06. new york has rats

— What is happening? — Maeve comes up from behind watching Gideon and Hotch talking.

Gideon points away as the team sings Happy Birthday to Spencer.

— I didn't know it was Reid's birthday.

— You're new here, Hunter.— Gideon says. —Don't feel bad.

JJ arrives with the three co-workers, offering a piece of cake to each, Maeve just shakes her head with a bitter smile.

— Twenty-four years, right?—Hotchner asks to the blonde and she nods.

— Our Spence has grown up.

Maeve gives them privacy as she has felt that being observant is her thing in this situation and she heads to her cubicle. Elle approaches the girl and puts a party hat on her head, she had no choice but to laugh with the woman.

—I've never seen anyone so depressed. —Elle says eating a piece of cake and sitting on the table.— Who died?

She is glad to know that even though Elle is now one of the people who knows her origin, Elle has never changed her treatment of her. Maeve just smiles and tries to change the topic.

— Do you have any plans for Halloween?

— I've heard the word Halloween. — Morgan is encouraged to join them.

— We are not allowed to come in costumes, are we?

— Aren't you a little old for costumes, Hunter?—Question Elle with a smile.

— Its Halloween. College students give you free candy if you knock on their door. It's the best date of the year. Especially nerds

— I like the way that girl thinks. — Morgan supports the idea.

Spencer approaches the trio with a sheepish smile and a hat bigger than his head.

— What are the plans for today, Dr. Reid? —Morgan asks hugging him from behind.

—I don't know, it wasn't something I had planned.

Elle proposes the idea of celebrating his birthday with a costume party, the group chatting animatedly while Maeve texts Garcia across the room.

— Costume party at night then. — Morgan said.

— García says we need to meet now. — She says with her gaze still glued to the screen.

They all nod and begin to clear the place, with Spencer taking slow steps waiting for Maeve to join him which she does.

It is she who decides to speak first.

— Well. There are exactly three months of the year in which you could say that you are two years older than me. Any advice, Doctor Reid? What is life like for someone three months older?

—I think I need time to think about it. Can you give me three months to think it through?— they playfully toyed with his words.

Both took their seats in their respective places, García and Hotch were the only ones standing.

— We have a case. —García said. —They have vandalized offices, abandoned offices rather. Two of facts.

— I don't see how that relates to us. — Elle Said.

— Pepper Miller was John Rodrigo's therapist. Miller is in recovery after a mysterious late-night attack leaving work. Weeks later John goes to a new therapist, Alexandra Brown, her body found dead in the parking lot the next morning by the receptionist.— JJ puts the pictures on the board and lets Garcia continue talking.—Same subject, Same attack, different results. Rodrigo was arrested in the past for violence against his partner. It is said that he saw Dr. Miller for a schizoid disorder. He went from patient to suspect when the graffiti on the walls read 'babangon sa akin ang katotohanan' he was released shortly after for lack of evidence.

— It's filipino. — Says Spencer.— From me the truth will emerge.

— We have to go. — Gideon says standing up, that information being enough for him..

— One more thing. —It is García this time who interrupts the team. This one gives Maeve a little push.— It's in New York.

Hotch raises a brow.

— You'll need someone who knows the city.—

Everyone turns to see Maeve.

— Hunter is a technical analyst, Garcia. Why would we need it in the field?

— For the same reason we took Reid and didn't lock him up here. —Morgan joked, joining the conversation.

— This will help her complete the hours of training that corresponds to her. — García supports the idea.

Hotch sighs and agrees to take her.

—Hunter. —He throws her a name tag.— This is your first real case.

The girl can't help but open her mouth in surprise and smile.

— Morgan.  Look at this ! —She whispers excitedly to the man next to her, still maintaining a smile.— Take a picture of me with my FBI badge.

— No pictures. — Hotch scolds her and she just lowers the phone from Morgan's hand.

The team was getting ready to go to the city that saw Maeve grow up, packing for a trip that was expected to be resolved within a week. They boarded the Jet as soon as possible, this matter was new to Maeve, somehow she felt like it was some kind of school trip.

— So you don't celebrate Reid's birthday?—Inquires Maeve breaking the silence on the plane.

— What are you taking about? We did this morning. — Says Elle.

— I mean a party, Or at least a day off for the poor guy.

— I don't think Reid cares, look at him, he looks happy.

Spencer was playing poker with Hotch and Morgan at the other end of the plane.

— No days off Maeve, not when duty calls. — Gideon answered this time.—We don't even know how many days this could take.

—Will we miss Halloween?— She says almost squealing.

—It's a posibility. Why all the interest in halloween, Maeve?

— It's the night where everyone parties, they have amazing food, and that's when I get to dress up as Anne Hathaway in that DC movie.

— Do you have a catwoman costume?— Elle smiles looking at her.

— No. I only wear tight clothes and I wear two little kitty ears.

— That's the laziest costume I've ever heard.

— What were you going to dress up as tonight if we hadn't canceled Spencer's party?

— I don't know, but surely something better than that. So, excited to go back to New York?

— Of course. I miss the place.

— Do you have a lot of friends there?

— Not exactly, I'm more of the lonely type.

The trip was not as long as thought, but most of them took advantage of the hours to sleep because they did not know how much of their time this case would demand. Gideon indicated where they would all be staying, a small motel far from the center of town, with small rooms and thin walls, but these provided the necessities like a bed and bathroom, by the time they had landed most of the afternoon they were gone. had gone, which made sense to them to start first thing tomorrow morning.

Maeve would share a room with Elle, Spencer with Derek, and Jason with Aaron.

Gideon says goodbye to everyone, mentioning that he wanted to take a short walk alone to the city before going to bed, Hotch goes straight to his room hoping to rest from the hectic trip, assuring that if anything happens they should contact him.

Maeve takes charge of leaving her suitcase on the bed but quickly returns to Morgan's room watching him unpack and watching him with a smile.

He just shook his head while laughing.

— Why do I feel that you plan something?

— We're in New York!

— What? They said we were in Florida! Did you hear that, Reid?

Spencer, who was at the opposite end of the room doing the same thing, curiously approaches the new but now a couple of friends.

— This is no time to be sarcastic. — The girl complains.— We can go out for a bit!

Elle walks into the boys' room and sits next to Spencer.

— Shall we go now, Morgan?

Maeve frowned and looked at them both in confusion.

— Where are you going guys?

— I'll take Derek to a small bar nearby.

— Hopefully I'll get a friend tonight.

— Well, I'm going too.

— No, no. You're not going, Pretty girl.

— What? Why not?

— Taking you would mean having an eye on you all the time. —He said. — I promise to wake up early tomorrow and get your favorite coffee. —He ruffles her hair a bit and grabs his jacket.— Same for you, Pretty boy. — He kisses Reid's forehead in a mocking manner.— Do not open the door to anyone, Kids.

— Maeve and make sure you unpack before I get there, huh. —Elle says standing up.

— Yes mommy.

But Maeve has never been so obedient. It was a matter of time before the girl took her own course. Walking the streets of New York was something she missed, so she made sure to visit a few places. Most of the stores were already ready for Halloween, and people celebrating days before, seeing a couple of children dressed up in the streets made her smile. Maeve returned as fast as the sun went down, not wanting to start building this working relationship with Hotch on the wrong foot.

Remembering Morgan telling her that the best thing was to be rested, it was ironic considering that when she arrived he wasn't even there, it was fucking early but she hoped to see him there and not feed her desire to go out.

Maeve was eating some cotton candy, or what was left of it, when she saw Spencer sitting near the pool putting together a rubik's cube.

— You been there all day? — She asks taking a seat in the chair in front of the boy.

— I didn't even notice that it had gotten dark. — He confesses looking up at the sky, making Maeve laugh a little.

— Why didn't you tell me it was your birthday?

— Had not thought of that. I have never had to remind anyone of this date.

— Well, now you have to. I'm the new girl and I don't want to miss this kind of thing for you if it's important.  I actually got something for you.

Spencer raises both eyebrows in surprise. Maeve gets to her feet and dashes away from him, before Spencer can wonder where she's going, the girl returns with a piece of cake. He just looks at her and she understands that he wants an explanation of where she got it from.

— There's a wedding in the lobby I don't think they will miss a piece.

— Maeve  that's not-

— Shh! — She turns on her cell phone's flashlight.— Blow out the candles, Doctor Reid.

The girl places the flashlight near the lips of others and he denies it, she insists so there is no other option than to pretend that she has blown out the candles, they both share that stolen piece of cake between laughs.

Both young agents take a seat, dipping their feet in the pool, after a while. They were silent until they saw how their friends were approaching.

Elle and Morgan arrived earlier than expected, the latter sneaking in and pushing Reid in the water.

— Morgan!

— What are you guys doing out here? — Elle asks.— Maeve, have you unpacked?

Shit.

She glances at Reid and they both widen their eyes knowing the answer to that. Morgan helps the youngest to get out of the water, while they were having a friendly discussion.

— Maeve?

— Whatever... Did you have fun? — Maeve tried to get her to change the subject with a big smile.

— Nice try, I'll wait for you upstairs and get all your things out.

— You know you're not her mom, right? —Morgan chimed in with a laugh.

Elle just gestured towards him and headed into the room, Morgan didn't take long to follow in her footsteps.

Maeve draped a dry towel over Spencer's shoulders, and Spencer thanked it. Spencer's long hair was plastered over his forehead, so Maeve flicked a strand behind him as she laughed, combing his entire head of hair back with Spencer's help.

— Morgan is a pain in the ass.— Didn't mean it, but he was slightly annoyed that he would have to change now.

— It makes work fun.—Maeve responds, arranging the last hair.

She withdrew her hands from the other's body as soon as she finished combing his hair. Spencer was heard to swallow thickly, when Maeve noticed that he hadn't taken his gaze from her eyes. She pursed her lips into a soft smile.

— I should get back up there before Elle kills me.

Spencer hesitated, his gaze traveling from Maeve's eyes to the edge of the pool where they were both sitting, for he was having a good time and didn't see why the moment should end.

Maeve sensed that he would ask her to stay, so she spoke quickly.

— Happy birthday, Spence. — She said after having kissed his cheek. Despite walking away in slow steps she seemed to be running away from the moment.

The next morning they all went to Dr. Brown's office, hoping to find something that could bring them closer to what similarity both doctors had and why only one of them has been murdered.

The group went to the crime scene, a vandalized office. Part of the team analyzed the scene and took samples.

Maeve, who was wearing mom-jeans with a white shirt, under a large purple trench coat, looked at everything with a smile.

— I told you not to wear that, you draw a lot of attention.—Says Elle.

— I feel like in an episode of scooby-doo. — She responded by keeping the smile on her face, as she put on her sunglasses.

— Maeve has that glow that we all have on our first day. — Morgan was watching her with amusement.— Give her a week of paperwork and she'll be wearing black like all of us.

— Where do you get those clothes?  — Asks Elle with both interest and amusement.—Are you even wearing the vest?

She opens the trench coat revealing the bulletproof vest under it. Hotch, who was passing near them, took a few steps back when he saw Maeve so happy.

— Why is Hunter happy?

— It is not obvious? It is my first case.

He doesn't question her logic and continues on his way.

— Maeve a woman died here I don't think you should smile that much. — Says Elle.

— Right... I had forgotten that part.

While Elle was chatting with Maeve about her outfit, Something else caught Agent Morgan's eyes.

— Reid. Remind me of that about the murderer not being able to avoid being part of his victim's investigation.

Spencer quickly grasped what he was referring to, and the hooded guy who repeatedly walked in front of the office door, giving Morgan the opportunity to grab him by the shoulders causing him to stop, this calls the attention of the girls who are they approach the scene.

— Let go of me you idiot.

— Robbie?

The team look at Maeve.

— Princess?

— Princess? —  Elle and Morgan question in unison looking at Maeve.

—  Morgan Just- Wait. — Maeve approaches, interposing herself between the two men and making Morgan release him.

— You know him, Maeve? — Morgan asks.

— It's...Robbie Fischer, Old friend.

— Old friend that's what you call your ex? —The boy is talking, referring to Maeve this time.

—What were you doing here? —Morgan didn't mince words.

—Hunter what are you doing with this group of cops? — He didn't take his eyes off the girl, he didn't care that they were asking him things.

— Just answer the question.— Morgan says taking a step forward.

Maeve giggles, steps back, pulling Robbie with her.

— I'm sure he has a good reason, can I take care of this?

Maeve isolated him a little from the others to be able to talk, both with enough questions for each other how and why they are both in the same place. The most worried was Maeve because she knew that they would be seeing him as a suspect. Robbie admits not being there by mistake and knowing what happened to the doctor. If Maeve made him cooperate in talking it would be a good thing.

— Who's that guy?

Maeve turns to see who was pointing behind her back.

— It's Dr. Spencer Reid.

Robbie looks at Maeve and then at Spencer, furrowing his brows at both of them repeatedly.

—You have very specific taste in men, Princess.

— Reid and you? Identical, he has three PhDs and you have three restraining orders in each state, they're like two peas in pods. Besides, I'm not dating him.

— He hasn't stopped looking at us.

Maeve glances over her shoulder once more, meeting Spencer and Morgan's gaze on them.

— You have never liked being cared for. . .Do you like freaks now?

— Can you shut up? —She waved her hand to divert the subject, which was beginning to tense. — What do you know about the clinics?

— Stop there, Love. I'm not going to give you anything yet. I want immunity. I know how this works. May none of your little doctor friends lay a finger on me.

— Robbie, Come on.

While Maeve chatted with Robbie, Morgan stayed inside the premises making sure nothing bad could happen to her, and Reid was by his side for company. But Robbie isn't capable of hurting Maeve, at least not on purpose.

—How do I know if a girl is mad at me?— Reid blurts out the sudden comment by spinning Morgan in his direction.

— What happen?

—Haven't you noticed Maeve weird lately?

— The girl is strange. You need to phrase your question better, Reid.

— I know two versions of Maeve. The Maeve of few words who walked into the BAU months ago and the Maeve who spent the wee hours waiting for me to get up to go to the bathroom so she could take off my own bed. What I'm saying is, it seems like we're distant now and you seem closer.

— You mean I turned her against you or something?

— I did not say that. But I get it, you're tall, you're attractive, you've got these amazing abs. You get all the girls.

— Are you jealous?

Before Spencer can reply, Maeve joins them in interrupting their conversation.

— Robbie says he'll help us, but they must promise not to arrest him for no reasons.

— We cannot do that.

— I can literally smell his cannabis smell. That's already a reason.

Maeve hit Spencer for his comment.

— Pleaseeeee. — Maeve pouts slightly as she looks at Morgan.— Robbie is a good guy, and I promise to take responsibility if he does anything.

— Good guy? He looks lik- Sorry. — Spencer can't finish the sentence because he feels Maeve's gaze on him.

— Don't dream of it, Prett girl. I trust you, but not him.

— If you don't need me here, I guess that's it.— Mentions Robbie raising his voice from the other side of the warehouse.

Maeve rolled her eyes and ran to him, reaching out to whisper something in his ear, he pulled away, looking at her doubtfully about what she was saying.

—  Sure, Princess ? — He questions her in a low voice and she just nods.

Robbie kisses his ex-girlfriend's hair and they both return with the two BAU agents.

Morgan wouldn't take his eyes off Maeve, wanting to know what words came from her lips to make him agree, and Spencer managed to avoid asking them what was going on.

— Doctor Reid, Agent Morgan. — Robbie greets them both, he looks at Maeve to make sure he has said the correct names and she nods, he continued with the information he had:—Maeve told me what's going on. Dr. brown sold narcotics, where I'm from I assure you everyone knows her. Someone I know was around the day she was murdered. I don't think Rodrigo is responsible for the attacks, maybe some addict, or someone she owed money to. —He shrugs like it's obvious.— There will be a party or commemoration for the doctor on Halloween night, I can have two of you come in that night and go unnoticed.

Robbie exposes the agreement with Maeve and his information to Morgan and Reid, They both fell silent and listened attentively.

Morgan just nodded and said: — Hunter will keep in contact with you.

Maeve said goodbye to the boy and they exchanged numbers, Morgan asked her to report the facts and witnesses to the team. She, along with Elle and Gideon, went in search of clues to find the whereabouts of the unsub.

— I do not trust the words of that boy. —Says to Spencer when they were alone, he pulled out his phone.—García, I need you to run some information on Robbie Fischner.

Morgan got ready to tell his friend the things via a phone call, asking her not to tell Maeve anything about what was said, so Maeve was humming a song under her breath, entering Doctor Miller's office.

— Maeve. Gloves. —Elle warns before she could touch anything.

She raises both hands and goes looking for a pair

— Remind me what we're looking for.—Maeve said as she squatted down and went through an accordion with old papers.

— Reid said that the translation was From me will rise the truth. —Gideon informs, looking at the girl.— Written in Filipino. Miller was Rodrigo's first Doctor, Considering that Dr. Brown's office is still under review, it is best to see if she still has Rodrigo's original files.

— From me will rise the truth. —Repeat Elle. — Doesn't sound religious?

— We are talking about an unknown with schizoid. He wouldn't be the first with the delusions of believing that God has sent him to do these things.

The other two were having a conversation while Maeve listened vaguely, rummaging through the papers.

— Question.

— We hear you, Maeve. — Said Gideon.

— Do they usually solve all your cases?

Gideon and Elle exchange glances, and the woman responds seeing that he wouldn't.

— It rarely does not happen. Why do you ask, Maeve?

Maeve puts a VHS tape in Elle's hands.

— Where was this?

— Hidden under some files. — Gideon holds out his hand to see it but Maeve hesitates to give it.— I'm not getting this.

Gideon didn't understand what she meant until he saw the name Alexandra Brown written on the tape. Apparently both doctors had a relationship that everyone was unaware of at this time.

Elle made sure to save the tape to watch when the team met.

— Look. — Maeve says rubbing her temple. — I know I'm not a genius, but I'm not understanding why Dr. Miller knows Dr. Brown, and how Rodrigo is related to this.

— When we see the recording things will become less dark.

The brunette frowned when an idea came to her mind.

— Can I use it?— She pointed to the computer that was on the desk.

— I think so. —The yes was enough so that the girl was already sitting in front of the computer typing.— But Maeve, I'm sure it's locked- Forget it, you're already in. What are you looking for, Girl?

— Maybe I can find the recordings here. JJ said that Rodrigo had schizoid episodes. He wouldn't mind the changes because he would have to kill the doctor.

— Someone with schizoid may experience schizophrenic episodes.— Gideon answers, seeing how she looked for an answer in his eyes when she saw him. — It is not the same to be schizophrenic than to have episodes of ezquidodes, the second usually occurs when your genes are directly related to them, such as ancestry

— But Rodrigo is not schizophrenic. I think they are distracting us.

— What do you mean, Mave?

— I don't believe the deaths were related to borderline personality disorder.— Maeve typed a few things, then turned on the printer and it started ejecting some pages.

Maeve insisted that she needed to watch the video before venturing out, she didn't want to make a mistake in what she was saying, so they informed the rest of the team to meet at the hotel at the end of the day. Hotch blurts out the information that the only witness seen was Robbie, Maeve's contact, the vandalized office, and lack of prints at the scene only prove what Maeve was thinking.

— This was not a fit of rage and madness. it was premeditated.

— Whoever killed Brown didn't want them to know they were there. —  Morgan said.

— They're making us spin like dogs chasing our tails. —Maeve had the irrevocable attention of Hotch now.— They gave us the case, a suspect, the reasons for doing it. —The girl shows the records of Brown being a former patient of Miller's. — Someone wants to play smart and I don't think it's Rodrigo.

— Only a narcissist would underestimate the power of others. —Says Spencer.— The narcissistic personality comes from violence, from a terrible trauma, from an inflicted injury, in its early stages of development or before. Someone who maybe once underestimated.

— And an antisocial personality disorder wouldn't help.  — Maeve focuses her gaze on Spencer.— Bundy, is proof that you don't need a motive to kill, just opportunity.

— It would feed the need to go with one victim after another just for pleasure.— Spencer agrees with her. —Just because it would be easy.

— We're looking for a sociopath. Man. Insurance no older than forty years. —Gideon comments, connecting loose ends in his head.

— Just like Miller. — They all look at Morgan when they hear his words.

— Miller is a victim, he was hurt, wasn't he?

— He really is?  No one has seen him since.

Hotch and Gideon exchanged glances and went outside to talk.

— Hunter. You look ridiculously clumsy in that coat.— Maeve frowned, looking down at her trench coat.— But you're a total brainiac.

Maeve laughed and shook her head, knowing she wouldn't take credit for it.

Spencer had a sly smile as he looked at the girl with pride.

— Spence. — she called lowering the tone of her voice, pointing to the door for both of them to leave. — Come with me.

— Morgan will stop calling you a brainiac eventually, I've been through that believe me.

— Spence.

— Although he still calls me like that. . .

— Spencer.

The boy stopped rambling and raised his eyebrows when he realized he was still talking. Maeve scratched the back of her neck, trying to find the right words.

— Is something wrong? — Inquires almost worried. — You okay?

— What do you remember about that night? —The boy doesn't seem to understand the question.— Last time I slept in your apartment. — Specifies her.

— Uhm. —It was a question that he did not expect, which is why he tried to remember that night. — Morgan took us to the apartment, you gave me an aspirin I think.

— That's it?

— Wasn't that what happened?

— Do you remember telling me you weren't drunk?

— Absolutely.

— Do you usually drink often?

— Maeve, Why do you ask those kinds of questions?

The girl sighed, took the paper she had previously printed out of her pocket and passed it to Spencer, who, somewhat confused, unfolded the sheet.

— This is Dr. Miller's investigation.— She goes ahead to explain as Spencer reads.— There is a fifty percent chance that a father will inherit schizophrenia from his son, — Spencer looks up from the paper at that word.— fifty percent of these are unlikely to show symptoms.

Spencer shifts in place uncomfortably.

— However, that genetics under any non-topical treatment and alcohol mixture, would work like a drug. The person could not remember anything...

Up to this point, Spencer's life like everyone else in the BAU, had its secrets, just months before Maeve's arrival is when the team meets his mother personally, Now Maeve seemed to have revealed things even to him.

— It's just some dumb research that hasn't been proven.— She clears her throat.— But I clung to it as soon as I read it, It made me more believable than... to think that you kissed me that day and just decided that we wouldn't talk about it, It's a clumsy theory I know.

— Wait, did I kiss you?
