Chapter 5: Dig Dug
Your head rests against the Semi-Truck window, it's cold, but your right cheek warms it. El squeezes closer next to you, the Semi's heat certainly not enough to keep her warm.
You and El decided to take a visit to Terry Ives, or El's mom. She barely convinced you to leave after the accident that happened last night, but she was going to go with or without you.
You both catch a ride on a Semi-Truck to Terri's street. The two of you squeeze next to each other. Finding comfort in knowing that at least there's a resemblance of familiarity in the unknown lands.
The Semi-Truck stops after thirty minutes of driving and the man looks over at the two of you sitting in the passenger seat. "This is it. Five-One-Five Larrabee, right?"
"Yes," You answer, El opens the Semi-Trucks passenger door and holds the door open as you hop out.
"You better apologize to your mama alright? Must be scared to death. How long has it been?" He asks, El looks at the man blankly.
"Long time." She says and nods, you almost forgot. You reach inside the truck and grab the leather bag containing all of the documents. El closes the truck's door and it pulls off.
The two of you follow along a gravel path with dirt layering over it. You walk along the path for about two minutes till you reach a house. El and you step onto the porch, giving each other shared looks of worry.
You look around, the place is really well kept. The person living here must have a lot of free time. El sighs and knocks on the door.
"Go away, I'm not interested!" A woman shouts on the other side of the door. El doesn't respond and knocks on the door harder than before.
The door creaks open, a woman's face on the other side. The chain on the other side holds the door closed. "Listen kids, I don't want your thin mints."
"Thin mints?" You question, what does she think you are? Street vendors?
"Or your religious mumbo jumbo. Whatever you're selling, I ain't buying." The lady slams the door shut again.
El focuses on the door and you listen as the chain lock begins to release. The door opens from the breeze.
"I want to see Mama." El says, her nose bleeding.
"I- I don't know if you want to." The lady responds sadly. She's obviously scared but you guess she assumes you have a good reason if you already went this far.
The lady leads you down the hall and looks into a room then back at the two of you in uncertainty.
"Rainbow. Three to the right. Four to the left. Breathe Sunflower." The woman repeats to herself as she rocks in a chair.
"Mama?" El asks, stepping forward into the room. "Mama, Can you hear me?" El walks to the woman and kneels on one knee in front of her.
"Mama, it's me Jane." El says, Your surprised at her saying her birth name, but what else could she say to get through to her Mom. El rests her hand on top of her mothers in a loving way.
"What's wrong with her?" You inquire, looking back at the lady who spoke through the door. She leans against the open frame and frowns, crossing her arms.
"You might want to sit down for this." She says, you and El both get up and follow the lady as she walks into the kitchen. Four wooden seats surround a dark black wood table. You take a seat beside El as the lady sits across from you.
"I need to understand first, where have you been Jane. All this time?" El doesn't answer and looks toward her mother.
"A police-man and a woman came looking for you two last year." The woman says and sighs.
"She won't get better." El says to no one in particular.
"They don't think so, no, but she's not in any pain. She's stuck in there, like a long dream." The lady hesitates. El finally turns towards her.
"A good dream?" El asks.
"I hope so."
El sighs and you see the sadness and frustration all mixed onto her facial features. Like she can't decide on which one that she really feels.
"Is it the same dream?" You finally speak up, the lady turns to you for the first time.
"We don't know, sometimes she says different things, but usually it's the same."
El begins to cry softly. You understand how she feels though. You put your hand on her shoulder and the lady touches El's hand.
"She always believed you were out there and that you'd come back one day. Come home."
"Home?" El grips the ladies hand. Eleven sniffles, and wipes away tears.
"Yeah home, do you want to see the room she had ready when you were born?" The lady asks, El nods solemnly and you shrug, just going with the flow seems to have worked this far.
The lady leads you upstairs into a room, the walls are painted white but have a yellow glow from a small lamp.
There's a crib placed near a window on the other side of the room, next to the crib is a shelf filled to the brim with toys and stuffed animals. Actually, the more you look. The more toys you notice. It seems like the room has anything a young girl would want.
El walks over to the crib and reaches in, grabbing a stuffed teddy bear. She sniffles again and speaks, "Pretty." She whispers.
You hadn't even noticed the lady behind you slowly approaching. She crosses her arms. "I can get a bed for the two of you and you can stay here with me for a while, how's that sound?" She proposes, it feels like your heart drop. You don't want to leave Mike and The rest of the party alone. You thought they needed you.
El nods, and you sigh. You want to object but don't as it would be rude since it isn't your decision to make.
"I want to help you, I really do. But to do that, I need you to talk to me. Doesn't have to be now, doesn't have to be today, but when you're ready okay?"
"Okay." El looks back at the lady, you follow her gaze but don't see her look at the lady, but at the flickering light in the hallway.
El walks past the woman and into the hallway. "Oh yeah, that happens sometimes. Old house, bad wiring. If you'd ask my Aunt Shirley she'd say it's haunted." The lady says, You follow behind El as she walks, she looks to her left as the other light begins to flicker. Then another, You and Becky if you remember correctly. Follow El as she walks.
El goes down the steps and stops in the kitchen. "Honey, it's just the wiring." Becky says, glancing at the flickering lights. The lights turn on for a moment, staying on "See?"
Almost on cue, as she says that, the lights begin flickering once again, you almost laugh out-loud at the comedy of it.
"No." El responds, she looks out of the kitchen and down the hall where her mother is. The both of you begin to follow her again.
El stops in front of her mother and kneels beside her. "It's Mama, she knows I'm here." El's mother has blood dripping out from under her nose, El brings a finger up to her nose and wipes it away.
"I don't know how would that wor-" you get interrupted by the TV changing channels until it reaches a static one.
"She wants to talk." El states.
You reach into the leather bag and hand El her black blindfold. Becky brings up two chairs for you and her to sit in. El leans back against the TV's stand as she sits on the ground.
"If you talk to Terry, can you tell her I love her very much and that I'm sorry I didn't beli-" Becky gets cut off by you.
"Quiet." You tell her.
"Yeah, sorry." Becky apologizes and begins biting her right thumb nervously.
El almost immediately begins whispering to herself. Her nose begins to bleed and she starts to huff.
"El?" You ask, El rips off her blindfold and gasps for what seems like air. What happened? You crouch beside her and rub her shoulder lightly until she calms down.
