Making the Impossible - Possible

"Mark, do you feel the baby?" Alison asked him, excited as they lay in their bed and his strong hands were roaming Alison's baby bump.

They could literally see a part of the baby's body moving alongside her bump as the couple stared at her bump in amazement.  Alison couldn't believe she was actually at twenty-nine weeks now!  It was insane how fast it was approaching that baby would be here.  She still didn't have any stretch marks on her stomach yet (thank you very much Bio oil), but she noticed that she was starting to get them underneath the lower boob area.  This made her realize she needed to start applying the Bio oil there too.  Thankfully during the second trimester and beginning of her now third trimester, her boobs stopped hurting which helped her so much during surgery.

Just recently she bought a full body pregnancy pillow and she thought it was the best thing ever.  If Mark were being honest though, he hated the thought when she used the pillow instead of cuddling into him.  He was jealous of a pillow.  He wondered what his life was coming to now.

The couple couldn't believe she was eleven weeks away from her due date!  It seemed like it was vastly approaching.

"Yeah," Mark said and he felt a swift kick to the palm of his hand and grinned.  "Damn.  What does it feel like to you?"

"It feels like a flutter," she laughed as she felt the kick again and rubbed her stomach.  "Okay baby, but you need to calm down a little today and let mommy work today."

"I gotta take a picture of you today," Mark told his fiance and she got out of their bed and was wearing her Calvin Klein bra and panties as she held her bump.

"You know I think you could have been a professional photographer with how good these look," Alison complimented him with a kiss.

It was wild how much her bump changed within a week even.  Every week her bump seemed to be getting bigger and bigger and the couple was loving every minute of it.  Except now, her hands were starting to swell and she was no longer able to wear her engagement ring and instead she wore it as a necklace.  Everyone knew at the hospital that she was engaged to Mark though so there was no concern there.

"Thanks babe," he grinned at her and placed his hands on her bump and placed a kiss on it as she ran her fingers through his hair.  "I love you."

"I love you too," she grinned at how he was being loving and caring.  "Time for a quickie?"

"Always with you," he smirked at her and laid her back on their bed.

"So are we screwing other people or not?" Alex asked Izzie as she woke up.

"What?" She asked shocked.

"I just want to know if you're gonna go off screw O'Malley or some other loser," Alex explained as he got up from the bed.  "Because then I don't have to cancel my plans with the chick from Peds."

"You're an ass," Izzie told him as she laughed in disbelief and got out of bed and walked out.

"What?" He asked confused.

*

"That was amazing," Erica said as both of them laughed in bed.

"Yay," Callie exclaimed, happy that watching the porn worked.  "That was for me too," she told Erica and leaned up to kiss her.

"I mean that was amazing," Erica said again with more emphasis this time.

"For me too," Callie laughed and got out of bed to put her clothes on.

"My whole life.  My whole adult life I have been with men and it always felt you know, fine.  Good.  But I never, I did, but like this.  This is like needing glasses."

"I blinded you?" Callie laughed at Erica's comment, not understanding it.

"No, when I was a kid, I would get these headaches.  I went to the doctor and they said I needed glasses.  I didn't understand that - it didn't make sense to me because I could see fine and I get the glasses, I put them on and I'm in the car on the way home.  And suddenly, I yell.  Because the big green blobs that I had been staring at my whole life they weren't big green blobs.  They were leaves.  On trees.  I could see the leaves.  And I didn't even know I was missing the leaves.  I didn't even know that leaves existed and then leaves," she emphasized again.  "You are glasses," she told Callie as she teared up a bit as she let out a small laugh.  "I am so gay.  I am so so so so gay.  I am extremely gay."

"Um-" Callie said unsure of what to say because she didn't exactly feel the same way as Erica.  "I have to go."

Alison wore her blonde hair up in a french braid today to get it out of her face as she knew that she didn't want to mess with it today.  She was talking to Mark and Derek near the elevator when Richard called for them.

"Ah Mark, Derek and Alison," he greeted the trio.  "I want you to meet the new head of trauma at Seattle Grace.  Major Owen Hunt this Derek Shepherd, Mark Sloan and Alison Anderson," he introduced all of them as they shook hands.

"He stole my patient," Derek told Mark and Alison rolled her eyes.

"Mine too," Mark said and she smacked his arm playfully which made him look at her.  "What?  It's true."

"Be nice," she scolded the two.

"Now you'll get a chance to steal mine," Owen told them.

"Looking forward to it," Derek smiled at him.

"Can't wait," Mark chimed in.

"I just talked to a friend of mine at the DOH and now that we have Owen we are being reclassified as a level one trauma unit by the end of the month," he told the three as Alison ate a bite of her apple.

"That explains it," Derek said as the elevator dinged.

"Oh, some new faces around here, good," Alison said excited.  "I'm glad you decided to stay.  Hey, if you're not doing anything next Saturday, I'm having my baby shower then.  Your more then welcome to come-" she tried to finish but Mark pulled her into the elevator along with him and Derek and she let out a huff.

"She seems nice," Owen told Richard.

"Alison?  She's the best Peds surgeon I've ever had after Addison of course."

*

"You paged me, chief?" Miranda asked Richard as they were on top of the building.

"Yes, I did."

"Because generally when I'm paged to the helipad there's something landing on the helipad."

"You pulled off a twelve person domino surgery last week," Richard explained to her.  "That's the kind of thing we need every week.  It's also the kind of thing that shows me your gonna be a great surgeon some day."

"Oh, thank you sir," Miranda said in regards to his compliment of her.

"That's not enough.  I don't want you to be just great, Miranda.  I want you to be the best and if you're gonna succeed me as the best general surgeon in this hospital you need to start now.  Today.  Which means you need to be me.  You want to take point on a surgery take point.  Problem comes up solve it.  Don't talk to me, just do it.  Be me."

"Be you?" She asked to confirm.

"Be me," he confirmed.

"I can do that.  I don't even know why you had to bring me all the way up here to-"

"That's why," Richard said as he pointed up to the sky as a helicopter was coming up.  "They're bringing in a ten-year old girl with an abdominal leiomyosarcoma.  Its inoperable.  Your task is to put together a team and come up with a plan to save her," Richard told Miranda.

"Save a girl with an inoperable tumor?" She exclaimed.

"It isn't easy being me," Richard explained to Miranda.

*

"Oh Lexie," George tries to call out to his roommate.  "Will you mind picking up-" he stopped talking once he realized she was ignoring him.  "Lex, I'm your roommate, eventually you're gonna have to talk to me."

"I reject that disposition," Lexie said as Meredith and Cristina walked in and were confused what was happening.

"I reject your rejection," he told her.

"And I reject your rejection of my rejection," Lexie said.

"I don't reject you, George," Meredith told him.

"Thank you," he told her as they filed into their locker room with Miranda right behind.

"Okay, two things.  You all have a skills lab this morning.  It is mandatory, don't even think about trying to get out.  Second, one of you will not have to go to the mandatory skills lab because you will be assisting me and my efforts to remove an inoperable tumor from a ten-year-old girl," she told the residents as they all raised their hands.

"I'll do it," George spoke up before anyone else could.

"No you won't.  You have a hundred delinquent charts, you will do those.  After lab."

"Slacker," Cristina commented to George.

"How can you operate on an inoperable tumor?" Alex asked Miranda.

"Karev is also out," Miranda said.

"What did I say?" He asked confused.

"You doubted me."

"Oh I- I don't doubt you, Doctor Bailey," Cristina told her.

"Yang is out too."

"Why?"

"You weren't supportive of a fellow resident who couldn't get his paperwork under control.  What is that, Grey?  Is that Anatomy Jane?" Miranda asks Meredith.

"Yes."

"With the twenty-four removable organs and optional parts to simulate pregnancy?"

"Yes.  Does that mean I'm out too?"

"No.  That means you're in," she says and turns to leave as the other residents let out groans of disappointment.

"That's not fair," Izzie exclaims.

"Next time you'll know to bring in an ugly doll, won't you Stevens?" Miranda said to the resident and left to make her way up to the Peds floor to see a certain blonde.

The blonde was filling out some of her patients chart at the nursing desk as she ate peach rings, sneaking them out of the pocket of her white lab coat which made the resident chuckle as she would occasionally rub her bump.

"And there's just the blonde I was looking for," Miranda said with a smile as she walked up to her.  "Eating peach rings out of your lab coat," she shook her head, laughing.

"Want one, Doctor Bailey?" Alison asked as she took one out and Miranda took it from her.

"Thank you," she said as she ate it.

"You're welcome," she smiled at her.  "What can I help you with?"

"What makes you think I need something?  Can I not just come up here visiting my favorite Peds surgeon?"

"Well, you can.  But you and I both know you don't normally come up here," she laughed, eating another peach ring and handed another to Miranda.

"Alright, you know me so well.  I have a ten-year-old girl here who has an inoperable tumor and I want you on my team."

"Okay," she said with a smile.

"Really?" Miranda asked shocked that she said yes so easily.

"Yeah, I like a challenge and I trust you."

"I knew I always liked you plus you give out free candy," she smiled at the fellow and held her hand out for another as Alison reached in her coat pocket and gave her another before she left.

*

"Tori Begler, age ten," Meredith introduces her case to everyone.  "Tori has an abdominal leiomyosarcoma.  The tumor is wrapped around the celiac artery, splenic artery, and her left gastric artery," Alison and Miranda gave Tori a small smile as they both knew that was not how it is done in Peds.  "It's considered unresectable."

"Did you understand a word of that, Tori?" Miranda asked their patient.

"Not really," she confessed which made Miranda and Alison laugh slightly.

"Grey," Miranda said wanting Meredith to sit on the patients bed and she brought out Anatomy Jane.  "This is Anatomy Jane," Meredith said as realization dawned on Richard.

"She's kind of funny looking," Tori said.

"She is funny looking but she's very helpful.  The tumor is way down here in your belly," she explains to Tori.  "It's hard to get at because it's under all these organs."

"Hard but not impossible, right?" Tori's dad asks.

"We're gonna try everything we can," Richard reassures the family.

"Everything you can should include your cardiothoracic gal," the grandmother told him which surprised the doctors in the room.  "Doctor Stewart at Seattle Press said cardiovascular is the big problem and you stole the best cardiovascular surgeon he's ever had.  If she's not on Tori's team we're leaving and going to San Francisco.  Fudge?  It's homemade," the grandmother says as she lifts the lid open.

"Oh, I'll have one," Alison said as she took one out and thanked the grandmother as she ate it.  "This is so good.  You should try one, Doctor Bai-" but then she stopped when she saw Miranda was not amused and instead shocked by what the patient's grandmother said.  She still continued to eat the fudge as everyone looked disappointed.

*

Alison was in the other room as she couldn't be in the cath lab since she was pregnant when she heard saw the door open all of a sudden and two people she had never seen before came in.

"Uh, I'm sorry but you two can't be in here," Alison tried to tell them but they wouldn't listen and then Miranda saw them as well as she came up to the window.

"Hello, you can't be in here," Miranda tells them and they don't say anything.

"That's my uncle and aunt," Tori explained to Miranda.  "They like to make sure I don't get lonely," she said.

"She's not lonely," Miranda told the couple.  "Doctor Grey and I are very entertaining," she said and Tori let out a small cough.  "Okay, fine.  They have to stay there though.  There's radiation in here," she told them and they understood as she went back to Meredith.  "Alright, let's inject dye.

They were shocked how much it had extended.

*

"Now before I ask Doctor Hahn to be on my team I want to make sure you are okay with it," Miranda said to Alison.

"Doctor Bailey, I'm okay with it, really.  You don't even have to ask me.  I can work with her.  I just want what is best for that patient and if the family is requesting her to be on the team then so be it."

"Okay then," Miranda smiled at the Peds surgeon with her maturity.  "Get ready to change that patients life."

"It's a beautiful day to be alive, Doctor Bailey," Alison grinned.

"Yes, it is, Alison," she grinned at the blonde and left to go find Erica.

"Hi," George said awkwardly to Alison as he approached her.

He knew she was Lexie's good friend lately and wasn't sure how welcoming she would be towards him.  Especially with him and Lexie not talking at the moment.  He was sure that she knew what was going on.

"Hi George," she smiled kindly at him which surprised him as he wasn't expecting it.

"I know that you're busy today operating on an inoperable tumor and all but I think you know what's going on with Lexie and I."

"Yeah," she nodded her head.

"Is she going to be okay?"

"I think so.  She just needs some time," Alison told him.  "She'll come to you when she's ready."

"Thank you," he smiled awkwardly at her and she smiled back.

*

"You paged me?" Erica asked Miranda.

"I've got a ten-year-old girl with a tumor wrapped around her aorta.  I'm putting together a team," Miranda explained to her.

"This is her angio?  This things wrapped around five major arteries."

"It's bad.  I've got a couple of ideas," Miranda tells her.

"Good for you.  Try them on someone who might actually live."

"I admit, it doesn't look great.  Her family mentioned you by name-"

"That's nice but I really don't care."

"Well I do," Miranda said not liking Erica's attitude and tone of voice.

"Don't get emotional, Bailey.  No one likes a girl who gets emotional."

"Still," Miranda said.  "I'd like you on my team."

*

"What are you?  Can I help you gentlemen?" Owen asked Mark and Derek.

"Karev paged us," Mark told him.

"He shouldn't have.  We got it covered, thanks."

"You have a head injury and burns.  I don't think you have it covered," Derek told him.

"Karev are you a doctor?" Owen asked Alex.

"Yes sir."

"Are you capable of assessing a patient's injuries?" He asked.

"Yep!"

"Like I said, got it covered," Owen told them.

"You know what, we're here.  Why don't you just let us dive in?"

"I appreciate the offer Shepherd, but I want my residents to learn with trauma.  They're not going to learn as much or as fast if they stand back and watch the attending's do it.  Unless that attending is me," Owen said and left to go back to his patient which made the two attending's annoyed and leave.

*

"Three other hospitals have already sent them away," Erica explained to the group.  "And if we were smart we would do the same thing."

"What is the matter with you?" Miranda asked Erica, annoyed at her attitude and Alison was glad that someone finally spoke up to her.

Meredith was ignoring what everyone was saying as she was using Anatomy Jane to help her come up with a solution.

"We can try and cut around her stomach," Richard said.

"No, the only way to do that is to actually take it out."

"What if we did a surgical incision and removal of the entire tumor and the surrounding tissue?" Alison said coming with an idea as well.

"She needs all of that extra tissue," Erica complained, not liking any of the ideas.

"So why don't we take out the stomach and the kidney's?" Meredith asked.

"Oh yeah, that would be great if you were to kill her," Erica replied snarky.  "We're talking about two completely different blood supplies here, so no.  Not a good idea, Grey.  Who are those people?" Erica asked annoyed.

"Uh, that's Tori's dad Randy, and his brother Pat and Pat's wife Gene.  And Tori's brother David-" Miranda began to say.

"Why are they staring at us, Doctor Bailey?" Richard asked.

"I don't think they're staring at us chief," Miranda explained.  "I think they're just waiting.  Seeing if we have any news," she said as Richard's pager started to beep.

"Try and come up with something before I get back," Richard told the group.

"Close the blinds, Grey," Erica told the resident pissed off as Alison shared a look with Miranda.

*

"Any luck?" Richard asked the group.

"What do you think?" Erica snapped.  "Look I know you want to be number one Richard, but we can't take in every charity case that comes along.  It is a huge waste of resources."

"So if you were to get leiomyosarcoma some day what would you want us to do?" Alison asked Erica, finally snapping back at her.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me.  You would want us to not give up, right?  You would want us to come up with every possible measure we could come up with because that's what we do.  We're doctors.  I don't care what's going on in your personal life because I'm sure that's why you are treating us all like shit today.  Think of the patient!  You are a great cardiothoracic surgeon.  Act like one."

"It's your call, Doctor Bailey," Richard told Miranda after a few moments of silence as the group took in what Alison said.  "Grey, put that away!  This isn't play time."

"I'm not playing.  I'm thinking.  What if we just took out each of the organs where the tumor interferes with the blood supply?" She asked.

"By the time you clamp off the aorta you run the risk of damaging the other organs," Erica told the blonde.

"Even if you take them out one by one?"

"We don't have the time, Grey," Erica said and Alison rolled her eyes.

"Well what about if we made the time?" Richard asked.  "Doctor Bailey, let's throw some stuff up on the board."

*

"You want to take out all of her abdominal organs?  Intestines, stomach, everything?" The mother asked the group of surgeons.

"All at once?" The father asked.

"That's right," Richard said.

"We'll put the organs on ice while we dissect out the tumor.  Then reconnect the vessels using synthetic graphs and put the organs back in," Miranda told the family.

"Why didn't the doctors over at Lake Washington suggest this?  They're a couple of smarties," the grandma asked.

"Probably because it's never been done before," Richard said making the family nervous.

"It is extremely risky.  There are any number of things that could go wrong," Erica said.

"I don't know, Randy," the wife said to her husband.  "Maybe we should try more chemo."

"With all due respect, Missus Begler, I don't think there's time for that," Miranda told the mom in a caring way.

"Is it going to save her life?" The dad asked.

"It's your best shot," Richard said.  "Your only shot."

"Then do it."

*

"You okay?" Mark asked Alison as he knew she was getting ready to scrub in for surgery.

"I'm kind of freaking out a little," she said.

"What's wrong?" He asked as he brought her closer to him and ran his hands up and down her arms soothingly, knowing it would help calm her down.

"I'm getting ready to take out six organs of a ten-year-old girl who has a tumor."

"And you'll kick ass at it," Mark assured her.

"But what if everything goes wrong?"

"And what if it doesn't?  You know you can do this and I know you can do this.  Bailey wouldn't have put you on her team for this if she didn't think you were capable of it."

"You think so?" She asked starting to calm down a bit.

"I know so.  And afterwards, I'll give you all the sex you want," he told her.

"Really?" She asked as her light colored eyes sparkled which made him laugh.

"Really.  I love you."

"I love you too, thank you," she told him and leaned on her tip toes to kiss him.

*

"I have a question," Meredith asked Richard as they began to wash their hands.  "Why aren't we taking out the kidney's since the left aorta arteries involved."

"Because we can remove the tumor without doing that," Richard told her while not looking at her.  "Why bother?"

"I have another question."

"Yes?"

"Why can't you look at me?"

"What?"

"You can't look at me," she told him.  "You haven't been able to look at me all day."

"I think you're imagining things," Richard said, still not looking at her.

"Oh, I don't think I am, but hey if you say so."

"I do," he said finally looking at her.  "I say so.  So instead of worrying about whether or not I'm looking at you maybe you should concentrate on a ten-year-old girl that were about to eviscerate," he told her and left just as Alison came in to scrub her hands.

*

"Okay Grey, why do we dissect down in quadrants?" Miranda asked the resident.

"So we can get a good look at the vessels and make sure we can get enough reconstruction," Meredith said.

"Very good," Meredith said.

"Suction ready right here," Richard told the group.

"Tori's dad is on the phone," a nurse said to Richard.  Wants to know if they can put him through?"

"No," Richard said.

"He's pretty insistent."

"And I'm pretty busy," Richard countered.

"If you could hold this up a little higher, Doctor Grey," Alison said.  "I want to make sure to avoid-" just then blood came squirtting out and the monitors started beeping.  "That."

"Okay let's get some clamps," Richard said out loud to anyone as other doctors and her family were watching from up above.  "Right there."

"Let's hang another bag of blood," Miranda said as Alison and the group were trying to stop the bleeding.

"You better hope the aorta's not that friable.  All the blood in the world won't save this girl," Erica remarked.

"Ready?" Miranda asked the group as the got the patients intestines out and were holding them. "One, two, three," she said and the group transferred them to the bowl.  "Wow."

"Mister Begler îs on the phone again," a nurse says to Richard.  "He wants to talk to you about his daughter."

"Well I'm pretty busy right now," Richard says, annoyed.

"I already told him that."

"Tell him again."

"I have eighteen times."

"Chief, you need to go talk to them," Miranda told him.

"It's alright, Chief," Alison said.  "We can handle it without you for a little bit," and Richard turns to look at the duo.

"Hey, you did put me in charge," Miranda sassed back and he lets out an annoyed sigh.

"I'll be back."

*

"What the hell?  Look at this crap," Derek told Mark as they were checking on their patient.

"Is that glue?" Mark asked Karev.  "You used skin glue?"

"Doctor Hunt wanted to get him out of the OR pretty quick," he explained.

"Yeah, well, because Doctor Hunt didn't have you revise the wound he could lose half of his face," Derek told Alex and Mark shook his head.

"You can't rotate a flap, you call someone who can," Mark says.

"He says ER is like being in the field.  You use what's available," he tries to justify.

"What qualifies us as a war zone, Karev?" Mark asks him.  "Our under man gift shop?  The luke warm drinks from the coffee cart?"

"He's a meatballer what do you expect?" Derek says to Mark.

"Meatballer?" Alex questions.

"Trauma guy.  They just slap it together," Mark explains.

*

"Doctor Webber, how's Tori?" The father asks concerned as soon as he sees Richard.

"She's stable.  We're removing the tumor right now," he tells her.  "Actually I should be in there to help but I'm out here instead."

"I just needed an update," the father tries to reason.

"That's not important that you get an update right now, sir," Richard tells him.  "What's important is the best doctors that we have in this hospital are focused on your daughter.  Calls don't help us focus.  Interruptions don't help us focus."

"I'm sorry.  I know we have been on your foot sometimes but we have been to a lot of hospitals.  And hospitals are not easy places to get information.  In fact, a lot of times it's impossible to even get a doctor to talk to you.  Or to get the doctors to talk to each other.  I don't know if it's neglect or ego's getting in the way and I don't care.  We're just trying to take care of our little girl.  She's ten.  She's scared and she's sick.  We're doing whatever we can," he tells Richard.

"Don't ever stop taking care of her like that," Richard tells him as they both come to an understanding and he left.

*

"Can you dissect out anymore?" Richard asked Alison.

"There's nothing to dissect.  There's barely any artery left," she told him.

"What about if we extend the cortex graft?" He asked.

"No way.  It's too friable," Erica told him.

"So we can't reconnect the organs to the vessels?" Meredith asked the group.

"At this point, no," Miranda said, now nervous about what they had decided to do.

"But if we can't reconnect the organs they won't reproduce and they'll just die."

"Yes, they will," Erica said having been the only one not for this procedure all along.

"Is it too late for a transplant?" Meredith asked.

"We'd have to find six organs in about eight hours," Erica said.

"It's too late for a transplant," Meredith said understanding it.

"And a gold star for Grey," Erica replied snarky.

"We could try to put in more Gore-tex," Miranda said trying to think of something.

"Even more synthetic material in her?" Erica asked, shooting it down.

"What about a saphenous vein graft?" Meredith asked.

"She's already getting isotonic.  That sort of thing has to be preplanned," Erica shot down another idea.

"So what's your idea?" Miranda asked with an attitude making Alison smile behind her mask.

"Excuse me?"

"Your good at shooting down every idea we come up with.  What's yours?"

"It was my idea not to do this in the first place, Doctor Bailey."

"Yeah, you made that very clear every chance you got," she said and Alison let out a small laugh as Meredith smiled at Alison, knowing she was enjoying this.

"Shut up!" Richard told the two.  "I don't care who had what idea and when.  Get over yourselves.  Shut up and talk to each other.  Remember why we became doctors in the first place.  Think about what Alison said earlier about doing everything we possibly can," Richard said.

"What about using human umbilical vein?" Alison asked the two surgeons as Meredith and Richard listened.  "You're ready to go."

"Okay, I like it," Richard says.  "Erica, what do you think?"

"It could work.  Its Doctor Bailey's call if she wants to do it."

"I do," she said strongly.

"In that case, let's do it," Richard told the group of women.

*

"Now release clamp," Miranda told them.

"No pulsation," Meredith said as they waited.

And then, finally.  There was a pulse.

"Complete," Miranda said and Alison let out a relieved sigh as the nurses in the OR room were happy and Alison looked up seeing that Tori's family was relieved as well.

"Everyone, hell of a job," Richard told the group and they let out laughter and happiness as they knew they did a job well done.

*

"Erica cried this morning.  In bed," Callie told Mark as they drank their coffees.  "After sex."

"That was a compliment," Mark told her.  "For you.  The crying was a compliment."

"It wasn't a compliment for me.  She was having a revelation," Callie explained further.  "Sex is awesome with Erica.  We've reached awesome.  But it's also awesome with guys."

"So what's the problem?" Mark asked not understanding.

"Guess I thought there should be a difference," Callie said.  "Between sleeping with Erica and sleeping with guys."

"There doesn't have to be a difference," Mark told her.  "It's okay to like both girls and guys."

"Yeah, but Erica, she knows she loves women.  Only women.  Does that make me bad?"

"No, it makes you bisexual.  It's called LGBTQ for a reason, Callie."

"So I can like both women and men and it's not a bad thing?"

"Not if it makes you happy.  Does it make you happy?"

"Yeah, yeah it does."

"Then your happiness is all that matters.  Alison has some cousins that are apart of the community also.  I can ask Alison to give you their numbers if you ever have any questions.  They're very nice."

"That would be great.  Thanks Mark."

"Of course.  Alison and I are here for you whenever you need to talk."

*

"Hunt, can I talk to you?" Derek asked Owen as him and Mark walked in the OR.

"Sure."

"Karev," Mark said in a way that was telling him to leave.

"No, he can stay," Owen told them.

"You want Karev to hear how you screwed up my head trauma?  That's fine with me."

"My job is to keep him alive.  That's what I did."

"No, what you did was maimed a guy for the rest of his life.  You're lucky I saved the blood supply," Derek told Owen.

"So what would you have done?" He asked.

"Well, you got a man with a deep scalp wound and two of the best surgeons in the country standing ten feet away from him.  I would have asked those two surgeons to step in," Mark told him honestly.  "That's what I would have done."

"Medically.  What would you have done medically so that I can do better?" He said humbly.  "Listen, I recognize there is different ways of doing things even the basics.  Over here, someone appears dead, you go to them.  In Iraq, if someone appears dead you don't go to them.  This is day one for me so if you think there is a better way then tell me and I'll listen."

Unfortunately Mark was beginning to see why Alison liked this guy.

"All three of you, great job," Richard tells Miranda, Alison and Erica as they are scrubbing their hands.

Miranda and Alison share a satisfied look on their faces, knowing they can sleep better tonight.

"Thank you," Alison tells him.  "If it weren't for Bailey though, I don't think this would have been able to happen.  She made it possible.  Good job everyone.  I've gotta go pick up my mom from the airport.  Have a good night!" She said as she slightly waddled out of the room.

"Thank you," Erica said to Richard which startled Miranda and she let out a snort.

"Is there a problem, Doctor Bailey?" Erica asked Miranda.

"Just find it hard to believe you're accepting congratulations considering you didn't want to do this operation in the first place.  Then when you finally did do it you fought me and Alison every step of the way."

"And yet you still had a world class heart surgeon on your side."

"You may be a fine surgeon.  God knows I know that.  But not today.  Today you were a pain in the ass.  A nay-saying, bullying, consistently negative bullying pain in the ass.  At no point did you encourage me or do anything to make me think the surgery could be anything but a failure.  And it wasn't just me.  You made it as hard as humanly possible for all of us.  So yeah, we did do a nice job today.  We did a great job today.  But that wasn't thanks to you.  That was thanks to me, the Chief, Alison and Meredith Grey.  And Anatomy Jane," she said leaving.

Lexie had just finished putting the dinner together at the table when George walked through the door.

"Sit," she told him and he did.

"Mac n' cheese," she said as she told him what was tonight's dinner and scooped some out for him.  "The box not the freezer.  I named the pigs today."

"I'm sorry but I don't know what that means," he said, confused.

"I take things personally.  I get too emotional.  There's no place for it at work.  Not with the pigs and not with you.  I'm sorry," she told him sincerely and he began to eat the dinner.

"This is so much better than the freezer kind," George told her and she smiled.

Alison was now changed out of her work clothes and into the most comfortable pair of pregnancy leggings she had ever had along with one of Mark's shirts.  Alison paired them with her Tory Burch vintage vachetta miller sandal's.  She had gone to Crumbl Cookies right after she got off work to get some cookies because she knew her mom loved them and she couldn't help it right now that she was pregnant.

She was officially relaxed after their hours of sex just like Mark had promised.

Mark was currently driving on their way to the airport as his right hand was rested on her left thigh.

"You excited to see your mom again?" He asked his fiance as he looked at her for a quick second before turning his focus back on the road again.

"Yes, I can't believe it's been since Thanksgiving that I've seen her.  Are you?"

"I love you mom," Mark tells her honestly.

"She loves you too.  I think you're her favorite soon-to-be in-law honestly."

"I love your mom," he said with a smile as he turned up the volume on Alison's spotify playlist that was blasting through the radio.  She was currently listening to her romantic mix playlist that someone had created and the song playing was Full Circle by AHI.  "She's great.  And don't get me started on her cookies."

Alison's family was the family he never got to have with his.  His parents were always busy and he was an only child.  Derek was his family once he met him and now Alison.  One thing he knew for certain that him and Alison agreed on was that they wanted this baby to be so loved.  They wanted him to be loved and Mark wanted to be there for him.  He was scared as hell because he had no prior experience what a loving family was supposed to look like but he also knew Alison was scared too being a first time mom.  They would get through this together.

They finally made it to the airport but they had to circle a few times since they hadn't spotted her mom yet.  It wasn't until the fourth circle did Alison see her mom and Mark pulled over to an empty spot as he put the car in park and the couple got out.

"Hey mom," Alison said, happy with a smile on her face as she greeted her mom with a hug as Mark was putting away the suitcases.  "I missed you."

"I missed you too," her mom told her and put her hand on her bump.  "Your getting bigger.  Your bump is so cute."

"Thanks mom."

"Hey Madelyn, it's good to see you," Mark greeted Alison's mom with a hug.

"It's so good to see you too," she told him after they hugged and got in the car on the way home.

Izzie's room opened and Alex popped in.

"Thought you were sleeping with Michelle tonight.  Or was it Jackie?" Izzie asked Alex.

"Iz-"

"I've a hard day Alex.  And a sad night so can you please just leave me alone?" She asked.

"Izzie."

"What?"

"I'm not good at this.  Alright?  I'm not good at relationships or talking about stupid feelings and you are so maybe you could teach me or something, you know?  Tell me what I did wrong."

"You don't want us to see other people," Izzie said as realization dawned on her.  "You don't want us to see other people and that's how you tried to tell me.  By asking if it was cool if you screw Michelle," she laughed as she spoke.

"Laughing's not helping," Alex said and began to leave but she held him back.

"I'm sorry.  I'm sorry," she said as she leaned forward and kissed him.  "So you want lessons, huh?"

"I want lessons," he agreed.

"Okay.  You start with Isobel Stevens you are staggeringly good in bed.  You're amazingly smart.  Wonderfully funny.  You care about animals."

"That's where I start?"

"Yeah.  And then you say, you want to go steady with me?"

"That's what I would say if it were 1952," he told her and kissed her again.

"Alex," she asked him as she broke away from the kiss.

"Yeah?"

"You want to go steady with me?" She asked with a smile.

"If that's what you want.  Then yeah, whatever."

Alison was going to have a few days taken off to spend time with her mom so while Mark was at work she could take her mom places.  She also had an appointment this week to see baby again and just go over anything she had questions about which her mom would be accompanying the couple.

Baby was having hiccups and Alison thought it was just the cutest thing ever but it was also the strangest feeling.  It feels like a little thud in her stomach that would only last a couple of seconds and happen only a couple times.

"You want to see what we've done to the nursery so far?" Alison asked her mom as she soothingly rubbed her baby bump.

"Yes," Madelyn said with excitement and left her cookie and wine glass on the counter as she followed her daughter towards the baby's room.  Mark stayed behind as he was watching a Golden State Warriors game that was playing low in the background.

"Oh also the furniture set you bought us from Buy Buy Baby came and Mark put it all together," Alison grinned.

"I can't wait to see it," Madelyn smiled as she smoothed down her daughter's hair.

"This is it," Alison said as she came to a stop and were in the front of the room as she opened it.

They had done a little bit here and there with the baby's nursery.  Earlier on they had painted the nursery a beautiful blue-grey color.  They didn't want to go with the normal blue color and instead wanted something more calming and neutral.  They also had diaper genie that was right next to the furniture and Alison had been folding and hanging up some of the clothes she and Mark had bought so far.  The couple knew what kind of theme they wanted for their baby and they had gotten some things here and there.

It was a Peter Pan theme.

She had some standing wall shelves in one area that had a few things on it already.  Their sat laying face down on the shelf were three different versions of the Peter Pan book.  On the books was a Peter Pan hat and baby booties to match the outfit Peter wore.  There was also a small stuffed alligator and a small clock.

They also had a small globe with in gold lettering cursive font had the quote:

to live would be an awfully big adventure.

They also had a small picture quote with gold frame that read, "all you need is faith, trust and pixie dust."  In the middle between the globe and the picture was a small message in a bottle.

They had his crib all set up as well that took Mark and Derek ages to get done but finally after ten hours it was complete.  Next to the crib was a small teepee that she had bought from Target.  Inside the teepee was a small white fluffy rug along with two Peter Pan theme pillows.  One was a map of Neverland and the other was a quote from the movie.

Above the changing table area were three pictures.  One was a Lost Boys water color illustration, another was a watercolor quote that she made when she had found the time, and lastly a Pixie Dust Peter Pan dictionary print picture.

Next to the closet was a wall shelf that a small ship.  She also had a little picture of their baby as an embryo from one of her ultrasound pictures and another of Mark and her.  There was a bookshelf in the nursery as well with a few books that she had already but she couldn't wait for her baby shower on Saturday.  Instead of getting them a card, she asked that everyone brings a book.  Alison just hoped it wasn't all doctor books for little kids.

"Oh Alison, this is just so cute," her mother gushed as she put a hand to her heart.  "I can't wait until he's here."

"Thanks mom," she smiled at her.  "Oh and I'm not sure if you noticed or not but," she opened the closet back open again and went through the hangers.  "Recognize these?"

She was referring to the newborn onesies and six to nine month old onesies of Army and Marine's on them.

"From your Dad and your brothers?"

"Yep," she nodded her head with a smile and closed the closet door as she followed her mom out of the room, turning off the light and closing the door.

"So, what'd you think of the nursery?" Mark asked his soon to be mother-in-law as Alison stood next to him eating a maple cinnamon roll cookie from Crumbl.

"It's beautiful.  I'm so excited for you and Alison to have your own little one."

Thought I would end it here at 7,000 words.  Super excited for the next few chapters.

What do you think little one's name will be?

Also I hope the added part I wrote in about the LGBTQ community with Callie and Mark was okay.  I feel like in a way the writers failed at this part to make mention that it's okay to like both.  They definitely could have done more with Callie coming to terms with her sexuality and that's why I wanted to add this.
