Introduction
The second Kate passes the town line her senses spiral into action, white noise taking over. She tried her best not to wreck the old truck she's driving, not willing to put its passenger into danger.
"Kate! Watch where you're going!" A young girl points to the road ahead, panic filling her tone.
Kate's mind snaps into focus and she corrects the position of the wheel so the car is safely on the road once more. Her blonde hair hangs messily in a haphazard bun that's now fallen to her neck.
"I'm sorry Abby... I-" Before she could continue her sentence the younger girl with jet black hair interrupts.
"It happened again, didn't it?" Kate could tell Abby was worried just from the tone of voice she used.
She tightens her grip on the steering wheel, knuckles turning a visible white. "Yes..."
Abby knew that that was the end of the conversation. When the subject of Kate's abilities arose it was almost always shot down by the older girl. She had learned when to hold her tongue.
The drive through town was relatively calm as the two sat in silence. Every once and a while one would tap their fingers in a steady rhythm or change the station of music playing. For someone looking in, they would seem like two normal siblings... They couldn't ever be anything close to that.
"That's your new school." Kate pointed out as they lulled past the large building.
"Let's see, this will be the 15th school in 4 years. Should be a world record." Abby's blue eyes flicked away in annoyance and the older girl next to her tensed.
A large sigh echoed in the car. "Ab, you know that I'm sorry about your parents. I did all that I could but this is going to be a fresh start for us! If things go well then this will be that last school you go to before college."
Abby didn't respond and shifted her body so she was facing away from Kate. In the end, she didn't need to speak to her "sister" to know what she was thinking. Sometimes the lack of words meant more...
Another 15 minutes pass before they pull up to a small and quaint house near a forest's edge. You could tell the building had been through some rough times, but the price was too good to pass up especially for the girls budget. Kate quickly stopped the car's engine and stepped out onto the dirt below.
All at once the visions came: dark and horrifying. A young boy with dark hair came into view before quickly disappearing. He was terrified. Awful
screams of women and men could be heard from the house itself. Some were human and others seemed darker, more like a beast.
"Kate?" At the sound of Abby's voice, she was snatched away from the scene unfolding before her.
"Hm?" Brown eyes met blue and Kate flashed the young girl a hesitant smile.
"What did you see?"
Her smile faded as she looked away. "Nothing... Just the old owners. They seem like--nice people."
Abby obviously didn't buy the story but she rolled her eyes and walked forward to the door of the house. It was crusted shut but she slammed her body into it and fell forward as it wrenched open.
"Got it!" She shouted from the inside and Kate laughed quietly as she moved to get her bags.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a figure in the distance. She raised her hand up to her face to block out the sun, seeing that it was a young man. She raised her hand and timidly waved.
The figure had stopped and she could feel confusion radiating off him. Kate stepped forward to get a better view, his toned muscles lit by the sunlight. With a clear view of the new man she could barely breath. He was breathtaking, literally.
With the blink of an eye he was gone. Maybe she just imagined him, or maybe she flashed again and he walked away. Oddly enough, she couldn't seem to get a read on him like she can with others.
"What are you staring at?!" Abby shouted from the front steps.
Kate turned slowly to face her, waving the man from her mind. "I just thought I saw something.. Must've been a shadow."
"Well get your ass in here and help me move!" Her dark hair shifted as she turned and stalked back in the house.
Kate sighed and looked one last time towards the road. "Billy." The name came to her like a title wave, emotions flying with it. Darkness, sadness, but deep down hidden under all that she could feel compassion.
"Kate!!!"
"I'm coming!" She snapped and turned away, fighting the magnetic pull that urged her towards the street.
She's been there for less than a day and Hawkins was becoming the strangest place she'd ever seen.
