Epilogue
Moonwhisper's claws snapped shut, her anger and hurt still simmering from her confrontation with Nyx.
She knew her words had been brutal, but she couldn't help the pain that lingered from her sister's decision to leave their family for the world of the living. The thought of Nyx finding happiness with humans, of all creatures, was a bitter pill to swallow.
Just then, Skyfall padded up to the agitated dragon, her tail wagging softly as she nuzzled Moonwhisper's side. "She'll come to her senses soon, sister," Skyfall clicked her tongue, trying to offer comfort, and reached out to lick Moonwhisper's cheek.
But the white dragon remained still, her gaze fixed on some distant point, refusing to acknowledge her wolf sister's attempt to soothe her. The pain and anger had created a chasm between them, one that Moonwhisper couldn't bridge, not yet.
"Frost will forgive Nyx eventually, and you will too," Skyfall said, her voice gentle but firm, as she stood up and padded away from Moonwhisper, who remained frozen, her gaze fixed on her own clenched claws, her mind still reeling from the pain and anger that lingered. Skyfall's words hung in the air, a soft reminder that even the deepest wounds could heal with time, but for now, Moonwhisper couldn't shake off the feeling of betrayal and hurt that had settled in her heart.
With a deep sigh, Moonwhisper lifted her gaze to the cloudless sky, feeling the warmth of the sun on her face. She spread her magnificent white wings, their slow unfolding a testament to her majestic power.
Then, with a burst of strength, she launched herself upwards, soaring towards the endless blue expanse. As she flew, she twisted and turned, her body a fluid, aerodynamic shape, her wings beating in a slow, rhythmic motion.
The wind rushed past her, a gentle caress that soothed her troubled mind. In this moment, she was free, unencumbered by the weights of the world. This was what it meant to be a dragon - to ride the wind, to feel the sun on her back, and to know that she was a creature of legend, untethered and unstoppable. Not to be bound by the petty concerns of a sister who would never understand the deep, unspoken bonds of sisterhood.
Moonwhisper banked hard to the side, avoiding a collision with a duck that came careening past, its frantic quacks echoing through the air as if it was being pursued by some unseen terror. She let out a dismissive snort, and then, with a swift motion, curled her tail up and around, the sharp, barbed spines that lined its length glinting in the sunlight as she jabbed them straight at the duck, striking it with a swift, precise motion.
With a swift motion, Moonwhisper plucked the duck from her tail and swallowed it whole, savoring the brief, satisfying taste of fresh meat.
Then, she banked hard to the side, swooping down towards the forest with her claws extended, their sharp tips glinting in the sunlight as she skimmed over the treetops. Ahead of her, the massive mountain peak loomed, its rugged slopes and snow-capped summit a familiar sight.
She dove down towards the ground, her wings tucked in tight, and landed with a soft thud on the earth, her claws digging deep into the soil. A snort of fire and smoke escaped her lips as she slung herself into the cave, her eyes adjusting to the dim light within.
It was a rare occasion for Moonfall to leave the comfort of her cave, but despite her advanced age, she was still a formidable hunter, capable of catching her own prey when the mood struck her. Mostly, she was content to feast on the fish that swam in her private pond, but every now and then, she felt the urge to stretch her wings and take to the skies, to feel the rush of the hunt and the thrill of the catch.
The voice that spoke was like thunder, shaking the air and making Moonwhisper's heart tremble. "You come to me again with needs, Moonwhisper. What is it that you seek now?" The young dragon had to bite her cheek to stifle a scream as the gigantic ocean dragon, Moonfall, rose up from the depths of the cave. Water cascaded from its massive body, creating a misty veil that surrounded it like a halo. Its mane, a wild tangle of seaweed-like strands, flapped in the air as it moved, its eyes gleaming with ancient wisdom.
Moonwhisper swallowed hard, trying to find her voice. "I... I just need to know what to do. My sister Nyx, she... she went back to the world of the living." Moonfall's response was a low, rumbling snort, accompanied by a plume of smoke that curled from its nostrils. Its gaze, piercing and unyielding, fixed on Moonwhisper. "I know. I sent her there." The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning, and Moonwhisper felt a shiver run down her spine as she realized the truth.
Moonwhisper's voice faltered, her words tumbling out in a rush. "I-I know, but I need to know what to do. It hurts, Moonfall. It hurts that she chose them over us." Her eyes, usually bright and fierce, now shone with a deep sadness, and her voice cracked with emotion. "Why did she do it? Why did she choose the humans over her own family?" The pain and confusion in her voice were palpable, and Moonfall's expression softened ever so slightly as it regarded the young dragon.
Moonfall's voice was a low, soothing murmur, her words a gentle balm to Moonwhisper's troubled soul. "I understand, little one. I truly do. But sometimes, the only thing we can do is let time heal our wounds. You will come to terms with Nyx's decision, eventually. That's all I can say." She began to slide back into the water, her massive body undulating as she moved. But then, she paused, and turned back to Moonwhisper with a sigh. "However, if you're determined to take action, there is one thing you can do." Her eyes, ancient and wise, locked onto Moonwhisper's. "Take her back." The words hung in the air, a challenge and a temptation, before Moonfall vanished into the shimmering depths of the water, leaving Moonwhisper to ponder the weight of her suggestion.
