Chapter 25: When the Tree Falls.

I'm saying right now that name is weird. But when you finish reading the chapter, it'll make sense.
(Gary's POV)
Not gonna lie, Ash did scare me when he yelled at me. I felt as though he was gonna strangle me to death. But in his voice I heard sadness, like he was scared and sad. I could tell he was hiding the pain he had felt when he said that. As I rode Pigeot back to Kanto, I tried thinking of some happy memories... And soon Flashbacks began to hit me...

FlashBack...
It was a hot summer day. The Kanto sun was beating down on 7 year old me. Blue, my older brother was training with his at the time Squirtle. With him being 14 at the time, he was an outstanding trainer. And I remember Red who was 10 at the time receiving his Charmander... Red and Blue were such frenemies. They hung out but strived to be be the best. Yet this one summer day turned into a summer night. We were all gazing out towards the stars on a hill... and just talked...
"Hey Red, if you became Champion of the World, what would you say to yourself as a reflection?" Blue questioned Red who struggle to answer. The area went silent until Red responded, "I'd say most likely thank you to Professor Oak for everything he has done. Along with my friends, especially Gold. I feel that if I were champion they deserve credit. After all, they did support me probably up to that point." Hearing that response from Red really inspired me that day. Not to mention my older bro. It felt so... professional the way he said it. I remember after he said that a beautiful meteor shower fell, filling the night sky.

The smiles, the laughs... What happened to you Red?

FlashBack #2
"Listen here Gary, I want you to learn the type advantages and disadvantages. If you do so it'll help you as a trainer" Professor Oak told me as Red and Blue battled in the background. He kept pointing to the chalkboard and 8 year old me kept looking at him explain the typings. However, I myself kept looking out the window and saw a boy with spikey black hair playing in the snow. It was Early January, and a huge snowstorm hit the town last night. However, Gramps said today I'd learn about battling. "Gary, please pay attention." Gramps banged the chalk board to get my attention. He was talking about water types, which was the only type I really paid attention to. He showed me some examples of water types, and I loved Blastoise, even if my brother had one already. Every other typing he talked about bore me. I nearly fell asleep during this lecture. And what good would it even do!?!
When it was over, I went to watch Blue and Red. I even saw Gold there. Although Gold is 1 year older than me. Gold waved to me as I sat on the floor watching them fight in the snow since they moved outside. They fought like cats. Yet I remember Professor sitting next to me and us eating warm cookies and Hot Chocolate. He talked some inspirational words too, but I forgot what he said... Also because I didn't pay attention to him anyway-
I felt my legs crunch as Pigeot had landed on the ground hard. Snapped me out the flashback. We were now in front of the hospital in Kanto. It towered over us. I returned Pigeot back into his Pokeball, and walked into the hospital full of people and Pokémon. The place was built about 3 months ago. It's brand new. But with the war, many people lay in beds. I walked up to the reception desk, to check in. "Good Morning, I'm Gary Oak, and I was told my Father was in this Hospita-" The lady cut me off. "Say no more. Your Father is on the Top Floor. Just take the elevator and find room 989." The nurse pointed to the elevators, then smiled. I walked over and called the elevator. It took a whole 6 minutes for it to come, and tons of doctors and patients came spewing out of it. I thankfully entered the elevator alone, and headed to the top floor being floor 52. I listened to the elevator music and began asking questions.

What did Steven do to Professor Oak?

Why did Steven attack Professor Oak in the first place?

Does Gold, Blue, or even Red know about this?

Why do I feel like I'm about to throw up???

I tried to stay calm, but the shaking in my legs made this feel like a battle to become the champion of a region. The music in the elevator helped, but not too much. And slowly did the elevator door open, making an eerie noise that screeched. I was met with a huge area that I presume was the lobby. I went to the window and looked down. This hospital is the size of Lumiose Tower, but way bigger and taller. The height was so high, I nearly fainted. But soon I began to walk down dark hallways, past many rooms. Inside were injured Humans and Pokémon. Many had lost their legs or arms. Has humanity gone insane? I saw some Trainers crying at their Pokémon's side. Most likely they were afraid the Pokémon was gonna... Go away forever. Honestly, I was feeling that I'd be joining these trainers in the same position soon...
I eventually found room 989, and a Doctor was talking to Gramps. I saw he had bandages on his head, and his leg was completely ruined. No. His entire right side of his body was smashed. I waited outside for the doctor to finish. When he walked out, he saw me. "Are you perhaps Gary Oak?" He asked. I just nodded as he looked to the floor.
"Listen, I'm gonna tell you this the best way I can... Your Father's Chance for Survival are SLIM... He can't get enough oxygen. Not to mention... His age doesn't help the situation... I'm sorry, but he may... Die..." The Doctor put his hand on my shoulder as I stayed silent. "Please, say your final regards to him... I... I know he was a great man. He... Was nice and kind... We tried everything Gary but... His bones are broken... There isn't much we can do..." The Doctor began to walk away as I heard Gramps coughing inside the room. I walked in, and saw him smile as he had always done before. He was breathing in a mask, and his heart rate was below average. "G...Gary..." he tried to speak, but coughed again. "Father please! Save your energy... Your gonna be ok. But what happened!?!" I tried to stay calm, but obviously wasn't. "S...Steven attacked me... Thinking... I was a major threat... and a... potential victim... he could use for info on Team Delia..." Gramps was trying to sound happy, but he was too weak to even do that. "Th- then... he sent out M...Metagross... It used... Meteor Mash... Couldnt avoid it..." Professor Oak began to breathe heavily. "Who brought you here Gramps? Blue?" I was now by his side holding his hand.
"No... General Serena helped me out... And soon others tried to beat Steven to no luck... Serena was the one to bring me to the hospital... While... a person wearing cool black clothes began holding back Steven... I'm not sure if it was a girl or boy..." I thought of who Serena was, and remembered that she was a Master Class Finalist from the Kalos Region who had a crush on Ashy-Boy supposedly. Not to mention she was a General for Team Delia. Then who was the person in black clothes? That's when I realized who it was. "Are you saying Cynthia held Steven Stone back for Serena to save you?" I was so grateful for their actions, even if they were a little late and were my enemies. Gramps didn't respond. I saw his eyes begin to slowly close. "Gramps!?! Are you ok!?!" I panicked and he gave a thumbs up. "Sorry... It's hard trying to stay awake..." He told me. I looked at the little machine and his heart rate was... way down... His breathing was also heavier now... "Gary... Listen to me- *coughs*. I want to... tell you something..." I inched closer to him. But he put my head on his chest for me to rest on. And it was quite relaxing. Felt... Nostalgic... Like Deja Vu- That's when a flashback hit me...

Flashback #3
In the middle of a summer night... I had awoken late at night... scared... I had crawled into my Father's Bedroom, to see him too awake...
"Gary? Why are you up sonny? It's 3 AM" He asked, but I slowly got onto his bed. Only 4 at the time, Gramps looked at me. And soon he placed my head on his lap. I could see him smile as he pat my head.
"Listen here, Son. One day, I will leave this world. And when I do, I want you to bury me under a tree... That way, the tree will be there to comfort you. It'll give you oxygen, shade, and a place to nap at. And the tree will stay with you longer than I will. It won't fall that easily as me. I tell you this because I want you to look up to trees. They're strong, and an important element for us to survive. They don't fall easily. I want you, Gary Oak, to look up to trees. I hope you are to become like one. Strong, Peaceful, and Kind. And one day, people will look up to you." I remember my eyes barely staying awake hearing that story. And Gramps let me sleep in his room for the night, and that night I dreamed about cool magical trees gifting me cool powers like flight. But I easily forgot about this moment the more time went on...
End of Flashback #3...
Gramps was indeed talking about trees when I stopped seeing the flashback. "I told you that trees will live longer... Doesnt mean their invincible... They're weak in certain aspects... But everyone in life is weak in one subject... Including me and you... Nobody is perfect, and you don't have to be perfect..." At this point I could feel some tears rolling down my face.
Gramps began to close his eyes while coughing. "Boy... My time is up..." He said so weakly. I instantly panicked. "Wait Gramps! You can't leave me during a war! I need you!" I cried. "Heh... Gary, don't let Blue and Red push you around. I know... *coughs* you can beat them... Actually maybe not... But hey... At least try-" Gramps paused and closed his eyes. The machine was beeping hard.

Just a long beep... With the number zero... A few straight lines showing on the screen...

(Yes this was drawn by me. Signature in bottom left corner.)
HE'S GONE...
He didn't breathe... His heart wasn't pumping... My Father, Professor Oak, has left this world... Tears kept running down my face... I didn't want to accept him dead! I don't even want him gone! I cried on the bed while the doctor came in to comfort me. That's when we heard an explosion from the bottom floor from way down below. And tons of screaming. "What was that and why now of all times!" I screamed. That's when we heard the elevator open. And soon people on this floor began to shake in fear. "So, your here to see your own Father die in front of your eyes. Wow, I can't believe you at times, bro." Said a person with a familiar voice who entered the room. I could see a Blastoise behind him. "Killing your own Father I see Gary. Your so low." Said the person smirking. It was Blue, sounding dead serious. "I didn't kill him! It was Steven!" I yelled. "Don't deny it. Somebody from Team Delia recorded you attacking Gramps, and it's gone viral." Blue said turning on the TV showing the news.

News Flash!
Steven Stone found innocent after shocking evidence reveals Gary was the one to have attacked Professor Oak. Eye Witnesses from Team Red who witnessed the scene said Gary had gone mad and Professor Oak tried to calm him down only for him to get attacked by Gary's Blastoise. Yet Team Delia says it was Steven who attacked Professor Oak. Yet this video from General Brock says otherwise. It shows Gary completely mad and lashing out at everyone. More details later on tonight...
"See! And I was told that He's Dead now. And they were true." Blue glared at me as he said that. I was in the worst position. Now everyone was gonna see me as a cold hearted murderer. "So Gary, I'm here to take you to jail, by any means necessary." As he said that Blastoise  began to charge a hydro pump and aimmed it at my head. "It was Steven Stone! Ask Cynthia or Serena! She'll say so!" I tried to make myself innocent. "They're busy attacking your Leader. I'm here to deal with you so I can make Father proud..." Blastoise fired the hydro pump. I thankfully dodged it but it broke the wall. I tried running away, but soon Blue tackled me to the ground. "Sorry Brother, but you deserve this..." Blue said with a low voice. Blastoise busted down a window... And Blue threw me out of it... And all I saw was the ground far below...
