18 - MASKS
OF COURSE, when Kaelyn's mission was specifically to make sure Peter didn't leave town, he did exactly that. Last minute, he rejoined Academic Decathlon and was now on his way to Washington D.C. Thankfully, Beth now had an in with Liz and was able to join the team as well. Now, it was late on the night before the competition, and Kaelyn was hiding out in Beth's hotel room with her suit and a tracker on Peter. It felt weirdly unhealthy to be tracking her boyfriend, but a mission was a mission.
"He's on the move, you gotta get out there and trail him or else we're gonna lose him and God knows what he's gonna get into. Clearly, he didn't join just because he wanted to see the monuments," Beth sighed, eyeing the tracker on her laptop and typing in a few things, most likely trying to pinpoint his exact location. "Suit up, Baby-G, he's getting further and further away."
With a sigh, Kaelyn opened up her suitcase, revealing the red and black suit. As she was lifting it to put it on, she noticed it was lined with hints of gold. She smiled, appreciating the small detail. Another thing that made her different from Peter, which felt nice. The last thing she ever wanted to be was a copycat. Kaelyn always wanted to be her own person and she was determined to keep it that way.
Just before she put on her mask, Beth gave her a once-over and gasped melodramatically, "Honestly, Kae, if you were a lesbian, I would hit that but probably only in that suit. Or the cheerleading uniform. Whatever works."
The girls giggled, Kaelyn swatting her friend lightly on the arm, "Oh, just focus on one crush at a time you lovesick fool! Where's the comm? I need you in my ear."
"Built into the suit which means I can talk your ear off and you can't take it off without revealing your identity so ha!" Beth exclaimed very matter-of-factly, causing both girls to burst into fits of laughter. "Now, mask up! You got places to be!"
Kaelyn pulled the mask over her face and something shifted. She felt so different yet so much like herself. She appreciated that Tony left a place for her bright red ponytail to spill out so she wouldn't deal with her massive amount of hair being squished into the mask. Despite the eyes appearing bright white and opaque on the outside, she had perfect vision as if she were looking through a one-way mirror.
Once Beth's earpiece was on, she spoke into it simply, "Testing, 1, 2, 3, ready to go kick some ass and keep your man in check?"
Kaelyn smiled under the mask, "Ready as I'll ever be."
The cold D.C. air penetrated the spandex suit as she rested in the trees. She didn't have the same web-slinging powers that Peter did, but Tony had made her hands and such have an amazing grip so she could watch from any angle she needed.
Currently, she was watching Peter mess around with his suit while he was practically giving himself away to the men in the white van at the gas station she sat above. She rolled her eyes at his antics, but part of her was afraid for him. The guys Peter was chasing were sitting right there and Peter couldn't get his shit together long enough. Finally, he hopped back onto the sign announcing the gas prices. She was relieved he stopped messing around, but he was dangerously close to Kaelyn's hiding spot. For a moment, despite the closeness, she was relieved. Maybe Peter would take this as a sign to draw back and to resign back to the hotel and let them go another day.
Then, Peter launched himself into the back of a semi-truck heading the direction the men drove off in and she lost all hope for the complete and utter dumbass she called a boyfriend. She leaped from the tree and landed in a roll onto the road. Thanks to her incredibly enhanced suit, she was able to leap one more time and latch onto the bottom of the truck, sliding underneath it as the road passed by dangerously close to the back of her head. She had no idea where she was going, but as long as she was with Peter she knew they'd be safe.
"Damn, Kae! That was badass! Just watch your head please," Beth exclaimed into her ear. The first part of her statement was so loud and a shock to the quiet night that the redhead flinched.
"Is there a way I can make sure Peter hasn't left the truck?" Kaelyn whispered into her suit, even though there was no way anyone around her could hear her right now.
Beth was silent for a moment, probably looking at what the suit could do and getting an answer for her. "You should be able to activate X-Ray vision hold on, I think I can do it from here. Not sure how to do it from there, yet."
The girl waited for a moment before her vision completely changed. She gasped as she could now see through the truck and see Peter's figure lying in the bed of it. Letting out a relieved sigh, she relaxed slightly. He was still here, thankfully. Now, she just had to wait and find out their destination.
After quite a few minutes, the truck finally pulled into a warehouse. Men began unloading the shipping container Peter was in and just before the warehouse door closed and the truck pulled away, she launched under the door and as it closed, launched herself onto the shipping container Peter was in. She sat and waited, sitting criss-cross on top as she wondered how long it would take Peter to break out. After a few minutes, the doors of the container burst open and fell off, completely destroyed. Peter burst out onto the scene, looking around at the warehouse they were in. He had yet to notice the girl atop the container.
"Suit lady, where am I?" he asked as he looked around. Considering Kaelyn heard no response from this suit lady, she assumed it was something only Peter could hear. Either that or Peter had gone crazy from the solitude of the shipping container.
She watched as Peter began to freak out and open the doors of the warehouse. However, his super strength was no match for the insanely secure vault they were in. Kaelyn sighed, laying down on the container. She never knew hiding in plain sight would be as easy as it was.
Finally, she got bored and coughed to get his attention. He jumped a foot into the air as he finally looked over at the masked figure.
"What the hell? Who are you? How long have you been there?" he questioned rapidly as he jumped atop the shipping container to meet her.
"Since you got here, dumbass, we carpooled," she spoke, her voice coming out disguised through the suit. One thing Tony drilled into her head was that Peter must not know that this masked figure was her. It could compromise everything.
"Why are you here? Are you like me? Like, radioactive spider and shit?" Peter asked, tilting his head as they faced each other. Deciding to have some fun with this, she mirrored him and his motions. "Hey! Stop that! Who are you?"
She hesitated, "That's for me to know and you to... not know."
"Hey! That's not how the saying goes!"
"It is now."
"Were you following me? Why? Did Mr. Stark send you?"
"None of your business."
"We're stuck here until morning can you just tell me? I'll bug you about it all night if you don't."
Kaelyn shook her head. He groaned and fell back so his legs stayed on top but his torso hung over the open shipping container. Gracefully, she leaped over him and landed on the floor in a kneeling position. Honestly, part of her felt beyond badass right now and she was loving it.
"Be careful, Kae," Beth warned in her ear, "One look at your hair and he's gonna know."
"Shit," Kae muttered to herself, knowing the other girl was right.
"So, who are you?'
"Not telling."
"Who are you?"
"Still not telling."
"I can go all night," Peter continued, jumping off of the container as well. He stepped up to face Kaelyn, attempting to intimidate her by invading her personal space, but she just kept backing up. Finally, he had her up against a wall. Her breathing was heavy, her palms sweaty underneath the suit.
Kaelyn sighed, trying to convey her best "boss bitch" expression through the suit. Crossing her arms, she attempted to remain unbothered by the closeness between them, "I'll show you mine if you show me yours."
She expected Peter to pull back, to refuse to show his identity, but apparently, this boy was desperate to find out who this girl in a mask was. So, he pulled the suit off his mask. Kaelyn sighed. God, he was so cute. Too bad she was about to completely ruin this relationship.
"Kaelyn, I know he's your man but you gotta stay secret, don't—" her best friend's voice cut out as she removed her mask.
"Kae?"
