Chapter Four: Coffee & Unexpected Visits

Night shifts were the bane of Jolene's existence, the hours always dragged on ridiculously slow. The brunette tossed her blood stained gloves into the garbage and began washing her hands. Jolene had just finished stitching up a teenage, who thought it would be a good idea to break into his neighbor's home and try to steal some money, clearly forgetting his neighbor owned a dog that wasn't afraid to protect his owner's house.

Jolene looked up at the large clock that hung on the wall, the hands moving ever so slowly, taunting her. She still had four hours left of her shift, the thought causing her to let out a small groan. The brunette turned the water off, shaking the excess water from her hands before wiping them off on the flimsy hospital paper towels. She took a deep breath looking at herself in the streaky bathroom mirror, reminding herself it was only four more hours.

Hi, Natalie." Jolene smiled at the older red haired nurse as she walked up to the nurses station. The older woman was a nurse at St. Thomas for as long Jolene could remember. She was tough as hell and didn't sugarcoat her words, something Jolene admired her for.

"Hello, Doctor Delaney." The red head spoke in a formal voice. "I have some charts that need your signature." She placed a few charts down on the counter before starting a conversation with the nurse next to her.

Jolene's dark eyes looked over the charts in front of her, she signed each one in her cliche unreadable doctor handwriting. "All done." She said, tapping her fingers against the newly signed charts.

"Thank you, Doctor Delaney." Natalie nodded, grabbing the charts and returning to her conversation, not bothering to give Jolene a second glance.

The doctor grabbed her phone from out of her pocket and sent a quick text to her mother while she had the time. Jolene places her phone back into her pocket once she received a text back, letting her know Mateo was fine and sleeping soundly. Whenever she had a night shift Mateo spent the night with either Gemma or her mom. To say she was thankful for those two women would be a huge understatement.

"I thought you might need this." A coffee cup appeared in front of Jolene. She watched Camilla took over the seat the Natalie once occupied, a smile on the younger woman's face. "I got it from that coffee place down the street so don't worry about it tasting like dirt." Camilla laughed knowing how much Jolene hated the hospital's coffee, yet the doctor continued to drink it anyway.

"Oh thank god! You're the best." Jolene smiled thankfully, taking a long sip of the sweet coffee. Camilla was new to Charming and St. Thomas, only having been in the small town for about six months. Jolene liked her the moment she met her. "Thanks again for the coffee, Cam." The doctor gave the nurse another grateful smile before walking off to continue the remaining three and a half hours of her shift.

The hot water felt good on her skin. Jolene had arrived home a few minutes ago and immediately went into the shower, wanting to wash away the hospital's smell off of her skin. She stood under the steaming water for another minute before turning the water off and stepping out into the foggy bathroom, wrapping a large towel around her body. The brunette wiped away the steam that built up on the mirror, and began brushing through her tangled wet hair.

Once satisfied with her hair, Jolene tossed the towel into the laundry basket and pulled on an oversized black SAMCRO t-shirt and a pair of shorts. Jolene's dark eyes stared at her reflection in the mirror, a sigh escaping from her lips as her eyes focused on the shirt, it had been Happy's and no matter how many times she washed it, it still smelled like him. She took one last look before turning the light off and walking out of the bathroom.

A small shriek left her mouth as she stepped into the living room, spotting Happy sitting on the couch with a beer in his hand and the tv on a low volume. "What the fuck Happy?" Jolene our a hand over her heart, feeling it thumping around in her chest. "What are you doing here? Better yet, how did you get in here?" She asked, taking a deep breath to slow her heart rate down.

Happy turned his eyes away from the tv, a blank expression on his face as he held up a small silver key in his fingers. Jolene rolled her eyes as she walked into the kitchen, she had forgotten he still had a key. "That answers the how but, not the what." Her voice held a hint of sarcasm in it.

"Didn't feel like sleeping at the clubhouse." He rasped, his dark almost black eyes watching Jolene.

The brunette closed her eyes and let out a frustrated sigh while she filled up a glass of water. This wasn't the first time Happy had shown up unexpectedly and let himself in her home. A few months ago, he did this exact same thing, helping himself to her beer and couch. He always claimed it was because he didn't want to sleep at the clubhouse after the ride from Tacoma to Charming. Jolene being the idiot she was let him stay. He would leave before she woke up the next morning, which was okay with her. If he stayed things would get messy again.

"It's a good thing Mateo isn't here." She said before downing the cold glass of water. If Mateo had been there she would of sent Happy away. Jolene didn't want him getting confused, or getting his hopes up if he saw Happy spending the night there. "Actually, now that I think about it, Mateo wasn't home last time either." She placed the empty glass in the sink and walked back into the living room, her eyes staring into Happy's emotionless ones. It wouldn't surprise the doctor if Happy had her work schedule or, if Gemma had told him it.

"Just a coincidence." He kept his answer short as usual.

"Right. Well I'm going to bed, enjoy the beer." She said the sarcasm back in her voice.

Jolene turned away from Happy, and began walking towards her bedroom. She stopped short once she heard his footsteps behind her. "Hap, what are you doing?" She turned around, coming face to face with the bald tattooed man.

"Going to bed." He said, looking her up and down. He smirked ever so slightly once he noticed the shirt she was wearing.

"Happy." She began. "Whatever." She sighed, giving up on whatever it was she planned on saying. Jolene was too tired to have this conversation with him. Plus, maybe it would feel good to have someone sleeping next to her for the night. It had been a long time since she had someone else in her bed. Well, expect for Mateo when he had a nightmare. "Keep your hands to yourself." The brunette stayed as they walked into the bedroom, earning her a rare laugh from Happy.

"Goodnight Happy." Jolene mumbled, turning over on her side and falling asleep the instant her eyes closed.

"Night." He muttered, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her body closer to his.
