Chapter 30) We Need To Talk
After that quick, sudden realization, I quickly drove back to Katherine's house. She wasn't taking my calls or responding to any of my text messages.
When I made it to her house, I pulled over the car and started calling her phone nonstop.
"Katherine. Please, pick up the phone." I said underneath my breath.
Declined.
"Babe..."
I pulled out from the gym's parking lot and began making the trip over to Katherine's house. Worst case scenario, she probably wrote me a note and dumped me like the last one did.
Thirty-Minutes Later
I arrived to her house and parked my car in her driveway. When I walked inside, I noticed that she had locked the door and I struggled to open it.
Thankfully, I had a spare key that she gave me a few weeks ago when our relationship started and unlocked the door. Before I knew it, I looked down and Katherine was lying on the floor.
"Babe?" I said, kneeling down.
She was unresponsive.
"Shit. I need to get you to the hospital baby."
Panicking, I called for help.
"Nine-one-one, what's your emergency?"
"My girlfriend." I said in between words, "She's lying on the floor and she's unconscious. Please, hurry."
I gave them the address and was beginning to panic. I've never seen Katherine in this state before. This wasn't like her at all. After the ambulance arrived shortly after, they went to check her out.
"I'm gonna need you to take a step back, sir." One of the paramedics said.
"Is she gonna be okay?"
"I don't know. We're gonna get her to the hospital as soon as possible and you can sit in the back with her."
"That's fine."
I went with my girlfriend into the ambulance and was worried about her health. Did she have any health issues that she's never told me about? I don't know. All that mattered to me was making sure that she was okay.
The Hospital
We checked her into a room and she was hooked to some IV sedatives and was asleep in the bed. I paced around the hallway of the hospital in freight. I didn't bother calling Joe or Jon about the situation. I felt like this was my fault but then again, I had a feeling that this could've been one of my ex-girlfriends causing trouble between us.
"Colby Lopez?" A doctor said, peeping his head out from the room door.
"Yeah? Is she okay?"
"Thankfully, yes. I'm afraid to be the barer of bad news; but from the looks of it, it seems that she had overdosed on some medicine that she's been taking for her anxiety."
"Overdosed?" I said, feeling my heart drop.
"Yes." He nodded, "If it wasn't for you calling for help in time, she would've died."
I fell to my knees and was taking in the doctors words. She overdosed because of me? I felt disgusted with myself and collected my thoughts before heading back into the room to check on Katherine.
I went back into the room to seeing my girlfriend laying down. I believe I knew the reason as to why she overdosed. She must have thought I cheated on her like Tony.
"Fuck. This is all my fault!"
I fell to my knees once again and started to feeling the tears welling up in my eyes.
"Katherine, look. I love you and I promise you that I didn't knock up another woman. I couldn't do that to you and I'm so sorry. I feel like you overdosed because of me and this is all my fault."
I walked out of the room with tears still falling from my eyes. I never loved someone as much as I loved Katherine. And I wouldn't have forgiven myself if she died because of me. I pulled my phone out from my pocket and called up Jon and Joe. They were both hanging out together and working out at the gym at the time and I needed the two closest friends in my life to help me through this.
"Jon, Joe, we need to talk. I need my brothers." I said, sobbing.
"What's up, man?" Joe said.
"Yeah, what's going on, Colby? Why are you crying?" Jon asked.
"Katherine's in the hospital."
"For what? What happened?" Jon and Joe said in sync.
"She overdosed while I was gone, and if I didn't get her to the hospital in time," I paused, "She would've died."
"What the fuck? That's not like her, Colbs." Jon paused, "Call Brianna."
"Man, she's going to think this is my fault and kill me on the spot."
"Just do it, man. She's not going to kill you or anything; that's her best friend." Joe said.
"Alright, alright. Give me a minute."
I hung up and called Brianna.
"Bri, we need to talk."
"What's wrong, Colby? You sound uneasy."
"That's because I am. But please make it down here to the hospital in LA. It's Katherine."
"Katie? Oh my gosh, is she okay?"
I paused, "Somewhat. I'll explain what happened when you get here."
"I'm clocking out of work right now. I don't care if I get fired. I'll see you in twenty minutes!"
After hanging up the phone, I waited for Brianna to make her way into the hospital and when she did, she slammed the door open and seen Katherine laying in the hospital bed with a breathing mask on her face and her arms were hooked to IVs.
"Colby? What the hell happened to her?"
"She overdosed and thankfully I got her to the hospital on time or else she would've died. I think I know why she did it, though." I dropped my head in defeat.
"She did what?" She said with her eyes shot open, "Spill it. I want to know everything that happened and now."
"Listen, what I'm about to tell you is the truth, I swear." I paused, "First off, Katherine was at the café and she was enjoying herself from what she told me. Suddenly, it seemed that one of my ex-girlfriends must've approached her and said she was pregnant and carrying my child just to hurt her."
"Colby, you didn't..."
"Listen. Let me explain the situation. There was a night where I was hanging out with Jon at the bar and we were spending time together. Suddenly, the alcohol took over the both of our heads and I started feeling drunk. I remember telling a woman that I wasn't interested in her and that I loved Katherine; and after that, I immediately blacked out. I woke up a few hours later and realized I was completely naked and the woman said that we had sex in some beaten-up hotel. She basically forced me that night even though I was drunk and didn't consent."
"I'm at a loss for words."
"That's not all." I looked down in defeat, "Katherine thinks I knocked up another woman and I swear I didn't impregnate another woman, Bri. I couldn't do that to Katherine."
"I know you wouldn't."
"I just hope that the kid isn't mine."
"I'm sure it's not, Colby. Look, we'll explain to Katie when she's awake, okay?"
"Yeah. That's if she believes me."
The Next Day
Brianna and I stayed the night at the hospital in hopes that she would wake up soon. It was ten in the morning and we realized that she was starting to open her eyes. She was confused to see herself at the hospital and scanned across the room.
"Baby. I'm so glad that you're okay and awake."
Just like that, she heard my voice and scoffed at me, "Go away, Colby."
"Babe, I can explain."
"Katie, listen to him." Brianna interrupted.
"Whatever. What is it?"
I sat next to Katherine's beside and placed my hand over hers.
"Katherine, listen to me. We need to talk."
"About what?" She snagged her hand back, "Don't hold my hand, scumbag."
"I deserve that. But listen, that woman who visited you over at the café must have been of my ex-girlfriends. If you don't mind me asking, what was her name?"
"If I remember, her name was Zahra."
"I knew it. That bitch." I said underneath my breath. "That's the woman that left me for another man a few years ago. Katherine, I can explain this whole situation if you just hear me out."
"Go ahead, I'm listening."
"Remember when we were in the talking phase before we became official, right?"
"Yeah?"
"I was hanging out with Jon at the bar after one of our shows and we decided on grabbing some beers. Jon and I started feeling lightheaded and drunk after the first few cans and I remembered a woman with straightened, black hair approached us and began flirting with me; wanting to have a good time. I refused. She continued and unfortunately the alcohol took over my brain and I was unaware of my surroundings. And I hate to say this, but I feel like she forced herself onto me that night and I was blacked out from the alcohol at the time."
"But I thought Jon couldn't get drunk?"
"Trust me, it surprised me too. He must've had too much to drink because..."
"I don't believe you about that." She said bluntly.
"Want proof? Let me call up Jon and he'll tell you himself."
I called him and he picked up within a second.
"How is Katie, Colby?"
"She's doing good, but I need you to help me here."
"With what?"
"She thinks you didn't get drunk at the bar back then. I tried explaining it, but she doesn't believe me."
"Put her on the phone, Colbs."
"Jon wants to talk to you."
I placed my phone towards her ear and had it on the speaker so I could hear him tell her the truth.
"Katie, Colby is telling you the truth about that night. I had too much to drink and Colby did too. He was wanting to be with you back then and drank his problems away; like so, and I can reassure you that he wouldn't ever fuck another woman. He loves you and I know you're on bad terms with him, but please believe him because he would never lie to you."
"I'll believe it. Thanks, Jon."
She hung up the phone and looked over at me.
"So you didn't cheat on me?"
"No, baby. I could never do that to you. I love you."
She sighs, "I love you too."
"Whenever you're clear to leave the hospital, we have a lot of talking to do."
"That's fine with me, I guess."
