Chapter 12

"A good friend is like a four leaf clover, hard to find but lucky to have."-Irish Proverb

Chloe's POV:

I groan as I pull Melissa to help me finish the chores in the kitchen. There wasn't much to do since the staff is already present in the kitchen preparing food for all the members since morning.

I glare fiercely at Mel who sat on the counter taking a bite from the bowl filled with chocolate dough.

"You are not getting any share in those cookies, I swear."

At first she hums, her eyelids shut as she enjoys the sweet flavor of the chocolate dough. She snaps her eyes open in fear, realizing the threat behind my sixth warning.

"Wha-wait,why?"

"Mel stop being a lazy butt and come help me shape these cookies." She sighs placing the plastic bowl aside, swinging her feet back and forth she slips slowly from the counter landing on her feet.

"Whats so hard about making cookies?" She rolls her eyes walking over to my side.

Mel and I decided to make few cookies for Eric and the rest of us. I personally felt like doing something on my own rather than having it ordered from outside. Once it is done, we will have it ready to be served tomorrow along with the cake.

It was a easy task requesting the cooking staff to allow us to make a tray of cookies on our own. The head of the kitchen was rather pleased but on one condition that we do not end up making her kitchen a living mess.

"Look, place a small piece of dough on you palms and try to shape it."

I watched closely as Melissa makes a small coin shaped cookie placing it on the tray.

Impressive.

"Never knew you could bake." I follow her steps trying to make another cookie. She giggles on my compliment.

"Nah dude, I just happened to read a cooking magazine once. Things would be lot easier if we had more equipment."

I ended up making perfect size cookies out of the dough and kept placing them on the tray. I look at myself and the surroundings and sigh in frustration.

Flour.

Flour on my dress,on the floor and on the counter.

Looks like I couldn't keep my promise to the head. I turn to Mel who finishes the last piece of dough and places it on the tray.

"Mel could you do the rest,I'll get this place cleaned up." She nods at me before moving away along with the tray.

She goes to the other side of the huge kitchen which is filled with people rustling, busy preparing for the lunch.

I look around taking a deep breath and getting back to work.It takes about ten minutes before I'm done cleaning the place free from any speck of flour.

I grin admiring my handy work.It probably is the first time I cleaned the place since I arrived to the asylum. The counter shines under the bright light from the ceiling showing my own reflection.

"Oh sweet,you're done."

Melissa walks to me patting me on my back making me grin widely.

"Crap,it is almost time for the class, Eric is really looking forward to this one." I frown making Mel mimic me. We still need to wait and watch over the cookies.

"Wait,I will stay back and watch over the cookie. You go ahead."

I shake my head at her not willing to throw the responsibility on her shoulders, partly afraid that she may end up burning the treat.

She narrows her black eyes at me before they grow wide," You think I'll burn it down?" She whisper-yells at me trying not to catch the attention of people working around us.

I glance away unsure and nod at her. Mel sighs at me, " You choose, should we both stay back and make him disappointed or get the cookies done along with making him pleased."

I groan knowing she is right."Fine, be quick though, Eric wanted all of us there, together." I emphasize the last word.

She nods giving me a thumbs-up and a tight lip smile and drags me towards the exit.

I glance down at my gown, rubbing off the flour and walk straight towards my destination. It surprises me that I managed to finally learn the crazy map of first floor.

I walk steadily taking few turns before I finally come to stand outside a wooden door labelled as 'class'. I plaster a smile before placing my hand on the knob, twisting and opening the door.

I step inside the room and all the eyes land on me. There aren't any other people except for a nurse standing next to a black board. Aiden's back was facing me indicating he is busy with his work.

Emma and Eric along with the lady in the room notice me. Eric grins wildly seeing me and waves his hand, "Thanks for coming Chloe."

I smile at his tiny face with large grey eyes that twinkled with happiness. I walk towards them taking a seat behind Aiden.

"Of course I would Eric." I reply to him and glance at Emma. She furrows her eyebrows, secretly questioning me if Mel and I managed to bake the cookies.

I nod at her, mouthing Mel is there. Her eyes widen making me chuckle inwardly.

"Chloe, here, take your paper and draw that." Emma hands me a plain sheet with a pencil. I look between Aiden and Eric to find them trying to copy the diagram from the black board.

I glance at the board to find a drawing of a horse with a chalk. A silent groan escapes my lips.

I was expecting them to teach something but of course this isn't a school to be exact. The nurse excuses herself and leaves the room in charge of Aiden.

I lean back into my chair and squint my eyes, closely observing the curves of the horse and start to draw it on my paper. The room falls in silence as everyone directs their attention, trying to draw.

I hear the door open with a creak but couldn't care less to glance at who it was.I'm sure its probably the nurse who came back after taking her mini break.

I concentrate on shading the mane of the horse.

A figure comes next to me, pulling the chair back and taking a seat right behind Emma.My alarm goes off making me alert.

I tense up the moment the familiar fragrance of sandalwood hits me.

Xavier.

I gulp trying to act cool and calm. I try to direct my brain back to drawing not caring others in the room wishing to him on his arrival.

I curse mentally that I didn't take a single seat and went for the sharing table. My breath hitches the moment I felt his elbow touch mine sending tingles all over my hand.

I'm beginning to hate him.

More like myself for feeling this awkward.

My heart does a epic somersault as he leans towards me, "Hey Chloe."

His warm breath fans over the side of my ear making me numb. The butterflies in my stomach just happened to erupt like a active volcano. His voice comes out silky and light when his tongue rolls my name.

I tilt my head towards him only to find him staring at me. His eyes are really something. They're so calm and serene that I'm often lost into those depths of blue.

I smile at him, more like force my lips not to quiver. "Hey Xavier."

I don't know if I imagined it but I saw his pupils dilate on the mention of his name for a split of a second before he regains back his composure.

I frankly like him better when he acts like a child,at least my heart wouldn't go berserk.

I go back to drawing. It made me flustered whenever I catch a glimpse of him staring at me from the corner of my eye.

"Hah,I'm done losers.ME first." Aiden announces holding up his piece of paper. Emma doesn't give him a second glance busy in her art but it spikes up Eric's interest.

"I'm done too." He leans over A's shoulder trying to peek into his drawing as he sat admiring his work.

Since my stomach is making me want to puke butterflies and rainbows thanks to Xavier, I decide to check out his drawing. I get up and walk beside Aiden to see both the boys looking at the picture.

"This-uh-it is..." Eric trails off making my forehead crease in curiosity.

I slowly peek over his shoulder and my eyeballs nearly fall out my sockets. I immediately slap my hand over my mouth trying to stifle a threatening sound. My chest heaves up and down as I try to clam my nerves.

Melissa makes an entry right at that moment and walks over to a seat in the corner of the class, crashing into it, sighing out loudly. She probably is tired standing and waiting for the cookies to be baked perfectly. Her shoulder slump as she didn't care a one or two to glance at any of us.

"I know! It is my master piece." Aiden grins looking at his paper and Eric stutters trying to word out his thoughts. He finally finds the most possible right words, "Big b-bro, w-what is that?"

This time Xavier gets up and stands beside Eric.I try to stay back as far as possible even though Xavier stood beside Eric.He frowns at the drawing trying to comprehend it.

Aiden looks up at Eric with a frown trying to state the oblivious," It is a horse can't you tell?"

That moment I lose my control and burst into a witch-type-laugh. I don't know what amused me to this extent, was it the drawing Aiden vowed to be a horse or the shocked expressions of Xavier and Eric.

Priceless.

"Bro,it is-"  Xavier trails off just like Eric as they both ignore my laugh. I clutch my stomach trying to stand still. Aiden pouts at us not before sending a glare on my way.

Emma and Mel gather up behind us finally giving into the the commotion. Emma stifles a laugh the moment she gazes up at the drawing but she clears her throat when Aiden looks at her in hope.

Melissa slings her one arm over my shoulder, too tired from her first activity of the day. She squints her eyebrows at the drawing, scrunches her nose in disgust.

"A! What unholy things are you trying to draw, It looks worse that a five-year old drawing, hell I can do lot better."

Xavier and Emma skillfully team up trying to dodge the answer by swooning over Eric's drawing and complimenting him genuinely. They both completely ignore Aiden and his 'masterpiece'

Aiden and Mel continue their argument over nothing.

"You never appreciate me when I draw." He fumes, flaring his nostrils as he continues.

"I'm an artist too."

Mel fires back instantly, bored at her brother's statements. She waves her hand in the air and rolls her eyes,

"And I'm Elon musk."

---

Everyone enjoys their lunch peacefully. The food tastes lot better after all the chores and duties I went through. Everyone sat together at lunch, this time even Xavier joined us.

It made my mind jumble with questions wondering why he wasn't switching his persona's as frequently as he used to. I shrugged it off concluding maybe he is finally getting better.

It made my heart beat faster wishing for him to recover for unknown reasons.

Xavier and Melissa teamed up together trying to divert Eric in other work while I head to the office along with Aiden and Emma.

I glance around the small office that is gleaming because of it's white walls.Melissa walks over to the book shelf lazily scanning over the books. I learned it recently through Aiden that she is a book worm.

"Sorry I tried searching for it,but no one is ready for delivering it tomorrow." Trinity pushes her glasses with her index looking at us.

Aiden frowns at her as he stares at the computer screen, standing next to Trinity. Her emerald colored eyes flicker to me for a second before they brighten up.

"What if..we drive to a bakery I know in this town and get a cake?" Aiden beams like a child at her words making her smile sheepishly.

"And I'll tag along with you." He adds unable to contain his excitement. I frown in confusion that's making him so hyped up.

I glance at Mel in search of an answer and she chuckles looking at my puzzled face.

"He loves to go on a car ride, more like trying to learn how to drive." She tells before burying her face back into the book. My mouth forms into a perfect 'o'.

Both of them talk and discuss their various plans. I watch Trinity closely as she teaches me how to order things online.

It excited me that I can order something I desire and Trinity insisted that she will pay. It was supposed to be a welcome gift when I arrived here but Trinity couldn't get one not knowing my likes.

I thought a lot for a while but failed.

" I'll think of it and order later." She nods at me telling, I could ask her up anytime to order. It made me speechless, she is naturally generous enough to do that for some random patient here.

I like her.

I walk over to Mel observing the shelves. This place does look like a library. The shelves touch the ceiling and the books that high are covered with dust visibly and large spider webs surround the racks.

Mel goes through a bunch of piled up papers but accidentally drops it down. A poof sound follows with a large ball of dust particles spreading in the air. I cough, waving my hand in the air to clear it up.

"Oh sorry."

I bend down next to Mel to help her collect the papers. That's when I realize they're old newspapers that were tied in a bundle and kept in the corner of the rack.

I pick them up one by one, they're scattered all over the floor. My gaze lands on one particular paper with the heading in black bold letters and I halt.

Massacre of Hilton's town,19 Feb 2018.

I slowly pick that newspaper scanning over the printed words.Mel gets up holding her papers and I tear away my eyes from the article. I quickly pick the rest of the papers.I place this particular paper along with the others when once again my eyes catch the words printed in bold font.

'Death of serial killer,Paul Smith and -'

"Guys let's go."

I break from my stance to look up at Aiden waiting by the door to leave.Melissa rushes to him and I gather rest of the papers, placing them carefully under shelf.

I mentally make a note to read those papers later when I visit this place again. My heart flutters in a hope of finding something that can be useful for me to regain my memory.

"Coming." I get up and dust my gown, walking over to my friends.
