Playing Victim

We all go through life as either playing the victim, being the enabler or justifying why you do half the things you do in your life.  It's like it's become apart of us as we grow older and somehow we always fall into one of the three categories.  Sometimes all three if you are just that bitch.  It doesn't matter where we go in life, who we are or surround ourselves with - one of those three just always slip out in different situations.

Alison was walking into work with Derek that day as she was drinking her favorite iced caramel macchiato from Starbucks as they were chatting about the day previously.

"Hi, little one," Derek greets his best friend and coworker.

"Hi McDreamy," she greets him with a smile to which he laughs and throws his head back.

"McDreamy, really?  Are we still on that nickname?"

"If the shoe fits," she teases back.

"So I heard about the problem that happened with that one patient," he tells her as she groans throwing her head back slightly due to the worst memory she wanted to forget.  She wanted it out of her mind and thrown away with a lock and key to never resurface again if possible.

"Don't remind me.  Your wife probably hates my guts and now our hospital is being sued by her husband Chris."

"My wife does not hate you."

Alison gave him a look to which he let out a laugh.

"She doesn't.  I promise, I wouldn't lie to you."

Alison grumbled and sipped her coffee as they bumped into the interns as Cristina was doing what looked like a happy dance.  Derek let out a low grumble of annoyance having to see Meredith again and Alison slightly chuckled.  Alison would either drink the iced caramel macchiato or if she needed to really be awake it would be the Starbucks Doubleshot on Ice coffee.

"Sorry sir, ma'am," Cristina apologized to the two of them.

"Morning, Doctor Anderson," George greeted the blonde doctor with a smile and shy wave making Cristina snort.

"Morning O'Malley," Alison greeted him back with a smile.  "And the rest of the interns.  Karev," she pointed him out and left leaving Derek alone with them.

Alison got changed out of her clothes and into her scrubs along with her white lab coat.  She pulled her blonde hair into a pony tail finding it easier for the day as it was not agreeing with her this morning after her night out the night before.

"What's up with you?" Alison noticed a change in Shepherd's tone after he had talked to the interns, specifically Meredith.

"I can't talk right now, I have to go help the patients," he mentioned the ambulance that had just pulled up.

Alison waved an awkward goodbye since he left before she could wave to him.  She went off to her normal area where she always went every morning.

"I don't hate you and I'm not upset with you," Addison comes up to the younger doctor.  "If anything, I hate myself for even listening to that patient.  And for thinking it was okay and that it wasn't going to come around and bite me in the ass later.  I'm sorry if I took it out on you, that was wrong of me and I apologize."

"Aw," Alison brings a hand to her heart.  "I'm touched," she teases the older doctor making the brunette shove her playfully.

"Shut up and get back to work."

"No but truly.  I appreciate it.  Thank you."

"Yeah, well, at least you don't have it on your record now like a black plague.  You were right and I was wrong," she mumbles the last part hating to admit it but Alison was never one to gloat in one's misery.

"Hey, in all fairness, who would have thought that this would blow up in your face?  I didn't think she would react like that and that's a pretty shitty thing of her to do to you after you helped her out."

"Yeah, I learned my lesson," Addison scoffed while shaking her head.

*

"Doctor Karev," Addison spoke to the intern.  "There you are.  You are supposed to be up in OBGYN checking on my patients."

"Oh yeah, I got paged for 911 call.  Pregnant mom in a car accident, very serious."

"I've got three surgeries on the board I was gonna ask you to scrub in.  But I guess you should stay by that pregnant woman's side all day.  You see to it, Doctor Bailey," Addison gave Karev a smirk before she walked off.

*

"What did you use on Karev this time?" Alison asked as she looked over at the smug brunette doctor.

"I don't know what you're talking about, Doctor Anderson."

"Mhm.  Well, whatever you said it worked.  Here he comes now."

"Ah, perfect timing Karev," Doctor Montgomery-Shepherd gloated as she saw the intern making Alison look up.

"Doctor Montgomery-Shepherd, Doctor Anderson we need you both and fast."

This woman was so young and had the world at her feet one moment with a loving husband and a baby on the way.  Then the next a car crashed right into them, a doctor from Mercy West no less.  It was as though it was instant.  Alison wondered how this woman survived this long being alive in the ER room.

It was a miracle in itself.

"More suction here," Doctor Webber instructed and they did as told.  "Clamp."

"Karev, sit down," Addison instructed the intern.

"What I want you to do is sit at that fetal monitor and watch that baby's heart rate."

"I'm not your baby sitter."

Karev had a sour face on him as he wanted to be apart of this surgery too.  But because Addison was torturing him he had to suffer from not being apart of the team who worked on Mel.  Alison noticed a drop in the baby's heartbeat and in Mel's.  She knew right then and there that she needed to get her out now.

"Wait, Doctor Anderson," Addison called out to the young doctor which made the blonde turn around to face the brunette with a determined expression.

"If we don't get in there now, that baby is going to die.  So no.  I am not going to wait.  This mother may or may not have a chance to live but I am not giving up on this baby when he hasn't even had his first breath.  Scalpel," she instructed and was handed it by Karev.

Karev had a smirk on his face as he looked over his shoulder to the brunette.  Alison had the scalpel in her hand as she made the cut on Mel's stomach to try and get the baby out. She knew that she didn't have that long as the other team of doctors were working around her. She had taken deep breaths in and out to calm her nerves before she had scrubbed in knowing that Mel's injuries were catastrophic.

Alison was able to get the baby out just in time as the young mother started to decline as the machines started going off.  Everyone started to work fast but by then it was too late as the baby was then passed to one of the nurses to get checked out and cleaned off.

Mel had flatlined.

Alison closed her eyes as they had to call her time of death but no one wanted to until it was called.  Someone would have to tell the news to her family that her baby lived but she did not.

"Hey, do you have a date to the "prom" yet?" Addison asked her coworker as she put the word prom in quotation marks.

They were in the outside courtyard eating their caesar salads and club sandwiches with a side of a fruit bowl.

"No, why?" Alison asked with furrowed eyebrows.

"I have this really great guy I want you to meet," Addison told the blonde.

"No," Alison let out a laugh that wasn't a happy one.

"You haven't even heard who it is yet," Addison pointed out.

"Still not interested."

"Oh come on.  It was one time where I set you up with a bad date.  Otherwise they've been good right?"

"I told myself I was never going to have you set me up with another guy after the last one."

"He wasn't that bad."

"He talked about his dead wife the entire date.  Then he didn't even pay for the meal.  So no, no and no."

"What about this guy?" She took her phone out and handed it to the young doctor.

He was handsome.  He had a beard and looked familiar as well.  His brown eyes making them look soft as his short hair was parted to the side.  She knew from what Addison was saying to her as she looked at the picture was that his name was Anthony and he worked as a lawyer.

"Why does he look so familiar?"

"This was the guy I was going to set you up with when I first moved down here.  You turned down the opportunity."

"Okay," she let out a sigh.  "I'll go to the prom with him."

She wasn't going to tell her that it was because she hated her prom.  She didn't even have a date for her own.  She went to her prom for a few minutes then left since all of her friends ditched her the minute they got to the building.

"Perfect, I'll let him know."

"Don't make me regret this," Alison shouted as Addison was leaving the room.

"Hey, Doctor Burke," greeted the older doctor as she was in her Disney scrubs today making him laugh slightly shaking his head in amusement.  He always loved seeing what kind of scrubs she wore that day as since she was Peds she was able to wear different prints if she wanted.

"Wendy Darling.  What brings you up here?"

"Maybe you can help me out and in turn I help you out."

"I'm listening," he replied leaning forward against the desk.

"Your patient - Denny Duquette what do you know of Doctor Izzie Stevens relationship with him?"  She asked making him stand up straighter.

"All I know is that they seem to be getting along and he really values her opinion sometimes over the other interns more."

"Have you noticed anything out of the ordinary?  Like hugging, their hands touching, flirting. . ."

"Doctor Anderson are you insinuating that something is going on behind my back?"

"Well, I certainly hope not Doctor Burke.  Because I for one love Doctor Izzie Stevens and I would hate to see something bad happen to her.  I don't want anything bad to happen to her," she murmurs quietly.

"I know Wendy Darling, I know.  I'll keep an eye out and try to stop them from getting too attached."

"Thank you," she murmured and began to walk away.

"Wait," Doctor Burke called out as she turned around walking backwards.  "What about helping me out?"

"I am," she called out since there weren't other doctors around.  "By not making anything happen to her!"

Doctor Alison Anderson had missed seeing Doctor Izzie Stevens on the Peds floor the last couple of weeks.  It seemed as though she was attached to the hip with patient Denny Duquette.  She could see why too.  Curiosity got the better of her and one day when Addison was busy she slipped up to the floor where Denny was and had a look through the blinds of the window in the room of where Denny was staying.  There she had also caught Doctor Izzie Stevens laying with him in bed with his arm over hers.  She might have aw'ed at the moment if it weren't so much against their code of ethics.

Denny Duquette was handsome.

In another life - somehow, someway, if Izzie Stevens weren't a doctor and Denny didn't have a failing heart she could see them meeting somewhere.  She wasn't sure what Denny did for a living but he looked like a photographer and wondered if they might meet at a photoshoot he was doing for Izzie.  They would date for less than a year and he would propose to her because he loved her so fucking much.  He was a very impatient man to wait more than a year before proposing to the blonde.  They would then find out that they were pregnant with twins and live a happy life.  Obviously some health problems along the way and maybe even some marriage problems with Izzie being a model and traveling.  But in the end, they would be really really happy and she would decide that she wanted to settle down from the life of the rich and famous and focus on their little family.

Either that or they were happily married being together without children traveling the world because he was too selfish to share her with anyone else.

The next day, Doctor Anderson couldn't help herself.  She was itching to do it all week and decided enough was enough.  She went back to the same floor Denny was at as she knew that none of the interns were there at this time, especially Izzie.  Alison had to meet the man herself.  Knocking on his door the man looked over in her direction with a confused look on his face.  His brown hair was kind of shaggy going over his ears and flicking upwards at the ends.  He was also growing a five o'clock shadow on his face as well.

"Knock, knock," Alison greeted the patient.

"Hello," he politely smiled at her unsure of who she was but knew she was a doctor which was obvious due to her attire and pink stethoscope around her neck.  "Either you are on the wrong floor or you are now my doctor in which I am not complaining."

"Very funny," she laughed at his joke and stuffed her hands in her white lab coat as they were a bit chilly.  "But no, no.  I actually came up here because I wanted to meet you."

"You wanted to meet me?"

"Yes," she smiled at him a genuine one to which he gave one back.  She reached her small dainty hand out to which he shook.  "Hello, I'm Alison but most people just call me Ali or any other kind of nickname they can think of," she let out a contagious laugh.

"Hi, I'm Denny.  I'm not sure why you want to meet me though."

"I've heard a lot about you from Doctor Burke, Denny Duquette."

"Ah, so is it a normal thing?"

"What?"

"That you doctors talk about us patients?"

"Only the good ones," she sent him a wink to which he laughed.

"So what floor do you work on?  Can I guess it might be the little kid floor?"

"Your guess might be correct," she teased back.  "What gave it away?"

"The scrubs," he said with a deadpan facial expression.

"Oh yes, so what do you think?"

"I'm not much of a Disney person but I have to say the scrubs suit you.  I like that they have all of the Disney characters and not just one from a movie."

"So what do you like?"

"I like action movies.  Maybe a little romance.  You can never go wrong with that."

"Oh no, definitely not.  Well, it was very nice meeting you Denny Duquette."

"It was nice meeting you as well, Doctor Anderson," he flashed her a smile as he laughed.

*

"I can see why you like him," Alison commented to Izzie as she was writing something down in her patients chart.

Izzie froze.  She hadn't realized she had been so obvious with her attraction to her patient and she knows exactly who Doctor Alison Anderson is talking about.  No one else important was around them so Alison felt she could speak freely to her.

"You like Denny, right?"

Izzie swallowed hard at first then nodded her head slowly.

"I can see why you do.  He's handsome and funny.  Besides, when I looked in the window the other day in his room you guys looked cute together.  Just please don't do anything stupid, Izzie.  You're a fabulous doctor and I would hate to see someone with that much talent leave because they fell for a patient.  Especially someone who has the potential in Peds.  I miss you up there on that floor by the way," she tells her and then walks off feeling good of what she told Izzie.

Alison normally never cared about gossip but when that gossip included one of the interns she grew worried.  She hoped that Izzie would be able to think properly and not with just her heart in this case.  Alison had seen so much potential in Doctor Izzie Stevens and she hoped her talk would help take her on the right path - whichever that may be for Izzie.

-

Point taken.  It's like a lightning bolt goes on through that person's head and its like a flight or fight situation.  You either use those personas to get yourself out of a mess that you yourself single handedly created or you create an even bigger mess and don't own up to your mistakes.  Either way, that somehow makes you the person who is in the wrong and no one likes that.  Especially the people who are having to deal with it.
