Chapter 6: The Lost Sister
The three of you sit in the kitchen not long after El went into the void. Your eyes switch from El's to Becky's.
"So, it just kept repeating?" Becky asks El, a concerned look on her face.
"Repeating?" El answers with a question, not knowing the meaning of the word. A confused look on her face.
"Like a circle, showing you the same image again and again." Becky responds.
"She kept showing the girl in the room." El says, she looks over at you uneasily.
"The rainbow room?" Becky asks, El nods. "What'd the girl look like?" Becky inquires, a look of concern in her eyes.
"Different."
"Different from you?" You question, El nods.
"I think this is why Mama wanted me to talk to her. She wants me to find her."
Becky nods and leads the two of you through the halls again, and into a room beside the living room. There's a large grey filing cabinet placed against the wall. There's a desk placed underneath a window with papers thrown everywhere on it.
Becky opens a part of a cabinet and throws a folder out and continues looking through it. "When Terry was looking for you, she kept files on other missing children she thought were like you." You and El sit on the ground and begin looking through the folders.
Becky throws another folder out, this one is yellowish white almost vanilla, multiple papers rest inside of it. She grabs another one and throws it on the table. El opens one up and begins looking through it. She stops at a newspaper near the back and pulls it out. A folder falls out from it and El picks it up.
Indian girl missing from downtown London. It shows a young girl with a dark complexion looking at the camera blankly.
"Is that her?" You ask, El nods.
"What's that one?" El questions, pointing at the unopened folder.
It's blue, with large black letters lining the top: Y/N- with the last name colored over. For what reason you have no clue, You hadn't even noticed it was yours before, you quickly grab it and open it up.
On the left there's a picture, a baby, your skin color, he has your eyes and nose. Your face is smiling in the photo, it's almost sad. How different would your life be, It's not only you though, there's multiple people in the photo. Your father, you assume holding you. Grinning brightly, everyone else also smiles Its almost like an entire family came to watch you get born, maybe that entire family watched you get taken away.
"What the-" She murmurs, grabbing the photo from the folder. She holds it up closer to her eyes to get a better view, she glances at you then to the photo.
You continue to look, a newspaper clipping is the only thing in the folder left. 'Fatal Crash— 1 Dead.' You stare at the clipping for a moment as El also reads it.
You feel tears begin to well, some do drop. The clipping, the one dead. It's there for a reason. Who's the person that died? Your mom or your father? You exhale deeply, trying to control your emotions.
"Well let's try to find that girl." You say, smiling gamely, the smile hurting your cheeks. You don't really care about the girl, you just need a few moments to think.
El and the two of you go back to the TV again, you switch it to the static channel and El tries to find the girl. She pulls the blindfold off soon after and Exhales in frustration. Wiping the blood onto her sleeve.
"Did you find her?" Becky inquires.
"No." El responds.
Night-Time In El's old room
The two of you look at the picture as El holds it in her hands. Side by side in the bed. After El's failed attempt at finding the girl, Becky let us go to bed.
"It happened to me too. Didn't it?" You ask rhetorically. Staring at the ceiling blankly. El looks over at you in the bed, "What?"
"I got taken." You say, continuing your stare.
"You don't know that." El responds, shaking her head. A look of sadness and pity in her face. "Do you want me to find them?" She questions, looking deeply into your eyes.
You sigh and close your eyes.
El's POV
A girl that looks like an older version of the girl from the rainbow room throws a piece of wood into a barrel with fire inside of it. I gasp and come back to my senses, the girl in my mind was so visible and the facial features looked the exact same to the girl in the picture. I look over at Ten to tell him the news and he snores lightly.
I get out of the bed slowly and wrap the covers hanging off the bed around him. He continues to sleep peacefully. I wipe the blood off my nose and run down the steps.
"Becky, I found the girl." I say, I listen to Becky's voice near the front door. "I just don't know who else to call, he gave me this number and came here looking for them—Yeah, Jim Hopper. He came along with some woman named Joyce Byers. Uh—well that's hard to explain. There's this other girl and her brother or something and shes missing, I'm not sure if he is But I think they're both in trouble. And you are? Florence.. okay."
I hear footsteps coming down from behind me, I turn around and look at Ten face to face, our eyes staring into each other. The sleepiness still in his eyes and his movements stiff. I grab his hand quickly. Leading him through the kitchen. "Eleven. What's going on?" He asks, I don't respond. In fear of alering Becky to our presence. I notice the leather bag sitting on the kitchen table next to Becky's wallet. I grab the leather bag and open the wallet, grabbing the bills, pocket change flies out the wallet. Making a loud clinging sound. I hope that it's enough to help us travel far enough to reach wherever we're going.
Your POV
"I'm going to have to call you back," You hear Becky say in the other room. El leads you out the back-door and into the night. "El. What's going on?" You ask again, starting to get angry at her non responses.
The night is dark and calm, the only sound audible is your rushed breathing and crunching steps.
El looks at you as she runs with you by her side. "Becky was calling someone to get us. Bad Men I think."
"You think?" You question, she nods her head and you speak again. "What if she didn't?"
"Do you want to go back?" El asks stiffly, staring at you with doe eyes; already knowing the answer. You gulp and start to pant from all the running.
The two of you stop at a bus stop after running for a while and take a seat on the bench inside it. You stay quiet, deep in thought.
The sound of tires screeching to a halt draws your attention in front of you. A light blue bus with a yellow streak through the middle of the blue stops in front of you.
The doors open to the bus and El grabs your hand pulling you inside. The bus's floor rattles underneath your feet. El doesn't wait for the man to speak that drives the bus to speak. She hands him a ten dollar bill and begins walking down the aisles.
The two of you take a seat on the right side against a window. El leans against the window as you sit on the outside. El holds up the picture to her face and starts to breathe in slowly and exhale.
"We're going to Illinois." El says slowly, bringing herself back to the reality of the situation.
"That's where that girl is?" You ask, you really don't want to leave this place. This is your home. Or at least it feels.
El nods and the conversation between you ends, about three hours in. You look out the window beside El and see a sign with the words 'Illonois."
El and you get off of the bus, looking at the view in amazement. People walk around in the city in beautiful, elegant clothes and Steam fills parts of the sidewalks. Large skyscrapers sit next to each other.
"It's Beautiful!" You say too loud, smiling. People look at you in surprise.
El smiles and looks at everything with a child's fascination. You imagine that's how you look right about now. Two police officers look at you both as you pass. Though you barely care, you doubt they know who you are and what's happened in Hawkins.
A man crashes into you, surprising you. "Mouth Breather." El answers before you can say anything. El begins walking and you follow beside her. Still amazed.
You keep walking, turning corners. Eventually you turn a corner beside a liquor store. "We're close." El says, You nod and the two of you begin walking through an alleyway. Homeless people sit beside the buildings in the long alley-way. All of them taking long looks at the two of you.
"They're all dead!" A homeless man screams as the two of you pass by him. This sends shivers down your spine. Did he mean Mike and the rest of them at Hawkins? The two of you begin jogging down the alley-way.
You reach the end and a warehouse sits idly in the night, the moon lights up puddles along the place. "This is it."
"Stay beside me, if this girl is the one who was with you. That means she probably has powers too."
"I- Okay. Just, don't attack her unless she attacks you." El responds, you nod and El grips your hand tightly.
The two of you walk to the door and open it, the smell of burning wood and cigarette smoke invades your nostrils but you step inside with El beside you. You close the door gently.
"You should do stand-up Ax. There's a place a few blocks over." A woman's voice says, You walk around a large crate and see multiple people surrounding a barrel with burning wood inside it.
"Hello?" El asks, gripping your hand harder. The two of you walk closer even as the people begin to stand up. There's two girls. One has messy blonde hair and the other has straight black hair. One of the men has a Mohawk and the other is big and buff.
They begin to surround you both, "Well well." A man with a mohawk says.
"What are they wearing?" The girl with the messy blonde hair questions.
"Are those overalls? And what's he wearing?" The girl with the dark complexion and black hair says and laughs.
"There aren't any cows to milk here kids." The blonde haired woman states.
"I'm looking for my sister." El responds, the man with the mohawk walks around the two of you. Like a shark circling someone in the water.
"Aw... Poor Shirley Temple lost her sister." The mohawk man says.
"I saw her. Here." El states, reaching into the leather bag.
"Uh-uh, hand out the bag. Slowly." The buff man orders, you look over at him. With a look that says are you serious.
El takes her hand out of the bag, the picture of the girl that was missing resting in her hand. The man with the mohawk stops walking and steps in front of you. "Give me that shit." The man says, Grabbing the picture out of El's hand.
He looks at it and the woman with dark black hair grabs the picture from his hand. "Shit! Is that Kali?" She asks.
"Kali?" You question.
"Who else knows you're here?" Mohawk man answers back with another question.
"No one." You respond.
"So, you show up like magic with that picture?" He asks sarcastically.
"Yes, like magic." You say, smirking. Casting a wink at him that stuns him for a moment.
"Calm down. They're just kids." The black haired woman says, trying to calm the situation down.
"Kids that could get us killed." Mohawk man protests. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a sheathed knife. "If I have to ask you again, you're both going to start losing things. Starting with those pretty little locks." The man unsheathes the knife and aims it at you and El.
"Calm down, please." You say, face neutral as his little act to scare you doesn't work. You have something much more powerful then a knife anyways.
"Axe, Put down the Knife!" The woman says.
"How. Did. You. Find. Us?" He demands an answer.
El looks at you, uncertainty and fear in her eyes.
You close your eyes and think for a moment. You grab the knife and the man with the mohawk steps back, surprised. His arms raised as if he was about to get into a fighting stance.
There's nothing else then scaring someone and being calm about it. You point it at the man and laugh to yourself. You look over at El and speak. "This guy, this guy was going to attack us-" You get interrupted by screaming. You look over at the man who's now screaming, spiders run up and down his arms. He continues screaming and starts jumping around. Scraping at his skin with his nails.
"Your a terrible dancer Axel." A girl's voice says, you look towards the sound and see a girl with pink hair walking down the steps, a black trench flapping behind her. Axel stops screaming as the spiders disappear.
"I told you, stay out of my head!" Axel says, smacking his head in between his head lightly.
"Threatening little kids are we now?" She asks, more of a statement then a question. You guess this is Kali. She gets off the steps. You and El begin to approach her.
"They know about us."
The dark haired woman hands the photo over to Kali, Kali looks up at the two of you after examining it for a few seconds. "How did you get this?" She asks, eyeing the two of you suspiciously.
"Mama." El answers, taking the photo back. She puts it in the leather bag.
"Your mother gave her this?" Kali looks over at you. You nod. She looks back at El.
"In her dream circle." El says, nodding.
"Dream circle? I think they're schizo's or something." Axel comments while scoffing. You look over at him, and he shuts up.
Kali finally notices the unsheathed knife in your right hand. You sheathe it and hand it to her. She puts it in her pocket.
"I saw you, in the rainbow room." Eleven tells Kali.
Kali steps closer, "What's your names?"
"Jane." Eleven says.
"Y/N but my friends call me Ten." You add
Kali stops in front of El and grabs her wrist lightly. Pulling back the jacket revealing the tattooed numbers 011 on it. El reaches for Kalis left wrist and pulls back the trench coat arm. Showing the numbers 008.
"Is he one of us?" Kali starts to speak, she gestures over towards you.
"Yes, yes I am." You answer sarcastically, rolling your eyes.
Kali hugs El, wrapping their arms around each other tightly. "Sisters." El says.
"Uh, what's that make me?"
-On The Roof-
El finishes telling the story to Kali, you lean back in the lawn chair. You yawn lightly, having barely got any sleep last night bothers you immensely.
"And you've been with this police-man for how long?" Kali inquires.
"Three hundred and Twenty seven days." El responds.
"This police-man thinks he can make a deal with these people to set you both free?"
"Yes. He says soon." El says, Kali nods following along with the conversation.
"He's naive then." Kali states, "To them we'll always be monsters. Do you understand?" El nods but you begin to object. El shoots you a glance, telling you to be quiet.
"What you both have, it makes you very special." She says.
"We know." You respond quickly, not trying to allow the girls sweet words to influence your mind.
"Do you have a gift?" El questions, the question makes you think about what you've been calling this 'Power' gift is a better term since power makes it seem as though it's a good thing. Which it's not since your past.
"Different. I can make people see or not see whatever I choose."
"Is that how you made that guy dance?" You inquire, genuinely interested in her power but still suspicious of her motives.
"Axel is not so fond of spiders so.."
"You made him see spiders?" El asks, almost as if she didn't see them. You look over at Kali and she doesn't make a gesture that would seem she let you see them. You keep the knowledge to yourself. Hoping it doesn't have anything to do with what Dr. Brenner made you do.
Kali nods, "But it doesn't have to be scary. It can be something beautiful too." Kali clenches her right fist and then flattens it. A bright rainbow butterfly flutters out around you and El. "The butterfly isn't real, I just convinced your mind it is. Go ahead and try to grab it."
El reaches out to grab it, but once her hand moves away it continues fluttering as you watch her. Noticing something weird about the illusion. When looking into El's eyes, the butterfly reflects off of it. So it doesn't only affect visuals, it can affect surroundings depending on the illusion?
Kali grabs the illusion into her hand and then releases it. The butterfly is gone, she looks between you and El.
El laughs, "Are you real?" She touches Kali's face with her pointer finger. They both laugh. The nice moment brings a smile to your face.
-In The Warehouse-
You and El are situated on a bed inside the warehouse in a room overlooking the bottom of it. Loud music blares from downstairs as Kali walks in with a clean red blanket. You and El both take off your jackets and lay them further back on the bed, making sure to keep the jackets as clean as possible.
Kali hands the blanket to you. You wrap it around you and El as Kali takes a seat in front of the two of you. Kali looks down at the two of you, a frown creasing her face.
El looks at Kali in concern. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing. It's like, I just feel whole.. now what you're here. Like a piece of me was missing. You understand right?" She answers.
"Yes." El responds, you think for a moment. It sounds like it's kind of like the feeling that you started to form over time for El.
"I think your mother sent you here for a reason. I think your mother knew to bring you here. I think, this is your home."
El POV
I look over a Ten, visible uncomfort on his face. I know that feeling, this shouldn't be where im at. Hawkins is home. It's where all My friends are. Even if they did replace me and Ten, they're still friends and they haven't seen us in over a year.
I reach out to touch Kali's hand, trying to avoid the question. She reaches out too and we begin to sob lightly. Both for different reasons though she doesn't know that.
"I-I need to go." Kali says from nowhere, she stands up and walks out of the door. Leaving without another word. Ten sighs and scoots back, leaning his head against the wall. "I'm so tired." He whispers to no one in particular. He closes his eyes.
I smile lightly to myself, I want to thank him. Thank him for coming back, thank him for coming with me even though he knew the risks. There's so many things.
I decided not to speak, and instead let him rest. I get the feeling tomorrow is going to be a long day.
Your POV
You open your eyes, expecting to see the room you had seen earlier but instead you see the radio which Hopper used to talk to you back at the house, but this time he speaks through it.
"Hey. I know I've been gone too long.." You can hear the sadness in his voice. The sincerity. "I just want to let you know. It's not because of you guys... and our fight. It's just. Something came up— I'm not gonna use excuses." He sighs. "I want to let you know I'm not mad at you.. I just—I'm sorry."
Is this how El feels and sees everytime she goes into the void to find someone. It's weird, a feeling of coldness and emptiness. Like you were staring into a deep hole.
A hand grabs your shoulder, pulling you out of the Void. You open your eyes and gasp slightly.
"Bad Dream?" Kali asks standing beside you with El at her side. You nod.
"What time is it?" You inquire, looking out at the windows reveals the inside of the warehouse with barely any light coming in from the moon outside.
"Late. It looks like you've slept well. Come, it's time for the two of you to actually meet the crew." You get up as Kali leads the two of you down the steps and into a large room underneath the room where you slept.
Axel walks in front of you as the three of you walk in. "We need some money now. I can't keep eating this garbage." Axel raises a white bag, supposedly holding food. Two people sit at the table, the messy haired blonde hair girl and the black haired one. The large buff man leans against the wall beside them as Axel approaches as you all walk in.
"That's Axel." Kali states, Axel starts to walk away once he sees you along with them.
"The spider Hater?" El questions. Everyone laughs lightly. Axel shakes his head in frustration.
Kali points over at the girl with messy blonde hair and a bow tie. "That's Dottie, our newest one. Like you two, she ran away from home."
"You mean the Loonie bin." Axel Chimes, taking a drink from a cup on the table.
Kali points over at the dark haired woman. "This is Mick, our eyes, our ears, our protector."
Kali nods over to the buff man leaning against the wall. "He's Funshine. Our warrior." He starts approaching the three of you after Kali says his name.
"Nice to meet you Miss Jane and Sir Ten." Funshine says, holding his right hand out for you to shake which you take.
"Pleasure is Mine Funshine." You respond, smiling politely.
"If you're looking for a number. You won't find one." Kali whispers to El, quiet enough to where you could barely hear.
"They're not like us." El says.
Kali takes a seat in the open recliner sitting beside the table. "No, not in that way. But in another, we're all outcasts."
"Freaks." Axel says, sitting on a lawn chair beside the table.
"Speak for yourself." Dottie responds.
"Society left them behind, hurt them, discarded them." Kali says, stopping Dotties and Axel from arguing.
"We were all dead but Kali saved us. Here." Sunshine points to his heart. "And here." He points to his head.
"Now. Don't get all Mushy on us now, Fun." Kali objects.
"Not Mushy. True." Funshine says.
"Listen. In this life, kid, you either roll over or fight back." Axel adds, taking another sip from his drink.
"We're all Fighters here." Mick says.
You look over at her, surprised that she spoke. "Fight who exactly?" You inquire, what do they mean?
Axel grabs a bag from behind his chair and hands it to Kali, she dumps it onto the table and out falls ID's with people's names and faces on them. "Everyone you see here is in someway responsible for what happened to us." Kali responds.
El picks up one of the ID's of a man and looks up at Kali. "You fight the bad men?" She asks.
"No, we give them a pat on the back." Dottie says, sarcastically.
"You kill them?" You question.
"They're criminals, we simply make them pay for their crimes." Kali answers.
El's face begins to pale, it seems she finally is beginning to see what Kali wants from us.
"What's wrong Shirley Temple, looks like you've seen a ghost." Axel says, looking over at El.
"Guess we all can't be fighters. At least we have one right?!" Dottie asks rhetorically. Gesturing towards you.
"I'm a fighter. I've killed." El answers, she probably means back at the school when you took out the bad men.
"Have YOU killed anyone?" You question Dottie, her eyes meeting the angry glint in yours.
"Kid your barking up the wrong tree." Dottie answers back, drawing a sarcastic sigh from you.
"Eleven, these men, were they bad?" Kali asks.
"They hurt us." El responds, you shake your head, this is stupid.
"And they still want to hurt you, to hurt us. We're just making the first move. Come." Kali gestures for the two of you to follow. She leads you outside and past multiple metal, rusted, pieces surrounding the back of this place.
"I was just like you once, keeping my anger inside. I tried to hide from it, but that pain festered." She says, continuing to talk as she leads you.
"Festered?" El asks, not knowing the meaning of the word. Kali stops and turns around to look at the two of you.
"It spread, until I finally confronted my pain, and I began to heal." She responds, she calls what she is now healed?
She turns around and continues walking. She hops off the curb and you stop in the middle of a rainy, glistening side road behind the warehouse. A rusted train cart lays further down the side road, it looks like it could weigh a lot.
"You see that train, I want you to draw it to us. One at a time though." Kali states, El trades glances with you, she raises her arms and begins to pull with her 'Gift.'
Her nose begins to bleed as she strains herself to push harder. The metal begins to creak but it barely moves an inch.
"I can't." She musters out, wiping blood from her nose.
"Ten, El said you lifted a van." Kali says.
"Yes." You respond, waiting on her to continue.
"The bad men were about to take you, and that made you angry right? I want you to focus on that, not on the train, not on the weight. Focus on something that angers you. Now channel it." She states, you raise your hand. Pushing with your gift.
The thought of when you were inside the school, the powerlessness of when they grabbed you and you couldn't fight back as Dr. Brenner held El, even in front of her face. She still fights back against him.
The metal begins to creak, the bottom of the train cart begins to lift steadily. You begin to think about that feeling when those men grabbed you.
The train cart comes speeding towards you, you let go and the train cart comes sliding towards you. Only stopping when you push against it with your gift. In the end, it stops directly in front of you. Kali and El look over at you in amazement. No, excitement.
You drop to your knees immediately after, not out of exhaustion but from the emotions overwhelming you.
"Yes! Good Job ten!" Mick yells, Axel, Funshine, and Dottie beside her. You shake your head, Kali crouches in front of you.
"How do you feel?" She asks, looking at you with uncertainty. You look over at her, then at El standing beside you.
"I- I don't feel good." You respond, El reaches her hand out for you to grab, which you take.
That was close, if you had pushed any harder it would've crashed right into you.
-inside the warehouse-
El POV
We all walk inside the warehouse, Kali turns right when we enter. She opens a metal door and steps inside, all of you follow her inside.
I look over at Ten, he looks drained. Eyes tired and a frown creases his face. He must've felt something when he used his power out of anger. Sadness and Pity scorch my stomach seeing him like that.
Kali brings us over to a board on the wall, pictures of people line every inch of it. "These are the badmen as you call them. All of them in some way have wronged us. The ones we believe are alive anyways. Know any?" Kali asks, looking beside her at me and Ten.
I examine the board, looking at all of the faces to see if I recognize them. There! A bald man's photo with bolded letters says, 'Retired' underneath it. I reach out and grab the paper, pulling the pin out. As soon as I touch the paper, memories from Mama come flooding back.
"Four-Fifty." Dr. Brenner says, The bald man turns the knob. The memory fades and I turn to Kali. Paper still in hand, "He hurt Mama."
Your POV
"His name is Ray Caroll, and he did way more than just hurt your Mama. The bad Men, like Ray, know about us. It's made them hard to track but not anymore." Kali says, eyeing El as she looks at the paper.
El nods, Kali leads the seven of you to the main room. Kali rummages around through some bags in the room and hands El a blindfold.
Funshine sits across from her on the chair of the table. Dottie sits on the floor while you, Mick, and Kali stand up. El sits across from us on the table.. She scrunches the paper up in her fist then rips it apart. Her anger and the way she's using it sends a wave of Nausea through you.
She takes off the blindfold, blood barely coming out from her nose. She nods.
After explaining the street, Dottie pulls out a phone book and begins to wrifle through it. She stops and puts her finger on the left page. "Gramery apartments. Washington and Bethel. That's gotta be it, right?" Kali takes the phone book from Dottie and examines it.
"Lilburn. Where's that?" She asks to no one in particular.
"About an hour east." Funshine answers.
"We don't even have a new ride." Mick says in an exasperated tone, she throws her hands into the air.
"So we swap plates, we have plates right?" Kali questions, looking over at Axel.
"Yeah." Axel says.
"It's too risky." Mick objects, turning away from Kali.
"Is it important to go right now?" You ask. El shakes her head.
"Yes, it is. Do you want this man who hurt her to run free and hurt some more kids? Hurt some more Mothers so they can't see their children? Besides, we have to give my sister and her new friend a memorable first day right?" Kali looks at everyone in their eyes.
"I'm in." Axel says.
"I guess I am too." Mick finishes talking in a noncommittal tone.
"I'm in for Sir Ten and Miss Jane." Funshine adds, Dottie nods.
Kali grabs El by her shoulder and leads her somewhere with Axel beside her. You try walking with them but Mick pushes you back. "Nope, I got something for you. Do you know what size clothes you wear?" She asks, you shake your head. She sighs and looks over at Funshine.
"Follow me." She says, she begins walking and the three of you follow her. She grabs a large, black, leather bag. She stops in front of another metal door beside the stairs. "This is the bathroom, There's some clothes in this bag. Come out when your done picking some." Mick pushes the bag into your hands, she opens the door and you step in.
You search through the bag, trying on clothes. Eventually after trying all the clothes, only one fits you that looks good.
A black leather jacket and black shirt, along with some blackish grey Adidas pants. You open the door and step out, Funshine, Dottie, and Mick look at you visibly surprised.
"You look. Good actually." Mick says, you smile lightly.
Dottie claps lightly. "Not good, perfect. That's how you actually look good in clothes. I think you should take some tips from him, Mick." Dottie states, Mick shoots Dottie a glance and she laughs out loud.
"Very nice sir." Funshine adds.
"I think They're done with El." Dottie says, listening to their voices from inside the upstairs room. The four of you walk up the steps as Axel turns the chair around.
El looks over at you, hair slicked back, eyelids slightly blackened with Makeup. "Bitchin." Kali says.
"Bitchin." El responds, smiling at all of you.
-Out Behind The warehouse-
All of you begin walking beside the warehouse, a tarp sits on something beside a wall. As you walk over the tarps, the form gets more distinctive. It looks like a car.
Axel pulls the tarp off of the car and throws it to the side, Funshine opens the door and allows you, Kali, and El get in first before letting the others in.
Mick starts the car and you begin driving through the roads and back streets of Illonois.
Axel puts in a rock music tape into the car's stereo. Mick blows smoke into his face as he begins throwing his head back and forth.
Kali puts different types of masks onto El's face and yours. Eventually she decides on a baby mask for El and a white, faceless mask for you. The strap wraps around the back of your head. Keeping it on but making it feel slightly uncomfortable.
The car stops at an empty gas station. All of the others begin piling out, leaving Mick driving the car. Kali opens the door to step out but you speak before she can.
"What are we doing?" You ask her, confused. She looks back at you, smiling menacingly. "Stocking up." She gets out of the car and the two of you follow her in.
The clerk leans onto the counter slightly. Barely looking at you as you all enter. Kali walks up to the counter and places her hands onto it in a non-threatening way. "You're bathrooms leaking." She says, nodding over to the door with the large words imprinted onto a slab saying 'Bathroom.'
He leaves the counter and walks in front of the door. "Shit!" He yells slightly. He opens the door and steps inside, trying to avoid as much leakage as possible. Obviously, it's an illusion and you can see right through it. Nothing is actually leaking.
Axel walks in front of the door in a joking manner. He raises a finger to his lips. "Alright contestants. We have about a minute and a half. Let's begin your.. supermarket Sweep!"
Everyone begins to split up, El walks to the apples, she picks up one before throwing it back inside. She walks over to the fridges and stuffs multiple boxes of Eggos into her hands. Kali and Dottie both walk over to an isle across from El and begin picking up things you can't see.
Axel hops over the container and puts boxes of cigarettes into a store bag. Funshine grabs a case of beer and walks to the counter in front of Axel.
Axel opens the cash register and starts taking the money and putting it into the bag.
The door to the bathroom opens and the man steps out. He clicks the safety off the pistol and aims it at Axel and Funshine.
"Hey, put that back or I'll blow your head off!" He yells, you step forward and raise your hands.
"Calm down." You say, Kali steps out from behind the Aisle and begins speaking to him.
"Darrel, your money isn't an issue, it's insured. We're only stealing from the war criminal billionaires who own this place." Kali states, the man steps forward and points the gun at her.
"I said stay back." He says, he steps forward again. Pushing Kali back.
"We're on the same side, I promise." She adds.
"Stay back!" He warns. You hear footsteps and look at the aisle beside you. El steps out and raises her hand, sending the man flying into the wall. Hard, but not hard enough to kill him.
"Damn." Dottie murmurs.
Sirens begin to echo through-out the store, "Shit. Let's go." Axel says, he opens the gas station door and you all run out into the van.
The tires screech and you're off into the night, following along the road to the man's apartment that El pointed out.
-at Rays Apartment-
El POV
The car stops, Mick and Axel turn around to look at you all, "We should case the place. Stick to the plan. We have time." Mick states.
"We also have her, can you look?" Kali asks, looking over at Me. I look over at Ten and he snores in the back seat.
"Yes." I nod, closing my eyes. A vivid image is painted in my head, a bald man sitting on a recliner watching T.V.
"He's watching Television."
"Is he alone?" Mick questions.
"I saw him, no one else." You answer.
"Let's do this." Funshine says, You shake Ten and he wakes up, eyes blood red.
"We're doing it." I say, saddened at his state. He nods, grabbing the mask from the floorboard. He straps it around his face and so does everyone else, including me.
"Meet you around back." Axel says to Mick, she nods.
After everyone finishes getting their masks on, Kali opens the van door and you all hop out. Mick pulls off and we enter the apartment buildings. I go to the door where I saw the bad man.
Axel tries opening the door lightly but it's locked. I use my gift and lift the chain off the lock. I nod and Axel opens the door.
The Television talking cuts off, I look over at Ten and he nods sluggishly. We all enter quietly. The bad man walks over to the TV as we approach him from behind.
"Hello Ray!" Kali says, the man jumps and turns around. Ray tries running past us but Funshine steps in front of him. "Sit down please." Funshine politely orders him.
"I said sit down." Funshine says, more forcefully as he pushes Ray into the recliner.
"Just, please. Take whatever you want." He begs, I look over at Ten and he doesn't move in the slightest. It's almost scary how he stands so still. Like a statue.
"Oh we will." Axel confirms.
"Where's your wallet?" Dottie questions.
"The bedroom. My jeans." He points to the hallway.
"Come on." Dottie says, she leads Axel to Ray's bedroom. Funshine sits against the wall in the hallway.
Kali takes off her mask, I do too. Ten hesitates before pulling his mask off.
Your POV
"Do you remember us?" Kali asks, Ray recoils and begins to shake in fear.
"Y-you." He points at you. "You were dead, how. How are you alive?!"
You look at him blankly, what is he talking about? Some of the memories before your escape from the lab are blurry.
Kali kicks Ray in the knee and he falls off the recliner. "Please, Please. Please don't kill me!" He begs for his life on his knees. A pang of regret and sympathy shoots through you.
"You hurt Mama!" El throws Ray against the wall, his head hits the wall lightly and he starts to bleed. He backs up against the wall and tears stream down his eyes.
"Please. I just did what he told me to do! He said she was sick!"
"You had a choice, you chose to follow a man who you knew was evil." Kali adds.
"No, wait, wait, I can help you find Brenner. I can take you to him." He tries to negotiate, pleading for his life in any way.
"Brenner is dead." You say, not quite believing yourself.
"No, he isn't. He trusts me. I can take you to him." Ray repeats.
"If he's alive, Jane will find him. Do it Jane, do it." Kali states, El begins to choke Ray out with her gift. All the bones in your body want to make it stop.
"El, Please. Stop." You beg, El looks over at you, tears forming in her eyes. She lets go of the man with her gift and steps back from him. The man starts gasping and coughing.
"We have a problem." Axel says.
"There's kids in the apartment." Dottie adds, the both of them standing in the hallway. Admiring the situation.
"What's wrong, did he show your mother mercy? No." Kali says. You feel the anger running through you.
"Stop trying to manipulate her into killing a man.. This isn't justice." You say neutrally, trying to avoid showing the manipulator any emotion.
"Murdering him is justice, do you really think someone like him deserves happiness? Do you think someone like him deserves to live?" She asks loudly, she pushes you, angering you slightly as she speaks again. "Fine." She says in finality.
"Please, No." Ray begs, still coughing on the ground.
"We have to go guys." Axel comments, trying to avoid adding himself into this conversation.
"Jane, do it now!" Kali yells, El shakes her head.
Kali takes a pistol out of her waistband and aims it at Ray, before she can even turn off the safety. You send the gun flying out of the glass door with your gift. Glass shatters onto the floor.
Kali looks at you as if she despises you, "We have to go, Now!" Axel yells, the five of you run out of the apartment and down the steps.
Axel leads you out of the backdoor and to the van. "Get in, hurry!" He opens the vans back door for you and you all hop in.
As soon as Axel gets in the passenger door, you screech off into the night.
"If you want to show Mercy, that is your choice. But you don't take away mine. Ever." Kali tells you, you shake your head and sigh.
-Back at The Warehouse-
Everyone besides you, El, and Kali are downstairs. Kali sits on the bed, leaning against the wall while you and El stand in front of her. Your backs to the doorway.
The pink lights from outside send a dim shade of pink onto everyone's skin as you all look at each other.
"I was once like you, you know. I'm.. I'm the way I am because I see my past mistakes in you." Kali states, frowning.
"They were children!" You respond, raising your voice.
"Does that excuse that man's excuse that man's sins? Were we also not just children?" She responds, the anger rubs against the surface inside you.
"I remember the day I came to the rainbow room and you were gone, Jane. When I was strong enough, I used them to escape. I ran far away. And it was there I found a place to hide. A family, a home, just like you and your friends. Like you and the policeman, but they couldn't help me." Kali gulps and looks down at the ground.
"So eventually I lost them, too. I decided to play the part. To stop hiding. To use my gifts against the people who hurt us. You're now faced with the same decision, Jane. Will you take me up or will you follow along with your friends' ideals. If you believe me, you can stop hiding. You can fight them again." Kali states, you shake your head. Eleven wouldn't choose murder right?
"Fight who?" Jane asks.
"The man who calls himself our papa."
"Brenner is dead." You say, you watched the Demogorgan jump on him.
"That man from tonight disagreed." A familiar voice says from behind you. You shoot around, Dr. Brenner stands in the doorway, hands behind his back.
"He's not real." You turn around and look at Kali, she just smiles at you. You turn back around as El begins walking toward Brenner.
"All this time? And you still haven't looked for me? Why? Because you thought I was dead? Or you were afraid of what you might find?" Dr. Brenner says, stepping closer to El.
"Go away." El tells him, he continues walking closer. El looks back at you, visibly distressed.
"You're manipulating us to get your way. Do you think this will help you?" You ask, almost yelling at her. Kali shakes her head and continues smiling.
"You have a terrible wound, the both of you, and it's festering. Do you remember what that means? To rot." Brenner explains, El falls backward. Brenner leans in front of her.
"The same thing will happen to you as it did for the other children." Dr. Brenner adds.
"Get out of my head." El whispers. You turn back to Kali, this needs to stop.
You slam your gift into Kali, stunning her just as El begins to scream and all the lights inside of the warehouse flicker. You look back as El begins to sob, Dr. Brenner is gone, but at what cost.
You run to El and wrap your arm around her in a comforting way. Kali gets off the bed and crouches in front of you. The smile you saw earlier is gone from her face.
"This isn't a prison Jane. You always have a choice. You can go back to your policeman or stay, and avenge your mother." Kali tells her, you shoot daggers at Kali and she doesn't react in any way.
You could kill her, you could kill all of them. Should you?
"Let us heal our wounds together." Kali adds, she stands back up and walks out of the room and downstairs into the bottom of the warehouse.
El wipes the tears from her eyes and begins to quiet down, she leans into your shoulder. Closing her eyes.
You sit like that for a long time. A loud bang comes from downstairs, Kali runs up and grabs the two of you by your shoulders. "Come, stay quiet." You all run downstairs, Everyone looks at the three of you confusingly.
"Everyone, Shut up!" Kali orders, everyone stops what they're doing and stops talking. The side door of the warehouse shoots open, men with assault rifles step inside. El grips your shoulder tightly as they begin to move through-out the room, shining their flashlights everywhere.
They walk up the steps to the room where you and El sleep. Kali motions for you all to come and you go out the side door.
"Hey!" A man shouts, police cars surround the outside of the warehouse. All of you run to the van as Axel pulls a pistol from his waistband and begins to fire at the police officers.
You make it to the van, "Do something, someone!" Axel pleads. You think for a moment.
You know the main gist of how Kali's powers work. Theoretically, at least. You just have to convince everyone's minds that the illusion is real and paint it in your mind. If everything you've learned about your ability so far is true. You should be able to use Kali's power. You don't know whether or not Kali will keep her power but its worth the chance.
You think of a giant metal wall, then of everything spreading. Like dominoes. The bullets stop and Kali looks over at you, blood begins to come out of your nose profusely. Your not used to this power so your body can barely handle it.
"W-what." She mutters, her eyes wide in disbelief.
Dottie opens the van door and everyone gets in. You and El stand outside. Kali reaches her hand out for El to grab.
El shakes her head, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. We have to go back. Our friends need us." Tears brim in El's eyes as Kali begins to realize the choice El chose.
"We have to go." You say firmly.
"This isn't the time for a talk, we need to go now!" Axel yells, the wall you created begins to crack and you push yourself to keep it up.
"Hey! That kids wall is gone we have to move!" Dottie screams in fear.
"Your new powers Ten you gained them for a reason, you both were sent here for a reason, we were supposed to be together." Kali makes a final plea, El shakes her head.
"I'm sorry." El whispers, you grab El by her shoulder and lead her beside the van into an alleyway beside the warehouse.
"Goodbye." You murmur, rubbing the blood off onto your wet jacket sleeve.
"Jane, Jane, Ten!" Kali yells, you let go of the wall and immense relief comes over you. The van screeches off into the night.
