CHAPTER ONE
When he is well known photographer, who is absolutely obsessed with butterflies but you have fear of Lepidopterophobia
------ ✯ ✯✯ ------
Butterflies – vibrant, alluring, and elegant creatures – flutter gracefully, adorning nature with their delicate beauty. They flit from flower to flower, siphoning sweet nectar while unknowingly spreading pollen with each flutter of their dainty wings, an enchanting dance that seems almost otherworldly.
As symbols of the soul, eternal life, purity, and immortality, butterflies carry a significance so profound it’s difficult to associate anything negative with them. In every fairytale illustration or cinematic masterpiece, it's almost a given to see a butterfly delicately perched on a princess's finger or weaving through her hair, its fragile wings shimmering like whispers of light.
And perhaps it’s no surprise that Kim Taehyung is utterly captivated by them.
Since childhood, his fascination with butterflies has been unwavering. He could still remember the thrill of opening a birthday present from his mother—a book about butterflies, their colours vividly printed across its pages. His young eyes sparkled with delight, and an uncontrollable squeal escaped his lips. That day marked the beginning of his enduring admiration for these ephemeral beings.
As Taehyung grew older, so did his passion. Photography became the medium through which he captured their ethereal elegance, freezing fleeting moments in time. Now, as an acclaimed photographer with his own art exhibit in Seoul dedicated to butterflies, his work draws admirers from across the globe. Every spring, he holds an annual event to showcase his latest creations, a celebration of nature’s artistry that leaves visitors in awe.
Today, his studio was meticulously prepared. A lush green wall brimming with blooming flowers and vibrant foliage had been arranged by attentive staff. The room was dark, save for a single lamp illuminating a glass case containing live butterflies, their iridescent wings glinting softly in the light.
Taehyung worked with quiet precision, gently placing the butterflies onto the floral wall, adjusting their positions until satisfied. Moving swiftly to his camera, he switched off the lamp and peered through the lens, adjusting the angle with an expert’s eye before capturing the moment.
Later, he found himself slumped in the worn leather chair of his office, frustration etched into his features. Running a hand through his tousled brown curls, he examined the photos on his computer, his sharp gaze picking apart every detail. A groan of exasperation escaped him as he slammed the laptop shut, ripping off his glasses and burying his face in his arms.
“I take it you weren’t happy with today’s shoot?” a familiar voice asked. Min Yoongi strolled into the room, placing a cup of iced coffee on Taehyung’s desk.
Taehyung let out another groan, lifting his head just enough to reach for the drink. “I don’t know what’s wrong, hyung. Every concept I come up with either feels overdone, or the results just don’t match my vision.” He took a sip, his frustration palpable.
“You’re being too critical of yourself,” Yoongi replied, his tone calm and measured. “Personally, I think the work we’ve done this week is fantastic.”
“That’s the problem!” Taehyung whined, exasperated. “I don’t want it to just be great, I want it to be breathtaking. This is the fifth year we’re holding this event, and some really influential critics are coming. I want them to walk into the exhibit and be absolutely speechless.”
Yoongi chuckled, shaking his head knowingly. “I figured you’d say that.” He pulled out his phone, scrolling before holding it out to Taehyung. “That’s why I did a little research and found a place I think you’ll love.”
Taehyung’s eyes widened as he examined the post on Instagram. The photos depicted a dreamlike landscape bursting with vibrant flowers. “Wow… this is incredible, hyung. Where is this?”
“It’s called Flower Valley, and it’s in Busan,” Yoongi explained. “People in the comments say it’s even more beautiful in person, especially at this time of year.”
“I need to go. Right now.” Taehyung sprang to his feet, grabbing his bag and camera in a flurry of excitement.
“Hold on!” Yoongi called, rushing after him and slipping into the elevator just as the doors began to close. “Calm down, Tae. I already booked us train tickets for tomorrow at six in the morning.”
Taehyung frowned. “Why not take a plane? It’s only about three hours, and the train takes almost six hours.”
“I thought about that,” Yoongi replied with a smirk, “but there are scenic views along the way you can’t see from a plane. I figured they might spark some inspiration before we even get there.”
Taehyung sighed, his excitement tempered by a touch of apprehension. “I just hope Busan holds the inspiration I’ve been searching for.”
“It will,” Yoongi said confidently, placing a reassuring hand on Taehyung’s shoulder. “And even if it doesn’t, I’m here to help you find it.”
