𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗬 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗜𝗗 is the two words that anyone in Atalanta would describe the summer days they had. The sun beating down on them causing cases of sun stroke sending people of all ages into hospitals and doctors office's.
When the dead decided to walk, the world around them fell and very few survived. The quarry just outside Atlanta was hot. The water provided multiple sources. Hallie had her feet dipped in it as she sat on a large boulder, the water cooled down her body and the gentle breeze stopped beads of sweat from running down her face. A tinge of red rested over her nose and cheeks, curtesy of the beating sun and her outside chores that Lori had 'assigned' her.
The group that had been sent into the city still hadn't arrived back and a state of panic made its way into the group. Normally they'd be back in a few hours, at most a day. Three days was unusual and they hadn't heard anything that morning.
She jumped when she felt a hand on her shoulder, nearly slipping off the rock and into the water, luckily catching herself. She calmed down when she realised it was just her father, the man was hunched over laughing at her.
"That is not funny! I thought you were a Walker" Hallie glared at the man before pushing herself up and sliding her feet into her shoes.
"I'm sorry" Shane chuckled before continuing "c'mon back up to camp now"
Nodding Hallie linked her arm with her fathers as they both walked towards the jeep, bumping each other back and forth— parting ways to enter the car.
—
A blaring alarm could be heard from miles away, causing the group to gather around Dales R.V.
Abby had grabbed the baseball bat that was leant against the roof, quickly sliding down the ladder.
"Talk to me, Dale" Shane yelled up to the man.
Hallie was tucked into Shane's side, his face had a look of stress written all over it.
"Well I'll be damned" the man mumbled, pulling the binoculars away from his face.
" What is that?" Amy asked.
"A stolen car would be my guess" dale said as he climbed down the ladder.
The noise grew louder as a red sports car pulled up to them, Glenn climbing out.
"Holy crap! Turn that damn thing off!" Dale yells over the noise.
"I don't know how!" Glenn screeched.
"Pop the hood, please. Pop the damn hood please" Shane yelled over the noise of the alarm.
"My sister, Andrea..." Amy started.
"Pop the damn hood!" Shane yelled more forcefully drawing the attention of Glenn.
"What? Yeah okay" he mumbled climbing back in popping the hood.
"Is she okay? Is she all right!?" Amy yelled growing frustrated with the lack of answers.
"Yes! Yeah, everyone's fine. Well Merle not that much" Glenn spoke as he took off his cap running his hand through his hair.
Once the alarm was switched off shane walked right up to Glenn and started yelling "are you crazy, driving this wailing bastard up here? Are you trying to draw every Walker for miles!?"
"I think we're okay" Abby say calmly throwing the bat on the ground.
"You call being stupid you'd okay?" Shane asked, bewildered by Abby's words.
"The alarm was all over these hills. Hard to pinpoint the source. I'm not arguing I'm just saying" dale spoke towards Shane before turning to Glenn " it wouldn't hurt you to think things through a little more next time now, would it?"
"Sorry, but I gotta cool car?" Glenn smiles sheepishly before a truck pulls in.
Shane walked over to Hallie, slinging his arm around her shoulder pulling her into his side. Andrea climbed out first, running towards Amy—embracing her in a tight hug immediately.
Morales was next, his kids and wife running up to the man greeting him. Hallie glanced over at Carl, the boy looked distraught as Lori cradled her son. The news of rick was still fresh in their minds and leads would be. She knew what it felt like to lose a parent.
"I thought we lost y'all for sure" Hallie chuckled as dale backed her up with a nod.
"How'd y'all get out of there anyway?" Shane asked, adding to Hallies statement.
"New guys... got us out" Glenn informed.
"New guys?"
"Yeah, crazy Vato's just got into town. Hey, helicopter boy! Kid! Come say hello" morales chuckled before yelling towards the truck "guys a cop like you, and had this Latino kid with him"
The man walks up towards the group and Hallie could feel her father stiffen so she reluctantly pulled her gaze away from Carl and Lori looking straight at the man. Her eyes widened as a gleeful smile took over her expression.
"Oh my god" rick mumbled as he saw Shane and Hallie, then his wife and child.
"DAD! DAD!" Carl yelled happily as he sprung towards his father meeting him in a tight hug. Lori soon followed clutching onto her husband for great life.
Hallie laughed airily as she leant her head against her father shoulder a large smile spread along her face watching the grimes family reunion, unwillingly her eyes cast to the boy.
He must have not been that much older than her, he looked awkward as his hands were shoved tightly in his pockets looking towards the ground as he kicked the dust around.
Hallie felt bad for him. He seemed totally and utterly alone.
—
"Disoriented. I guess that comes closest. Disoriented, fear, confusing... all those things... but disoriented comes closest" rick explained as Carl laid in his lap.
"Words can be meagre things. Sometimes they fall short" dale said as he sat in his chair.
"Very poet like of you Dale" Hallie said moving her eyebrows up and down jokingly before leaning more into Shane.
The boy who arrived with rick let out a quiet laugh. It was the first sound he made all day besides a a small thank you he gave to carol after she gave him some food and water.
He was sat slightly away from the group. Creating a barrier already.
"And from the looks of the hospital it got overrun. Then I found Roman—more like he found me" rick spoke nodding towards the boy, who's head lifted in acknowledgment when he heard his name. Roman.
"Yeah looks don't deceive. I barley got them out, you know?" Shane butted in.
"I can't tell you how greatful I am to you Shane. I can't begin to express it. And I'm glad you and Hallie are safe" rick spoke with a thankful smile on his face tipping his head towards Hallie.
"There go those words falling short again, paltry things"
Hallie looked over at Carol, Ed and Sophia. Nudging her dad when she noticed Ed putting another log of wood in the fire. Removing his arm from around his daughter Shane walked over to the group—giving Hallie an opportunity to go and speak to Roman.
Standing up Hallie drew the blanket that was around her shoulders tighter before walking over and sitting down beside him.
Roman looked over at Hallie when he seen her coming towards him, he gave her a shy smile which she returned before speaking "Hallie walsh, you?"
"Roman Martinez, you that guys... Shane? Is it, daughter?" Roman said as he looked at Hallie softly.
"Yeah, just me and him. How about you?" Hallie asked, the look that came upon Romans face made Hallie internally cringe. She had hit a nerve.
"Me and my family got split up then I found rick... he was in a hospital gown on a bike, then proceeded to fall off of a bike" Roman chuckled painfully, the second hand embarrassment clear on his face.
A laugh erupted out of Hallies mouth at the thought of rick falling off a bike, her laugh sounded like a melody in Romans' ears. It was smooth and joyful, colour in a world that was black and white. It sounds cliché, shit that happens in movies—but I guess who expects an apocalypse to happen.
The group started to disappear one by one as the two teens spoke, when the pair noticed Hallie sighed before standing up.
"You can take my dads bed, he's on watch tonight" she smiled softly at him before nodding her head indicating for him to follow her towards the tent.
—
The sound of Carl and Sophia laughing woke Roman up that morning. He looked over to see Hallie sound asleep, her blonde ringlets displayed messily over her pillow and smudged mascara prominent under her eyes.
Slowly he made his way out of the tent, as quietly as possible. Walking up to the main area of the camp he spotted rick sat on a log, eating what looked to be canned beans.
Roman sat beside him quietly, the man smiling slightly before passing him a plate. "How'd you sleep?" Rick asked the boy kindly.
"The best I have in a while, you?" Roman said as she shovelled the food into his mouth.
"It was nice to be with my wife again" rick chuckled before he looked at the boy "I'm going back to Atlanta to get Merle; the man we left on the roof, and I want you to stay here"
Knowing that no matter what he did Rick would never intentionally put him in danger Roman nodded before going back to his food. He was grateful.
-
When Hallie woke up she immediately noticed the lack of people in the tent. The wrist watch that she had beside her bed read one-nineteen. It was late, she was going down to the quarry anyways like she usually did.
Normally she'd get Shane to drive her down or get a ride with who ever was going down that day but when she was finally ready her father was no where in sight.
Sighing she started the trek down to the quarry.
It had taken her about thirty minutes to walk down there. When she arrived she seen Carol, Andrea and Amy washing clothes on a board, Shane was in the water—Carl sitting across from him on a boulder.
Hallie made eye contact with her father, she put her finger up to her lip indicating for him to be quiet. Silently she snuck up behind the boy before grabbing his shoulders pretending like she was going to push him in.
A scream erupted the boys mouth before he quickly covered his mouth, he wasn't scared.
Laughs erupted out of Shane and Hallie, the boys face grew red as he angrily stood up on the rocks, taking advantage in Hallie being bent over slightly winded from laughing and pushed her into the water.
The girl gasped for breath when she resurfaced from the water. Shane laughing even harder than before this time Carl joining him.
"You think that's funny, huh lil' man" Hallie egged on before using her arms to splash the boy.
The laughing died down when Shane and Hallie noticed Lori walking over to the trio. "Hey Carl, what did I tell you 'bout leaving Dales sight" the woman called over, her hand shading her eyes.
"But Shane said we could catch frogs, remember?" Carl reminded him mom as his eyebrows furrowed.
"It doesn't matter what Shane says. It matters what I say. Go on back to camp, I'll be right behind you" Lori spoke sternly. Carl huffed before he stood up walking away from them.
"You too Hallie, I needa' speak to your daddy" Lori spoke with her arms crossed against her chest.
Silently nodding Hallie pulled herself out of the water grabbing a towel that had been folded on the rock before jogging to catch up with Carl.

Okay so we got like zero abby this chapter because she is a very reserved character and she definitely doesn't trust the group at this moment but I promise we will see her next chapter!!
Anyways hi Roman....
Shane and Hallie do have a good relationship, yes. Growing up without her mother brought them extremely close—Shane having to play both mom and dad in her life.
It doesn't completely change his story line but he cares immensely for his daughter and would die for her.
Anyways enjoy xx
