Chapter 8: The Upside Down
You listen to the rhythmic sound of El's breathing echo in your eardrums as Mike gets up quickly. "Where are they at?!" He makes his way to the gymnasium doors that lead outside and throws them open forcefully. Peaking his head out into the cold night air. "Nancy, Jonathan?!" Mike yells.
Mike comes back in and walks over to the bleachers. "They're gone." Mike says.
"Who?" Lucas asks, his head perks up.
"Nancy and Jonathan."
"They're probably just sucking faces somewhere." Dustin says, looking over at Mike.
"Gross." Lucas adds, his face twisting in disgust.
"No. No way!" Mike argues, shaking his head in disbelief.
"You think they went with the chief?" Dustin asks.
"I don't know." Mike responds.
"No." El says, Drawing all of the eyes onto her. Her gaze shifts between the kids before Mike speaks.
"No, what?" You question.
El nods her head on your shoulder and looks up at you. "Demogorgan." She whispers, her fear audible.
The boys slide off the bleachers, dropping to the gym floor below. "Where are you guys going?" You ask innocently, head twisting.
"We can't just sit here and wait around." Mike says, fixing his jacket.
Lucas shakes his head, "In case you forgot we're fugitives and we have undercover agents after us!"
"Yeah and we still don't know where your sister is." Dustin adds.
"El can find her." Mike responds.
"I still think we should still stick with the chief's plan." Dustin insists, staring into Mikes eyes.
"I agree, we should keep El and Ten out of sight and we can keep them safe. Besides, she's with Jonathan she'll be okay." Lucas says.
"Yeah. She's kinda a badass now." Dustin comments, turning to walk away without another word.
"Where are you going? I thought we were sticking with the plan." Mike yells after him as he walks.
"I am— I am, I'm just gonna go get some Chocolate pudding. I'm telling you, Lunch Lady Phyllis hoards that shit." He says while walking away. Lucas goes after him, leaving Mike.
He turns towards the two of you nervously, rubbing his neck. "Go ahead and go to the cafeteria. It's out those doors we came into the first time and to the left. We're gonna go get you both some food so you can recharge." He says, as he jogs to go catch up with Dustin who's already at the door.
You exit the gymnasium with El at your side and go to the Cafeteria. You sit down at a lunch table near a window and watch as Mike, Dustin, and Lucas go through the fridge.
The moonlight shines through the window, making the school lunchroom look almost creepy without any people in it.
"I found it!" Dustin yells, drawing you of your head. "That bald faced liar. Always saying she's out." Dustin says as he grabs a ton of chocolate puddings.
"You feel better?" You ask her, she sighs and shakes her head.
"I- I know it's hard but." You remember the boxes of eggos she had when you found her in the woods. She must've forgotten about them after your incident. "I'll give you some eggo's and we'll eat them together. Okay?" You ask, raising an eyebrow.
She giggles, smiles and then nods quickly. "We would be the best together. Maybe—" You stop, you were almost about to say something that would end your friendship with El. "Nevermind."
El looks over at you and raises an eyebrow. "Friends don't lie."
"I don't know, maybe we could do something, like together."
"A dance?" How did she know, did Mike already tell her?
"Yeah- like. The snow-thingy Dustin told me that's where you go to the gymnasium and dance to cheesy music." You say, you can feel your anxiety levels begin to rise.
"You want to go?" She questions, her doe eyes seeping into yours.
"I mean, yeah; but you're not supposed to go with a friend. You're supposed to go with someone you like." You stare into her eyes, a small smile making its way to your face. You wait for a moment as El looks at you patiently.
She quickly leans forward and gives you a kiss on the lips lightly. You can feel all the blood rush to your head almost immediately.
"I'll go with you." She smiles.
"That's Nancy!" Mike yells, he puts down the chocolate puddings and runs over to the windows in the cafeteria. He runs out of the cafeteria and you listen to him open the entrance to the school.
Dustin and Lucas both put down their box full of Chocolate Pudding down. "This'll charge your batteries right up." Dustin says excitedly.
"Guys! Guys!" Mike runs back in and over to the table where you all surround the pudding. "They found us!"
No, no, no. How, why, just when you and El we're getting close.
You grab El's wrist and run down the halls the opposite way, "Shit, Shit! Where do we go?" Dustin yells, also scrambling to find an exit.
"I don't know but they knew we were in the gym." Mike responds. You take a right and go down the hall towards an exit. When you almost reach the door three officers with guns open it and push through.
"Go back!" You holler. You turn back to where you came from to see two guards at that exit, your head twists in every direction and you flee the only way left.
You slam to a stop as a woman with blonde hair with two officers flanking her step in front of the exit. Now that there's no way out, you'll just have to make one. "I got the front you got the back?" You whisper to El. She nods.
You push as hard as you can, you continue to push even when the blonde haired woman and the two officers behind her start to bleed from their eyes. You push harder one last time and they fall over, obviously dead.
You listen as the people behind you also fall to the ground, you forget about the people in the other hall, luckily, El didn't and you listen as they fall to the ground.
El turns to look back at you but falls to the ground. You immediately drop to her side, Mike, Dustin and Lucas stand around her. "El!" You yell, shaking her.
"She's just drained." Dustin says concerned but not convinced its life threatening.
"No, something's wrong. She isn't waking up." You respond, shaking her arm strongly.
"El?" Mike asks,
"El." You repeat.
"She's barely breathing." You put your head to her chest. There's only shallow breathing and you almost can't hear it.
"Leave her." A voice says, you look up and see Dr. Brenner stepping over the blonde woman's corpse. "Ten." Dr. Brenner shakes his head as three officers stand behind him.
"No, we're not letting you have them! You'll have to kill us." Mike says, The three of them step in front of you. You try using your powers but nothing comes, more copious amounts of blood drip down your nostrils.
A splitting headache runs through your head as you look around, four guards flank behind Lucas, Dustin, and Mike.
"Behind you." You cough out, The three of them look behind them too late and you go limp as an officer grabs you from your right side. Pulling you away from El.
They drag you away from El, the one person who you wanted to protect with your life. They're forceful, grabbing your arms and legs strong enough to bruise them easily.
The three other officers pull Mike, Dustin, and Lucas away. "Let go of me, you bastards!" Mike yells.
You can barely keep your eyes open as you watch Dr. Brenner sit in front of El and touch her face. Almost like a father would and speaks to her. "No!" You shriek with all the strength you can muster. "Leave her!"
Brenner only shoots you a side glance, making the guards grab you harder. "Eleven, you're sick. I'm going to make you better. We're gonna go home."
"Bad. Bad. Bad men." She pulls her head away from Brenner and looks at you. "Ten... Ten..Ten." She murmurs, her mind in a half daze, her eyes struggling to find you in the constant move of blur taking place in her head.
The lights begin to flicker as you try to speak. "B-Blood." You watch as the wall at the opposite end of the hall begins to crack from an overwhelming force. Skin or something otherworldly creeps out from the hole, spreading from the gap.
As soon as the head is through. The creature climbs through and stands at the end of the hall. Your vision fades, your in disbelief, you instantly try to slide back to no avail. Why now, why now, you can barely even keep your eyes open. You try to readjust your vision, even with the internal shaking within your bones. It's way taller than any man and its skin is slimy and rough. Just the sight of it sends shivers down your spine and makes your entire body screech in fear.
The four men let go of you, and you watch as they protect Dr. Brenner as he evacuates.
"I can carry her." You jog over to El and carry her in your hands. She's heavy and it feels like you're carrying bricks when you're this exhausted. You look back and watch as the Demogorgan jumps on top of him.
"Go, go." Lucas yells. You speed down the halls, carrying El down the same hall you came in through as another four officers come through the exit door.
Your vision begins to fade in and out, the corners blackening, the exhaustion is finally creeping up, please just a few more steps.
You take another right and go inside an empty classroom. Mike opens the door for you and you dash inside and place El atop of the teachers desk at the end of the classroom.
You let go but she reaches out and grabs your hand, you lean down and speak to her. "Just hold on, a little longer. The bad man's gone. And, when we get home, we can finally get some beds and I'll get you as many eggos and we'll live, Together." Your voice is shaky, there is no fear, only sadness for your only love.
"Promise?" She whispers softly.
"Promise." You say. Tears lace your eyes, making the dirt underneath crease your already dirty cheeks.
You stop talking because something peculiar is happening. There's no gunfire.
"Is it dead?" Mike asks, glancing at you.
You shrug over your shoulder as Dustin begins to speak. "I hope so."
Almost on cue, the door to the classroom slams open and goes flying into the wall. The wood door shattering into a thousand pieces. A roar pierces through the classroom and you begin to prepare yourself mentally.
Still, the fear overwhelms your system as your entire body shakes with excitement.
"Get the wrist rocket! Hurry!" Mike yells, Lucas throws his backpack on a table and rummages through it. He grabs the wrist rocket that lays inside the bag.
"Get the rocks, get the rocks now!" Dustin hollers, Lucas grabs a handful of rocks from inside the bag and drops them on the table.
The demogorgan begins closing in slowly. "Kill it!" Mike screams, he aims back and shoots. It barely does anything to it.
The Demogorgan roars in response and starts closing in quicker. He grabs another rock and shoots it at the Demogorgan.
Lucas reaches the last rock and releases it when the Demogorgan's mouth opens. It goes in but the Demogorgan goes flying backwards, not because of the rock but because of El.
You hadn't noticed El now standing beside you. She steps forward, pushing towards the creature out of this world.
"Eleven. Don't!" Mike tries running up to you but El flings him back lightly.
"I- I think we can do it." You whisper, stepping up next to Eleven it feels as though your batteries are all fired up now that you'll finally end the Demogorgan with her.
You reach the front of the Demogorgan and the two of you begin holding him down against the wall.
Eleven turns around to look at Mike. Her eyes begin to turn glossy as tears fall from her eyes. The veins are beginning to blacken in her face, and she looks more tired then anything.
"Goodbye Mike." She says.
You also turn around and look at the three boys who had taken you in. "See you later." You grin brightly. It hurts to know you won't see your friends ever again.
The two of you turn back to the Demogorgan. You feel El grab your left hand. She grips it tightly and starts pushing into the Demogorgan with her power.
You join in, another headache rattling through-out your head. You feel a tear drop from your eye but you continue to push. Against the pain, and against the animal.
You can feel the power at which you and El are using against the Demogorgan. Your face starts to begin to feel as though it's scorching with fire, like a entire bonfire just lit itself alight in your face. You continue pushing with all your might.
The Demogorgan begins to start dying, its body parts turning into dark black particles. You're almost done now, the light blue core is the only thing left.
You push again, You want to fall on the ground and roll over in pain so terribly.
The particles begin to surround you two and the last thing you feel is El gripping your hand tightly.
