Chapter 4

Party time has finally come! Lizzie has invited about twenty people to mingle all together and admire her house. She takes pride for finally moving away from her mother, claiming that she's always been a strong-willed, independent woman.

After chatting with some of the other invitees, she wants to check on the Duncan sisters, believing that at least one of them has already shown up. However, she can't see them in the crowd.

The same can be said about Liah, who has just arrived but, as she bumps into a couple of snotty girls, doesn't see any trace of Lizzie in the surroundings. This is why she has to text her. However, it looks like Lizzie has something else in mind...

Conversation between Liah and Lizzie

Liah: Liz, where are you?

Lizzie: I can't tell you...

Liah: Oh, yeah, you're going to tell me or else I'm gonna look for you.

Lizzie: You don't need to... :)

Liah: Lizzie, you're being creepy right now. Where the heck are you?

Lizzie: Liah, don't worry. See you.

Lizzie's game of hide-and-seek, other than exhausting, is also annoying to Liah. The latter, at first, decides to keep looking for her but stops as soon as she hears her phone ring. A new text message is incoming. Unfortunately, it comes from the person she wouldn't want to hear from especially now. Lilla.

Conversation between Lilla and Liah

Lilla: Where the fuck are you?

Liah: Lilla, please, I don't have time to talk to you.

Lilla: Oh, yeah, you're going to find time to talk to me instead. Tell me where you are and that's it.

Liah: None of your fucking business, Lilla.

Lilla: Mind your manners, sis.

Liah: Seriously, get a fucking grip!

Lilla: Where the hell are you?

Liah: Why are you asking again? I'm busy, anyway, so let me go.

Lilla: Answer my question or I'll keep texting.

Liah: I'm at Lizzie's. Now let me go.

Lilla: No way. You're going to explain why the hell you're at that party. You were supposed to help me sorting stuff in the basement instead.

Liah: That's all your fucking stuff, Lilla. You can sort it on your own.

Lilla: No, I can't. Come back home and help me, or I'm gonna go there and drag you to the basement, okay?

Liah doesn't bother answering Lilla's latest message and prefers enjoying the party. She doesn't even care anymore about her sister's shenanigans. As soon as she finds a can of beer on a table, she picks it, opens it and takes a sip. When she's about to pick the second sip, however, she hears the phone ringing again.

"I hope it's not Lilla again!" she exclaims out of frustration and realizing that Lizzie hasn't showed up yet at her own party. How is that even possible? Trying to repress that thought, she checks her phone. It's a notification from Instagram. Someone liked her latest picture.

Yet, it's not time for her to gloat about her popularity on Instagram. She must get to know where Lizzie is. This is why she shoots her a quick text message.

Conversation between Liah and Lizzie

Liah: Liz, we have a problem.

Lizzie: You have a problem, Liah. I'm fine.

Liah: What do you mean?

Lizzie: What do you mean?

Liah: Can you just stop repeating what I text?

Lizzie: Can you explain yourself better?

Liah: Lilla has just texted me.

Lizzie: And?

Liah: She was furious! She doesn't like that we're at your party instead of sorting things in the fucking basement with her.

Lizzie: Sorting things in the basement? What do you mean?

Liah: Well, tidying up and cleaning, I guess...

Lizzie: Have you thought that she could be hiding something there?

Liah: Hold on, what do you mean?

Lizzie: Wow, Liah, you're so repetitive. Let me explain it better, don't you think that her pathetic search for help just to clean up the basement isn't a little too sketchy?

Liah: Well, no. She's just being overbearing.

Lizzie: I think it is.

Liah: Why?

Lizzie: I don't know. Just promise you'll be careful around her, okay?

Liah: Well, I never keep promises.

Lizzie: Just promise, okay?

Liah: Okay, if you insist, I'll be more careful. Now, can I get back to that can of beer?

Lizzie: Enjoy yourself.

At last, Lizzie is mixing and mingling at the party, having fun and showing her house, as well as her outfit off. She's wearing a sleeveless bright pink dress that makes her look like a siren. Her hair is collected in a perfectly tidy bun.

Everyone has eyes only for her, except for Lanai, who has spent most of her time at the party on the sidelines. She hasn't talked to anyone or enjoyed the booze at all. She just wants to make sure that Lizzie isn't plotting anything suspicious.

This is why she's voicing her thoughts to Leanne. By text message, of course.

Conversation between Lanai and Leanne

Lanai: Hey, Leanne, you're at the party, right?

Leanne: Yeah.

Lanai: How is it?

Leanne: Cool.

Lanai: That's it?

Leanne: I expected a lot better.

Lanai: Yeah, it's just Lizzie's pathetic attempt of self glorifying.

Leanne: Come on, Lanai, don't be too harsh. She has worked her ass off for days to make sure this party is a hit.

Lanai: Really? Are you defending her? Seriously?

Leanne: Think it this way, you could be stuck with Lilla.

Lanai: I hate when you're right.

Leanne: I get it. Now, I think I'll go and find a drink. I'm tired of moping here like an idiot. Nothing against you, of course.

Lanai: As if I even care.

Leanne: You know you love me, Lanai...

Lanai: Don't make me say things I might regret.

Leanne: Too late...

Lanai: See you.

Leanne: Bye.

Back home, things are anything but easy for Lilla. She's tired of having to do everything by herself. She's fed up of having four ungrateful sisters who don't listen to her. If they can't do what she asks them, then she has to resort to making sure they do her way.

This is why she scrolls through her contacts to find her parents' numbers. She first calls her mother, but receives no answer. The same happens with her father. They're obviously busy. This means that she's on her own.

She needs to devise the perfect plan, the one that will give her sisters a well-deserved lesson and, at the same time, make her get away with what she does without consequences and without anyone realizing her intentions.

This is why, before calling anyone, she writes a note on her phone:

"Dear sisters, I know we've had a rough time lately, but don't you think it's time to sort it out? After all, we're supposed to back each other, not to backstab each other—pun intended. So, why don't you come over and we discuss together? I hope you come. See you soon."

She grins as she's done writing. She saves the note, but decides not to send it straight away. She wants to create some tension and throw the bomb whenever they expect it the least.
