Chapter 7

"When you finally let go of the past, something better comes along" - anonymous.

Parker's POV:

I have been in detention many a times at my old school. So, I just walk out of the class without worrying much.

I look at Melissa. She looks sad.

By the looks, I take an easy guess that she has never been scolded by the teachers and detention is the last word she can even think of.

A smile automatically forms on my face.

"Why are you smiling now? Aren't you embarrassed?" she asks.

"No. What's there to be embarrassed about? By the way, it was you who made that lame joke about a bug on my face and you must be sorry for me." I say teasingly.

"Oh please! I came to your rescue. I apologized as well. But, the way you jumped off the bench was very funny. There was no bug in the first place but you were scared as if it was some huge insect!" she says laughing.

I just stare at her. She laughs wholeheartedly. She looks pretty.

I feel happy that I could make her laugh.

She catches me staring and stops laughing. She immediately comes back to her usual stern and gloomy expression.

"I gotta go" she says and runs away.

I look at her perplexed.

I hear the bell ringing and go towards the History class. Melissa doesn't share this class with me.

I don't see her till the end of the day. She must be cramming in the library.

"Should I go there?  Anyway we have the detention together, so I can have a chat with her over there." I think.

It's 4 pm in the evening and I have detention in few minutes. People start going home and eventually, the school becomes empty.

I wait for Melissa to show up so that we could go to the detention room together ,but she is nowhere to be seen.

Without further delay, I go to the detention room only to see her already inside.

She seems rather busy with her books writing something very seriously.

I take a chair behind her. She hasn't noticed me coming.

The class is quiet. I sit there bored. I know none in the room so I decide to irritate Melissa.

I take a paper and write down something and throw the chit from behind, on her desk.

She jerks because of the chit falling on her desk, and opens it with confusion wondering if that chit was really for her. I see her facial expression and smile inwardly.

"Your writing could leave holes on that poor desk. Please show it some pity;)" she reads out the words on the chit and immediately turns back.

"Hi" I whisper, grinning at her.

Her cheeks become red. It's fun looking at her expressions.

She writes down something at the back of the chit and passes it to me.

"If you are that worried about the school's property, you can fill the holes later after I leave. In fact , buy new benches for all the classes in this school ;)" it reads.

While I am writing another chit that reads "Ha! Ha! Very funny. Hey, by the way, I will drop you home as our houses are near. You don't mind right?", the detention in charge stands near me and snatches away the chit and shouts rather angrily.

"You have been sent to the detention as a punishment. Not to have fun."

I apologize and sit down. I sit quiet not knowing what to do. I see Melissa occasionally smiling to herself from the side.

Her cheeks elongate when she smiles and she looks like the bugs bunny. Very adorable that I want to pull her cheeks.

I want to somehow convey my message to her so I look for ways by turning around the class.

As, I am about to disturb her again, the detention in charge is already looking at me with big wide eyes.

I look down and not knowing what to do, eventually out of boredom fall asleep.

"Get up Parker" a familiar squeaky voice shouts.

I open my eyes to see Hazel.

"What are you doing here?" I ask.

I check the room to see where Melissa is. She is not to be seen anywhere.

Where did she go? I ponder.

"Oh! I was worried about you. I waited for your detention to be over so that we could go home together." She says.

Everything looks hazy and I don't listen to Hazel's words at all.

"Sorry , did you say something?" I ask .

"Yeah. Come let's go home together." She says.

I wanted to drop Melissa back home, but thanks to the detention in charge, I couldn't convey my message to her.

Me and Melissa were supposed to go together if she had agreed but, now I am going back home with Hazel.

I like spending time with Melissa. She is cute, and becomes red for smallest of the small things. I kind of find it very funny. It is fun teasing her and am eagerly looking forward to spending time with her.

I am on my way with Hazel to drop her home when she starts conversing. I get reminded of this morning where everything was vice'-versa. I had tried a conversation with Melissa and now, Hazel is trying the same with me. A curve forms on my face thinking about Melissa.

"Thank God! I made you smile!" Hazel says.

I regain my senses and look at Hazel with a confused expression. When did she make me smile? I think to myself.

I just nod my head to her continuous blabbering without paying much attention and drive the car faster to drop her home sooner so that I don't need to listen to her talks.

It's irritating hearing her squeaky voice and her bitchy attitude towards Melissa. Why is she superficial with me? What does she want from me?!

"Your house has come." I say.

"Thanks Parker!" she says and suddenly hugs me.

I feel uncomfortable and try pushing her slowly.

"It's late, your parents must be waiting" I say to divert from the awkward situation.

"No! It's never late for me. Come home! I will introduce you to my parents."she says excitedly.

"Umm.. No. Some other time. Got some work at home." I fake an artificial smile to escape from this embarrassing situation and wave her a bye. I zoom off from there without turning back.

I know, I have hurt Hazel, but she should know the taste of her own medicine!

I mean, why should I meet her parents?

I would rather meet Melissa' parents, if she wishes but not Hazel's!

Oh wait! What are you saying Parker? Are you out of your mind? Why in the world are you always thinking of Melissa?!

I suddenly hear the honking of horns from behind to only realize that, the traffic lights have turned green but I am still stopped in between the roads unaware of the clearance given by the traffic signal.

"I am sorry" I shout and drive home.

Embarrassing day, it has been! I think.

Melissa reminds me of "her". I should get a hold of myself.
