Chapter 6 Part Two

I'm back! Now, I'll analyze the second part of 1 Corinthians 6.

"'I have the right to do anything,' you say—but not everything is beneficial. 'I have the right to do anything'—but I will not be mastered by anything." (6:12)

My Note: Paul addresses sin in this verse. We certainly have the freedom to sin, but sin isn't beneficial. In addition, sin masters us if we don't repent and follow God. It's foolish to justify our sinful actions by saying "Well, we have freedom and right to do anything."

"You say, 'Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.' The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body." (6:13)

My Note: Paul references food (perhaps gluttony, more specifically) as a worldly desire of the flesh. God made us in His image, to follow Him. He didn't make us to follow worldly desires. Paul also addresses an immoral desire common among members the Church: sexual immorality. Perhaps Paul will continue writing about this topic.

"By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!" (6:14-15)

My Note: We are supposed to be followers of Jesus, new versions of ourselves. Why should we revert back to our old selves and commit sexually immoral actions? Reminds me of the saying, "What Would Jesus Do?"

"Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, 'The two will become one flesh.' But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit." (6:16-17)

My Note: God places a lot of value in sex. Sex is meant to be a demonstration of spiritual unity. However, when we devalue sex and do it with whoever we want, we satisfy our worldly desires, but not our spiritual desires. Sex is much more than just satisfying ourselves physically.

"Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body." (6:18)

My Note: Sexual immorality is a unique sin. It harms us differently than other sins, since most other sins affect ourselves and others on the outside. However, when we commit sexual sins, we harm ourselves and others spiritually. We must remember that our bodies are members of Jesus Christ. Spiritually sinning against our own body will damage our relationship with Him.

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies." (6:19-20)

My Note: Finally, we must remember that we represent Christianity. Jesus lives within us and He knows everything we do. This should encourage us to honor God with our bodies by avoiding sexual immorality.

Conclusion: Before we became Christians, we acted like the world in many ways. However, when we became Christians, we realized that God and His Holiness are greater than the world and its sin. God created a new body, a new mind, and a new spirit for all of us. We became new and Holy creations to follow God.
So why do we often ignore God and revert to our old selves, acting and sinning like the world?

We often forget that we are new creations, new versions of our old selves. We must remember and follow what God teaches in order to overcome the world. Specifically, we must remember how God views sex and what God teaches about sexual immorality. Sex before marriage is wrong. Sex with multiple people is wrong. Etc, etc, etc.

Please don't forget all the information. I recommend reading 1 Corinthians for yourself and rereading my chapters in order to retain all the information. I certainly need to reread. As always, thank you for reading!
