Hiccup and (Y/N) walk through the woods, stumbling upon the two bolas they shot the day before. The boy bends down, picking the bola up and expecting it. (Y/N) kicks the bola into a nearby bush, rolling her eyes and continuing forward.
Hiccup watches her with a frown. He noticed that ever since she got home, she didn't bother to talk to him, which concerned the boy.
He noticed that the splotches on her cheek had now turned a bright red, but not the horrific kind. It was the kind that he wanted to trace with his finger. The kind he wanted to stare at for as long as he could.
The marks were small, red and circular shaped. They created a pattern, almost like stars against the girls cheeks.
You'd think that she'd been embarrassed by them, but you couldn't be more wrong. The second (Y/N) left the infirmary, she didn't bother to cover her marks with a cloth, nor did she decide to make her way home.
She went about the rest of her day, she bought fish, did her daily exercise and ignored the odd stares people sent her way. But she couldn't rid her mind of the conversation (if you could even call it that) she had with Astrid.
It hurt (Y/N) to know that Astrid felt that way. She never meant to make it seem like she cared more for the Haddock boy.
It was just that Hiccup and her connected more easily then (Y/N) and Astrid ever did, or could.
Sure that sounds selfish, but it was true. The minute she bumped into the boy, she knew that they would become close friends.
They had the same interests, and they were both socially awkward. The only difference was that (Y/N) could stand up for herself more easily than Hiccup.
(Y/N) shakes her head, trying to rid herself of the thoughts. She needed to focus on the task at hand, finding the Woolly Howl and Night Fury..
...
They both make it to a clearing and stop, staring in awe at the sight infront of him. A decent sized pond sat in the middle, small fish bobbing to the surface every few minutes.
(Y/N) grins, nudging her shoulder against Hiccups, "Dibs." She calls, sitting down and draping her legs over the edge.
Hiccup looks down at her, "You can't call dibs on a place we both found!" He retorts, snickering slightly as he watches her roll her eyes.
She leans over and pinches his ankle, causing him to let out a surprised yelp. Hiccup turns to glare at her, but (Y/N) stuck her tongue out with a laugh.
"..Dibs."
The two laugh, but it slowly fades as Hiccup bends down. He picks up a black scale, it's surface almost like leather. (Y/N) turns her head, finding three deep gashes in the rock above them.
She gasps, about to speak but is cut off by a large body flying infront of them. They both yell, falling back and gasping.
The Night Fury scrambles to try and climb up the wall, the Woolly Howl roaring softly and trying to push him up before he yelps, licking at his wounded foot as the Fury safely glides back down.
The teens laugh, nodding to eachother as they crouch down to make sure they weren't seen.
The Night Fury takes off again, the Howl following next to him and pausing as the dragon falls from the sky with a whine.
The Woolly Howl watched with drooped ears as his friend tries flying off again, only to fall once more. (Y/N) tilts her head, trying to understand why the dragon couldn't take off.
The Fury's ear flicks slightly before he jerks his head in their direction, the Howl doing the same. The teens duck before peeking over once more, watching as the dragon tries to fly again, only to fall with a pained whine.
Hiccup takes out his journal, flipping it over and beginning to sketch the Night Fury, (Y/N) takes her journal out and does the same, only she sketched the Howl.
(Y/N) finishes her drawing quickly, closing her journal gently before taking a look at Hiccup's. She looks to the Fury, glancing to his tail and noticing that a fin was missing.
She nudges her friend and gestures towards the tail, Hiccup nodding and rubbing the detail away.
"Why don't they just..fly away?" He mumbles, tapping his pencil against his chin softly. (Y/N) shrugs, shaking her head as she smiles down at the dragons.
The Woolly Howl roars softly at the Furry, whacking it against its head with his tail. The Night Fury barks, crouching down and starring at his friend, his pupils dilated.
The dragon pounces, tackling his friend to the ground. The dragons bark and playfully scratch at eachother, almost like cats.
Hiccup and (Y/N) chuckle at them, watching with fond smiles. "Their friends.." Hiccup mumbles, his smile turning into a grin, he glances to his friend, a teasing glint in his eyes. "Like us.."
(Y/N) chuckles, resting her head on his shoulder with a sigh. "Definitely like us.." she whispers, her eyes dropping.
She watches as the dragons stop near the pond, quickly ducking their heads in and snapping their jaws, trying to catch fish. They resurface with a grunt as all the fish swim away, none hanging from their jaws.
The teens gasp as the dragons turn towards them, their eyes turning to slits. The Howl stares at (Y/N), a little to closely. The girl smiles awkwardly, nodding her head before turning away.
Hiccup turn to her with a raised brow, "Did you smile at a dragon?" He whisper shouts, (Y/N) rolling her eyes, she doesn't say anything and continues to stare at the Howl.
The dragon's mouth pulls back, it's teeth slightly showing. It imitates a poor smile, it wobbled a bit before it fell, the dragon turning away with a soft growl.
(Y/N) stares wide eyed, a small smile on her face. "And he just smiled back!" She laughed, Hiccup releasing a breathless laugh.
The boy turns back to the Night Fury, the dragon lying on his side as he watched him. Hiccup tilted his head to the side, the dragon mimicking him with curiosity. The teens and the dragons continue to stare, examining each other carefully.
...
"All right! Where did Astrid go wrong?" Gobber asked, him and the rest of the teens sat in the dinning hall, a storm slowly forming outside. "I mistimed my somersault.." Astrid replied, her chin propped up by her hand as she stares at the table in boredom.
The sound of the doors opening caught her attention, she turned slightly, her eyes catching sight of (Y/N) walking through, her hair slightly damp from the rain.
Astrid smiles, about to call to her but stops, she watches as Hiccup stumbles after her, closing the door with a sigh before making his way towards (Y/N).
He nods to her, grabbing her hand and leading her towards the table. Astrid feels her smile drop, she turns back towards the table, a slight glare on her face.
"It was sloppy.." she continues, Gobber taking note of her soured face but doesn't say anything. "Yeah, we noticed." Ruffnut replies sarcastically, rolling her eyes. Snotlout shakes his head, leaning closer to Astrid as he speaks up.
"No, no! You were great!" He complements, the girl paying him no mind. "It was so..Astrid!" He grins, everyone else scoffing at his flirting.
"She's right, you have to be tough on yourselves!" Gobber speaks up, watching as
(Y/N) and Hiccup approach the table.
Ruffnut swiftly scoots over, blocking the seat Hiccup was going to take.
(Y/N) snatches a plate of food, sighing softly as Hiccup does the same, Snotlout blocking the seat besides the (H/C) girl. Astrid watches the scene with a glare, she kicks Snotlout under the table, causing the boy to yell in pain.
The Hofferson scoots over, making room for (Y/N) as she looks to the girl with hope. (Y/N) looks to the others, not noticing a place for Hiccup to sit.
She turns to Astrid with an apologetic smile, turning away and leading Hiccup towards another table. She ignores Astrid's pained expression as she and Hiccup sit at a table in the corner.
"Where did those two go wrong today?" Gobber asks, Hiccup sighing as (Y/N) looks to the one legged man in annoyance.
She grabs a piece of bread from her plate and chucks it towards Gobber, the piece hitting him on the side of his face. Hiccup chuckles, (Y/N) turning to him with a smirk. Gobber ignores the two with a sigh, turning to the rest of the teens, waiting for their answers.
"They showed up?" Ruffnut questions, the others, excluding Astrid, laughing with her. "He didn't get eaten and she won't date me?" Tuffnut tries, the last statement made both Hiccup and (Y/N) cringe in disgust.
"They're never where they should be." Astrid finally answers, making (Y/N) stare at her with a hard glare, Hiccup chuckling nervously.
"Thank you, Astrid." Gobber dramatically thanks. "You need to live and breathe this
stuff!" He walks past the two teens, both of them looking down, not meeting the man's eyes.
"The dragon manual." He states, throwing a rather large book onto their table. "Everything we know, of every dragon we know of."
Thunder bellows outside, the group all turn towers the sound, cursing in their minds about having to walk home in the rain. "No attack tonight.." Gobber mumbles, slamming his hand on the table with a grunt. "Study up!" He sates, not sparing them a second glance as he walks out of the hall.
"Wait..you mean read?!" Tuffnut groans, his sister following along "While we're still alive?!" The others nod, rolling their eyes in annoyance. "Why read words when you can just kill the stuff the words tell you stuff about?" Snotlout angrily demands, (Y/N) scoffing at his words.
"Oh, I've read it, like, seven times. There's this water dragon that sprays boiling water at your face." Fishlegs starts, making them all slowly turn and face him. "And there's this-this other one that buries-" he's cut off by the twins.
"Yeah, sounds great.." Tuffnut interrupts, snapping his hand in a silencing gesture before he leans back. "There was a chance I was gonna read that..but now..." Ruffnut boredly trails off.
"You guys read, I'll go kill stuff," Snotlout rises, leaving the hall, the others following. Astrid stays behind, finishing her water with a sigh.
Hiccup rises and walks over to her, (Y/N) watching him curiously as she follows loosely behind. They stand next to the Hofferson girl, awkwardly shifting in their spots as she finishes her drink.
"So.." Hiccup starts, "Guess it just..you and-" Astrid shakes her head, slamming her cup down and pushing the book towards the two. "Read it." She replies flatly, making her way towards the door.
"All ours, then. Wow." Hiccup mumbles, joining (Y/N) with fake enthusiasm. "Guess we'll see you-" The door slams shut, making them wince with a sigh as they sit down in front of the manual.
"... Tomorrow."
...
The two sit infront of the manual, getting comfortable as they open it and begin to read. Hiccup sets a candle down, moving it slightly away from the book, (Y/N) yawns gently, rubbing her eyes as she shifts her weight onto her friends shoulder. The boy smiles softly and opens the book.
"Dragon classifications." he reads, looking over the first page. "Strike class, fear class, mystery class." He lists, his eyes skimming over the words.
He turns the page, gasping and swiftly flattening it as it threatens to turn back over. (Y/N) closes her eyes and smiles, setting her hand on the book as she gestures with her head for him to continue.
"Thunderdrum.." Hiccup continues, his eyes widening at the sight of the frightening-looking dragon. "This reclusive dragon inhabits sea caves and dark tide pools. When startled, the Thunderdrum produces a concussive sound that...can kill a man at close range."
(Y/N) shivers lightly at the image. "Extremely dangerous, kill on sight," Hiccup mumbles, looking at the words in red before skimming through a few pages.
"Timberjack. This gigantic creature has razor-sharp wings." (Y/N) reads, "They can slice through full-grown trees?!" She whispers in disbelief, looking at the image as she shakes her head.
"Extremely dangerous, kill on sight." Hiccup continues, turning another page. "Cauldron, sprays..scalding water at its victim.
Extremely dangerous-" he's cut off by a loud bang.
Both teens flinch as the dinning halls door opens slightly, thunder and lighting sounding from outside. (Y/N) sighs and gets up, she walks over to the door and slams it shut, patting it softly with a sigh before making her way back towards Hiccup.
The boy smiles at her in thanks, scooting slightly to make room for her (even though the whole table was empty, so there was no need.)
(Y/N) settles back in her seat, nodding at her friend to continue. He complies, opening the book again and continuing. "Changewing. Even newly hatched dragons can spray acid. Kill on sight." He flips the pages and reads off some of the names.
"Gronckle, Zippleback, the Skrill.. bone Knapper." Hiccup gulps, quickly turning the page. "Whispering Death.."
(Y/N) flinches at the terrifying dragon, swallowing thickly as he continues. "Burns its victims, chokes its victims, buries its victims. Turns its victims..inside out.." he breaths in disbelief, quickly reaching over and turning the page.
"Extremely dangerous, extremely dangerous.." Hiccup reads off, turning multiple pages at a
time.
"Dragons are dangerous.." (Y/N) sighs, shaking her head. "Kill on sight, kill on sight, kill on sight." They continue, before suddenly stopping on a blank page. They read the name and gasp.
"Night Fury.."
"Speed unknown, size unknown.." Hiccup reads the small print. "The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself." He continues, his finger skimming the words before pausing. "This dragon always manages to strike twice in two different locations."
"Two different..it must be the Woolly Howl with him!"Hiccup realizes, making his friend nod. "That's how he does it! His friend flies with him!"
(Y/N) nods before taking out her journal, opening it to the drawing and setting it on the empty spot next to the Night Fury's page. "Never engage this dragon." Hiccup continues reading, sighing softly. "Your only chance..."
"..hide and pray it does not find you."
Hiccup does the same, opening towards the Night Fury's page and setting it atop the blank page with a sigh. (Y/N) suddenly pauses, grabbing the book and skimming through the pages, Hiccup watching with a confused look.
"What are you.." he mumbles, jerking his head back as (Y/N) slams the book on a empty page, she grabs her drawing of the Woolly Howl and slams it on the page. Hiccup suddenly gasps, understanding what she was doing...
Why was the Woolly Howl not in the book?
