High Fae of the Night Court
~ Quin Talon Seaver ~
The Defensive
'How many times do we say we don't care but deep down we care so fucking much...'
ROLE
High Fae from the Night Court
NAME
Quin Talon Seaver
Quin
This name means 'counsellor or wise man', but to say Quin is either of those things would be extremely wrong. Quin is neither wise, nor the person you'd go to for council. Regardless, this name was chosen by his mother despite his father's wish for a more 'manly' name.
Talon
You might've guessed, but this means 'the claws on the foot of a bird of prey'. This was the name Quin's father wanted to call him, but Quin's mother downright refused so this was the compromise. Needless to say, Quin is eternally grateful for his mother's intervention there.
Seaver
This last name means 'sea', and Quin has no idea where it originated from. All he knows is that its his surname, and the name of his father and his mother. He's not particularly fond of it. One day he hopes to have the courage to change it and forget about his family for good.
NICKNAMES
Quin doesn't really do nicknames, but despite his protests, he's picked up one or two over the years
Quinny
Considering that this nickname is longer than his actual name, Quin hardly sees the appeal. Is it fun for other people to say more syllables? Or do they just enjoy irritating him? He doesn't know, but he knows he doesn't like it. It's a great way to wind him up.
Grouch
This is because of Quin's less-than-sunny disposition. He can be irritable and bitchy, and has somehow earned this nickname for himself. Hardly unfitting. He is most certainly a bit of a pessimistic grump at times.
AGE
873
His birthday falls upon the 18th of September

POWERS*
Being from the night court means that Quin's powers are linked to darkness and everything that comes with it. He only has one power, and that's the ability to manipulate shadows when he wills it. It's not a particularly useful power in his opinion- he'd much rather be able to turn himself invisible and avoid all forms of human interaction. Or maybe he'd prefer to fly, soar through the air with wings larger than life itself. Even mind control would be more useful. But no. He can make things a little dark when he wants, cause shadows to flicker. He knows people with his power can do a lot more than he can, but he never bothered to learn so can't really control it very well.
SEXUALITY
Bisexual

PERSONALITY
People meeting Quin for the first time always think the same thing, and it's definitely not positive. You see, Quin is quite literally the definition of an asshole. He hates people with a passion rarely seen, and it's is obvious. He does his best to avoid interactions with others when he can help it, preferring to spend his time reading or playing music or watching the stars. In fact, most things are preferable to being forced into social interaction. He can be a sarcastic little bugger when he's not in the mood, and is generally just a bit of an irritable git. Upon first meetings, the general tone of Quin's demeanour is disdain and snappiness, though, if you don't seem to be too irritating, you may get some begrudging dark humour, and maybe even a slightly less hostile greeting. It all depends on the person.
The root of Quin's utter contempt for spending time with people is his fear. Everyone has fears, and everyone reacts to them in different ways. Quin's fears just happen to be manipulation and betrayal, and he happens to deal with them by running away. It's a technique that has actually worked for him for way too many years. To put it simply, Quin feels vulnerable. He is a walking open wound, and in order to stop people taking advantage of his fragile state, he does the only thing he can think of: he puts up defences. It's probably not the healthiest way to deal with his unrelenting anxiety, but he doesn't exactly have another way to keep himself safe.
Another less known fact about Quin Seaver is his dreamy side. You see, among the hostility and fear lurks a passion for beautiful things, things like the sky when the stars come out and poetry when the words seem to run around his head like a song on repeat. He delights in sitting and listening to music reverberating off walls and feels strangely complete when the books he reads reach a satisfying conclusion. His trust issues™️ usually prevent his from sharing his secret passions, but occasionally he may open up if you're not too irritating and confrontational. If this is the case, you may even get to peak Quin's playful side, full of sarcastic humour and broody flirting. The truth is, Quin is still human (well, fae, but human). He needs people just as much as anyone else. He needs their support and interaction to keep himself sane, even if he refuses to acknowledge it.
BACKGROUND*
Part I
~The Early Days~
Quin Talon Seaver was the only son of Eulon and Katheria Seaver, two high fae of the night court. Quin's feelings about his father were always mixed. He had this irritating desire to make him proud, but also the very strong sense that he was trying to be someone else. His father always encouraged the traits he wanted, like being charming and authoritative, boisterous and boyish. He wanted a son he could parade around and show off, but instead he got the weak little Quin who was much more interested in music and poetry and keeping to himself. Needless to say, their relationship was strained at the best of times. To be fair, Quin didn't have a great relationship with his mother either. She was a strong women who agreed with Eulon that their son should be strong and powerful, a worthy successor to their family line. Needless to say, Quin household wasn't exactly a welcoming place. It was built on hostility and disappointment, and Quin gradually closed himself off, not wanting to continue showing his inadequacies to the world.
Part II
~The Incident~
One day, when Quin was still rather young (equivalent to the human age of 15) things in his family took a turn for the worst. In the middle of the night, something hit the house that Quin and his parents lived in, causing half of it to collapse and half of it to catch fire. Fae are superior to humans, yes, but shadow manipulation is powerless against flames or a falling roof. Quin was lucky. His bedroom roof collapsed but he wasn't hurt at all, just pinned to his bed. His parents weren't quite so fortunate. His mother was killed instantly by a falling piece of debris and his father somehow managed to stumble out of the house, only a few burns littering his fast healing skin. To this day, Quin still doesn't know what exactly happened that night. He doesn't know who set off the explosion or why, and he doesn't think he'll ever find out. All he knows is that was both the best and worst thing that ever happened to him. It set him free but it also killed his family in every way that mattered.
Part III
~The Aftermath~
After the events of that night, Quin and his father moved to a different house and barely spoke for years. Eulon sunk so far into himself that he barely acknowledged his son anymore. His wife's death took away every part of him that mattered. It was like he shrivelled up, became a husk of a person. Quin hated himself for feeling relieved. As soon as he was old enough, Quin left his father with a couple of servants and carers and ran off to the city. It was here he truly started to thrive. Yes, he was still an arsey anxious bean, but he finally had room to breathe, and that was all he needed.

OTHER
—> Isn't actually that mean to the slaves, partly because he doesn't view them as much of a threat (unlike all other fae) and partly because he considers them beneath him. He is not cruel, why would he intentionally cause pain to them? It's like hitting a puppy. That being said, he's still not going to be nice to them. Too much effort.
—> He got a job as a tailor, and now makes clothes for a living. Not just any clothes, but gorgeous garments that have caught the attention of many higher class fae.
