out, trying to block out the noises.
"I hope." She chuckled. I smiled at her and walked down the hallway, before I caught Stiles and Scott. Their eyes were already on me, so I began walking towards them, happy to see people I could tolerate.
"Tell me again why you like her so much?' I sighed, mocking Stiles.
"Tell me how you haven't even been here for 24 hours and you're already hanging out with her." He exclaimed, his eyes wide
"I don't even know." I groaned, running my fingers through my hair. "But I do know, that I won't be doing it again."
