Chapter 7: Papa
You shake out of your cold reverie, skin shaking and mind pulsing, with every beat of your heart you can feel the insides of you scrunch against itself, a never ending cycle of pain.
Your hearing is dulled, you take a deep breath in. Standing up, you look around the room hesitantly, gazing at each of the doctor's surrounding you as tears begin to well up in your eyes.
Your knees feel as if they want to buckle, you deny them the right. Why are humans such fragile things? You think to yourself.
"Ten!" A voice calls out, pulling you out of your mind. Eleven runs towards you, dropping into your arms. You lean your head against hers as her nose sniffles before she begins to cry.
"Hi." You respond, she laughs at your choice of words. Her laugh causes you to laugh as well, it's as if it's only the two of you, even while being surrounded by multiple doctors.
"I missed you-" She looks up into your eyes, "Did you? Did you se-'' She begins to question, you nod and tightens her arms.
"I'm sorry." You say.
She looks up at you in confusion, not understanding, "For leaving-" You add.
She smiles, a single tear sliding down her cheek. "It's okay." She responds.
Dr. Brenner and Dr. Owens approach, they had been watching the scene with curious eyes, now they're even more curious after the unusual connection between the two.
"You two are incredible, I- I can't even believe my eyes!" Dr. Owens says in exasperation, looking at you.
Eleven releases the hug, taking her place beside you, gripping your right arm protectively. You stand idly, switching your eyes between the duo.
"Great." Brenner compliments, smirking slightly.
You feel a slight irritation ring through your neck, maybe the sight of Brenner made you angry, or maybe you're just mad at yourself.
You hadn't even realized you'd been dragged out of your regular room, now you stand in front of Project Nina, the gigantic bulk of metal making you grit your teeth in anger.
It's terrible, a reminder of the horrors inflicted on the two of you.
You want to rip it up, out of the metal bindings and crush all of the doctor's, they might have given you your powers back, but at what cost? Your sanity? El's sanity?
You catch yourself, if you did that you'd be as bad as papa, if not worse.
You decide a show of force would be enough to show them what you're truly capable of. Without raising a hand, barely even a flick of the head, the gigantic bulk of metal ascends, dangling above as everyone looks up in excitement, co-workers exchange victory glances, everyone stares at the two of you, waiting for your next words to be heard.
"You--" You try to find the words, the words to express your feelings, they come hesitantly, but they come nonetheless. "You are the monster."
A Doctor's POV
A cigarette burns in his mouth, reaching the edge of his lip. The tension had been high before but now it's loud enough for everyone to hear.
The boy, a fifteen year old boy, had stricken fear into the hearts of every man and woman within the facility.
He takes a step forward, toward the two doctors, his right eyebrow raised, a determined glint in his e/c eyes as he stared at the two.
His girlfriend-- sister-- whatever she is, still hugs his arm, her head leaning into his arm. She looks as if she'd follow the boy anywhere with that look in her eyes.
Ten glances at Project Nina, still hanging in the air, dangling like a light bulb, it looked as if the boy hadn't even realized it was still under his control.
His lips curl into a vivid smile, a sudden feeling of dread stabs the doctor's stomach, he hadn't realized it before but, after the doctor that had touched him, how easy it had been for the boy to hurt him, even while being unconscious of the power.
How easy would it be for the boy to kill them all right now?
The boy slowly releases his control over the object, eventually clicking back into place.
After what seems a decade Dr. Owens speaks gently, as if trying to coerce the boy to calm down. "Ten-"
The boy shakes his head, his brows furrowed in anger. "That.. isn't my name. Not anymore." Ten-- no, Y/N says, his eyes showing a sense of victory.
"Y/N," Owens says, the boy's smile grows more noticeable. "We," Owens points to himself then at Brenner, "Are not the enemy."
"It's one, not u-" Brenner begins to add.
"Henry." The girl says, glaring at the doctor. "Henry is his name."
"Henry-- we believe he's back." Brenner responds, he nods to a small doctor in the crowd, having held a folder. She walks over to the duo, handing the folder to the girl.
The girl takes it into her hand and opens it for Y/N to see, he glances down at the paper, the doctor's await his reaction, having been shown the pictures beforehand.
His smile drops, "Hawkins," He murmurs under his breath, Eleven's eyes widen in surprise as well, they both look up at the doctor's.
"Our friends-- they're in danger, right now." Eleven states, glancing at Y/N.
He nods.
"W-well we don't really know that." Dr. Owens answers.
Brenner grabs a pencil off of a table nearby, "We believe he's chiseling away at the barrier between our worlds."
"Chiseling?" Y/N and Eleven question.
"We believe Henry is hitting at it, causing pressure," He glances up at the two children, they both look at the pencil nervously. "And when pressure builds, it causes cracks, and if too many cracks are left unfixed. The dam will.. break." The pencil snaps in his hand, falling to the ground with a clatter.
The pencil had been a reference to the barrier between us and the upside down. The doctor's try to search the kids eyes for any emotions but none come.
Y/N slips out of Eleven's hand, his eyes wide, he turns around and runs, most likely towards his room, leaving the doctors and Eleven watching him leave.
The tension in the room releases; but it feels as if it's not the end just yet.
Y/N's POV
You struggle into your clothes, placing your socked feet into your dirty shoes. You had whispered into El's ear before leaving for her to get dressed.
You take one final glance into the mirror, you hadn't done it before, in fear of what they had done to you.
You embrace it, the slightly dark bags under your eyes. Your Buzz cut, even your slim/bulky arms. You suppose the most drawing feature in the mirror is your e/c eyes, they look exhausted and without any light within them.
You turn the valve, opening the door, "You are a liar!" You hear Eleven's voice echo through the halls, you jog closer, turning the corner to see Brenner and Owens standing in front of the casually clothed Eleven.
"T- Y/N can you please tell her how stupid this idea is?" Owens pleads with his eyes as you take your spot next to Eleven.
"We're leaving." You state finally, glancing at Brenner.
Brenner shakes his head, "You and Eleven are not yet ready." His arms crossed, his steady, cold gaze staring a hole into your eyes.
You don't look away.
"You must understand; when One kills, he doesn't just kill, he consumes everything they ever are and will be. Their memories, abilities, everything. We do not know where he's been these lost years but it's safe to assume he's more powerful than before, to act rashly, to underestimate him would be a grave mistake."
Brenner steps forward and plants his hand on your shoulder, he leans down next to your ear, "Ten, please realize she'll follow you anywhere, this is foolish, it'll kill you both."
You grit your teeth, does he still think of you as his son, his test subject?
"No, you're wrong Brenner." You say, pushing his hand off your shoulder.
"You cannot win this fight Ten, it'll be a loss, a drastic one at that, it's impossible." Brenner responds.
Dr Owens perks up from behind Brenner, "Nothings impossible, I can call Stinson, she's got connections at Nellis. That's two hours away, I bet if we're quick we can make it to Hawkins by nightfall."
"That would be a grave mistake," Brenner responds.
"Waiting would be an even greater mistake, what if Henry makes his move before we've had the chance to throw a punch?" Owens adds.
Brenner shakes his head, looking down at the ground in annoyance.
"That will be a risk we will have to take." Brenner says, looking up at Owens.
Owens shakes his head, "We agreed this wouldn't be a prison Martin, and we can let the kids decide whether or not what they want to do. You may not like it, but it's the truth." Owens says finally, he walks over to you, looking you in the eye before looking at Eleven. "You're sure you want to do this?" He questions.
Eleven looks up at you, silently, you both make your choice and nod.
He nods as well, "Alright, pack your things, not only your clothes this time, and say your goodbyes." He says, he takes his hand off your shoulder and continues down the hall behind you, eventually entering a room.
Brenner stares you down, this time you, you're not scared, you shrug his cold stare off and continue to your room, Eleven following close behind.
No Ones POV
Y/N and Eleven continue down the hall, but something rings out through the entire facility, a blaring alarm. The two watch as doctor's jog past them from the Project Nina room.
Eleven peaks around the corner, her eyes landing on the entrance to the room. "I need to talk with him." Eleven says, referring to Brenner.
Y/N sighs, watching as his partner walks to the door. She enters and the door closes behind her, he raises an eyebrow, that hadn't happened before had it?
Moments Later
"Why?" Eleven questions, stepping forward, closer to the man. He watches her closely, the scar on his cheek shining in the light brilliantly.
"Why do you ruin everything?" She adds, looking up at the man.
He stares at her before answering, "Ruin?" He responds, tilting his head. "Eleven, this is idiotic. What are we doing?"
She shakes her head, tears forming in her eyes. "N-no, you are the one who started this. You are the idiotic one."
Brenner shakes his head aswell, "Idiotic? Eleven, you both came to me broken, I fixed you."
She follows his words, nodding as if she agreed. "Fixed us." She laughs at the words, a tear slipping down her face. "You ruined my life."
He looks down at her shaking his head, it's as if he doesn't believe it himself, "You killed them papa, You did." She adds, smiling. "Not Henry, not me, not Y/N. You!" She pushes her finger into his chest.
A tear glides down the man's face but Eleven doesn't stop. "You are a liar! You ruined our lives, you couldn't just leave us be?!"
"Eleven it was bigger than you both and me when I started this, I did what I did to protect us." He responds, his voice is hiding the shakiness well, the fear and sadness must be overwhelming.
"You lie, you are a liar!"
He shakes his head, "I try to make the right decisions Eleven, that's why I did what I did, that's why I'm doing what I am now."
Her eyebrow raises in confusion, as if she doesn't understand. "What?" She murmurs, looking up at the man.
"He'll distract Henry, long enough for you to prepare." Brenner says, looking down at the ground, as if he's guilty at his decision. "One of you must stay."
Eleven shakes her head, "No, we are leaving t-together." She states, she turns towards the door and casts one final glance at Brenner. "If you try to stop us, I'll kill you and everyone else."
Eleven stretches her arm outward, the lights in the room flicker and blink non-stop until the door flings open. Cascading across the ground, it sends up sparks, Eleven looks around, expecting Y/N but he isn't anywhere to be seen.
Something stabs into her neck, it digs deep, as she pulls it out, it's obviously a tranquilizer. She turns around to face Brenner. Her face is a mask of emotions, anger, sadness, but most importantly guilt.
She sends him flying backwards, planting him on the wall of Project Nina, he looks as if he was a doll being played with. She blinks, her eyelids growing heavier with every blink; the glare never leaving though.
His legs and arm crack against her endless pressure, she steps forward, brows furrowed with anger.
He yells in pain, but drops as Eleven falls to the ground. He sits up, nose bleeding and coughing, but alive nonetheless.
Outside the room, down the hall and around the corner as the army infiltrates the missile silo.
Y/N raises his hand outward, forcing the men backwards with a display of force. Without a doubt he didn't need to raise his arm, it helps with his control though, if he didn't control it the entire silo would explode.
The military officers push forward towards Y/N and the encamped soldiers. Men stand up from behind the shields, firing shots at them; a bullet finds itself in one of Y/Ns protectors.
Most of the bullets are aimed at Y/N though, trying to murder him as he's the biggest threat. He catches them with his power, or whatever it is and sends it back towards them, as if he was reflecting the bullets. Most of them hit the shields but one or two find themselves embedded into a few military officers and their armor.
Y/N smiles at his abilities, he tries to mimic Kalis abilities for the first time since he's lost them.
They work better than expected.
He makes it seem as if he's really a being without any human features, a dark black hole. He steps forward, snapping their necks but they continue to fire their entire clips at him without end.
Their eyes widen in fear as he gains more and more distance. They begin to step back.
The officers protecting the bunker's eyes open wide in fear, "Retreat!" One of the main officers on his side call, and the officers begin to run down the hall towards the Project Nina room which is obviously more defendable.
A stray bullet finds itself skimming across Y/N's pants leg, digging into his skin and then out quickly, the illusion falls quickly and he drops to the floor quickly, clutching his leg.
A single man steps forward, his shield in front of Y/N, protecting him from the raining bullets. "Go." He orders, the boy stands quickly, dashing towards the end of the hall with a newly acquired limp.
The Man's POV
He hadn't even realized he had protected the boy, it felt more like a father saving his child from falling, an unconscious reaction.
He was prepared to give his life for the boy, as long as it was for the greater good.
Hopefully his sacrifice wouldn't be in vain, the military quickly overwhelms him, sending bullets into legs and torso. He drops to the floor, his shield clattering onto the floor. He catches one final glance of the boy limping into the cover of the other officers.
He gargles on the blood, some of it overtaking his lips, falling to the ground beside himself. He exhales, knowing it's his last.
No Ones POV
Brenner steps out of the exit, holding Eleven in his hands. A calculated bullet finds itself embedded in his shoulder, sending blood everywhere.
He looks back at the three helicopters surrounding the exit.
It doesn't stop him though, he tries to run with Eleven in his hands but there's no cover, only the dead bodies of doctors who had tried to escape before.
Another bullet flies, hitting him in the back of his leg, he drops Eleven as he falls to the ground, his face planting onto the dirt.
He struggles to stand, gripping the back of his right leg. He finally stands, gasping for air.
Another bullet flies from another helicopter, hitting him directly in the back, he drops to the ground, bleeding out of the wound.
Eleven looks at Brenner hazy eyed, the drugs finally beginning to wear off. Y/N is nowhere to be seen, she realizes this and begins to search for his body within the dirt.
He isn't anywhere to be seen, a horn beeps to her left yet she doesn't look, instead focusing on the helicopters.
She doubts she has the ability to take them all on headon, but she doesn't have any other choices.
She stands, both of her hands outstretched against the helicopters. She tries to force them down but it doesn't happen, they're barely even affected. Pop shots fire, hitting the ground beside her. She grits her teeth and her brows furrow deeper.
A bullet flies towards her quickly, before she can even realize what it is. It stops, mid-air, inches in front of her face before flying back towards the helicopter that fired the shot.
It lands on the helicopter but doesn't do any real damage.
A figure emerges from the exit, limping, blood covered, his face dripping with blood, his or another's she isn't sure. He doesn't glance at them, instead, walking towards her.
He limps, it pains her to see it, a large blood trail follows behind him.
Above, in one of the helicopters.
The sniper exhales, firing another shot at the girl, he expects the bullet to hit the ground or hit her but it doesn't, instead it flies back towards him.
He inhales and raises his sniper again, the helicopter begins to fly out of control, "We're going down, shoot them!" The pilot yells into the microphone.
The sniper aims and tries to shoot but the bullet misses them, it's not even close.
Below the helicopters.
An unconscious force within Y/N's mind forces the helicopters to begin to fly out of control, he leans down next to Eleven, brushing some of the dirt off of her face.
He grabs her and holds her, helping her stand up. He turns back towards the helicopters, Eleven gazes up at him, looking deep into his eyes for any reaction.
There is none, only the eyes of an animal, one that must be fed.
He glances at the three helicopters and without a sound he twists his head slightly and watches as they begin to come closer, they take fire, their shots firing wildly into the sky or into the ground.
He doesn't use any other abilities, he wants them to see his face, his real power up close. He wants to see their faces too, the fear in their eyes once they realize they're going to die.
He doesn't show any emotions on his face, it's void of anything, pain, anger, anything.
He glances down at Eleven a final time before focusing on the helicopters. He grits his teeth, he looks down and the three helicopters finally slam into the ground.
He wanted to yell, to scream in victory at them. He doesn't do so though, he's scared by himself, scared by the potential to hurt everything and everyone.
The helicopters explode, a blast of heat falls upon Y/N and Eleven drying up the blood upon his face. The remains of the helicopters burn brightly, shimmering parts of the fire drift around the hot air half-hazardly.
Y/N lays Eleven on the ground, allowing her to stand by herself. She lays there for a moment before standing, a large collar wrapped around her neck.
"You, you did that." Eleven states, looking over at the burning helicopters. Y/N stands there silently, the only sound from him is the large inhaling and exhaling.
A car appears from behind him, throwing up dust in its path. It comes to a stop on his left, the doors open and everyone comes rushing forward, Eleven steps forward and Mike plants a hug onto her.
Y/N looks at Mike, his eyes landing on them, he can't say whether or not he's jealous.
"Ten-- you're back, and you.." Will begins to say.
Y/N nods, "I did. I killed them all." The boy says neutrally.
Will gulps deeply, the nervousness beginning to rise deep under his skin, something seems odd about the boy now, something's changed.
Eleven, Jonathan, Argyle, and Mike's eyes widen, "All of them?!" Mike questions, releasing the hug.
Y/N nods.
"Rad," Argyle says, smirking at Y/N, he looks as if he was going to laugh like it was a joke.
Argyle looks around, finally noticing the bodies. "Shit.." He murmurs.
"We should go," Jonathan adds, looking towards the bunker exit where people begin to exit.
Y/N had saved them by killing all of the military officers and they began to exit after all of the helicopters had been destroyed.
Everyone nods along with Jonathan, "Hold on," Y/N murmurs, gazing at Brenner who has blood leaking from his mouth as he stares into the sky.
Y/N walks over to the man and kneels down, "Hey." He murmurs, looking over Brenners body.
"Ten." He says.
"Brenner." Y/N responds.
He smiles weakly, "Ten, I want you to know.." His smile grows larger, "I'm proud of you both. You both are my family." He exhales shakily, "You're my child.." His hand reaches your bloody cheek and he rubs it lightly.
"Im sorry I deleted our final tape, you didn't need to see that," What does he mean final tape, what? What happened. "I only ever wanted what's best for you both-- please Ten tell me you understand." Brenner pleads, his eyes searching Y/N's.
Y/N nods, his face not showing any emotions, his eyes are hazy though. "I-I understand." But he doesn't, he doesn't understand anything, why did this have to happen, and what did he mean by final tape?
"I love you Y/N." He finally says calmly, calling him by his real name, smiling at him; like a father.
Y/N shakes his head, a tear rolling down his face. He grabs Brenners hand and holds it.
"Protect everyone, and." He coughs loudly. "Love her with all your heart." He glances past Y/N where everyone is grouped, watching intently.
"Goodbye Y/N." He says.
"Goodbye Papa." Y/N responds, finally calling him by his name from all those years ago.
Brenner smiles, and exhales once more. His arm going limp, Y/N looks away from his corpse and lets the hand drop before standing.
"Lets go." He states, returning back to the group. They all nod, slipping into the surfer boy Pizza van. The keys ching as the key slips the ignition.
"We have to go to Hawkins." Eleven says. Y/N glances at her, finally noticing the missing collar. Brenner must've released it when the two were talking.
"That'll take like three days." Jonathan responds, "Why?" He questions looking back at her.
"They're in danger." Y/N adds, looking out of the back window at the people beginning to escape from the facility.
"From what?" Will questions, leaning forward.
"A monster, Henry." El answers.
Mike raises an eyebrow, "Who's henry?"
El looks over at him, "Another test.. subject."
It's quiet in the Van before everyone starts speaking again, Y/N gazes out of the back, still not speaking, his eyes look dead and without any light.
A hand grabs his shoulder lightly, drawing his attention, "It's okay." She says, leaning her head onto his shoulder.
He nods, the light beginning to return. "Also-- you stink," She jokes, laughing.
"Probably th-" He begins to speak then realizes it's a joke, "Oh-- you're one to talk." He responds, laughing fakely.
The tension begins to release but something still tugs on Y/N's mind, drawing his attention away from the situation constantly.
