•Chapter eight•

~Bugs~

__________________________

Sam laid on the hood of the impala, reading a newspaper. August laid against Sam's chest in the harness.

Dean came down the stairs from the roadhouse with a big smile on his face. He showed sam the cash in his hands.

"You know, we could get day jobs once in a while." Sam told him.

"Huntings our day job and the pay in crap." Dean stated.

"Yeah, but hustling pool, credit card scams? It's not the most honest thing in the world, Dean." Sam said.

"Well, let's see, honest, fun and easy. It's not contest." Dean said. "Besides, we're good at it. It's what we were raised to do."

"Yeah, well, how we were raised was jacked." Sam told him.

"Yeah, says you. She asleep?" Dean asked, gesturing to his baby.

"No, but here, she'd been whining." Sam said, taking the baby out of the harness and passing her to her father.

"We got a new gig or what?" Dean asked, taking his daughter and letting her lay her head on his shoulder.

August grasped onto his jacket tightly.

"Maybe." Sam said, getting off the hood and coming around to his brother. "Oasis plains, Oklahoma. Not far from here. Gas company employee, Dustin Burwash supposedly died from Creutzfeldta-Jakob."

"Huh?" Dean questioned, very confused.

"Human mad cow disease." Sam stated.

"Mad cow? Wasn't that on Oprah?" Dean questioned, patting Augusts back.

"You watch Oprah?" Sam questioned him.

Dean stared at him for a moment.

"So this guy eats a bad burger. Why is it our kind of thing?" Dean asked, changing the subject.

"Mad cow disease causes massive brain degeneration. It takes months, even years for the damage to appear but this guy Dustin, sounds like his brain disintegrated in about an hour, maybe less."

"Okay, that's weird." Dean stated.

"Yeah." Sam nodded. "Now it could be a disease or it could be something much nastier."

"Alright, Oklahoma." Dean said, starting towards the back door, he looked at August who was looking at him with big blue eyes. "Man, work, work, work. No time to spend my money." He told her.

August grinned at him as he opened the back door, and smiled at her, kissing her nose.

~~~
August cried as Dean drove down the road.
"August, calm down." Dean said.
He then sighed and started pulling over to the side of the road.
"What are you doing?" Sam questioned his brother.
"I'm putting her to sleep." Dean stated.
He parked the impala and got out of the car.
He went to the back, and opened the door, getting August out of the car. He brought her to his chest as he closed the door.
"Calm down, sweetheart. Daddy's got you. It's okay." Dean gently rubbed her back as he bounced her in his arms.
"Daddy's here, you're okay." Dean told her.
August started to calm down a little bit, Dean started to hum 'Hey Jude' to her.
August grasped onto deans amulet, holding it tightly in her little fist.
Sam watched his brother through the window, smiling softly at them.
After about five minutes, August was sound asleep on Deans shoulder. He gently opened the back door, and laid August in her car seat, buckling her up.
He quietly closed her door, then got into the drivers seat, closing his door quietly.
Dean started up the impala, wincing at how loud the engine was. He glanced back at August, seeing she was still asleep. He let out a breath, and pulled back onto the road.
"Nice." Sam made a face.
"Well, after about a month or two of having a baby, you learn that you gotta do what you gotta do." Dean gave a small shrug.
Sam hummed and smiled a little.
~~~

Dean carried August in his arms as they started towards a man.

"Travis Weaver?" Sam asked as they approached him.

"Yeah, that's right." The man nodded.

"Are you the Travis who worked with Uncle Dusty?" Dean asked as he bounced his baby in his arms.

"Dustin never mentioned nieces or nephews." Travis stated.

"Really?" Dean questioned. "Well, he sure mentioned you. He said you were the greatest."

"Oh, he did? Huh." Travis smiled, looking down at the pavement for a moment before looking up again.

"Listen, we wanted to ask you, uh what exactly happened out there?" Dean asked him.

"I'm not sure." Travis shook his head. "He fell in the sinkhole. I went to the truck to get some rope and, uh, by the time I got back..."

"What'd you see?" Dean asked.

"Nothing. Just Dustin."

"No wounds or anything?" Sam asked him.

"Well, he was bleeding from his eyes and his ears, his nose, that's it." Travis said.

"So do you think it could be this whole mad cow thing?" Dean asked.

Travis shrugged.

"I don't know. That's what the doctors are saying." He said.

"But if it was, he would have acted strange beforehand like dementia, loss of motor control. You ever notice anything like that?" Sam asked.

"Nah. No way." Travis shook his head. "Yeah, but then again, if it wasn't some disease what the hell was it?" He asked.

"That's a good question." Dean stated.

"You know, could you tell us where this happened?" Sam asked the man.

"Yeah." Travis nodded.

~~~
August had her purple butterfly binky in her mouth as Dean drove down the road.
She had just recently woken up as they had arrived to the town early that morning.
The impala rolled to stop by a house, across the street was caution tape surrounding a sinkhole, the caution tape was wrapped around a tree, then held up by two poles that had been shoved into the ground.
Dean left August in the car as they were just going across the road, and he could see the impala as clear as day. Plus, if he needed, it wouldn't take him no time to get over to the baby.
"Huh. What do you think?" Dean asked his brother as they approached the sinkhole.
"I don't know, but if that guy Travis was right it happened pretty damn fast." Sam stated as they ducked under the caution tape.
"So what? Some sort of creature chewed on his brain?" Dean questioned, glancing back at the impala.
"No, there'd be an entry wound." Sam stated. "Sounds like this thing worked from the inside."
They crouched down beside the hole, Dean shined a flashlight down in it, looking around it.
He hummed.
"Looks like there's only room for one." He stated as he turned off his flashlight and stood up, ducking out from under the caution tape. "You wanna flip a coin?"
"Dean, we have no idea what's down there." Sam said.
Dean walked over and grabbed a rope off the ground.
"Alright, I'll go if you're scared. You scared?" He walked back towards his little brother.
"Flip the damn coin." Sam told him.
Dean chuckled and dug a quarter out of his jacket pocket.
"Alright, call it in the air, chicken."
Dean flipped it up into the air, and Sam caught it.
"I'm going." He told him.
"I said I'd go." Dean stated.
"I'm going." Sam said again as he tied the rope around his waist.
"Ah, alright." Dean nodded, once again, glancing at the impala.
"Don't drop me." Sam told dean who didn't reply with words, but a smirk.
~~~

"So you found some beetles in a hole in the ground." Dean spoke up as he sped down the road. "That's shocking, Sam." He said sarcastically.

"There were no tunnels, no tracks, no evidence of any other kind of creature down there." Sam told him. "You know, some beetles do eat meat. Now it's usually dead meat, but—"

"How many did you find down there?" Dean asked him, cutting him off.

"Ten." Sam stated.

Dean made a face, looking up into the rearview mirror to see his daughter who was pulling at her little shoes that were on her little feet.

"It would take a whole lot more than that to eat out some dudes brain." Dean stated to his brother.

"Well, maybe there were more." Sam said.

"I don't know. It sounds like a stretch to me." Dean told him.

"Well, we need more information on the area, the neighborhood. Whether something like this has ever happened before." Sam stated.

He then noticed dean squinting while looking at something.

"What?" He questioned him.

"I know a good place to start." Dean told him. "Kind of hungry for a little barbecue. How about you?" He asked his brother as they passed a BBQ sign on the sidewalk.

Sam looked over at him and gave him a look.

"What, we can't talk to the locals?" Dean asked.

"And the free foods got nothing to do with it?" Sam questioned.

"Of course not. I'm a professional, tell him Auggie." Dean glanced back at the baby.

Sam turned in his seat to look at August who was smiling.

"August, tell your daddy to stop thinking with his stomach." Sam told her making her laugh and clap her hands.

Both brothers smiled and chuckled at her.

Dean pulled the impala into a parking space between some cars. He put the car in park, and cut the engine. He and Sam got out of the car, and Dean opened the back door to get August.

He saw she had managed to get one of her shoes off.

"How in the world did you manage that?" He questioned her with a smile as he grabbed the shoe out of the floor.

It was smaller than his palm.

August squealed, clapping her hands making Dean laugh.

"Is that funny?" He asked her with a smile.

Dean tried putting the shoe back on her foot, but she kept moving it away from Dean.

"Stop it. Let me out it back on." He scolded her but she just laughed.

Dean sighed. He unbuckled August and got her out of the car seat. He closed the door, the baby's shoe still in his hand.

He walked around to Sam who was looking around.

"Here, I'll hold her still, put that on her foot, will you?" Dean handed the shoe to his brother who chuckled.

Dean held August in a sitting position, holding her foot still so Sam could slip the shoe on, and he did just that.

"See, that's wasn't so hard, now was it?" Dean questioned the baby as he tickled her belly making her laugh.

Sam smiled as Dean kissed the baby's cheek. They then walked around to the sidewalk and started walking down it.

"Growing up in a place like this would freak me out." Dean spoke up as he gently bounced august in his arms.

"Why?" Sam asked.

"The manicured lawns, how-was-your-day-honey?" Dean spoke in a questioning tone. "I'd blow my brains out."

"There's nothing wrong with normal." Sam told him.

"I'd take our family over normal any day." Dean said.

August held onto Deans jacket with both hands, using that death grip she used when Dean would put her to sleep, then try to slip away from her.

They walked up to a house, and knocked on the door. It soon opened, revealing a man.

"Welcome." He smiled at them.

"Is this the barbecue?" Dean asked him.

"Yeah, not the best weather, but..." The man trailed off, looking up towards the cloudy and gray sky. "I'm, uh, I'm Larry Pike, the developer here, and you are?" He held his hand out to them.

"Dean. This is Sam, and this is August." Dean introduced them as he shook the man's hand.

"Sam, Dean, August, good to meet you." Larry smiled at them as he shook Sam's hand, then gave a small wave to August. "So you two are interested in Oasis plains?"

"Yes, sir." Dean nodded.

"Let me just say we accept homeowners of any race, religion, color, or...sexual orientation." Larry told them.

The brothers stared at him for a moment.

"We're brothers." Dean gestured to himself and his brother. "My kid." He gestured to August.

Larry's lips parted slightly and he nodded.

"Our father is getting on in years and we're just looking for a place for him." Sam told him.

"Great, great. Well, seniors are welcome too." Larry said. "Come on in." He stepped aside, letting them into the house.

Larry led them through the house, and out into the backyard.

"You said you were the developer?" Sam asked.

"Eighteen months ago, I was walking this valley with my survey team. There was nothing here but scrub brush and squirrels." Larry stated. "And you know what, we built such a nice place to live that I actually bought into it myself. This is our house." He told them. "We're the first family in Oasis plains. This is wife, Joanie." He wrapped his arm around a blonde woman.

"Hi there." She smiled at them.

"Hi." Dean nodded to her.

"Sam, Dean, and August." Larry told his wife as she shook the mens hands.

"Hi, nice to meet you." She smiled just before her eyes shifted to the baby. "Hi there, cutie." She smiled at August.

August grinned and Dean chuckled.

"Tell them how much you love the place, honey." Larry told Joanie. "And lie if you have to because I need to sell some houses."

"Right." Joanie nodded.

Sam smiled at the couple.

"Boys, if you'll excuse me." Larry brushed past them.

"Don't let his salesman routine scare you." Joanie told them. "This really is a great place to live."

Out of nowhere, a woman came up from behind Joanie.

"Hi, I'm Lynda Bloome, head of sales." She told them.

"And Lynda was second to move in. She's a very noisy neighbor though." Joanie brushed past them.

"She's kidding, of course." Lynda chuckled. "I take it you two are interested in becoming homeowners."

"Well..." Dean trailed off, looking down at August.

"Yeah, yeah, well..." Sam started.

"Well, let me just say that we accept homeowners of any race, religion, color or...sexual orientation." Lynda told them.

Dean smiled, somewhat sarcastically.

"Right." He chuckled. "Uh, me and Auggie are gonna got talk to Larry. Okay, Honey?" Dean told his brother as he turned and walked away, smacking Sam's butt as he went.

Sam glared at his brother.

August laughed and clapped her hands.

"I know! It's so funny!" Dean chuckled and smiled at her.

~~~
"You got three choices. Carpet, hardwood, and tile." Larry told Dean as they walked down the stairs, August still in Deans arms.
"Whoa. Someone likes bugs." Dean spoke up as he saw a jar of insects sitting on the table.
"My son." Larry put his hands on his hips. "He's into insects."
Dean nodded his head.
"He's very inquisitive." Larry stated.
Dean hummed, gently bouncing the baby in his arms.
Larry led Dean outside into the backyard again, where they saw Sam and a boy talking.
"Matthew." Larry spoke as they came over to them. "I am so sorry about my son and his pet." He apologized to Sam.
"It's no bother." Sam shook his head.
"Excuse us." Larry led his son past the Winchesters.
August babbled against Deans chest as he came over to his brother.
"Remind you of somebody?" Sam questioned Dean.
Dean looked over towards Larry and Matthew, Larry was yelling at his son. Dean looked back to Sam.
"Dad?" Sam questioned.
"Dad never treated us like that." Dean stated.
"Well, Dad never treated you like that." Sam scoffed. "You were perfect. He was all over my case."
Dean raised his brows, shaking his head.
"You don't remember?" Sam asked.
"Well, maybe he had to raise his voice, but sometimes you were out of line." Dean stated.
"Right. Right, like when I said I'd rather play soccer than learn bow hunting." Sam said.
"Bow huntings an important skill." Dean told him.
Sam shook his head, not wanting to argue anymore.
"Whatever. How was your tour?" He asked.
"Oh, it was excellent. I'm ready to buy." Dean told him and smiled.
Sam smiled, glancing at August who was grinning.
"So you might be into something. Looks like Dustin Burwash wasn't the first strange death around here." Dean stated.
"What happened?" Sam asked.
"About a year ago before they before they broke ground one of Larry's surveyors dropped dead while on the job. Get this. Severe allergic reaction to bee stings." He told him.
"More bugs." The two said in unison.
August clapped her hands and reached for her uncle.
"You want Uncle Sammy?" Dean asked with a chuckled as he passed her to Sam.
"Hey, kiddo." Sam chuckled and kissed her head.
August grinned at him, reaching up towards his face.
Sam smiled happily at her.
~~~

"You know, I've heard of killer bees, but killer beetles?" Dean questioned. "What is it that could make different bugs attack?" He asked.

Sam glanced over at him, then back to the road as he was the one driving.

"Well, haunting sometimes include bug manifestation." He said.

"Yeah, but I didn't see any evidence of ghost activity." Dean stated, glancing back to August who was playing with her feet.

"Yeah, me neither." Sam sighed.

Dean looked forwards again.

"Maybe they're being controlled somehow you know, by something or someone." He stated.

"You mean like Willard?" Sam questioned him.

"Yeah, bugs instead of rats." Dean shrugged.

"There are cases of psychic connections between people and animals. Elementals, telepaths." Sam said.

"Yeah, the whole Timmy-lassie thing." Dean said. "Larry's kid. Got bugs for pets." He stated.

"Matt?" Sam questioned.

"Yeah."

"He did try to scare the realtor with a tarantula." Sam stated.

"Think he's our Willard?" Dean asked.

"I don't know." Sam shrugged. "Anything's possible, I guess."

Dean looked out his window.

"Ooh, hey, pull over here." Dean told his brother, pointing to an empty house.

Sam pulled into the driveway.

"What are we doing here?" He questioned his big brother.

Dean got out of the impala and rushed over to the garage, opening the door and holding it open for Sam.

"It's too late to talk to anybody else." He stated.

"We're gonna squat in an empty house?" Sam questioned.

"I wanna try the steam shower. Come on." Dean smiled.

When Sam didn't move, Dean got irritated.

"Come on!" He raised his voice.

Sam sighed and pulled the impala into the garage, punching Dean in his stomach through his rolled down window as he did so.

Dean closed the garage back.

~~~
Dean walked out of the kitchen from just feeding August, towards the room he called dibs on, where Augusts crib was set up.
It was way past her bedtime, and Dean knew that if Delilah were there, she'd be scolding him for it.
Dean grabbed Augusts bag off the floor and walked over to the bed, sitting August down on it and setting the bag beside her.
Dean muttered to himself as he searched through the bag just before pulling out some pajamas for the baby.
"Scooby doo tonight?" Dean asked the baby, holding up tiny Scooby doo pajamas.
August grinned at him, reaching up towards him.
"Scooby doo it is." Dean chuckled.
He gently slipped the little shirt on over her head, he slipped her arms through the sleeves and she started getting fussy about it.
"Hey, calm down." Dean told her, pulling the shirt all the way down.
August started whining.
Dean sighed, looking to the pajama pants.
"You know what? You can sleep in your diaper tonight, it's pretty hot in here anyway." He stuffed the pants into the baby's bag, then picked her up off the bed, leaving the pajama shirt on her.
August yawned and Dean saw it.
"Yeah, you're getting so sleepy." He gently spoke to her as she laid her head on his shoulder. "So sleepy." Dean said just before yawning himself.
Dean gently bounced August in his arms, patting her back. She was dozing off, trying to fight against it but she was failing miserably.
"You're gonna lay down now, okay?" Dean told her as he slowly made his way to her foldable crib.
Dean started to slowly lower her down into the crib, but August started whining.
"Hey, you're okay, daddy's still here." Dean told her, laying her down.
He laid his hand on her chest, her tiny hands grasped onto his fingers as she started to calm down a little.
"Good girl." Dean used his other hand to gently stroke her cheek.
Augusts eyes started closing and before she even knew it, she was sound asleep.
Dean softly smiled and slid his hand out of her grasp. He gently pulled her hearing aids out of her ears, and set them on the nightstand.
"Goodnight, August Jude." He turned back to the baby. "Two kisses. One from daddy." He leaned down into the crib and kissed her forehead. "And one from mommy." He kissed her forehead once more before backing away. "Mommy and daddy love you so very much."
Dean gently ruffled the brown hair on Augusts head before pulling away, and leaving her to sleep.
~~~

Sam carried August in her arms as he walked down the hallway towards the shower where Dean was, and had been for the past 45 minutes.

Sam beat on the door.

"You ever coming out of there?" He called to his brother.

"What?" Dean called out from inside the bathroom.

"Dean, a police call came in on the scanner." Sam stated.

"Hold on." Dean said.

"Someone was found dead three blocks from here." Sam said, gently bouncing the baby in his arms. "Come on."

The door unlocked and opened slightly, revealing dean who had a towel on his head.

August grinned at him.

"This shower is awesome." Dean told his brother with a smile.

"Come on." Sam said, turning and walking away from the bathroom, he heard the bathroom door close again. "Alright, let's get you dressed, kiddo." He sighed to August who smiled at him, reaching up for his face.

Sam went into the room Dean and August slept in, and he grabbed the diaper bag, and Augusts bag off the floor.

Sam set August on the bed, and gently pulled her shirt off over her head. August laughed making Sam smile.

"What's so funny?" He asked her with a small chuckle.

August laughed again making Sam laugh.

"Okay." He chuckled and got out an outfit for the baby.

"Alright." Sam muttered to himself as he put the shirt on the girl, helping her arms through the short sleeves.

He then put the pants on her, and to say the least, was amazed at how small they were.

Who knew jeans could be so tiny?

Sam smiled as August laughed again.

"What are you laughing at, Auggie?" He chuckled.

August stretched her arms up towards Sam, and he picked her up off the bed. He grabbed her tiny shoes, but didn't put them on her.

He knew Dean sometimes didn't make August wear shoes and just left her sock feet as they were. She seemed to enjoy not wearing shoes anyway.

Sam picked up both of Augusts bags, and walked out of the bedroom with the baby.

~~~
August cooed quietly as Dean got her out of her car seat. She had her pink pacifier in her mouth, Dean had given it to her because she'd started crying soon after they'd left the house.
Dean fixed August in one arm, had his umbrella in the other, and closed the car door with his foot. He opened the umbrella and held it in his hand, August looked up at it and made a noise, Dean looked over at her.
"Yeah, it's an umbrella." He told her with a slightly smile as he met Sam around the front of the impala.
Augusts grinned at Dean, her baby teeth peering from behind her pacifier.
The Winchesters walked up to Larry as he hung up his phone.
"Hello, you're, uh, back early." Larry stated to them.
"Yeah, we, uh, just drove in. Wanted to take another look at the neighborhood." Dean told him.
"What's going on?" Sam asked.
"You guys met, uh, Lynda Bloome at the barbecue?" Larry questioned.
"The realtor." Sam said.
"Well, she, uh, passed away last night." Larry said.
Sam raised his brows at him.
"What happened?" Dean asked as he slightly shook his head.
"I'm still trying to find out." Larry lightly shrugged a shoulder. "Identified the body for the police. Look, I'm, I'm sorry. This isn't a good time." Larry told them.
"Its okay." Sam nodded.
"Excuse me." Larry walked away from them.
August started whining a little making both brothers glance at her.
"You know what we have to do, right?" Dean said as he put his hand in Augusts grasp, she immediately started calming down.
"Yeah, get in that house." Sam stated.
"See if we got a bug problem." Dean said.
August looked up at him.
~~~

After the brothers managed to get into the house by climbing up the side of it, which wasn't very easy with a baby by the way, they saw blood stains on the carpet.

Sam closed the window as Dean looked over the room.

"This looks like the place." He stated, walking into the bathroom, stepping over shattered glass.

He held August out to Sam, who gladly took the baby. Dean turned back and crouched down to the floor.

He picked a towel up off the floor and a bunch of dead spiders fell out of it onto the floor. Dean immediately dropped the towel.

"Spiders." He stated. "From spider boy?" He asked Sam.

"Matt." Sam told him. "Maybe." He bounced August in his arms.

Dean sighed.

~~~
The impala rolled to a stop across the road from a bus stop where Matt was getting off of his school bus.
"Isn't his house that way?" Dean asked as  Matt started walking down the street.
"Yup." Sam nodded.
"So where's he going?" Dean questioned.
Sam got out of the car, and Dean followed, getting August out of the car. She was dozing off with her pacifier still in her mouth.
The Winchesters walked into the woods where they had seen Matt go. They found him standing by a tree, holding a preying mantis on his hand.
"Hey, Matt." Sam spoke up, making the boy look at them. "Remember me?"
"What are you doing out here?" Matt asked.
"Well, we wanna talk to you." Dean told him, then smirked.
"You're not here to buy a house, are you?" Matt questioned them.
Dean made a face that told Matt he was right.
"W-wait, you're not serial killers?" He asked.
"No, no." Sam scoffed. "No, I think you're safe." He told him.
Dean grinned, gently rubbing Augusts back.
Matt calmed down a little.
"So, Matt, you sure know a lot about insects." Dean stated.
"So?" Matt questioned.
"Did you hear what happened to Lynda, the realtor?" He asked.
"I hear she died this morning." Matt nodded his head.
"Mm, that's right." Dean nodded. "Spider bites." He whispered.
Sam gave his brother a look.
"Matt, you tried to scare her with a spider." He stated to the teen.
"Wait, you think I had something to do with that?" Matt questioned them.
"You tell us." Dean said.
"That tarantula was a joke. Anyway, that wouldn't explain the bee attack or the gas company guy." Matt stated.
"You know about those?" Sam asked.
"There is something going on here. I don't know what but somethings happening with the insects. Let me show you something."
Matt grabbed his book bag and swung it over his shoulder, just before brushing past the Winchesters, who followed after him.
August was sound asleep on Deans shoulder and he didn't want her to wake up. He knew she would be cranky if she did.
"So if you knew about all this bug stuff why not tell your dad?" Sam asked as they walked through the woods. "Maybe he could clear everybody out."
"Believe me, I've tried, but, uh, Larry doesn't listen to me." Matt stated.
"Why not?" Sam asked.
"Mostly? He's too disappointed in his freak son." He said.
Sam let out a scoff.
"I hear ya." He said.
"You do?" Dean questioned him.
Sam glanced back at him.
"Matt, how old are you?" Sam asked.
"Sixteen." The boy said.
"Well, don't sweat it, 'cause in two years something greats gonna happen."
"What?"
"College. You'll be able to get out of that house and away from your dad." Sam told him.
"What kind of advice is that?" Dean questioned. "Kid should stick with his family."
Sam stopped walking and turned to face his brother. Dean stared at him as he pat Augusts back.
"How much further, Matt?" Sam turned back to the teenager.
"We're close." Matt said.
Sam and Dean looked at each other, tension in the air. Sam then turned and followed after Matt, but Dean stayed back for a second before following them with August in his arms.
They walked for a few more seconds before stopping at a big opening. They could hear bugs buzzing from every direction.
"I've been keeping track of insect populations. It's, um, part of an AP science class." Matt told them.
Dean raised his brows slightly, glancing from Matt to Sam.
"You two are like peas in a pod." He stated.
"What's been happening?" Sam asked Matt.
"Well, a lot." Matt said. "I mean, from bees to earthworms, uh, beetles. You name it. It's like they're congregating here."
"Why?" Dean asked.
"I don't know." Matt shrugged.
"What's that?" Sam spoke up, pointing at a plot of grass.
Matt didn't say anything. Dean raised his brows and brushed past them, going towards the plot of grass. Matt and Sam followed after him.
They walked down to a muddy area covered in worms. Dean pressed his shoe against it and it made a squishing noise.
He scrunched his nose up in disgust and glanced back at his brother. Dean gently passed August to Sam, then crouched down to the muddy pile of worms.
Dean picked up a stick and shoved it down into the big hole in the mud, and it made a clanking sound, meaning something was down there.
"There's something go down there." Dean stated.
Sam gently bounced August in his arms.
Dean hesitantly pulled his sleeve up, then stuck his hand down into the hole. After a short moment, he pulled something out of it.
It was a skull.
Dean looked back at Sam.
~~~

August yawned as she laid in her car seat while Sam drove down the road.

Sam pulled the impala to the side of the road, cut the engine, and got out. Dean also got out of the car, and got August out as well, while Sam got the box out of the back seat that contained the bones they found.

Sam put his jacket over the box to hide it from anyone else.

Dean gently bounced the baby in his arms, talking to her in his baby voice. August grinned at him, reaching towards his face and placing her little hands on Deans cheeks.

Dean smiled and kissed her palm, August laughed making Dean chuckle.

"I love you, August Jude." He kissed her cheek.

Sam closed the car door and came over to Dean and August.

"So a bunch of skeletons in an unmarked grave." He said as they started walking.

"Yeah, maybe this is a haunting." Dean stated. "Pissed off spirits, some unfinished business."

"Yeah, maybe. Question is, why bugs?" Sam said. "And why now?"

"Uh, that's two questions." Dean stated. "Hey, so with that kid back there how could you tell him to ditch his family like that?"

"Just, uh, I know what the kids going through." Sam said.

"How about telling him to respect his old man? How's that for advice?" Dean said.

"Dean, come on." Sam stopped walking and turned to face his brother. "This isn't about his old man. You think I didn't respect dad. That's what this is about."

"Just forget it, alright? Sorry I brought it up." Dean went to walk away, but Sam kept talking.

"I respected him. But no matter what I did, it was never good enough."

"So what are you saying, that dad was disappointed in you?" Dean questioned.

"Was?" Sam questioned. "Is." He scoffed. "Always has been."

"Why would you think that?" Dean asked.

"Because I didn't wanna bow hunt or hustle pool because I wanted to go to school and live my life which, to our whacked-out family, made me the freak." Sam told him.

"You were kind of like the blonde chick in The Munsters." Dean said, patting Augusts back.

"Dean, you know what most Dads are when their kids score a full ride?" Sam asked him. "Proud." He stated. "Most dads don't toss their kids out of the house."

"I remember that fight. In fact, I seem to recall a few choice phrases coming out of your mouth." Dean told him.

August started whining, feeling the tension between the brothers.

Sam scoffed and shook his head.

"You know, truth is, when we finally do find dad I don't know if he's even gonna wanna see me." He stated.

"Sam, Dad was never disappointed in you. Never." Dean told him. "He was scared."

"What are you talking about?" Sam questioned him.

"He was afraid of what could happen to you if he wasn't around. But even when you two weren't talking he used to swing by Stanford whenever he could." Dean told his brother. "Keep an eye on you. Make sure you were safe."

"What?" Sam asked.

"Yeah." Dean nodded, a slight smirk appearing on his face.

"Why didn't he tell me any of that?" Sam questioned.

"Well, it's a two-way street, Dude. You could have picked up the phone." Dean said.

Sam stared at him for a moment.

"Come on, we're gonna be late for our appointment." Dean said, looking to August who had a tight grip on his amulet like usual.

Dean started walking to the building with August in his arms, Sam watched them go as Dean talked to his baby in his baby voice.

He then followed after them.
