Chapter 2: Trick Or Treat Freaks
You start walking down the Pumpkin Patch field, the cold sending shivers down your legs. Your body is freezing to its core, as your knuckles turning red and nose getting stuffy you look farther down and see a house. Next to the house is a giant sign that's unintelligible from this far away.
You start to walk closer to the house, it's white but autumn leaves rest on the roof. A complacent car sits beside the house, a black tarp draped over it for the fall season. Thousands of leaves sit upon it.
A car pulls up to the house, the man only a blur from this distance. "Help!" You yell, the words feeling foreign in your mouth.
A man slides out of the car and starts walking towards you, from his posture he's reluctant and cautious of you.
He wears a green coat with fur on the inside and wears a green cap. You continue walking towards him hesitantly.
You meet the man head-on, his rough gaze turning to one more sympathetic he puts his right hand on your shoulder. Your gaze twists to the hand deadpan, like a fish. "Kid. What the hell are you doing back here? It's almost nine o' clock. Halloween's going to be here in three days. Shouldn't you be home?"
"I- It's almost Halloween?" You ask, The man looks over at you and raises an eyebrow.
"You di-" The man doesn't get to finish, as Hopper comes up behind you. Your heart catches in your throat, your body's fight or flight activating. "Sorry about that. Kids love playing pranks these days." His voice sounds deeper then last year, and happier; but his tone isn't one of warmth.
"Mist-" You begin to speak, to try to argue. He betrayed you, Eleven's gone. You twist on your heels, preparing to dash away from the man.
He grabs you by your sleeve, his hand almost slipping away because of the goo. He begins to drag you away as the man speaks. "Yeah, just don't let him back on this property or I will call the cops." He finishes as your backs turn towards him. You exhale deeply, vision blurring as your eyes begin to fade in and out.
"He's trespassing." The man adds.
Hopper nods and smiles sarcastically, dragging you towards the right. His car is still on, purring in the fall wind. When you both make it to the car, Hopper opens the passenger door and slides a towel over the seat then allows you to get in. He walks around the front of the car to the driver door and gets in slowly, making sure not to knock over the alcohol in the middle cuphold. You wipe the end of the towel over your face, to at least clean yourself a little.
"How are you alive?" The chief looks over at you and asks.
You find yourself picking at the dirt beneath your nail nervously. "I- I don't know—" You admit slowly, not sure if the words can even be said properly. "Where's Eleven?" You question, stopping the nervous act as your eyes meet.
Hopper shakes his head and starts driving the car, pulling it onto a rough dirt road. "She's.. she's okay." He says, knuckles turning white against the steering wheel as he looks forward. You sigh in relief, body dropping back into the seat in the act of relief. He glances at you once he realizes your not responding and smiles lightly. "What?"
You shrug. "I missed you." You murmur, turning to look forward. He sighs. "You smell like shit. When we get to the house, take a shower."
"Oh I smell bad?" You say grimacing once you raise the jacket to your nose. "What house though?"
"Where me and El are staying." Hopper responds, you sigh in relief, thank god it's a house and not a small cabin on the outskirts of Hawkins.
"You're lucky I found you when I did." Hopper says gruffly.
"How did you find me?" You question, looking over at him as you rest your head on the window.
"El said you were at a Pumpkin Patch field. There's only a few of them in Hawkins." He answers. "
You nod, letting the quiet overtake the ride, it's peace, real peace, not the sleep you were experiencing; you feel at home.
"I'm glad your alive Ten." He adds, his eyes starting to gloss. "I didn't wanna be the cause of another kids death." He finishes, leaving you in stunned silence. "I'm sorry."
You raise an eyebrow, the man's sign of weakness a sign of trust as well. "It's okay." You murmur in response, closing your eyes gently as you rest your head against the window; your throat feels scratchy and a deep thirst overtakes your exhausted body.
"We're here." He stops in front of an old wooden cabin, its one floor and looks run-down.
Your body shakes nervously, you finally begin to worry about how you look, a single look in the right passenger mirror reveals a disheveled thirteen year old. You reach down at the end of the towel and drag it over your face, taking some of the blood and goo off. Your vision finally twists to the hou-
This is not a house.
"This isn't a house, this is a Cabin." You say quietly.
He stares at you for a moment before sighing. You get out of the car, grabbing the towel from the seat. You wait for Hopper to get out of the car before you start walking up to the cabin.
"Watch out, there's a trip-wire up here." You watch as Hopper steps over an almost invisible wire. You step over it and follow close behind him; hoping there's no other booby traps.
Hopper steps onto the wooden porch, the steps groaning under his weight. He lets you step onto the porch before he opens the door.
"Ten!" You hear a girly voice yell, you watch as El runs towards you quickly, almost tackling you off the porch as she wraps you up.
"You finally have hair." You joke, rubbing the side of her face lovingly. You've obviously grown now because El has to look up into your eyes. She's still small, her body frail but seemingly still has good strength, evident by her almost tackling you.
"You too." She touches the top of your head lightly. Her fingers curling in a pattern in your hair. You didn't even notice that your hair had grown, it feels weird, it's the first time touching someones hair.
It's healthy, you can feel it as you wrap your left hand through your own hair.
El lets go of you and steps back, she's a little smaller then you still.
"Here." Hopper says, stepping in front of El. you didn't even notice that he moved. He pushes a pile of clothes into your hands. "Shower." Hopper points to a wooden door to the left of another door.
You nod, "We can talk more when I get out of the shower." You tell her, flashing a dirty smile at her. You walk over to the door Hopper pointed at and step inside.
You stand there for a moment, remembering all of that stuff that led to this moment. You slowly get undressed and turn on the water. You listen as you get into the shower.
Eleven POV
"Thank you," I say as I walk to the Kitchen.
Hopper sighs, "It's only temporary till we can make sure you both won't be kidnapped by those people."
I nod, The bad people. The two of you are almost safe. Soon, Hopper keeps saying.
"Besides, I need to go back to that Pumpkin Patch field, I have to figure out what's going on with that gate too."
I listen to Hopper, nodding as he finishes. "Yes, smart." As I agree, the water begins running in the shower. Maybe we can go trick or treating, he allowed us to go to the snowball.
I open up the fridge and grab a box of Eggos. "What did I say about the Eggos?" I sigh and turn around to look at Hopper.
"He needs to eat."
Your POV
You shower for about ten minutes, washing your hair and body before getting out, you quickly get dressed. You put on the black long sleeved shirt, white jogging pants and socks.
You pick up your clothes and place them on the side of the tub, the towel underneath it to stop it from dripping anywhere.
You exit the bathroom and the smell of waffles wafts into your nose. You look over into the Kitchen and see Hopper teaching El how to make waffles on the stove. As you walk closer, you notice the smell of Eggos.
"Smells good." You say, smiling at the two of them cooking. You lean over the counter near the table as you watch them cook.
It's smart, she's learning how to make eggos the day you arrive.
"Almost done." El responds, looking over at you while smiling brightly. You finally smile showing some teeth, you finally got the chance to brush them.
She takes the pan off the stove and slides one eggo each onto three plates. She puts a little syrup on each of them.
She hands you and Hopper forks. You take a bite and take in the delicacy of the food. "It's- this is so good." You say after you finish.
"Yeah, Good job El." Hopper adds.
El nods and smiles, she starts eating her own as you begin to drift off as you eat. Soon enough you close your eyes and sleep overtakes you.
You don't know how long you're asleep for. You gasp and wake up, you look around, you sleep on a pile of blankets beside a bed that El sleeps peacefully in. You put your head back down on a blanket and begin to fall asleep.
After Three Days
The three days pass quickly, most of it is spent watching TV with El though. You asked her if she'd want to watch TV after breakfast but she said she had something to do.
So, now you sit on the recliner watching TV but your attention turns to El as she leaves her room with a sheet overtop her head. This must've been the thing.. You laugh quietly as she stumbles through the living room and into the kitchen where Hoppers at. You stand up and turn off the Television and follow behind El; Eager to learn of her plans.
Hopper sits over the stove cooking eggs. He turns around to see El looking back at him through the sheet. He exhales in surprise momentarily and turns back to cooking the eggs.
"Ghost." El says from under the sheets, as she wobbles closer to Hopper.
"Yeah I see that." Hopper responds.
"Halloween."
"Sure is." He says as he puts three plates on the table and puts the eggs on each. "But right now, it's breakfast. Come on, let's eat."
"They wouldn't see us."
"Us?" You question from behind her, making the ghost turn to look at you for a moment.
"Who wouldn't see?" Hopper asks, He places the pan back onto the stove.
"The Bad Men." El adds.
"Wait, can we go trick or treating?" You question cheerfully, turning to look at Hopper.
"What are you two talking about?" Hopper questions.
"Trick Or Treat." El states.
"You want to go Trick-Or-Treating?" He asks, turning to look over at El.
She stands there, looking at him through the sheet. Confirming it. He shakes his head.
"You both know the rules, you especially El."
"But they wouldn't see us."
"Yeah, especially if we wear the sheets." You add to the cause, hoping to convince him.
"Ten." He says abruptly, looking at you. "It isn't safe, especially for you."
"Please." El pleads through the white cloth ghost.
"I don't care." Hopper says, pushing her away slowly.
"B-But they wouldn't see." She repeats.
Hopper bends down to El's level and begins to speak. "No, Listen. I don't care. Going out there is a risk, ghost or not, Ten or not, we don't take risks. All right? Their stupid and.."
"We're not stupid." El growls, he nods.
"Exactly. Now you take that off and sit down, your food is getting cold. You too Ten, come eat."
She takes off the sheet and throws it to the ground. You sit down on the other side of the table. Leaning against the wall, El sits on the other side and Hopper sits on the open part of the table.
You shake your head and begin to eat, El leans against the wall and watches Hopper.
Hopper sighs and grabs his forehead in frustration. "All right. How about, I get off early and I buy us a bunch of candy, and we can sit around getting fat while watching scary movies? How's that for a compromise?"
"Compromise?" El asks softly.
You smile softly at her her soft words, sounding so compassionate.
"In-between." You answer.
"In-between?" She questions, glancing at you. You nod slowly.
"How about that's the word for the day? C-O-M-Promise. Half-Way happy." Hopper adds.
"By 5-1-5?" El asks hopefully.
"5:15, Yeah, sure."
"Promise for us?" You ask, more for El than yourself.
"Yes. Promise." He nods.
She shrugs her shoulders lightly. "Half-way happy." She grabs her fork.
You start to laugh. She looks over at you as you start to cough from the food and laughing.
Hopper smiles and pats El's head and yours. He left soon after, leaving the two of you watch TV and play games together. Sometimes you talk about what happened after El couldn't find you. She went to Mike's house and was almost found out so she had to run into the woods to hide.
The talking and games take up almost all of the day and soon enough it's night-time, and you wouldn't have even noticed if it wasn't for El pointing it out on the Stoves clock. The clock reads 6:50.
She walks over to a radio thing as beeps begin to play out. She waits for the beeps to end before speaking.
"He says he's going to be late." She says as she turns away from the radio. She turns it off and starts pacing around the room.
She grabs a blindfold from her room and switches it over to a static channel. "Who are you going to look at?" You ask.
"Mike." She says as she wraps the blindfold around her eyes.
"Mike? Why Mike?" You question jealously.
The lights begin to flicker and you suppose that's a sign to end the conversation.
She takes off the blindfold after about five minutes and turns over to you. "He's been trying to reach us for a long time. I can't do anything though." She says, her eyes begin to gloss and she starts to Sob.
She leans into you. So you wrap your arm around her shoulder as she cries. You pat her shoulder as she sobs into your shoulder. It warms your heart and you push her even closer to you.
