chapter fifteen: [a not-so patient patient]
"To endure is the first thing a child ought to learn, and that which he will have the most need to know."
Indigo's POV
Darkness.
That was the first thing I was greeted by when my consciousness came back to me. My face scrunched up at the feeling of needles in both of my arms. The awareness of the tubes removing and reentering fluid into my body made my stomach churn.
I slowly fluttered my eyes open, the presence of light making them sting. But, as I got used to it, my eyes fully opened, revealing I was still in the crummy hospital room, I was still laying in the crummy hospital bed, the same itchy knitted blanket still harshly rubbing against my legs.
Using my hands, I began to sit up, scooting back to put my head against the head board. When I succeeded, I relaxed again, my eyes searching around the room. Although, there was nothing, my brain clicked with a new feeling, a new "memory". Maybe that wasn't the right word, but there was something.
Something about this room, I know it. There was something missing. Maybe not missing, either. There- weren't there usually flowers in here?
The absence of the colorful plant made me feel slightly left out. Didn't patients receive flowers? Get well cards? Something within the subject of "we're glad you didn't die".
Only people with family get those, my self-conscious so greatly reminded me.
I nodded to myself.
"Miss?" A small voice spoke. I turned my head towards the noise, seeing a nurse, clad in purple scrubs. Part of me longed to see Melissa instead of this stranger.
The nurse stepped in through the door way and shut the door behind her, clutching a clipboard close to her chest.
"How long have I been out?" I asked her as she walked closer. The nurse let out a sigh, pulling up a small wheeled chair.
"You should have been out for another three days." She admitted. My eyebrows furrowed. Three days?
"Then why am I awake right now?" I asked. She ignored my question and began to fiddle with the tubes trailing from my arm to a small rack of a clear liquid.
"Hello?" I raised my eyebrows at her. Again, she didn't respond and she stopped messing with the tubes, picked up her clipboard and started walking out.
"Hey, why aren't you answering me?" I scoffed, attempting to get up. I felt a slight tug on my arm and groaned, leaning back. I glanced back at the tubes and rolled my eyes, yanking them out. I hissed at the feeling, gritting my teeth. Trying to ignore the pain, I swung my legs over the edge of my bed and lifted myself off, my feet curling at the feeling of the cold tiles.
I pushed off the bed, stumbling into the wall. I groaned and began using the wall to get to the door, reaching to grab the handle. I twisted the handle and swung open the door, rushing to get through the opening. I grunted at the speed before I walked out into the bright white hallway. There were no other nurses walking down this hallway and I sighed in relief.
Taking small, slow steps, I began heading-
"No, okay, you're the reason both of them are in there. You're the reason Indigo is in there. Why should you get any part of this?" I heard Stiles snap.
"Do you have a car?" Jackson's voice scoffed. Stiles' silence led me to believe he did not in fact have his car here.
"Did you bring the Porsche?" Stiles asked.
"Yeah." Jackson answered, and I heard the jingle of keys.
"I'll drive." Stiles bluntly put and I heard him snatch the keys. Footsteps grew nearer and I became anxious.
"Miss, you are not supposed to be out right now. How did you get out?" A shrill voice scoffed from behind me. I spun my head around, my body freezing. Shit.
More mumbles and footsteps came and I turned my head back to the corner, as Stiles and Jackson both emerged. Completely engaged in conversation until the nurse spoke up again.
"I'm not going to ask you. You need to get back to your room." She snapped, snatching my wrist in her hand. I hissed at the feeling, immediately putting in resistance. No, I needed to talk to him. I needed to see him.
"Indigo?"
My head twisted once more, eagerly leaning forward as the rest of my body did it's best to rebuttal the woman's grip on me. My eyes met a wide-eyed Stiles, scanning my body in awe and surprise. My breath hitched in my throat as his eyes finally met mine, and I saw him physically take a breath. His lips slightly parted, before running his tongue smoothly over them to wet them. Although, as soon as he took two steps towards me, the nurse behind me suddenly pulled with more strength, retching me into her complete hold as her arms clasped around me.
"Stiles!" I cried, looking from the woman's arm to him. The boy's eyebrows furrowed and his jaw clenched, before he rushed over. His hands gripped the woman's wrists, trying to pry them off. I looked back to Jackson to try to ask for help, but the boy was frozen, his eyes wide at the matter at hand. But from behind him, I watched several doctors enter from the same previous corner, rushing towards.
"Stiles!" I yelled, trying to nod my head in the direction behind him. Stiles momentarily stopped struggling, looked back, and jumped slightly at the fact.
"Hey!" One doctor yelled, before grabbing Stiles with immense strength, enough to completely remove him from anywhere near me.
"No! Hey!" Stiles angrily shouted. He almost escaped the first doctor by wriggling but the second came up next to him and also held him, rendering him useless.
"Stiles!" I yelled, struggling harder. I could hear the woman grunt behind me as she slightly gripped me harder. My hair was blocking my face as I wrenched back and forth in the nurse's arms. I felt my feet begin to drag across the sleek tile, creating high-pitched squeaking noises as the woman began to drag me back to my room.
"Indigo! Hey, let her go!" I heard Stiles shout, followed by more fierce grunts and the similar squeak of feet.
"I think we should starting up-ing your sedatives, Indigo. Can't have you telling anyone about your- condition." The nurse huffed quietly. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion until the view of the doorway came into my vision as we passed it, further entering my room.
"No, hey- Indigo!" I heard Stiles yell out.
"Stiles!" I shouted, before the door was slammed shut, blocking my sight. The nurse's arm left my body, and I fell from the sudden relief. I heard her scramble with something as I stumbled back to my feet. I huffed and ripped the door back open to see the doctors trying to drag Stiles away as well.
"Stiles!"
He looked up to me and his eyes widened, but I knew as soon as I felt a pierce in my arm. I sighed, immediately becoming tired.
"Indigo!" Stiles shouted. My left shoulder slammed into the doorway as I slanted over. My eyelids became weights until I couldn't get them back open-
And I fell to the floor.
˛
"Indigo..." A soft voice dragged out, before fading.
"Wake up..." The same voice whispered. I shook my head, sighing in frustration.
"I- I can't."
"Yes. You. Can." The voice snapped, suddenly hostile. I flinched at the harsh tone.
"H-how?" I asked. I tried to get a look of where I was, but all I knew was I was tied down to a chair and a familiar voice was speaking to me. Although, I couldn't pin point it.
"You have to learn." The voice softly said, contrasting back to calm, echo.
"Learn what?!" I groaned.
"Control. Use your emotions to tie you to your human side."
"What in the hell does that mean?" I sighed.
"How you feel. How useless you always feel, how helpless you always feel, alone, desperate, weak, out of place." The voice hissed.
I furrowed my eyebrows at the words. How would they know that?
"How you feel when you constantly remind yourself how close everyone else is? When Scott and Stiles say something and you can't even begin to try and think about what it means? When Allison and Scott leave together, falling in love with love? When you see Stiles gawk over Lydia?-"
"Stop it!" I snapped.
"How you feel when you remind yourself you're just the girl that woke up in the middle of the road? When you put yourself down because 'as if someone would ever date someone like you'? As if Stiles would ever date someone like you?"
"Please..." I shook my head, looking down to my lap.
"Please what? Put you out of your misery?" The voice hissed, but I could tell it had gotten closer.
"Just tell me!" I shouted, growing angry and feeling even more vulnerable tied up in this chair. "What the hell am I?!"
"Isn't it obvious, Indigo? The seering pain from the flower in the woods? The 'warm' smell you always feel waft into your nose when you're around people, blood? Especially around Stiles?"
"Wh-" I breathed out, shaking my head. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Think Indigo!" The voice yelled, now behind me. I flinched at the volume, shrinking my head down below my shoulders.
"I am!" I screamed back, tears forming. How in the hell did this person expect me to just know what I am?
"Not hard enough!" It hissed, and I cringed. Breathing reached the back of my neck, before it moved around to my left ear.
Then the voice began to whisper,
"Tue s ulciscendumque compelleretur. Quaeris horridis qui iniuriam et vindicare. Nunc auidtate caedis intemperantius tuus qui segregant animals pravis cogitationibus appetite."
"Why- why can I understand that?" I sniffled, confused. That was not English.
"It's what you are that allows you to! Now, repeat it!" It shouted.
"Why?!" I snapped.
"Repeat it!" I angrily shouted, instantly close. I let out an involuntary whimper, before nodding.
"Y- you are the... revenge." I slowly said.
"Continue..." The voice echoed.
"You, you seek the horrid... and- and avenge those who have been wronged." I shook.
"Keep going."
"Your... t-thirst for blood, yearns for the ones who cause immoral doings." I whispered. I stopped, waiting for the voice to explain, but nothing. I couldn't hear anything. The room was dark and I've never felt more alone.
"So- so what?" I snapped. "I'm some sort of blood-sucking vampire?!"
"You are more than that!" The voice snapped and with a gust of wind, I saw a figure in front of me.
"Then what the hell am I?!" I screamed out, wriggling my hands under the tight rope. A slight girlish chuckle rang out from the voice, before the figure took two steps forward. A soft light casted on them, making me gasp before my body froze.
"You're me." The voice spoke, but this time I could see it. She had glowing fierce green eyes, and the smile she beamed contained a set of teeth, much like Scott's when he changed. The figure brought up her hand to reveal a set of claws much like Scott's as well, but instead of one point of the top, there was two. The figure in front of me was frightening, unnerving, intimidating and...
Me.
