The dull buzz of my phone dragged me from sleep and into the routine of a normal school day. I slunk down the stairs and into the kitchen where Julie was cooking pancakes over the stove.
"So your finally up" she said, sounding more surprised than she actually was.
I answered with a sigh and dropped down into my seat. A small stack of pancakes already lay on the table. I grabbed a fork and stabbed into the food.
Our cat Greybo rubbed his head against my ankle before dropping a small bird at my feet. I glared at him and gave him a halfhearted swipe with my hand to move him away. He glared back before padding away towards the back door.
Once I'm done eating, I walk up the stairs and head towards the trapdoor that leads to the attic. I push my hand against the smooth wood and open it. I pull the ladder down and climb up. Just inside the door lies a stack of dust covered boxes with a faded label on one side. I stand up and let my eyes drift over the lost contents of the room.
An ancient looking mirror leans against the back wall. I didn't remember choosing to move towards it but once I did, a strange feeling engulfed the room, like someone had torn through space to put something there that shouldn't be there. Once I'm at the mirror, I brush the thick blanket of dust off the glass, revealing a sliver swirling sheet.
I press my hand to the glass and feel it slip through. On the other side it doesn't look like a hand, instead of skin, iridescent scales covered what looked like a dragon's talon each finger was tipped with a curved claw instead of nails.
I pulled my hand back in surprise only to find that it was my own again. Curious, I pushed my hands through the portal again to see the same effect but this time, when I tried to pull them back, they stayed stuck in the portal. I could feel the portal pulling on my wrists; tugging me into whatever world was on the other side. Suddenly, the mirror ripped slightly forwards and fell onto me pulling the rest of my body into the new world.
