"We are all failures- at least the best of us are."
― J.M Barrie
HELENE SEELIE GALANE picked up yet another box, nudging the door open with her foot as she walked into their new house. Ella sat in the living room, trying to make their t.v work, something she had been working on for a week.
"Let me help," Tom, Cas' father knelt down to help her, turning the t.v around to put in a chord.
Ella ran her hand through her hair in frustration, "I'm sorry-dad usually did this-"
Tom looked up, "Ella..."
Their voices floated away as Helene swallowed thickly and began to walk up the stairs, her box in her hand. Kicking her door open, she let the box slip from her hand and landed on the floor with a thud.
"I got my last box mom!" She yelled. "Do you need help?"
Ginger walked in, Kevin behind her, "Stop yelling. Just unpack I'm going down to start dinner."
It had been five months since the death of their father and the disappearance of the heir of Belwick. And five months since Celestial, Legion's twin sister had replaced him. Cas' family decided to support the Galanes, since they had always had a close relationship. Helene hated the pity of all her friends and family.
Moving into a closer home to the castle with her best friend's family was the only good thing that had happened to her during the entire five months. Her thoughts constantly wandered off to Legion and whether he was alive.
She began to unpack, pulling out her clothes and hanging them into her closet. Their new house was large with plenty of guest rooms. The garage was huge and the dining room was set up looking vintage with yellow lights and low chandeliers. Helene supposed she should be happy.
But she wasn't.
In fact, she was miserable.
Just as she was about to start complaining to herself, the door opened and Cas came in, "When is Brenna visiting?"
This was the fourth time he had already asked her one day. "She's not visiting Cas. Maybe for work but nothing else."
"But why?"
"She's the captain of the guard of SwynCrest. I'm sure she has a lot to do." Helene muttered.
Cas looked disappointed, "Do you need help?"
Helene turned to look at him, "We're stuck together forever, aren't we?"
"Oh shush." Cas managed a small smile as he picked up one of her bras. "I'm sure it will be fun."
"Put that down!" She hissed. "If you want to help then put all my books into my shelf-"
Cas shrugged and began to pull them out of their box.
"-in alphabetical order." Helene finished.
Cas put the book back, "Oh I remembered! I have something to do. Have fun, catch you later!"
Helene rolled her eyes as she watched him exit her room with a bow and shut the door behind him.
"Stop complaining Helene. Shut up Helene. Why are you so ungrateful Helene? Grow up Helene." She muttered under her breath, "It will be fun, Helene they said."
Hanging up her clothes was a boring and tedious job that took her more than an hour. After her clothes, she started on her books which she did not order from A to Z. Making her bed was probably the worst. She made 10 trips in total to ask for help, to get the bedding and then her pillows and blankets and god knows what else. She was not even close to finishing. Her weapons were left in the boxes along with her gear and her survival kits.
"HELENE!" Her mom roared from somewhere in the dining room. "GET DOWN HERE!"
"I'm coming!" Helene snapped. "Let me finish this goddamn-finally!"
She was out of her room in an instance, not wanting to stay there any longer. Walking down the curled staircase reminded her of her stay in the castle when they had been invited to go to SwynCrest. She had never imagined becoming part of something so much bigger.
Even now, when she went outside, people recognized her and asked for her picture or a signature. Helene found it annoying and it pissed her off on most days. The other day, she tried to act as if she was her favorite celebrity.
Everyone was already seated by the time she came downstairs.
"Sorry," She muttered. "Did you get the t.v working?"
Sophie, Cas' mother, handed her a plate, "Eat it before it gets cold."
"Thanks," Helene poured herself a glass of water.
"Ella and I are done one the t.v. It was taking a little time to work so we came to eat first." Tom answered.
Cas and Raylan were too busy muttering between each other to know what they were talking about and Ella was too busy eating.
Helene looked down at her hands and let herself blow a wisp of fire into her palm. It wilted and moved, glowing orange, making her eyes stare at it and stare at it...
"Helene?"
The fire vanished and she looked up fast, "Yes?"
"No cellphones." Her mother glared at her.
Helene smiled sheepishly and began to eat just as Kevin ran into the room, "The t.v is working! It's working! The news is on and it's talking about Ciara!"
"Queen Ciara Kev," Ginger muttered, hurrying to the living room to see what he was talking about.
Helene shot to her feet, followed by the others and to the living room, which was still messy and not close to ready for anyone to sit. And there, on the wall the t.v was running, showing a picture of Queen Ciara.
Helene remembered her coronation five months ago. As soon as she had gotten back to SwynCrest, they crowned her. Surprisingly, in her speech, she mentioned Helene, showing some gratitude for helping in bringing her country back.
And now Ciara-Queen Ciara-was on the news once again.
"...it has reached the ears of the public that the Queen and King of Belwick are now searching for a husband for the beautiful heir of Belwick. They have invited all the countries they have alliances with to bring their best men so that she may have a chance to choose the future ruler of Belwick. Queen Ciara has contacted them, letting them know she will be coming for a visit, bringing her fierce and brave captain of the guard, Brenna." The lady smiled into the camera, "Over to you Dan."
"We have Queen Ciara on the call here. So your majesty, how ready are you to strengthen your alliance with Belwick?"
Ciara appeared on the screen, looking all queenly and polished clean. "The bond between Belwick and SwynCrest has always been strong and a chance to strengthen them will do great to both of our countries, I am sure. My parents were old friends of Queen and King Blackburn, and I hope they continue to live as such in their hearts. We have the best intentions, and we hope that they do as well."
Dan smiled, showing off his white teeth, "What a great talk, my majesty. You see, a very young ruler but a ruler to her bones. That is what she is. There will be multiple balls held, inviting Scars all over the world to have a chance to win Princess Celestial's heart. Over to you Sarah."
"Thank you, your majesty and thank you Dan. Let's take a look at the weather forecast. It seems a bit chilly and seems like snow will be falling this week-"
Helene closed the t.v. "Well, at least Brenna's coming."
Ginger and Sophie were eyeing each other.
"What?" Raylan asked. "What?"
"I think Cas and Raylan are old enough to go to the ball. Maybe find themselves..." Sophie cocked her head, smiling happily.
Tom's eyes widened, "Such a great idea! You are becoming young men, and it is about time that both of you find yourselves a lady-"
"Dad!" Cas looked horrified, "Can we please go eat dinner?"
"It's going to get cold," Helene added lamely.
"Right." Sophie smiled, pulling everyone to the dining room, "Food first."
